10 Questions with Tom Brady

- Seven-time Super Bowl champion, five-time Super Bowl MVP, fitness and wellness entrepreneur, IWC ambassador, and serious watch collector Tom Brady joins us this week on Hodinkee Radio. I could have done the whole “this week’s guest needs no introduction” bit - but that’s a hell of an introduction, right?
Shortly after Tom (we're tight now, so it's cool, we can call him Tom) won his latest Vince Lombardi Trophy, he joined Ben and me on a Zoom call from his home in Florida for some old-school watch talk. We covered how he got into watches, why they're meaningful to him, the ways he shares his hobby with his friends and family, and the pieces still on his grail list. Despite this guy being, well, him, he has some of the same concerns the rest of us do when browsing for a new one.
We also got into some more particular topics - for instance, what it’s like to be Tom Brady. He opened up about managing fan expectations over the years, how he keeps himself in the right place mentally and physically, and how he responds when someone names their kid after him. He also tells us what might be ahead after retirement (though he’s coming back next season, so we’ll have to wait to see what happens there).

yes, Tom Brady it´s an IWC Ambassador, but he answered about different brands, rolex, omega, etc so it´s fine, and he knows about watches because the comparisons he made with football were accurate

This is an IWC comercial and thats ok. Makes me like Tom Brady even more because, I like watches.
I recognize that part of HODINKEE getting more mainstream attention is having mainstream guests like Tom Brady. But when that host is literally an IWC ambassador who won't and is probably contractually obligated to only talk IWC both here and on the radio podcast, there are some questions about ethics that naturally get brought up. I'm conflicted about what to think but I know from a consumer's point of view, for both HODINKEE and IWC, I'm turned off. Because the truth is that if this opened with a "Sponsored by IWC" I wouldn't have batted an eye and I might have actually felt slightly better about it. I keep thinking about HODINKEE's video of that one Omega woman ambassador (I really didn't care to remember her name)... it's sort of the same thing. You guys created a watch enthusiast community and, therefore, we know when the guest is or isn't into watches. In both cases, brand ambassadors following the same formula of shilling a product without having a real connection or enthusiasm to watches or horology ends up having a terrible reception to HODINKEE audiences. HODINKEE innovated an entire industry but uses the same traditional formula of boring ambassadors shilling for watch brands? Maybe you guys might want to re-think the whole formula for partnerships with ambassadors. This isn't cable TV or some Federer Rolex ad before a tennis game.

I felt like Tom know a lot about watch, but since he sponsored by IWC he had to mention them on every question.
Tom used to rock the Milgauss but I suspect it doesn’t say IWC on the dial, so it may be dust in the wind (I think he may have given it to Edelman who I saw rocking the same watch).

I’m sitting here thinking “Wow this guy is really into IWC….” Then I read the comments and find that he’s actually an IWC ambassador? C’mon man. At least call it out somehow in the beginning. I mean, I like IWC too, but I’d rather hear about it from someone who is genuinely a collector or something. Even if Tom is/was an IWC collector, the moment you become a brand ambassador you give up that badge to the community.

How many watches does Tom have? What was his first watch? How did he get into watch collecting?
On prompting he did talk about other brands (personally I thought compare a brand to a team was a bit softball ... and the only time he mentioned - again only in passing with prompting - another brand other than IWC).
I would like to know more about the range in brands and watches/styles he has in his collection.

Why would he need to comment on helium escape valves. Clearly diver’s watches are not what Tom is into. He’s into pilot watches obviously and you sure don’t need a helium valve for one of those. In fact you only need a helium valve for professional divers watches, otherwise it’s just gimmicky on anything less!

Rolex is not all bling, if you know anything about the brand and watches. He's obviously paid by IWC for this shoot as well.
So the conclusion is that Tom isn't really a watch guy. At least throw in a 1-2 other brands to make it sound believable. I own the new big pilot and it's a fantastic piece, but damn their marketing team needs help.
