    My personal take on this is that at the time that Simon was still pooping in his nappy (daipers for the Americans), Blackberry's were incredible leading edge technology. No doubt Psion are or were another company that could have still been with us and not making terrible car software if history had been different, but... Oh yes, and android rules. The Oscars give out those insanely expensive gift baskets to all nominees, all presenters, plus the winners get another more insanely expensive one. New and small businesses really compete to get their products in the gift baskets.
    It was a big deal a couple years ago when a Canadian woman who sold knitted hats on Etsy got a request to put her hats in the gift baskets.
    I actually think a story on the gift baskets and the gift suites where companies give out lots and lots of expensive product (including jewellery and electronics) would be really interesting. Or just a story on how much free product companies give to celebrities and "influencers" and how many sales that actually translates into for them.

    • @medes5597
      @medes5597 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The gift baskets aren't actually affiliated with the Oscars and the Oscars dont like them. They don't get them on the night, they get them like weeks earlier and the Oscars has tried to stop them the last few years. They also only give them to the top hundred nominees. Tech nominees don't get them.
      The gifting suite is just items from the sponsors.

    • @Terri_MacKay
      @Terri_MacKay 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@medes5597 I remember when the gifting suites just gave out small samples, now some of them give away things worth hundreds or thousands of dollars. I remember seeing Cameron Diaz talk about a clothing sponsor who was giving out jeans and shirts at an event and that's how she did her Christmas shopping, by getting freebies for everyone she knew. That pissed me off so much that a multi millionaire would do something that greasy!!
      I didn't realize that the Oscar organizers didn't actually have anything to do with the baskets. I wonder who actually puts them together and gives them out?
      I know that not all of the nominees and winners keep them. I read that George Clooney donates his so it can be auctioned off for charity. And I can't remember who it was, but a few years ago someone (I think an actor) gave his to his limo driver.

    • @medes5597
      @medes5597 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Terri_MacKay jesus christ, that's so greedy. Seth Macfarlane spoke about how he literally sends things back to companies or sends them a cheque because if he wants their product, he'll pay for it and if he doesn't, he doesn't want to waste their money. He says that way he doesn't feel like he's taking advantage or that they expect something from him in return - and then she's just like "yeah I'll have everything so I can save money because I clearly don't have enough of it". Ugh.
      There was an article maybe two years ago in the Hollywood Reporter that said the gift bags/baskets/whatever they're officially called were organised by a marketing firm who hand picked about half of the stuff and the other half was companies who paid a lot of money to get into the bag, which basically both paid for the other stuff they had selected *and* paid them for putting it together. It went into detail about how the academy has got less tolerant of them as the Oscars gifting suite has gotten more and more elaborate and more and more lucrative and how they went from being given out on the night, to being given out within their limo for the night to what it is now which can be like weeks earlier.
      Also speaking of doing different things with them, apparently last year or the year before, Grimes ended up with 4 of them because she went around saying she hadn't got one despite getting an Oscars invite and so various famous people gave her theirs and then the company heard she was asking people and sent her one. So she had like $800,000 worth of stuff or something ridiculous.

I worked for a corporation where they issued us a Blackberry for company use. I had an iphone, but we were barred from using them for corporate communication or emails. Blackberrys had more security than all other mobile devices, therefore less likely to get hacked.

    Danny missed the turning point. It wasn't the introduction of the smart phones per se, although Blackberry lost handily for it, and no, I never saw that many Blackberries among teenagers, but I did among the young professionals and up for a very good reason: encryption. It was during this time that the public was pretty much informed that your standard phone could be hijacked and listened on if you had the right equipment, and aside from police, the people who had the right equipment were reporters. Suddenly executives and politicians demanded secure communications, provided by a private server with an encryption system that no government had access to, even the Canadian government where RIM and Blackberry were located. And for a while all was good, until it became noticed that citizens in "troubled" countries were using the Blackberries without fear of being listened in by their own government. Bans were announced, deals were made, and to continue selling phones in such countries, Blackberry gave up their encryption. Nearly overnight, the phones were regarded as compromised and dropped including, but nowhere limited to, by the entire U.S. government.
    Without the encryption strengths the Blackberry was a poor competitor to the already more powerful smart phones and the rest, as they say, is history.

    • @meetoo594
      @meetoo594 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yup, they gave encryption keys to Saudi and a few other `questionable` regimes and iirc it resulted in people being jailed/tortured/killed as dissidents were using BBM thinking it was secure. The negative reaction when the press published details of these shady deals totally destroyed RIM`s credibility right at the time Apple, Microsoft and Google were gaining traction. Im sure theres a lesson to be learned there.

Nokia had one the fit the Jeep Cherokee like a glove. I remember customizing my blackberry with new color, replacing the wheel, the screen other parts were replaceable cheaply. Now you have to replace the iPhone for the most part. Screen was $20, $5 for wheel, $15 battery it was awesome. It was nice being able to text without looking at the phone lol.

      There are models of phones coming in 2020 with physical keyboards. It might only be a briefly lived comeback. The phone manufacturer is called TCL, and I am not sure if this is anything more than a niche company like Vertu. I know nothing!
      Apple certainly is not getting this any time soon.

    • @GeorgeVCohea-dw7ou
      @GeorgeVCohea-dw7ou 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I posted about 20 seconds early, and it was never explained what TCL is outside of Blackberry.
      I am normally one of those people who post early, but I partially assumed, incorrectly, that TCL would not be mentioned at all. The only thing I had ever heard of TCL is that they were planning to release a line of Android phones with physical keyboards sometime around the end of Q2 2020. Since this company is essentially just releasing their version of the Blackberry phone they previously produced, it is not such a big deal.
      TCL is apparently not like Vertu in any way!

Also despite keeping the security patches up to date, they didn't update much the Android version. The Snapdragon 800 sieries of the time heated up quickly and was outdated and BB were too stubborn to allow us to root it and install our own system. The touch-sensitive keyboard felt great, the 16MP camera snapped excellent photos (if you had the patience to wait for it) and the slider was satisfying.

    What made BlackBerry such a business beast was its instant messaging. It became a back channel in companies. Only the top level exec's would have them (initially) and using Rim's server they bypassed corporate IT departments. As they became more common their cachet declined. They required a monthly fee for their messaging capability. The death knell was an internal conflict at RIM that had them removing capabilities to avoid conflicting with legacy devices. That led to the final model cratering.

  • @cmullings9721

    Hey Simon, I remember the Blackberry of 2002. It was marketed more for businessmen, at that time. The popular craze came after they made phones cheap enough for teens and young adults.

  • @armedwithjello

    I live in Waterloo, and a lot of my friends used to work for RIM back i the day. Yes, it was generally pronounced as "rim", and yes, it was an ongoing joke that university of Waterloo computer engineering co-op students would want nothing more than to "get a RIM job" for their co-op term. We were sorely disappointed when they dropped the name, although most of us in town still refer to it as RIM because, well, it's RIM!
    Most of my friends who worked there were coaxed away by the likes of Google and others, although I still have a couple of friends who work there. Although BlackBerry no longer makes hardware, it did licence the name BlackBerry to TCL for their handsets. I currently have a BlackBerry KeyOne, which is a fantastic device. I did have one of the PRIV phones, and it was pretty great except that it had a problem with the battery heating up during use. The PRIV was the first of the Android BlackBerry devices. I had a Z10, which was the last of the BlackBerry OS devices. Their OS was great for stability and functionality, but absolutely did suffer once people stopped making apps for it. by then, the OS was supposed to be able to sideload Android apps, but they didn't work properly.
    Lazaridis is pronounced Lah-zah-REE-dis. One of his biggest mistakes was that he decided that BlackBerry devices would be exclusively for business use. While in university, my husband's friend got a RIM job and showed off one of the very early devices. They asked if he could write Tetris for it, and a couple of days later the friend showed off the Tetris game he had programmed for it. However, he said it nearly got him fired, because Lazaridis found out about it and announced loudly at the office that anyone caught writing games for any BlackBerry would be fired on the spot. Later, as the iPhone gained popularity due to its many fun apps. Lazaridis relented and the company tried to play catch-up.
    Another mistake was that RIM's founders started out with a packet radio system, which saved battery power by having the cell tower signal the device to wake up rather than the device constantly pinging the tower. Lazaridis thought it should be used for truck telemetry, but nobody was interested in it. When he started putting it in pagers and phones, it did well, but he refused to licence the technology to other mobile makers. Had he done so, he would have gotten royalties from every text and call ever sent. Instead, competitors developed their own systems an eventually packet radio went out of use altogether in favour of industry standards.
    There was also the terrible mistake of making the BlackBerry Playbook. Woefully underpowered and running the QNX operating system, it had extremely limited usefulness and very few apps that worked with it.
    Today, BlackBerry makes a lot of software for automotive screen interfaces, but now many vehicles are using Google and Apple systems instead so even that is waning. TCL announced recently that it would be making no more BlackBerry devices. I don't know where the company is going from here.

    I admire the restraint that is shown on the other channels Simon does, since now I know how truly sarcastic and witty he is naturally. Must be hard work to read some of those other scripts with a straight face.

    How did I miss this one!?!? I STILL mourn my Blackberry, & I never cared that I was the odd one out at the time....tho was well past the supposed 2002 peak when I was using it & despite being mocked I used it until my last model would no longer work on my mobile plan (could've be due to being in NZ cuz my US relatives still had them a bit longer).
    Besides the privacy, I miss the fact that I could LEGIT message w/o looking at my phone & 100% by feel w/90-95% accuracy!
    Yeah, I'm seriously gonna go cry over this loss, AGAIN! ....once it was possible to text & drive w/o looking at your phone & w/o being recorded & tracked at the same time. :'-(
