There's a huge difference between the Vietcong and NVA. The NVA was the regular army, and by 1968, they were getting modern equipment from China and Russia. The Vietcong, the origin of the nickname "Charlie", were a guerilla force mostly made up of South Vietnamese civilians. The NVA fought the coalition forces in open combat, with traditional weapons and tactics. The Vietcong were the ones that gave the war its horrific reputation. They fought with traps, with deception, sabotage, and betrayal
I'm really big into military aviation and the fact that the Hueys got messed up really annoys me during the Vietnam War Hueys only had 2 main rotor blades and 2 tail rotor blades not 4 like they show here. The nose is also extended too far out and the exhaust pipe should be one big tube not 2 small boxes.
Did the apache exist at that time? Because I saw one and it kind annoys me because I never heard that in Vietnam would be something with apache helicopters
i'm surprised you didn't acknowledge they were using the wrong huey helicopter model, those looked post war with the twin engine looking load out instead of the single engine plus if you played the mission from the beginning and looked behind you, you would notice a modern looking SAW MG leaning against crates
Yup. Those look like either twin huey or the later model the Viper. Though with the 4 blades im thinking they are based on Vipers. Could also be a response from the whole humvee law suite.
The one game that I can think of that did the magazine capacity/replenish right was SOCOM US Navy SEALs back on the ps2. After reloading a number of times you would load a magazine at half capacity or near empty.
The game that does this right now is Insurgency Sand Storm. You also have the ability to salvage for mags that are compatible for the weapon you use but not necessarily the Ammunition.
I was surprised to learn that Camp Haskins and Firebase Ripcord are actually real places, Treyarch clearly put more effort into this game than Vanguard
Same I heard it some days before watching the video. Compared to vanguard this is on another level. To be like vanguard the vietcong should have had American weapons, the Americans should have had modern weapons and all 3 had to be of different nationalities than American
Honestly I would rather play the scenario you created at the end then the one in the game itself would be awesome to see you create more realistic scenarios like you did at the end.
Just discovered your content, and I enjoy it, thank you. Also, in the book Hunters and Shooters: An Oral History of the US Navy SEALS in Vietnam, one of the contributors talked about doing "snatch and grab" operations where they would drop from a helicopter onto, and through, the roofs of huts to grab prisoners.
I think the inaccuracies are a result of this mission being a fake memory being implanted into the player (us). We were never really in Vietnam and didn't know what some things looked like there, so the twin Huey was probably what the player assumed the Hueys looked like in Vietnam (Assuming the player had seen a twin huey before when it was made eventually), along with seeing weapons that were out of place and weren't even made yet.
UH-1 Helicopters during the Vietnam War were never meant to be used as an offensive vehicle as it is shown in this game. The main purpose of these aircraft were to move troops into areas where fixed-wing aircraft could not. It wasn't practical to drop paratroopers due to the high risk of "hung jumpers" which are paratroopers that had gotten stuck in trees in the thick jungle environment of Vietnam.
I think that one of the best Vietnam war games which actually feels like it's in Vietnam and not like that exact scenario could be anywhere (for example if you just replaced the signs and soldiers in the mission you reacted to, it could be pretty much any town in tropical forest, there is nothing in particular which actually makes it feel like Vietnam war. No crawling through VC tunnels, no going knees deep in mud, nothing like that) would be Vietcong. Although you may find lots of racism against VC in the game, it is pretty realistic. I mean, the American soldiers who were going to Vietnam weren't exactly saints, and racism was much more common then than it is today. So yeah, it may offend people. And of course, being portrayed from American perspective, it is the typical South good North bad type of stuff, and unfortunately it doesn't really show Americans in bad light, but I doubt a mission where you burn down a village and then kill all of their inhabitants, making excuse because they were hiding VC or something like that would be a fun mission. But apart from that, the atmosphere is really good, even though the graphics are.. well, as good as they could be 2 decades back or whenever it came out. The guns handle spectacularly well for a game of that age, and the missions are really nice, especially the parts where you crawl through multiple story maze like bunkers which are full of traps, prepared to catch unsuspecting American. Even in the very first mission you can die in a matter of seconds, should you not be careful, thankfully, the game uses a squad system which works really well. There are many roles, but one of the most important one would be a scout. (I am not sure if it's called scout but I'd assume so, I'm not native) Basically, the guy which walks in front of you the whole time and warns you if there is any traps at all. I prefer to take the game slow and let him clear the way in front of me from traps, because most of the time, you won't see it. And it's not just tripwire traps which aren't as hard to see, but it's fake floor traps as well, however if you are really observant you can notice Vietcong is (as they did in real life) placing signs around, warning other VC that there is a trap there. The signs are usually well hidden and are just a couple branches or leaves put in specific way, but if you know what to look for, you can know there is a trap around you without even seeing it first.
Another one you didnt points out, the kind of architecture of this village has is the old type of brick houses you would find in old city like Hue and Hoi An, not in middle of the jungle.
,,There's something I didn't expect IS the intense exposure to Stepen Wolf's Magic Carpet... It was even worse than the exposure to Fortunate Son.... The twin-engine variant of the UH-1 Huey, the UH-1N, was first flown in 1969. The UH-1s in this mission are all twin-engine models. Also, during the helicopter section about halfway through the level, the calibers of all the helo's weapons are wrong. The miniguns are 7.62mm M134s and the rockets are 70mm Hydras. Oh yeah, and there's also a Stoner 63 LMG in this mission. Not that important, I just appreciated the inclusion of a less well-known Vietnam War weapon.
Spoiler warning! If i remember correctly, in the game story, this mission is just implanted memory from someone else? I feel like they can get away with some inaccuracies here since it would make sense story wise

I feel like a story (game) that is written during a specific time period doesn't have to be historically accurate (entirely), UNLESS you write a segment that includes a true, real life event, it's quite exciting to see a little bit of creative twist written into a time period, because when you write characters during that certain setting, you may resort into designing your own events to create plots even if it doesn't exist. What I will say, is when creating that decision, it is important to remind yourself that when writing that specific segment, the equipment or music - settings and technology must relate to and remain accurate to that decade you're writing in, AND it's important to include real life circumstances/themes that relate, because you're; trying to portray that event, historical stories are okay to have fiction written into it as long as you state that the story isn't entirely accurate in terms of non fiction, historical-wise; and, that some parts may not of exist in history it's self, and is created purely for fictional use. Anyways, that's my opinion.
