Got to love the good ol' complementary colours trick. It's almost always a good way to get nice, rich shadows. This is why I wish more tutorials went into colour theory. It's pretty easy to get a workable understanding of it, and it's transferrable to all kinds of colour schemes and paint jobs.
I have done something similar for Zombies and Nurgle based troops. Prime white and then paint the skin/armor the brightest bubble-gum pink you have. After it is dry use a neutral green wash (Biel-tan Green) or thinned down green contrast paint. After the green dries I then apply a flesh shade/wash (Reikland Fleshshade). It creates a nice naturally mottled tone of muted rotting/dead skin and armor with similar natural shadows as the red over green on the Space Marine. Works great if you have a horde army and want to get troops on the field asap.
I love these, for someone who doesn’t have a lot of time to paint these are perfect for me. Keep them coming, can’t want for the Ultramarines blue vid!
You're the first person I've seen using the artify brushes, I bought them when I started painting last year and they're amazing! As for painting the red over green just wow! That's fantastic
You're a really slick painter. Years ago someone pointed out to me that a basecoat of yellow helps red look brighter, and, of course, we know mixing red and green gets brown, which is a great shade for red. Brilliant! I probably would never have thought to paint red in this way.
I tried this technique. It showed me the difference between an average painter and a pro like Juan. When the red dried, I could see all my chaotic imperfections from the base layers. I’m actually excited about this. Not only is Juan teaching me a new technique, but it’s forcing me to be more careful with my dry brushing. Hopefully I can grow from this. ¡Mucho gracias señor!
The green makes tons of sense, red overtop makes a wonderful brown in the shadows as Reds tend to have...very few black or fully cold shadows on red, even when high shine metallic. Years ago I bought a bunch of Half painted marines that were Primed Dark Angel Green and I didn't clean them up before doing a Blood Angel paint scheme right on top...they were beautiful.
Really cool and genius. I think if I had used different colors for pre-shading, I probably would have used Iceheart or talassar blue. I didn't think the red would have come out this vibrant.
Legendary, mate. The green worked so well due to it being a complimentary colour, right? I've used it as a recess shade before, but seeing it here as a base colour is game-changing. Many thanks.
I also bought Artify brushes. I can not feel any difference from Army Painter or Artist Opus brushes - except for the price. I also like that they come with a dampening pad and some soap
Muchas gracias 🤜🤛
Could you make a video on how you get ideas like this? How do you know when a painting idea is a "good" painting idea? Like, did you know this would work because of the colour theory? Is it just intuition/experience and knowing how a paint works? Or you found it through trial and error? Or because you saw some other artist doing something similar and thought it would work?
Green and red are opposite colours on the colour wheel, and opposite colours contrast well. I'm surprised he didn't give it a passing mention during the green step, actually.
The trick for great vibrant armor colors seems to be starting with a contrast paint you wouldn't expect XD If I ever go back to Khador or start a Farsight Enclaves army, I'll give this a try
This is brilliant, but I'm not quite understanding the mechanics behind why this works. Wouldn't layering Red over Green create something brownish? In other words, why does this work? Would it make sense to apply to other complementary color combinations (e.g. Blue over Orange)?
Brown is a dark shade of red. The drybrushing he is doing gives the red a red hue but the green in the recesses creates a brown hue. Similar to how yellow over pink creates orange
Es impresionante el efecto logrado a partir del verde y quiero probarlo con las xpress color que tengo a la mano para ver qué tal queda, ya que también uso pinceles secos de colores equivalentes a los de tu video para preparar las xpress color.
Absolutely unreal, JH. The green underpainting is genius. Do you think this would work with Flesh Tearers instead of Blood Angels red for a richer, more purple tone for the armour?
Truly an amazing red for little effort! What color would you try over the green base for a black armor? Have a scheme that combines black and red armor panels and a single underpainting layer would speed up significantly.
I never thought to use a lighter green with a yellow tint to undercoat for red, thats genius! I just got Vallejos Phoenix Orange, and wonder what would be a good undershade for that one, as it has limited contrast potential (due to being "Intense"). Would you have a good way to get a very intense, and contrasty red-orange?
Very neat! I use a similar method (mostly with airbrush for speed), but instead of green it uses a very dark/purple blue (like a Payne's Gray) in the shadows and recesses. The resulting red is darker/grimier in the recesses, but overall less bright overall. Maybe better for a "grimdark" base recipe! Came for the paint process, stayed for the colour theory lesson!
Awesome video! How do you figure out what color to start the undercoat with? I've been working on an Alpha Legion color scheme using a dark teal with terradon turquiose... Wondering what a good base color for that would be.
Hello nice tuto for speed painters and drybrushing lovers like me! Have you tried the Red Baal contrats intead of the BA one? If not how do u think it would turn out? Any way congrats and keep up the good work!
I don't really need this but i still watch/like to support. I paint black templars ( found my own grimdark style and recipe ). Keep up the amazing content.

How to Paint Blood Angels:
Step 1: Paint a Mantis Warrior
LOL
I actually used Mantis Warrior Green for this as well since I didn't have the other one.

This is why I wish more tutorials went into colour theory. It's pretty easy to get a workable understanding of it, and it's transferrable to all kinds of colour schemes and paint jobs.
That is a ridiculously good looking red for contrast paints. Thanks for the information.

Is there a good alternative from vallejo for the dorn yellow and mantis green? @JuanHidalgoMiniatures

I'm not a serious painter and just want to get some nice looking minis. This no-skill series is perfect for me. Thank you very much!
I keep meaning to try this the other way round, as I heard red to green also works well. Would love to see you tackle more tricks like that

Seems like an Alpharius if you ask me 😅
Impossible, as I am Alpharius
I've mixed green with red for shading before, but never in a million years would have thought of it for underpainting. Brilliant.
Nice. I've been priming my Blood Angels in Vallejo Dark Green, and spraying Mephiston Red and Bloody Red from above for years!

I use Army Painter too. Artis Opus are far too expensive/marked up for what they are. Bit of a scam really.
Best price for your buck out there. I personally don't like the AP ones as they tend to shed too much hair for my liking. These ones are AMAZING
Can also be used to paint a watermelon colour scheme !
Always appreciate your work. Troed this and then put on some oil paints to getting things popping the way I like.
I absolutely love this method, it was tough painting my blood angel green initially, but the final result is great!
I did airbrush the final red coat
