I like videos that SHOW the problem. I get tired of videos that just talk without showing. This one shows symptoms very well. Diagnosis steps are shown. You don't just say what you did. Also A-B-A. You showed the problem (A). Showed it fixed with the cap off (B). Then put the cap back on to make it go back to the original bad condition (A) again. You are able to "turn the problem on and off", showing a correct diagnosis.
Nice detective work… I wager that most techs would have diagnosed as a bad heat exchanger. You went the extra mile and figured out what was making it roll out. Nicely done!
Just an FYI. The switch you pointed to is not a rollout switch, it is a blocked vent switch since it is nowhere near the burners. Also, just another FYI, right above the status codes is an explanation of how to decipher the status flashes. The number of short flashes is the first digit and the number of long flashes is the second digit, so, it was displaying a 31 code.
Thanks for that Rick. I as scratching my head wondering why the roll-out was 'way over there', while there was obviously one at the top right of the burner inlets.
We're too many generations removed from direct hands on fire tending(campfires, coalstoves, woodstoves, etc.).. Oldsters generations ago taught us well about giving fire enough air to breath. When I was little ,my best friend had a coal fired furnace in the cellar just like in "The Christmas Story" , only his father was friendly with and he spent time teaching us all about tending it properly. I still remember the sweet smell. That's why coal oven 🍕is heavenly.
I like your style brother… There is only a handful of us ,that are great,at what we do. I would say it is because when one loves what they do,they become pretty darn good at it.Thanks for sharing your experiences brother.
as a meat cutter the store i was in had counter problems and young guys would come in and play around but the problem still was there, finally an older guy come in and we got talking and i showed him that the air was not circulating like it should so he figured out the problem and it never occured again, the store got new people to come in after all that crap.
The flue cap does have protrusions inside to limit the position on the pipe, but it looks like whatever those were gripping on the top of the pipe just corrode away and the cap dropped to where you found it.
Very instructive. I believe that's my problem because it's happened to other units in the complex that I manage. I'm too old to climb on roofs anymore so I need to get a young helper.
Thank you for this detailed video! We’re having furnace issues like this one, had a HVAC technician come look at it but didn’t fix it. We’ve paid him, but still have the same issues. Learning a ton on here to fix it ourselves..thank you!!!
Thanks for watching. Hope this helps. Just please be careful as this type of issue can be dangerous. I still recommend contacting a professional HVAC technician to check your unit. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much , I am having a similar issue , narrowing down my furnace noises . I don't have a bad rollout , but ignition bangs after a switch activates canceling fuel .Fan stays on , then igniter glows , fuel clicks 3 , or 4 times , the a loud thump , and burners ignite with a good blue flame , very small Orange streaks every few seconds flowing with blue flame , not rolling out . Looking into blocked flute , and others next .
Thank you!!! This is the best lead after a lot of reading and videos on what might be going on with our new furnace. Our buner actually rattle and blow out, eventually either catching or going into lockout
What’s up Wes , glad to see you are still at it and Im happy to see your channel getting traction. Please don’t stop. You were always dedicated to the your craft. A friend from service champ days. You rock dude
Hi there, thanks 4 expert diagnosis. I just had the rollout switch replaced but the hvac tech told the tenants possibly not to turn on the heat due to flame rollout. Tomorrow Im having a licensed tech that Ive worked with before check out the system and if more repairs r needed. Your video gave me a few places we can ck albeit we may need a new system wh is wh this tech recommended but if that is so, why wld he install a new switch. The unit is 3-4 yrs old. I got the info 2nd hand from the rental agent as I don't live there. Jan
Thank you, I've had to reset my high limit switch twice today, just entering furnace season, I know what to check for to be safe and a professional technician was already scheduled to come onsite for an inspection. I'll be sure to pass along my findings and let him take it from there. I can probably do it, but not betting my family's life on it! Great video, thank you!
Check draft, combustion with an analyzer and formulate an opinion. Excess backpressure (flue too small, too many elbows/offsets partial restriction very dirty or decomposing combustion chamber. The cap would be step one or beginning not the finis of the investigation. Exhaust gas temp would likely be high if draft and/or inlet air is not correct. Looked like a lot of flame there not staying where we want it - in the cumbustion chamber tubes. This is not a one diagnosis answer. Particularly on a unit that old I'd ring her out good. A 20 year old gas furnace with that kind of roll out still evident has problems just a new cap are not going to fix. Draft check, attic ventilation, inlet air adjustment, gas pressure, stack temp % CO in the stack. visual of the stack in attic as the top looked kinda ratty. *Also noticed it appeared they reduced the stack size coming out of the roof*! Wow see what I mean? The cap is a hint and evidence not the end of the diagnosis!! I respect your skills but 36 years of experience is wrapped up in this comment from me with the best of intentions to benefit you and all of us that want to do good work and keep our customers safe!
One time I found kids toys in a 90 plus gas furnace pvc fresh air intake and when I had the door off it would run fine and as I was tried to put the door on it practically grabbed it out my hands and shut and it would shut off
Thanks for posting this. We have gas wall heater it and seems to have some flame roll back. The flu vent is clear, How would i check for cracks? Thanks again
Hi The video is very good & informative . My Lenox furnace (2008) model, started shutting off aftet 15/20 minutes, i called 2 different HVAC certified technician and they both told me heat exchanger is gone and need to replace the whole furnace as its heating up the switch and it’s turning off.
Before you put on a new cap, what would the new cap fasten to. the venting is so chewed up, that top section of venting must also be replaced. don't just put a band-aid on it. Good diagnoses.
I had this with an oil boiler. The chimney caps slid down and blocked the top of the Chimney. The equipment ran fine for the first two minutes and then started popping in banging.
Put your hand over the small square area where the draft rollout switch is that you reset. If it isn’t negative pressure there, you have a blocked flue, and the draft safeguard switch is just doing its job.
Omg. It just check my furnace it did the samething. What sucks it's that i rent and the owners don't want to fix nothing. I also have a worn-out belt its breaking apart more than half ways. And i hear a boom noise metal explotion to my room vent.
Keep that cap; just put a pipe clamp on the chimney, or better yet just take a piece of 3 inch PVC and slip it over the chimney. That will support the cap, protect the chimney from further rust damage, and look more visually attractive -- for a cost of about 12 bucks for an 8FT length of PVC.
Thanks for the video. Great job finding the cause! But, shouldn't the pressure switch have not closed to prevent this? Is it stuck closed (control board should have detected this)? Is the correct pressure switch installed? Did you check the negative pressure on the switch with manometer?
"Tell me what a horrible technician I am" lmao they do troll hard. Thanks for the video

FYI it was unsafe to run a furnace when the venting is disconnected while testing for a blocked vent. Just spilling the flue gas in the space.
I don’t think the codes goes for all furnaces. Mine it fast flash then slow to read my codes. I have a Payne furnace
Thanks for that Rick. I as scratching my head wondering why the roll-out was 'way over there', while there was obviously one at the top right of the burner inlets.
Nice tip on how to check for a clogged vent pipe by removing vent piping from unit.
Thank you.

Great work columbo
That was great! Thanks for taking the time to help others learning the trade!
good job...simple solution..all the way from Monterrey Mexico...
This was a sweet cause-an-effect demo. Thanks!
Brilliant, you are an absolute genius
Really well done detective work and resolution. A+

Good job diagnosing the problem, a simple fix for someone who is a pro.
Do not forget to tell the customer to seal the roof shingle too. Good job on the analyzes.
Wow flame rollout from blocked vent. I didn't think it would do that because the pressure switch would keep it from coming on.
The flue cap does have protrusions inside to limit the position on the pipe, but it looks like whatever those were gripping on the top of the pipe just corrode away and the cap dropped to where you found it.
Like how you wet through the hole problem and how you fixed it that was a great help
Good catching.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
Great video! I learned more in this video than the last dozen videos about heat exchangers!
Thanks for watching. Glad I can help!
I just subscribed because of the excellent video and correct diagnosis.
Former product rep for Bryant. Well done sir!
Thank you so much!!!
Yep that was a great video, showing the problem made it 100 percent better.
very cool video. been doing hvac 2 yrs now always learning something new. thanks!
Good catch on that one, no screws holding that cap just dropping straight down
You have very good diagnostic skills!
Thanks. I hope this video helps you.
Great troubleshooting to learn from
Great Job ,, good work , nice trouble shooting
Good clip learnt a lot in that clip.
Glad it was helpful.
Very instructive. I believe that's my problem because it's happened to other units in the complex that I manage. I'm too old to climb on roofs anymore so I need to get a young helper.
Good job! Way to hustle.
Good find
Great multipoint check vid. Very useful. 👍

What a helpful video! I fill the thrill with your hand on the gas valve, ready to shut off the whole thing. Good finding!
Great troubleshooting!
Nice find
Alright yet another thing to check on our system hahah thanks!
The one I had the other day was clogged air filter overheating the auto safety in heat exchanger
Thank you!!! This is the best lead after a lot of reading and videos on what might be going on with our new furnace. Our buner actually rattle and blow out, eventually either catching or going into lockout
Great video as a newish maintenance tech this was a very educational video! Subscribed
Glad I could help!
Good job .
Great Find!!!

Thank you for showing the roof vent and the furnace on your phone at the same time. It was very informative.

Great job nighthawk!
Thanks for watching!
Great job and video like always
Nice editing. Nice video.
Thank you
Well done
Thanks.
Great info
Good stuff
Thanks for posting this. We have gas wall heater it and seems to have some flame roll back. The flu vent is clear, How would i check for cracks? Thanks again
good finding,im surprised the pressure switch was made the whole time but i guess it was border line of not, nice job
I know. You would think the pressure switch wouldn’t close. It was setting off the draft switch though. Good thing it’s there.
Good Job

If you have a cracked heat exchanger you need to either replace the heat exchanger or the furnace.
Thank you so much, even I could understand it! 👍🏽
Great video
Great. Video. Thanks
Before you put on a new cap, what would the new cap fasten to. the venting is so chewed up, that top section of venting must also be replaced. don't just put a band-aid on it. Good diagnoses.
I reattached the existing cap properly to get them heat for the night. Returned the next day and replaced the flue pipe and cap. Thanks for watching.
Excellent diagnosis
Great videos man keep them coming 👏 👌
Thanks! Definitely will!
Really nice vid!
Good explenation
I’d still check the heat exchanger for any damage caused by this.
Great find 👍🏻😊
Thanks a lot

Wow that’s nice thank you I have the same problem in my house now I can fix it 👍👍👍
Just subscribed because I love this stuff. Like the HD quality and the attention to detail. Please keep the videos coming!
Good catch!
Good job
Thanks!
thank you
Good work

Good job 😜
Nice video thanks dude
Good stuff right there...........😎✌️
Thanks for watching!
What about foam sensor sensing flame when gas is closed but there is not a flame
Omg. It just check my furnace it did the samething. What sucks it's that i rent and the owners don't want to fix nothing. I also have a worn-out belt its breaking apart more than half ways. And i hear a boom noise metal explotion to my room vent.

Should there be all that yellow flickering in the flame? What could be causing that?
It’s caused by the dust on the burners
Thank you for sharing
GOOD THROUBLESHOOTING
Love the music
We had a roll back from birds nesting in pipe.
Yikes!
xlnt work, great use of Facetime
it is a code 31. the sticker, right above your finger says the short flashes are the first number.
And what kind of camera do you have that transmits video to the phone. thank you
We used FaceTime on IPhones. I had a helper in the attic.
Thanks for the video. Great job finding the cause! But, shouldn't the pressure switch have not closed to prevent this? Is it stuck closed (control board should have detected this)? Is the correct pressure switch installed? Did you check the negative pressure on the switch with manometer?
The vent was clogged but not enough to affect the pressure switch
