Great stuff here Dave. I love my striker guns but always had a soft spot for 1911's. Tried my friends Prodigy last year and it was so smooth and accurate. I also tried a Shadow 2. These are like race guns. Built for speed.
I have the 5” with nearly 800 plus rounds. Zero malfunctions from the get go. Easily one of my favorites in my stable. However my friend’s 4.25” is going through some growing pains. Several failures to go into battery per mag. We ran somewhere around 200 rounds with different weights, fmj and hollowpoints through it.
I love my Prodigy. Compete USPSA, IDPA and Steel matches. And it is untouched. Trigger at 3lb/4oz. Runs every ammo including my hand loads without a problem. The magazines are problem free as well. (Apparently the early ones had issues.) Vortex optic. I’ve had three Hex optics (SA’s product) and returned all three with issues. They refunded the total amount. Great customer support. I wouldn’t trade it for a Stacatto. To be honest - I don’t see much of a difference in the base model and I’ve shoot several. And Dave said it best: A lot of them need to go back to Stacatto to get them to run right, including my battle buddy’s .
I have a 4.25 prodigy and no issues with 1,600 rounds so far. I love mine and want the 5inch bad. They are best of the $1,500 2011 and that is including the upgrades from CGW kit. Great video.
2024 Staccato P, have about 6,000 rounds through it. I haven’t had a singe malfunction with it. I’ve shot blazer brass 115s, 124s and Hornady critical duty 135s… to be honest I’ve heard the complete opposite about higher end 2011s. Staccato has an amazing reputation for reliability. Atlas too. Springfield is the brand I’ve been told to steer clear of.
Also for the peanut gallery's consideration: Tisas 1911DS priced around 800. I've got just about 1000 rounds through it so far and have had 3 failures all of which being my fault (1st was me being too excited and didn't clean the factory grease off, 2nd and 3rd was the exact same issue with my thumbs riding the slide causing failure to extract). Comes in a 5 and 4.25 configurations and both are cut for RMSc. Also comes in a bougie version called the Nightstalker with upgraded trigger, 5.5in threaded barrel, slide cuts, flared magwell, and a grey finish for about 1000 USD. All variations are machined parts, no MIM like the Prodigy.
i have the 4.25. have about 2000 rounds through it since summer last year. had to send it back to springfield for repairs, but since getting it back it's been pretty good. biggest issue the slide release. wish it was bigger, but it's just something you have to train.
Out of the box my 4.25 prodigy wouldn't go through 10 RDS without failing to go into battery by about 0.1". The disconnector was hanging up the slide. EGW parts fixed it and it seems that it's standard protocol to replace all MIM parts on the prodigy and you'll have a great pistol
Funny , most people grew up or started shooting 1911's long before striker fire pistols became popular , always fun for the range/ competition , duty ( in clean areas ) , otherwise they are not very reliable when compared to many other pistols today ...Only difference today than 113 years ago is capacity , and even less reliability due to higher tolerances -- marketing 😉
I can safely say the recoil on a 4.25 prodigy is noticeably lower than a Staccato P. So if you can get a Prodigy to be as reliable as a Staccato, you’ve got a better gun overall Imo (I only mention recoil and reliability because they’re virtually identical when it comes to other factors like accuracy, ergonomics, etc etc)
Well yea the problem is is that they’re wildly overpriced, custom firearms that start at over 2 times the price as the prodigy and can go up to over 4x the price with a few custom upgrades like a DLC barrel coating, expedited shipping, 3 simple slide cuts on the front of the slide etc. you can get a fully custom prodigy done for less than half the price of a bone stock staccato XC and it will be the same gun and shoot almost exactly the same and has the same cold hammer forged match grade barrel. You’re paying 4x the price for a 5 percent “better” gun.
Still overpaying for what you get . Any aftermarket kit for a prodigy will make it perform better than a stock staccato. as long as your competent enough to do the work yourself and not waste money on a gunsmith
Everything I've heard about these Prodigy pistols has been 50/50. I have friends that swear by them and friends that think they are trash. There is no in between

Technically Glocks strikers are not fully cocked that is why they don’t have the best triggers. However pretty much all other striker fired guns are 100 precocked.
I have a few thousand rounds through my Staccato P. Dead stock pistol, not running a light or an optic. The pistol has never had even a hint of a hiccup.
I’m really surprised the Staccato fanboys aren’t on here telling everyone how their stock guns run amazing, etc. Staccato guys really seem to hate the Prodigfy, but I love my 4.25.
The plus side of the gun world, buy a new gun and buying all the accessories to go with it, helping men understand their wives better. Awesome benefit.
So can I tell the old lady the $1,500 is really money going towards counseling for our relationship??? Although this could get really expensive because she shoots also,if she likes this platform we might have to get a second mortgage.
I can guarantee beyond a shadow of a doubt no one is spending money to make an atlas run after buying it, because atlas wouldn't let a gun that doesn't run out the door.
You’d be surprised. I teach at a firing range and I see Staccatos, Atlas, and Nighthawks come by pretty regularly and It’s always the same story. Dudes bring them in and they constantly jam. If you’re not running specific ammo or if you put too much pressure on the slide with your grip, you’ll definitely get a malfunction. I haven’t really seen the prodigy all that much but I can sure as hell tell you 2011s are not reliable guns to begin with. Same thing with 1911s. The design is outdated. Doesn’t really matter what brand it is or how expensive they are.

Congrats on the two Prodigy DS pistols. I have the 5” and love it. I’ve had no issues with mine. Still prefer my Glock 19 for daily carry.

Picked up a used 5 inch for like a grand and traded an old glock 30 that I have shot in years and honestly, I am a fan.

They need a compact 3.7 inch version for carry and I would buy it for sure. Optics ready and rails in a compact would fit me better
