Thanks for the show Phillip. You shouldn't worry about how to title your video's because when your fans see you've put out a video we are going to just watch it. The title is just something to put above you name.
I own a Carvin DC 135 that is amazing in the early 80’s that is one of my favorites. Because it has a Kahler tremolo, I had to take it in for intonation reset. The tech actually thanked me for the honor of working on a quality instrument. I went home beaming.
I run a Grandmiester 36, with the matching pedal, through a Mesa 2x12. It was a fantastic solution for downsizing my rig while still having all of the great tones you would want in an easily controllable rig. Would I like some more amps? Sure, I'm a gear head, but this rig does it for my needs.
I've been fairly impressed with the guitar center employees in my area lately. Boston and Danvers MA, and the Nashua NH locations are the ones that I frequent. For the most part, they've been very helpful, friendly and courteous.
got a pretty new ce 24 that's developed a static-related crackling sound as I slide my hand up and down the neck; it stops when I pop the push-pull and split the pickups. What gives?
I like the longer format here. I wish the Q&A would be at least 90mn long every week. Generally 60mn go very fast and there's not enough time for everyone to ask their questions.
I completely agree with the Guitar Center employee vanishing/appearing trick. I have found you almost need to be prepared with exactly what you want and you need to tell them right away when you walk into the store what you want. That is my trick to get service there.
I love Carvin and have a lot of their gear. I called them many times about their marketing problems. They made great stuff but were priced right in the middle of cheap {$200} and boutique {$2000} so they need special marketing and I wish they would have hired an advertising agency. I would have paid a little more to have them around.
Agreed. Their products are absolute quality. I own an eight channel mixer with huge speakers on tripods. A DC135 . And an X100 B half stack. Very disappointed when they scaled down.
I have had exactly the same experience in every GuitarCenter. I walk in, everyone has to bird dog me to see what I'm after. I spend some time looking around and find something that I have to have if I could play it and it doesn't have any major issues. NOT ONE SALESMEN TO BE FOUND. I've walked out with nothing but a bad attitude more times than not.
The most sensible few words about Gibson I've heard Phillip. Most of us want to see Gibson succeed but they need to listen to the quality control complaints and they need to reduce the variety of models they produce within a type of guitar. Far too many varieties of Les Pauls but there is no chance they will disappear, no need to panic there. As you say the brand will live on and people will still want them.
Another great show and the 2 some odd hours flew by! I can say the the energy exuded by all the Guit.Con attendees during that week and the subsequent videos was palpable through the screen. Like many, I would love to visit Germany and volunteer for future shows but that is just a dream. On the talk about Guitar Center. Where I used to live in Northern California, the local GC had the stereotypical employees and customer service problems that many of us have run across. The cause was a bad store manager who was let go and another promoted from within. The service turned around 180° and I could see & feel the change in the atmosphere. There were actual smiles on the faces of the staff. GC Corporate sends out enough grief, but adding a lousy manager to the mix can make life a living hell. I experienced that from an industry I formally worked in with dysfunctional management and is not pleasant. BTW - I have the same model MIJ Blue Jackson Dinky as you. Got her for a deal, too! Take care!
Seems the stars all aligned for this event. Glad for all the you-tubers who got to experience this event(like the summer of love revisited). It's been wonderful getting to know you guys, Thanks again.
On the subject of direct mounted pick ups , I think the popularity of it may be more than just aesthetics . I remember an old Guitar Player Magazine review of a Washburn guitar that had bolted on pickups. The reviewer noted that tests had shown that direct mounted pickups were 30 % more efficient than those on springs . But to hear any difference one would probably need to do an A/B test with 2 guitars of the same type and set up - one direct mounted and the other with springs and play one after the other. Otherwise by the time you have bolted the pickups on you will have forgotten what they sounded like before.
I really like how you list the topics by time. this makes a big difference because most people won't spend 2 hours + watching youtube but they WOULD want to see certain topics
Warwick switched to using ovangkol in the early 2000s when they could no longer get wenge wood due to war in Africa. Older Warwick basses used to have thinner necks but as ovangkol was not as strong, the 2000+ necks were thicker and a lot of people disliked the new fatter neck profile. I like it. They kept the fretboards as wenge during this time period and in 2013 switched back to wenge necks as they obviously managed to get hold of the wood again. Ovangkol on your Framus is good - these African hard woods are what give Warwick basses their bright clear quality and I really enjoy the sound it produces.
Also Phil any experience grinding out the nickle silver fret wire at an incredibly faster rate after changing to daddarios super steels in comparison with star less steel fret wire
When talking about direct-mount pickups, it’s important to remember that he was playing stadiums and standing in front of massive stacks. At those volume levels, microphonic effects from anything that isn’t nailed down are likely to be much more intrusive…
I have a Martin that had one side bent backwards so the wood grain does not match. Matin stuck the back & sides set in a box with a Japanese solid spruce top and a Shenandoah solid mahogany neck, and sold it to me as a kit, for peanuts. It is a Martin D28 top & neck with a D32 back. It is also still a Martin in every way, except a small cosmetic defect, and some mismatched trim. Gibson B Stock has kind of gone away. There used to be a distributor that exclusively sold Gibson seconds, with no serial numbers. P90 on a hollow body. USE A VOLUME PEDAL! I PLAY A 1961 ES 330, and use a volume pedal. I used to pack the guitar with foam rubber.
P90s in hollowbodies. Use a Volume Pedal ! !!! I used to pack the guitars with foam rubber, but now I use a volume pedal, and mute the strings with my palm a lot. No more foam rubber, and I am playing 50-200 Watts, tube driven into everything from Celestion, to JBL, to EV, to Jensen, Oxford, Eminence, Warehouse, Fane, Carboneau, Altec, pretty much you name it, we have it. As for amps, I build them, so from Ampeg to Dr Z, we can clone it.
I have a 2014 neck thru Carvin (Kiesel ) that cost around $1100.00 the craftsmanship and play-ability are second to none. It easily surpasses my 2011 Gibson Les Paul and American Strat which are both great instruments. I hope to buy another Kiesel soon.
First time checking out the "live" Q & A...seems live a bunch of cool, respectful fans, but what REALLY strikes me is how much of a flat out, cool ass DUDE Phil is...!
i took the plunge into pedals last month and went with a Roland Blues Cube and have been loving it. I'm in a apartment so needed something with headphones and I've really been enjoying the hell out of it. Plus I got a minor blemished one and it was in new condition and i saved about $100.
I have a Schecter C1 factory 2nd with a small dent in the top and saved over $200 on a $500 🎸 from that east coast distributor. Fantastic way to save 💰
A US Guitcon would give Framus and other overseas brands more exposure in the North American market. And more people could attend because traveling costs are lower.
What do you do with all that gear? This is not a criticism by the way. :) I like gear but I'm not a collector. You seem to have more pedals and amps than one could use. What is that orange guitar behind your head in this video?
Phil loved your Guitcon videos. I'm now obscessed with Framus, but they're really expensive. Do you think they can get a US foothold at their high price point?
Great Q and A Phil. Check out Ross Campbell, a wonderful Scotsman, looks young but boy can he play and teach. "We need to move beyond the limits of 'pattern-based' playing and confidently improvise in any position on the fretboard, and turn scales into melodic solos." Listen to his playing and you will subscribe, believe me, cheers.
Semi-hollows with p90's & feedback. P90's are noisy but apart from filling the holes with cloth (old tee's) thing to remember get less to little feedback if you play clean or just at break-up & also don't face the amp or be right up close when playing. But play with any real gain or distortion & you are going to get feedback especially if in close proximity to the amp. As the pu's will set up a 'loop' to the amp.
Yeah. I Looooove my fuzz pedal though... I love that vintage, Gary Clarke Jr. sound, fuzz, P-90's. But man, my wildcat just feeds back like an angry woman.
Micha "but not quite as angry as an ex-wife?" My Epiphone Casino is angrier than a fat angry ex wife! Kids, we buy and love our full hollow BECAUSE they scream and howl! It's called rock and effing roll!!! Can I get an Amendee!!?? Lassie's and Lads - THIS IS why we love full hollow, Epiphone Casinos - Hit it Johnny! th-cam.com/video/BGLGzRXY5Bw/w-d-xo.html Anymore questions??????? Jack
You either live with what is left after pressured wax potting or you just take different pickups or a different guitar. There is a reason why solid body guitars were made and why there are humbuckers. Those guitars aren't meant for lots of distortion. As you said, everything clean with a little something sounds great to get certain tones. And they're exactly made for that range. For everything else, take a different guitar. Stuffing a hollowbody is like buying a guitar with an original Floyd Rose and blocking it shut. I'd also recommend to try different cables, check the whole power line and the amp too. It can work better with some amps and as you said...positioning on stage.
Hey Phil, my thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family! Also, there is a place for NAMM for you (and us) if you have the time and energy. PLEASE, DO NOT FEEL GUILTY about your Guitcon experience!!!!!!! It would not have been very good for us if YOU were not excited about the whole thing, really. I have been to a lot of trade shows and exhibits in my own industry (IT) and some have been really boring, but others just are cool, and we are learning through them all. I am looking forward to the next Guitcon, and hope you get the chance to host those live interviews. :-)
Phil man, I love your channel and I watch all your videos. Can't say that of anyone else. Sorry about your personal tragedy, I could see you choke up a little. I hope the pain eases with time.
phil.... I have gone to guitar center and was asking about a used pedal....when that employee answered me...he walked away before I could ask for him to get it for me....I walked out.......and bought it at another store for about the same price......
??? Comments Phil, You are right about Gibson and their business practices using ridgelight wood over ebony, but when I hear "Gibson is for collecting and Epiphone's are for playing". That suggests arrogance on Gibson's way of doing business. Even back in the 70s! I rather play Gretch or Guild over Gibson and more towards Epiphone's (maybe) only due to it being part of Gibson's umbrella over their acquired ownership. I also read or heard Epiphone's make a better electric guitar over Gibson's Les Paul's except they make a D shaped neck over the C shape neck I normally play on other guitars like Fender or Harley Benton or acoustics like Martin's to Taylor's which I mainly use to record with. The nicer the feel, the better my recordings are. Harmony's use to make cheap looking guitars, but they feel nice to play and record with. I'm also becoming a big fan of under wound copper coils from DeArmond, P90s and single coil pickups. Humbuckers are best split-coil 4 conductor wire for tonal choices and treble splitting. The only thing is knowing electronics (my dad from 57 to 94 repaired TV, hifi to pro equipment and more) and when to draw a line and mine is phasing the Humbuckers only because after I tried it, the tonal characteristics was not enough to make a difference? Your mileage may vary. I also don't do well with small compartments and damaged hands with arthritis. Making the fingerboard and necks that's harder for me.
IMPORTANT FOR YOU PHILLIP! actually, dislikes will bury your videos and they will not be featured as recommended videos... it used to be like that but they changed it
Gibson? So much debate here, but I agree with Phil on this one. I think Gibson should bring it back to two lines under the Gibson brand name. The 1st is the veteran player demographic in the $1200 - $1800 range, and the stupid elite line for those that can afford it $2000 - $4000 max. Gibson just needs to get it together on the quality control. Generally speaking Gibson can learn a lot from Epiphone (or let's be honest PRS)
21:50 Dude comes to a jam with a $5000 Gibson Les Paul and some boutique tube amp he probably sold his first born for, proceeds to make our ears bleed for 20 minutes. Another dude walks in with a Squire Tele and a Peavey Bandit and makes sweet sweet music. True story... don't be a gear snob!
In the case of $200 vs. $2000 guitar: you could find a bad cheap guitar easily and you can find a great expensive guitar fairly easily. I think if branding is taken out of consideration, then consistency would be the next factor. If you take 10 high end guitars off the line at random 7, 8, or 9 should be perfect. If you grab 10 cheap guitars, I'd expect a few bad, most to be ok, and maybe 1 or 2 that were perfect. Just my thoughts
One thing you never mentioned is say you send the axe back to Gibson and they pull the number plate and issue a new one now magic it's a new one and they do this I know I just can't say how because person still works there.
ZblockWoW . That was only an awkward video of Jason and Tone King, discussing a recent TK video on Ibanez v Kiesel. Jason has since taken it down, as it came across as a bit argumentative. So nothing much really. But TK fans were not happy and have been having a go at Jason on YT for no reason.
Im not a fan of TTK at all, but I found that video completely insulting to the man and Jason handled it very poorly and came across extremely unprofessional. No only that many people, including myself feel that he was quite obnoxious in other videos and the jams. He kept on trying to be very alpha male and take the spotlight. He would often sing high pitched over Phil X when doing backup vocals or run on stage when he wasn't involved and shove a mic in peoples faces. He would jump in awkwardly in the discussions on stage and try and make things about him and his opinions/jokes that really bothered a lot of fans. I think most of the youtubers are nice and didn't say much about it, but you could see they were visibly annoyed with his behavior. He really came across poorly over the event and I think the tone king video was the thing that really hurt his reputation and upset so many people.
yeah, one comment hit the nail that he was too try hard all the time. Could of been me, but even Phil X was getting annoyed with him but tried to hide it in a joking way. Perhaps his passion & personality is misinterpreted, but it certainly presented as annoying to me.
Absolutely. I think everyone at the event played it off and made light of his actions so as not to have any trouble, but there were multiple times where their body language and facial expressions showed they were annoyed. I hadn't heard of the guy, and wasn't familiar with his channel before guitcon, but I saw enough to make me not want to check it out.
I'm not much of a TKK fan myself but subbed him after the Jason Vid due to just the way he didn't rise to Jason's accusations/Insinuations. Jason did have some legit points but his attacking demeanor over powered them. First I heard of a lot of utubers there and certainly wouldn't waste time watching any other of Jason's vids. Was there any utubers you subbed from the Guitcon event?
Factory second,...ha ha Here’s how Marshall’S distributor “Yamaha Australia” deals with factory seconds. I purchased what was supposed to be a brand new Marshall JTM 60 from Venue Music. It kept frying power transformers so I returned it twice for warranty repairs. Twice they sent it to Phase Engineering for the work and they just kept replacing transformers. Under warranty guidelines they can’t perform a simple mod to fix the problem permanently. I rang Phase to check on the ETA after the second tranny cook out quoting the amps # serial no and the kid there inadvertently blew the whistle on Yamaha when he told me that the amp had been repaired and returned to Murphy’s Music over twelve months ago. Hold on, “Murphy’s Music 12 months ago” WTF is going on ? Turns out it was bought and returned twice by Murphy’s to Yamaha who had it repaired and re-sold it to Venue Music as A BRAND NEW AMP ! Got that it was resold AS NEW ….Crooks This was a few years ago so Yamaha may not be Marshall’s distributor any more [I wouldn't be surprised]
Duesenberg is European, so I bet they're constanty trying new things to try to expand in US. Especially since they have a link to the old car company. They have the best P90s on the planet, IMO. They're very proud of their tremolo system, which I haven't got to try yet. Evert Zeevalkink has three awesome demos on TH-cam of different Duesenbergs.
exciting new amp company?? Check out 3rd Power Phil if you haven't heard them yet. I think the CSR 40 is one of the best new amps ive ever heard. so versatile and would replace a lot of other amps for you.

Phillip, in regards to channels for learning music theory, I highly recommend Michael New. I am a guitarist trying to learn theory. Michael has an excellent approach to teaching and covers from the most basic to complex topics. Hope you check him out!

The best Q & A in TH-cam!
Loved everything you mentioned about brands/TH-cam and Framus.
I have a Harley Benton tele and it's ridiculously good. I have played it to death.
If a mahogany tree falls in the Forest and no one is around to hear it.... is it still Tonewood? :)
I've been fairly impressed with the guitar center employees in my area lately. Boston and Danvers MA, and the Nashua NH locations are the ones that I frequent. For the most part, they've been very helpful, friendly and courteous.
I am starting to see a lot of people direct mount their pickups!
What guitar is hanging just to the right of the seafoam green telecaster???
got a pretty new ce 24 that's developed a static-related crackling sound as I slide my hand up and down the neck; it stops when I pop the push-pull and split the pickups. What gives?
Marty’s Music is a great music learning channel
It is. I think of Marty as the Walt Disney of yt guitar stuff.
Me, I just stand there and start singing real loud.
To quote the revered prophet Stevie Ray Vaughan:"You're gonna miss me, little darlin, the day that I'm gone"
Anyone know what kind of bass that was? The new that Phil said he just bought.
Take care!
too Ryan from southeast michigan. As a bass player for 11 years what are your favorite pedal types not counting Looper, phasers ,and synth wah.
Seems the stars all aligned for this event. Glad for all the you-tubers who got to experience this event(like the summer of love revisited). It's been wonderful getting to know you guys, Thanks again.
i missed the show...i wanted to ask how do you feel about the chapman guitars qualitywise and playability. thanks phil!
Seems I missed things but hows bass players experiences with tinkering their old guitar pickups into their project basses
Best chat ever! Love your insight on the business overall.
Sorry I missed this one live it was excellent. The Index of questions and comments was very appreciated.
Hi Phil. You mentioned that you still do repairs. If you don't have the guitar shop anymore, where do you do repairs out of? I'm local. Thanks.
2nd are usually some form of devation from the normal stock even sometime a defect.
Also Phil any experience grinding out the nickle silver fret wire at an incredibly faster rate after changing to daddarios super steels in comparison with star less steel fret wire
Hi Phil,I am looking to buy a nice vibe (meaning univibe) pedal. Any that you might recommend?
w00t 2h+ live stream. Not complaining here at all. Always a pleasure, Phil. Thank you 🤘
When talking about direct-mount pickups, it’s important to remember that he was playing stadiums and standing in front of massive stacks. At those volume levels, microphonic effects from anything that isn’t nailed down are likely to be much more intrusive…
Have you ever played a GLP studio lite? I have one from 91 it plays and sounds awesome!!
Hey Phil! Have you tried out the Supro 1600 Supreme? Thoughts?
some of us only have one guitar , one amp and a small assortment of pedals...we don't have the cash flow Phil..you have something!
Just like to watch. Learn alot. Thanks.
I have a 2014 neck thru Carvin (Kiesel ) that cost around $1100.00 the craftsmanship and play-ability are second to none. It easily surpasses my 2011 Gibson Les Paul and American Strat which are both great instruments. I hope to buy another Kiesel soon.
hey Phil what is your take on the new Marshall d s l 100. amps on dependability?
can you review the orange duosonic?
Phil, even your reviews of your friends are honest and candid: My buddy Ralph, “kind of a jerk sometimes.” That was classic.
How about a Framus review on your new Guitar
First time checking out the "live" Q & A...seems live a bunch of cool, respectful fans, but what REALLY strikes me is how much of a flat out, cool ass DUDE Phil is...!
i took the plunge into pedals last month and went with a Roland Blues Cube and have been loving it. I'm in a apartment so needed something with headphones and I've really been enjoying the hell out of it. Plus I got a minor blemished one and it was in new condition and i saved about $100.
Great show. Is there a USA dist. or dealer for Harley Benton and if will their be one coming soon?
I have a Schecter C1 factory 2nd with a small dent in the top and saved over $200 on a $500 🎸 from that east coast distributor. Fantastic way to save 💰
A US Guitcon would give Framus and other overseas brands more exposure in the North American market. And more people could attend because traveling costs are lower.
What do you do with all that gear? This is not a criticism by the way. :) I like gear but I'm not a collector. You seem to have more pedals and amps than one could use.
What is that orange guitar behind your head in this video?
Great show, great point about the companies
Phil I have the Harley Benton CST24 hb ( 24 fret semi acoustic PRS clone) and i can confirm its freaking awesome .
Phil loved your Guitcon videos. I'm now obscessed with Framus, but they're really expensive. Do you think they can get a US foothold at their high price point?
7:00 Parametric EQ with Q control.
Blues Cube vs Boss Katana, cabinets on the Blues Cube are a more expensive to build (Plywood vs MDF)
Rock Writer MDF is still cheaper, not saying better vs worse. Sound is subjective, material cost is not.
what is your thoughts on PRS reclamed wood guitars ?
I have one and love it.
Amazing! Framus has only been known for Bill Wyman's bass! Not a big name company!
We don’t need anymore expensive pedals
+Jeremy Carlson but not quite as angry as an ex-wife?
Haha, not quite. Close though.
Micha
"but not quite as angry as an ex-wife?"
My Epiphone Casino is angrier than a fat angry ex wife!
Kids, we buy and love our full hollow BECAUSE they scream and howl! It's called rock and effing roll!!! Can I get an Amendee!!??
Lassie's and Lads - THIS IS why we love full hollow, Epiphone Casinos -
Hit it Johnny!

Anymore questions???????
Hi Phil, just wanted to say I love your videos and I really appreciate your philosophy on guitars. Thank you for what you do!
Wtf?! A GC that chains their product to the wall? My local GC is not in the best of areas and I don't think they do that.
I bought a Schecter C-1, b-stock, $150 off of retail. Most days it is my favorite guitar
Crimson Guitars likes to do the direct mount of the pickups and they look sweet.
Mine was too! Camp San Saba. He guarded the most infamous Nazi war criminals(M.P. Volunteer not drafted) during Nuerumberg trials. Creepy huh.
Pete is a nice Canadian guy. He would not have made you feel uncomfortable no matter what. :)
And honest review scares companies
Soup does a great cover of "Baby, Hit Me One More Time".
Factory seconds: the original relic job
Hey man, don't apologize for the family tragedy, or putting family first.
Ebony is my fav Fretboard.
Hey Phil did you hear about Gibson closing and selling their Memphis factory because they are 520,000,000 in debt?
A factory second is any Gibson over four thousand dollars.....Ooooooo
21:50 Dude comes to a jam with a $5000 Gibson Les Paul and some boutique tube amp he probably sold his first born for, proceeds to make our ears bleed for 20 minutes. Another dude walks in with a Squire Tele and a Peavey Bandit and makes sweet sweet music. True story... don't be a gear snob!
Music theory videos? "Music is Win" and "Scott's Bass Lessons"
Any company that ignores the TH-cam influence is out of touch with amateur i. e. bedroom guitar player numbers.
Damaged guitars used to be used as "spiffs", to give to employees!
One thing you never mentioned is say you send the axe back to Gibson and they pull the number plate and issue a new one now magic it's a new one and they do this I know I just can't say how because person still works there.
You know, after I toured the Memphis Gibson factory where 335s are born, all was forgiven.
So... is there something that happened at GuitCon with Jason Macnamara??
Phil you don't need to apologize for taking some time to deal with family / personal tragedy. :-)
Factory second,...ha ha
Here’s how Marshall’S distributor “Yamaha Australia” deals with factory seconds.
Got that it was resold AS NEW ….Crooks
This was a few years ago so Yamaha may not be Marshall’s distributor any more [I wouldn't be surprised]
Hey Phil try Rick Beato for theory and lessons, the guy is amazing and his son Dylan is a prodigy..
Carbon nanotubes!!!
I rarely get the impression that you know why you own the gear you do. :-)
Desi Serna s who you want for theory. Really has in depth explanations for it all with books too.
We buy expensive things because we need to reassure ourselves that we are worth nice things.
exciting new amp company?? Check out 3rd Power Phil if you haven't heard them yet. I think the CSR 40 is one of the best new amps ive ever heard. so versatile and would replace a lot of other amps for you.
Gibson has value because the icons in days gone by chose Gibson . There were not a lot of choices back then. Gibson “were” innovators.
I'd like to see Nick in the states and in the Blues there at gitcom
Good call Scott, Mike Hermans would be a fine addition as well!

Phillip, in regards to channels for learning music theory, I highly recommend Michael New. I am a guitarist trying to learn theory. Michael has an excellent approach to teaching and covers from the most basic to complex topics. Hope you check him out!
Check out (As if the name isn't a draw) Guthrie Trapp as you go along. Nashville hot-shoe player. Come for the kickin, stay for the theory nuggets.
Picking, not kicking. Nobody gettin' kicked. No sir.
Is John mayer really the Michael Bolton of blues guitar?
ask bob weir
kitano0 is Bob Weir the Justin Timberlake of the Grateful Dead?
ha...I wouldn't say that about anybody....
