The second offer was for Lewis to refuse the WBC title, have an interim fight in the United States for $2.5 million, and then fight Bowe for $9 million or a percentage to be negotiated. Frank Maloney, the manager of Lewis, rejected both offers and countered with his own proposal: a 75-25 percent split of the purse. If the gross after a Bowe-Lewis fight was the same as for Bowe-Holyfield, $25.5 million, Maloney said Bowe would earn $17 million and Lewis $5.5 million. Newman of some unknown reason turned it down. Maloney later had a change of heart and agreed to accept the first offer in order to get Lewis the fight he really wanted. But Newman told him he was too late (!). Newman said a deal for Bowe to defend the title against an opponent other than Lewis was imminent (witch would become the low risk and non-interesting choice of ex WBA title holder Michael Dokes, who had drug problems and had not won any meaningfull fight in many years). On December 14, 1992, Riddick Bowe held a news conference and dumped his WBC world title into a garbage can. "If Lewis wants the belt, he has to get it out of the garbage," Bowe said. The WBC then declared Lennox Lewis the new WBC heavyweight champion of the world. Lewis was the first British-born boxer to win a world heavyweight title since Bob Fitzsimmons in 1897.
Lennox Lewis showed the whole world how great of a champion he was going to be by knocking out one of the top super hard punching heavy weight razor ruddock
He should have avoided that counter by Oliver McCall. Because of it, he spent the next 4 years known as “that Canadian guy who got knocked out by Mike Tyson’s mentally unstable sparring partner”. There was no money in fighting that guy. Lennox wasn’t even a draw in England. The brits loved frank bruno more (by a *massive* margin) and it took Lewis knocking Bruno out for him to start getting traction. Prior to that he couldn’t fill up the arenas in his “own” country. Sad.
There's only one american that really knew how dangerous Lewis was by being smart, knew he was a puncher and enjoyed his fights as commentator: Big George. He gave to Lennox all the credits.
JRC yeah, after the Tyson right he named him the GOAT which I believe is accurate. I don’t think there was ever a heavyweight that would win more than 4 bouts in a 10 bout series with Lewis and that’s how I approach the assessment of who’s the GOAT.
@Your Neighbor You may know more than I did about who was willing to fight who back then but I recall that during broadcasts and the print media during that time (newspapers, Ring, Ko magazines, etc.) Big George expressed a healthy dose of respect for Lewis. Using the luxury of hindsight to see how Foreman faired against other top tier fighters (go back and watch a small Moorer beat George to the punch every round until the KO) Lewis would have been an extraordinary bad fight for him to take.
I remember Bowe asking George when he was gonna stop ducking him and George said never lol He was lovable with his honesty. I believe it was after Bowe destroyed Gonzalez
I really think Ruddock was spent after those two back-to-back wars with Tyson. Had he fought Lewis first instead of Tyson, who knows what would’ve been the outcome?
Ruddock was never the favorite over Holyfield. He was favored to beat Lewis going in though and seen as a very dangerous fighter. Lewis and Bowe were still unknowns before this and the Holyfield -Bowe fight. They had not really fought any top fighters yet.
Lewis was the guy none of them wanted to fight including Tyson and Holyfield. How could anyone suggest he was boring when he had so many KO's to his credit? He lost a couple of fights to lesser guys by getting careless but beat them in the returns. He is certainly a candidate for the best ever heavyweight.
Really he beat a washed Oliver McCall who was in tears in his corner during his 1997 rematch against Lennox Lewis in Las Vegas. The referee stopped the fight in the fifth round and awarded Lewis the win after McCall refused to throw any punches. McCall's second fight with Lewis was an absolute joke. He should’ve rematches him but didn’t and did the same with Hashim Rahman
@@johnulmerRacing look at his record he only had 2 fights with both. He should have had a 3rd why because when Lewis lost to both men he demanded a rematch. But when he regained the belt he refused to offer the chance for McCall or Rahman to take it back and there is something in boxing called a rubber. He chose to run away because he knew it was a lucky right hand that floored Rahman and he got an easy time with McCall and he thought it’s better to take it now than fight him again. Because if McCall was 100% mentally & physically for a fight with Lewis he would be at the other end of a knockout in 1st or 2nd Round. Lewis is a coward simple as that
Ahaha big george- "if he keep his feet on the ground he can become even more than that, he can become a well-spoken young man from a good family'' haha oh mate.
McCall was a good fighter who sparred with many top heavies and was well respected. Drugs killed his career, but he KO'd Lewis on his best night. Nobody takes that from him.
The McCall fight was stopped too fast. Lewis was hurt but not out and could have rallied given the chance. McCall was a very tough fighter, but Lennox had superior boxing skill.
Evander cheated on all his women and abandoned all his children. While yammering about God. That’s why he can’t speak any more. He deserves it for being such a “class man”. Cretin.
I watch his fight with JC Chavez a couple times a year (even more than that last year) and am always amazed at his talent and grit. People forget that he ko'd Buddy Mcgirt to win a title! He was a special fighter and it was tough to watch how this ended.
Ruddock was so overrated after the Tyson fights. Obviously he was difficult for that Tyson, and yes he had the power. But you would need more skills to beat Lewis. Ruddock hardly used the jab and always seeked to land the big left hook or uppercut. He was wide open, and quite predictable.
Yeah man he was a shot fighter. His chin was brutal I mean Morrison was on queer street and ended up knocking him out. I think when you have as much power as he did you kinda take a little bit of a hit in the chin area. Tyson was actually an exception to the rule he took a great punch.
@@jrayner21679 Foreman had a great chin, as did Ernie Shavers. But I kind of see what you mean. Like the more power they have, the more they take risks and leave their chins exposed to get hit hard. Or along those lines.
@@Bobby.2000 Yup. Foreman had a great chin. The only time he was knocked out it had more to do with being exhausted from trying to kill Ali. Shavers chin was suspect though, especially towards the end. He was so feared as a puncher that guys would pull their punches, not open up because it meant being in range to get clocked. He had the chin of a toddler though. I just looked up his record and he was KO'd by average heavyweight punchers. From September 79' -August of 80" he was KO'd (TKO) 3 out of 4 fights and Lyle TKO'd him in 1975.

@@brettviddal1593 None of the top fighters? Are you kidding me? Tell that Oliver McCall, Frank Bruno or Ray Mercer. Ray Mercer took Lewis' best shots and walked through them beat Lewis' ass in their fight. Yes, Ray Mercer was really afraid of Lewis.
@@charleslowe522 I said "top" fighters. Lewis vs Ruddock was a title eliminator. I'm talking earlier when Tyson, Holyfield and Bowe were considered the "top" heavyweights. Bowe dumped the WBC belt so he didn't have to fight him. Don King paid $4M so Tyson didn't have to fight him and then avoided Lewis as long as possible when Holyfield held belts. McCall only ever won a belt once. The early stoppage against Lewis. All Mercer ever had was the WBO belt and was never really considered a "top" heavyweight. He should have been but was not in the conversation with Tyson, Holyfield and Bowe. BTW I never said Ruddock vs Lewis was on the undercard. Lewis vs Biggs was on the undercard of Holyfield vs Cooper. Lewis would have smoked Holyfield and won the WBA and IBF belts had he fought him that night instead of Cooper. That was in 1991. He got the title eliminator against Ruddock in 92. After being given the WBC belt Bowe threw in the trash can in 92 it was a full 7 years before he was given a shot at the WBA and IBF belts. 7 years of being ducked by those belt holders.
You can't question Ruddocks heart, if he has anything left he always gets up. I have a few notes to pick up on though... 1) when he lands a good shot he stops and admires 2) Great heart but always on wobbly legs after a clean blow 3) Has a good jab but doesn’t use it enough. 4) Terrific hybrid uppercut/hook but an overeliance on it.
lol everyone is wobbly after a clean blow from Lewis. Ruddock had a good chin and showed it against Tyson, Tyson never had him even close to this hurt in 19 rounds. Lewis's size, length and polish give his power a different dimension that Tysons. Lewis just wasn't a natural head hunter like Mike, he was a boxer. Good points though.
Sad how athletes aren't appreciated til after they're retired. Lewis whole career people complained he was boring, blah blah blah. He was dominant not boring and the best heavyweight I ever saw in his prime. Sorry but David Haye just isn't Lennox Lewis.
He did this to Andrew Golota and Rahman in the rematch plus a few other big fights. They were expected to good good tests and Lewis just destroyed them.

Ruddock’s problem was that he had a shitty foundation. No jab, kept his chin up, had his hands out, and was caught off-balance often. He also never had good defense or a good right hand. If he had built a very strong foundation in order to deliver perfect power shots, he would’ve been world champion, and probably would’ve beaten Tyson.
Best "W" of Lewis career & I have to give him his just dos in Lennox taking on Razor, But Razors got cut himself an thought? By going some rounds with a declining Mike...Couldn't be touched, Well that was pretty much evident in this fight. Not going to take anything away from Lewis...Razor didn't have a plan A or B like George indicated there was flaus that I noticed in the first Tyson fight were Razor positions his head down while jabbing he got away with it then, That's because of Tyson not being as tall as Lewis he didn't capitalise on this But Lewis with his height did with the 1-2...This started the rot for Mr Razor...Lewis used his Gillettes Sensors on him...
Another point i wanted to raise was? The punches that lewis through on Ruddock were homed in the right places that played a significate factor, He wasn't a specialist for one punch knockout, But like i said he caught him presisely in the right place at the right time.
@@AsifIqbal-kr7mk What made Lewis devastating was his combination of speed, power and accuracy with that long reach. He was the most accurate puncher of his era. Some guys have a talent of pinpointing their punches. Lewis has this in spades. Lennox was a patient boxer though that liked to take his time.
Course nobody mentions the one common sense problem with Taylor. The only time a guy 5 foot 6 inches tall belongs in the 147 pounds division is if he's a heavy puncher. A light fisted boxer has no reason to be there. Bad management team, they should have had Taylor in the junior lightweight or lightweight division
@@serhandayi It was an unbelievably stupid reach to put him in there with Norris who was essential a middleweight and arguably the best PforP fighter in the world at the time. Meldrick could have stayed a dominate Welterweight champion for several years. Meldrick looked good in those fights inbetween Chavez and Taylor. He was never the same after that brutal KO by Taylor.
Pernell Whitaker was 5'7, 147 lbs, and didn't have heavy hands and he did just fine "beating" Chavez and being the Lineal/WBC Welterweight Champ and even became the WBA Super Welterweight Champ. As for Taylor, he didn't want to cut weight to make 140 anymore and decided for his managers that he was going to 147 and decided on a money fight with Terry Norris at 150 that he had no business going for. As much as I hate to admit it, he did it to himself and the Norris fight truly doomed his career. It's hard to say Chavez killed it when he goes up a weight and wins a belt.

Razor ruddock had the punching power to be the champ he jst had to be patient and fight his fight instead of throwing wide shorts and desperately trying to knock him down early
@Delete Your Face! That is my take as well. Ruddock was not a bum or a shot fighter, Lewis just KO's him in spectacular fashion. Ruddock was dangerous but sloppy so Lewis was a bad matchup for him.

Bowe could’ve been an all time great if it wasn’t for two people one Rock Newman pimping Bowe in that world tour instead of getting back in the ring and fighting the Lewis vs Ruddock winner to me Bowe could’ve beaten Ruddock pretty easily. Lewis would’ve been much harder but a motivated Bowe would beat an often inconsistent Lewis without emmanuel Stewart with him at trainer there’s no chance. Stewart knew exactly how to push Lewis buttons before then I believe Bowe had a chance at about a 60/40 chance. The second was his style at 6’5 Bowe should’ve been fighting outside using that awesome left jab.
@@greenfields1221Bowe was also beaten in the amateurs by Jorge Luis Gonzalez, so by your logic Bowe couldn't maul Gonzalez in the pros by 5 (which he did). After that, Bowe loses his edge and Lewis dumps Correa for Emanuel Steward and becomes the near unstoppable juggernaut he became.
@@greenfields1221 All of this pontification falls apart when Oliver McCall flattens Lennox Lewis in the pros to such a degree he needs the ref to hold him up. Lennox Lewis showed the whole world how great of a champion he was going to be by knocking out one of the top super hard punching heavy weight razor ruddock
start of round 2 , 'George how will that knockdown change the fight', 'not at all' , 5 seconds later hes knocked down again !
Ruddock was finished after the 2 fights with mike tyson he got seriously hurt in them fights he was never the same
Tales from the ring. LMAO bring this back!
Lennox went from being "Who dat?" to the most avoided fighter on the planet in the span of just 4 minutes.
Riddick sure went running. Shame.
Foreman also wanted nothing to do with Lewis (or Bowe if I recall correctly). He knew.
Young Foreman vs Lewis would have been awesome
I have to confess that i never rated Lewis very high but you have recognized that he ended up showing us how humble and good he was.
Humble? He was never Humble. But,he was a great heavyweight. Top 12 all time.
I really think Ruddock was spent after those two back-to-back wars with Tyson. Had he fought Lewis first instead of Tyson, who knows what would’ve been the outcome?
He would have knocked out lewis before Tyson
@@theinformationbomber7102if you can’t take the punishment you were never a fighter. Holyfield and Bowe fought 3 times. Ali and Frazier 3 times.
Funny how Ruddock was the favorite to win the tournament against 3 fighters who would go on to have HOF careers
Ruddock was never the favorite over Holyfield. He was favored to beat Lewis going in though and seen as a very dangerous fighter. Lewis and Bowe were still unknowns before this and the Holyfield -Bowe fight. They had not really fought any top fighters yet.
Notice the TH-cam fight advertisement, two headstones but razor Ruddock had a skeleton behind his head stone.
@@clevelandwilliams5922 you're going to have to clear up that last sentence, if you want us to know what you are talking about.
@@johnulmerRacing that was a typo Lewis was stopped in 2nd & Oliver McCall was stopped because he had mental and emotional issues
@@clevelandwilliams5922 is your last sentence trying to say that he should have had third fights with McCall and Rahman?

So when Lennox beat Ruddock like this, it was considered as good performance, but when Mccall beat Lennox in 2 round , it was considered as luck?
One of the weirdest comments I've read....those fights aren't comparible in anyway possible besides the round it ended in
McCall was a good fighter who sparred with many top heavies and was well respected. Drugs killed his career, but he KO'd Lewis on his best night. Nobody takes that from him.
I always thought the McCall fight was a premature stoppage
Mccall used to spar Mike Tyson!
The McCall fight was stopped too fast. Lewis was hurt but not out and could have rallied given the chance. McCall was a very tough fighter, but Lennox had superior boxing skill.

He was allready in brutal wars before he fought lewis but yeah u can see ruddock is not steady from the start but ruddock got whooped
Yeah man he was a shot fighter. His chin was brutal I mean Morrison was on queer street and ended up knocking him out. I think when you have as much power as he did you kinda take a little bit of a hit in the chin area. Tyson was actually an exception to the rule he took a great punch.
Ruddock gave Tyson a lot of problems. He was no match for Lewis.

Damn Lewis vs Ruddock was an undercard fight
Nope. It was actually the main event. The Taylor-Espana fight was taped beforehand and shown afterwards. Not sure why it was done that way.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. They kept Lewis on undercards for years. None of the "top" fighters wanted anything to do with Lewis.
@@brettviddal1593 Bullshit, Lewis was not on the undercard. Lewis vs Ruddock was the main event. Again this fight was tape delayed. No one was watching this telecast to see Taylor was Espana except for hardcore fans like myself.
1) when he lands a good shot he stops and admires
2) Great heart but always on wobbly legs after a clean blow
3) Has a good jab but doesn’t use it enough.
4) Terrific hybrid uppercut/hook but an overeliance on it.
100%
lol everyone is wobbly after a clean blow from Lewis.
Lennox looked spectacular here.
He did this to Andrew Golota and Rahman in the rematch plus a few other big fights. They were expected to good good tests and Lewis just destroyed them.
I do agree lewis did hit hard but his punching power was underated by people

This fight was disappointing on ruddocks part ruddock should've stuck to slugging instead of tryna bounce on his toes
I actually can't believe he got up.
I'd say Lewis' wins over Holyfield were bigger than this, but this was one of Lewis' best showings.
1:52:52 - I would have thought John Kassir would have gotten a more proper credit than "Special Thanks".
They ruined Meldrick Taylor following the Chavez fight. He never had any business in the ring with Terry Norris.
@@ExperienceEric Understatement
