Regarding multiplayer, the original Xbox didn't have that gun, it was a feature of Gearbox's extra content for the PC port, like the finished flamethrower as well

The scarab buckling in reach crashes the game if an overlay is active. The scarab systems were being worked on from 2005-2007 and were used up until at least 2009. Yet, in reach a major crash-bug exists that even the original bungie developers could not fix.
ive been stubbornly clinging for years to the message that the CE fuel rod is yellow and only has purple iridescence, so im very happy one of the biggest archival channels finally covered it!
@@stupidjaosn I don't know if it's still possible to play but look up halo custom Edition it released on PC with the with the PC release of Halo Combat Evolved and it's literally just halo multiplayer that can be modded. To my knowledge it's pretty under the radar and only old guys are really actively aware about it and use it. I used to use it but I'm just not a huge fan of multiplayer and now that mods are added to mcc there's barely a point for even having it to begin with.

@@bosyogurtlight what did any of what i say have to do with 343i dude. also, IT IS their fault because if bungie had included the fuel rod in mp it would've looked the same as the gearbox port since it was their own design (ie it isn't gearbox's fault). gearbox didn't do tag edits to bungie's tags. also, the keye's model was not a cut model but an early model and i personally can't explain that one but it's irrelevant to the fuel rod discussion anyways
Wow i always wondered why the grunts seemingly had to charge the weapon before the shot being that it works differentky in the multiplayer, this resolved many of my questions.
Maybe low center of gravity would be useful and being lower to the ground means they could arc the projectile more. Kinda like a mortar. For creative purposes, it inverts the threat, since we spent half the game stomping grunts.
I’m glad the future fuel rod guns don’t over heat and fire actual projectiles. Makes it stand out at least a bit more than it would’ve if it was a battery-powered over heater like almost every other covenant weapon. Plus you could walk over another one and take its ammo so that’s always a win
I more miss it's mortar functionality. It felt really unique from the straight firing rocket launcher. The future iterations of it not only shooting straight (with very slight drop) while also bouncing made me never want to pick it up.

Interesting that Bungie had their ideas for the fuel rod cannon the whole time. The Gearbox version is just an odd one out rather than the 2 version being a radical redesign. Also I never noticed the campaign one had a different model, it's huge. Cool stuff!
Another interesting bit of trivia for the Halo 2 fuel rod cannon; it’s a recycled design of the Flak Cannon, a weapon that was going to appear in Halo 1, but was cut. You can see this in some old Macworld 99 footage, and it’s available in the Digsite tag release!
I remember putting the grunts' fuel rod's properties into the model of the MP fuel rod and playing with it years ago. You could spam fire the fuel rod if you charged it up and quickly let go and re-pressed the trigger.
It's quite an interesting weapon especially given it's only encountered in the later half of the campaign (Two Betrayals onwards). I'm glad to see that now thanks to modding in steam workshop, you can now find modded campaigns of the game that allow you to use the gun, rather than just on multiplayer alone which was originally only possible in Halo CE for PC. The Fuel Rod is a really fun gun to use.
@mikemasaki8193 Nope, that Grunt has never spawned with a fuel rod on the first mission ever. Doesn't matter the difficulty nor which version of the game (CE, Anniversary, Halo PC or MCC). There has never been a Grunt that spawns with a fuel rod on the first mission.
@mikemasaki8193 Can tell you this as someone who has played CE multiple times on Legendary difficulty and on all versions of the game that there is no Grunt that spawns with a Fuel Rod in the cafeteria on Pillar of Autumn. They do on The Maw as they are there with Special Ops Elites (both covies clad in black armour). The first official time you encounter one of them is on Two Betrayals when you are heading for the 2nd pulse generator and they spawn on that land bridge coming through the doors on the far end (the side you don't go through). Any CE veteran will tell you the exact same thing.
This is why its always bugged me when ive seen people say they want the original purple fuel rod or argue that it wasnt gold until 2, because it was always gold from day 1 of CE. It was only purple in the Gearbox versions multiplayer as it was likely just one of the many things they messed up/misinterpreted from the original Xbox version, ive always seen the campaign fuel rod as gold just with an almost oil-slick like pinky-purple reflection on it, so the full purple one in the gearbox port always looked strange to me.
@@gavinrolls1054 im not sure about that, cause even going back to the macworld days the fuel rod and even certain other cut covenant weapons were the same gold, as far as ive seen the only version where its purple is the gearbox multiplayer one, which is more than likely a custom model they made by heavily editing the campaign one, which also explains the different size so it fit the spartan models better, since the campaign one might not have had a proper first person model or animations as it wasnt intended to be used by the player. Someone at gearbox likely just saw the purple reflection maps and wrongly assumed the whole thing was supposed to be purple while making it, or just for whatever reason decided to intentionally change it to purple cause they didnt think the gold matched the other covenant weapons or something.

Oh the memories of Blood Gulch on pc using the fuel rod gun as a "mobile artillery", never had a single kill with that strat though got me pretty mad for sure, now there isn't a single Blood Gulch map that have the original weapons, it's either shotties and snipers or just rocket launchers. Sadly Custom Editon isn't populated as much anymore. Wish I have friends or some randos who play Custom Edition to get that nostalgic itch off, I did make a Discord server for the game sadly IDK where to advertise the link.
Halo CE had the best fuel rod gun. The brief charge up, the lauch noise, and the impact noise, coupled with the mild ground shake when the projectile landed, made this a feard weapon. All of the Halo sequels turned this into a beam weapon that sounded like a rubber duck squeak when it fired. They completely took all the drama and fear away from this weapon

I grew up with Halo CE on the PC and always assumed the campaign fuel rod was the same as the purple one in multiplayer (with the key difference being that it explodes after being dropped and thus can't be used by the Chief). Never realized it was actually remarkably similar both in color and shape to the gold version in 2 onward.

Now i am imagining that the multiplayer fuel rod cannon were early models of the weapon however it was difficult to manufacture and produce so they had to slightly redesign it for larger hands, while keeping it light enough for grunts to use and reload which is what made it a very devastating weapon was the reloading tray, since you could have one person loading it as you fired, keeping fire constant. Look at them closleep and the last thing I'm surprised that they put a light mechanic or just a texture so that they. The gun basically would look different and bow, dark and light.Wlet's still as video short was good
It is a magazine, it feeds ammunition into the firearm via gravity. Clips are used to load magazines. Magazines do not have to be enclosed and complicated, they can be quite open and simple.
Halo 2 had an interesting Fuel Rod gun, with a very slight homing ability When I would use it in campaign, I would fire it at Phantoms and when they would speed away, the fuel rod shot would track it for a while before it would lose track of its homing ability and then slowly dip off.
Fuel rod grunts from CE are one of the coolest designs of any Halo enemy even though theyre simple, and basically just a darker normal grunt. I've always thought they were neat.
I love the projectile ballistics of the CE fuel rod cannon and kinda wish it had transferred into Halo 2; though I suppose the Brute Shot more or less filled that niche.
Having the clip on top actually makes sense now if it's meant to be reloadable like in future titles. And I've never actually seen it with the gold texture in-game. I've seen an image of it, but assumed it was an earlier version.
In lore it was an outdated version that wasn't used in excess because it had a habit of self destruction, just like the Icebreaker sniper rifle from Destiny
I always knew it was gold. But that’s just because I made my entrance into the world of halo around the time Halo 3 was brand new. And yes, this weapon was gold in halo 3
And if you give a little bit longer of a break before each firing in the multiplayer version you can get more shots fired off before overheating. I love it, you can go fast for five shot and a little slower for more.
The fuel rod in CE was always peculiar. Almost an anomaly really. It’s not like the energy sword, which was unique to Elites all throughout. The fuel rod wasn’t playable normally. I think it was even exclusive to PC, if I’m not mistaken. So, I’d see clips of people using the CE fuel rod and be absolutely flabbergasted at what I was looking at. So glad for the coverage here!
I do absolutely prefer the fuel rod the way it operates in CE multiplayer over any other future iteration of the gun in other Halo games. Being battery powered like the plasma rifle, the sound, and arch of the shot is simply perfection!!! Should have stood that way in Halo 2 and 3. Reach we could have got a different version that would have been interesting. And of course the Banished should have a Red version that's more destructive.. would be epic

The campaign’s fuel rod gun also has a “dead man’s switch”, where when the operator dies, the fuel rod self destructs and explodes.

Gearbox port didn't mess it up. They just used the cut mp fuel rod that Bungie made so it was still Bungie's fault.

wasnt gearbox in this case. yeah they added the fuel rod back into mp since it was cut but the asset they used was created by Bungie and not Gearbox.

It is a magazine, it feeds ammunition into the firearm via gravity. Clips are used to load magazines. Magazines do not have to be enclosed and complicated, they can be quite open and simple.

I had no idea the Fuel Rod Gun has always been gold!
Never knew that! Still wish it and the Flamethrower were in the campaign, would add so much to the sandbox, those and the energy sword too of course.
Halo 2 had an interesting Fuel Rod gun, with a very slight homing ability
When I would use it in campaign, I would fire it at Phantoms and when they would speed away, the fuel rod shot would track it for a while before it would lose track of its homing ability and then slowly dip off.
I give them on Warthog and Scorpio also. And Rocket launcher too. Fuel rod and Rocket launcher on one side of vehicle's.
Honestly can only recall one instance of ever seeing the fuel rod in CE and that is Maw, the very last mission at the very beginning of the mission
I wished they used more of the bandhee colors in halo 2 and later games

Fuel rod grunts from CE are one of the coolest designs of any Halo enemy even though theyre simple, and basically just a darker normal grunt. I've always thought they were neat.
I used to call this the "tennis ball gun". Projectiles sounded like tennis balls, looked liked tennis balls, and bounced like tennis balls.

I love the projectile ballistics of the CE fuel rod cannon and kinda wish it had transferred into Halo 2; though I suppose the Brute Shot more or less filled that niche.

In lore it was an outdated version that wasn't used in excess because it had a habit of self destruction, just like the Icebreaker sniper rifle from Destiny
I always knew it was gold. But that’s just because I made my entrance into the world of halo around the time Halo 3 was brand new. And yes, this weapon was gold in halo 3
And if you give a little bit longer of a break before each firing in the multiplayer version you can get more shots fired off before overheating. I love it, you can go fast for five shot and a little slower for more.
The FRG wasn't in Halo CE. It's not even in the MCC version
The fuel rod in CE was always peculiar. Almost an anomaly really. It’s not like the energy sword, which was unique to Elites all throughout. The fuel rod wasn’t playable normally. I think it was even exclusive to PC, if I’m not mistaken. So, I’d see clips of people using the CE fuel rod and be absolutely flabbergasted at what I was looking at. So glad for the coverage here!

I do absolutely prefer the fuel rod the way it operates in CE multiplayer over any other future iteration of the gun in other Halo games. Being battery powered like the plasma rifle, the sound, and arch of the shot is simply perfection!!! Should have stood that way in Halo 2 and 3. Reach we could have got a different version that would have been interesting.
And of course the Banished should have a Red version that's more destructive.. would be epic
