Amazing again! Scary episode! I loved it. Just when John thought maybe he was understanding things. I really like Fuji. Lady Ochiba has the voice of an anime villain! This show is amazing. I have no words really for how good it actually is.
the death of the gardener would be the plot device needed for Blackthorne to mature in the sense of responsibility and the weight of his words and actions. We were first introduced to him as this foul-mouthed, loose tongued privateer, and that was what draws us to him also; so something big needed to happen for him to realize he needed to take his own words more seriously So Fuji (best waifu, fight me) apparently was aware of the thing between him and Mariko (Yes it was Mariko ho went and did the yobai with John on the previous episode) , and still does his best to serve. so when Buntaro came back (I was actually surprised how early he revealed he was alive, and not the fact he was alive), she asks Mariko to tell her if ever his host was in danger (subtext, if Buntaro were to lash out to john in anger if and when he finds out about the infidelity) as she is duty bound to protect the Hatamoto. that drinking contest, which is usually a form of male bonding, really wouldn't get Buntaro and Blackthorne to be closer together, as the latter got to transparent in showing her affection for Mariko; even the whole shooting thing was very telling as John shows his concern for Mariko openly in a culture where propriety takes precedence over anything, thus the beating. Next comes the whole 4D chess that's happening with Toranaga handling things in the aftermath of his son's blunder. Genius. He used it as an opportunity to teach his son an important lesson; flush out whoever manipulated his son to action; and pit Yabushige against his nephew Omi by having the uncle tell his nephew that the young guy was to take control of the artillery regiment instead of him. then near the end there's that cute part where Toranaga was SOOOOOOOO not interested to mediate on the bickering or whatever problem he sensed between Mariko and Blackthorne. Afterall, in the earlier episodes, Blackthorne presented himself as wanting to get the aid of Toranaga in order to wage war against the Portuguese, in the service of his Queen; so him wanting permission to leave was something out of character for from his point of view. I can almost see Toranaga rolling his eyes and saying under his breath, "I'm preparing for a war here and whatever is going on between you two is completely beneath me right now" Then there's the whole power move of the Taiko's Heir's mother as soon as she arrived in Osaka and talking to Ishido. [Side note, apparently, dry aging pheasants by hanging them with their feathers still on for a week or so is in fact a thing]
Little thing that had to be pointed out to me, but just another great and subtle detail. When Bunto laid his sword out, the blade was to himself, if the blade was turned toward Blackthorn, it would indicate he was an enemy. It is that kind of attention to detail that makes this so good. Something that 90% of the audience would miss. Saw another comment where a husband and his Japanese wife were watching the show, and she was having trouble keeping up as they are speaking period correct dialect. Think Shakespear. Lets also acknowledge it was wet for the entire episode. Snow and showing it melt. So when the earthquake cape, the mud slide made perfect sense.
iirc Fuji's late father was one of Toranaga's best generals during the Korea campaign, Toranaga gave a brief happy laugh when Blackthrone offered the swords as if the ghost of his general came back to help him once again, but not in the way he expected, which is a very nice touch.
Toranaga never went to Korea. It was Hideyoshi, the one who died in the beginning of the show. Fuji's father died as a cowards as what the show stated. The swords was worthless to those that know the truth. Blackthrone redeemed himself for the death of the gardener by presenting the swords to Toranaga, giving it a different meaning.
In the 16th century, it was the harshest and most brutal period in Japanese history. Japanese people today are much more sophisticated than they were then. Just as the English people of the 11th century are very different from the English of today.
You asked about how rough a read the book is. TBH, the book isn't a bad read. It's long, and involved, but not hard to follow. But there's also plenty of subtlety to dig out if you want. I personally feel that some of the cultural inaccuracies haven't aged well in the information age. The world is a much smaller place, easier to find accurate information, and richer, more complete pictures of history than what Clavell had when he wrote this, and he was a bit prone to indulging stereotypes and cultural caricature at times. That said, a remarkable amount of his research holds up, and regardless, the story is intriguing and full of characters with a great deal of depth. And yet, I have liked MANY of the changes this show has brought to the story. I still highly recommend the book, and it remains one of my favorite Clavell novels.
I'm glad for a show set in a society with patriarchal and misogynistic norms, some women operating behind the fences are manipulating the samurais like puppets.

So trueeee. She can be a seiyuu with that feminine villainous voice. I can hear her say "Ara! Ara! Ara!"
Lady Ochiba is in the show for less than 5 minutes and I’m in love with her voice already
So truueeee. It's like a seiyuu (voice actress) but an actual person. So feminine yet sounds cunning
Not gonna lie, I was kinda expecting for her to do the ohohoho laugh. She gave me an ojousama vibe.
多分1話に少し出演してたよ😊
太閤の最期のシーンで。
「天国とやらは貴方の尻の穴の奥にあるのかも知れんのう。そう思った事はないか?」
私も彼女が大好きです
@@RandalReid She does have the sort of voice one would expect an anime villain to have, doesn't she?
Super scary episode, what a roller coaster. But scariest of all was Lady Ochiba. Chills.
I’ve seen tbe first 2 episodes and hate having to wait a week. As soon as they’re all up there you’ll be my first port of call.
This episode was really really INTENSE

This episode is crazy

The actress "Fumi nikahdou"as Ochiba no kata will be a key person.

This show is so awesome
We finally get to see the real villain
Toranaga is the real villain. Ochiba is just a main antagonist.
ochiba is already GOAT bro
You’re not wrong!
Man this show is great I recommended after watching this. Do a review on the original

Just as the English people of the 11th century are very different from the English of today.
You think 10 episodes is sad? The original show was only 5 episodes.
Those episodes were movie length ranging from 1.5hr to 2.5hrs
