    Pablo's mind and Simon Servida's experience in music production is crazy as you said. I'm learning a lot in your reactions and it made me appreciate the song more, also in this song, they've been sooo hands on in everything, if you have time they have the "the behind the scenes" series on how they made this output.

Also, when you mentioned KZ myLabs as your first golden playlist artist, I remember that, high five 🙋🏻 KZ actually performed "that" song that shouldn't be named (according to you) w/ them as guests in her concert 😜

    As I was listening to you talk about the beat shifts, the many transitions, the different instruments being put together in ways that should clash but didn't, I got to thinking that Pablo was very deliberate in his choices in making a "disjointed" piece that somehow could still be "cohesive". As he always does, he incorporated his and the group's life experiences into the composition. (He often says that he only gets to express himself fully by writing music.)
    To me, this unsettling pattern represents many things, one of which is how they as a group are very different from each other, and yet they learned to gel through all the years of training and performing (by this time - 2021 - three of them would have been together for 5 years). They didn't do this by towing under his "leadership" - in fact, as their leader, he has allowed each to flourish in their own way, at their own pace, with zero attempts at dictatorship or one-upmanship.
    What? also seems to show that although their voices are so distinct from one another... together they work, especially when Pablo arranges their 5-part harmonies or when he is able to write songs that seamlessly shift from rapping to EDM to melodies based on the 5 boys' strengths. What seems to be an impossibility turns into magic.
    In What?, the farmer, the businessman and the rulers live separate lives as they often do in a society (in this case, the Philippine society)... and yet together they should try to work things out for the good of society. This is part of the message being conveyed. Basically, that whatever one does one must do excellently... without stepping or looking down on other people... so as to come together cohesively and to co-exist in relative harmony.
    I perfectly understand when you say you only look at structure and pattern, rhythm and schematic perspectives... that's how you are built and it seems to be a very cerebral way of approaching music, and the fact that songs you react to aren't in a language you understand. Mad respect for this! Many of us, however, don't have this kind of technical knowledge, so I very much appreciate your take on songs because it adds to the way I dissect songs (which is usually based on lyrics and meanings and the like.)
    Apologies for this long comment, but I thought this was a safe forum to express a "counter-reaction" (bad pun! lol) and to try to put two very different trains of thought together. Looking forward to another SB19 reaction in future.

    • @counterreaction
      @counterreaction  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is part of why I chose the name 😅 so thank you for playing along.
      But yes the deliberate decisions made throughout production is what made this song cohesive enough to still be palatable. He did a tremendous job, and I applaud him and the rest of the guys.
      KZ’s song that broke me was not in English either, emotion is universal and when its included in music, its felt. Its understood, especially with her level of execution and technique. Its amazing when sweet words hit in the right pitch, sure, but word being sang isn’t as important to me as the execution while singing it. Maybe thats just me but I do get a high level of satisfaction from it.
      As a songwriter lyrics are very important to me, but In the R&B and Hip Hop realm I’ve studied for so long, theres nothing from any other genre that can be more impactful as far as poeticism is concerned. The use of vocabulary is best displayed in Hip Hop as words are creatively used in various patterns whilst rhyming. So when it comes to other genres, I think understanding the sentiments of the song is sufficient, but I cannot pause for a cute or sweet line or two when they are just rephrased versions of something I’ve already heard before. Not to say they were stolen though, I hope this all makes sense. Lol
      I have to get back to work, but thank you for your comment ❤️

    I'm the 1000th like on this video :D Anyway, thanks for reacting to this! As others have pointed out, this is a sort of anthem. In the interviews and the making, the guys said this was the music, the song, that represented SB19 - the them that they wanted for themselves, not the one their former company wanted them to be. All of the 5 guys really put their heart and soul and talents into this song and production, together with the rest of the amazing crew.

    What? is a gamechanger not just for SB19 but for the whole PPop community. They were the first who released this kind of MV and we welcomed it with open arms. They fought so hard for this, especially Pablo. Before, his songwriting skills weren't even credited, until A'Tin demanded that he be acknowledged. What? got a whopping 1.7M views within 24 hrs of its release.
    Stell, as the main choreographer, thought of how the choreography will be executed, with the help of Ken and Tank Bautista.
    Justin, as the Creative Director, put all his heart and mind into this concept.
    Josh delivered the most iconic rap lines in PPop history

    Yes Justin was the creative mind behind the MV. It was meant to be epic and slightly disjointed by designed. The song is about self Impowerment and raising your own flag. There is an entire series of 'Making" videos that highlights how they created the MV. If your really interested, Simon Servida, a Filipino producer from Canada co-produced the entire Pagsibol EP. He has a series videos on how he collaborated directly with Pablo to produce all of the songs. It's very detailed and he admits that he usually doesn't ad more to a production but Pablo likes more! Check it out. I believe one video is dedicated to just WHAT.

I loved it! 🥰🥰 I've been watching your SB19 reaction videos, and I just want to say as an (A'TIN- SB19 fan) ATIN is the Tagalog of the word OURS and is pronounced as number eighteen, I love SB19 because aside from the fact that they're my fellow countrymen, they're also a bunch of nice and intelligent people. 🥰🥰They're the CEOs of their company and Pablo as the leader and the one who makes songs for their group does not limit their group's talent and wants them to evolve, that's why he gives parts of the songs to each member who doesn't really sing. Some of them didn't even sing before they became SB19. As an A'TIN, I really appreciate that. 🥰🥰You noticed that in your previous reaction, there were members who did not stand out singing live in a ballad, it's because of that reason. ☺☺They sound that way and that is what makes them different from KPOP or Korean pop. Some people say they imitate K-pop since they were trained under a Korean agency before. I'm looking forward to more reaction videos of them. Thank you for your honest reaction. I really appreciate it. ☺☺

    Hey bro the dude that produced the music explained how he did it in one of his videos. His name is Simon Servida. Oh as i was typing this i see someone mentioning it already. Anyways, there's another producer dude that i followed that i got him to start reacting to Mori back when i started finding about them too. Anyways he's pretty technical himself, but the great thing with him (although he hasn't been reacting anymore and working on himself) is that he interview a lot of the artists. He got in touch with Simon Servida and he's got an hour interview with him. Jacob Restituto is the dude's name and the video on youtube is called "Interviewing Simon Servida | Producing a #1 Song with SB 19, Recording Tips, & More"

      I actually watched simons video this morning while enjoying my coffee. It was dope that he was even a bit critical of the requests as well as the project in some capacity, yet despite that, the song was successful. I think he was the right person for the job and Pablo was smart enough to identify that. Really really close to being a no lister at some junctures but yeah, some of the highlights were just too good to refute. Although I do my best to remain humble but my ego got a little boost watching that video 😆😆😆

      yeah that song trips a lot of people cause of the tempo and changes that it doesn't really fit the regular formula that everyone's accustomed to. yeah it had a lot of breaks, and it was pretty long. i didn't like the breaks at first but then it got better every time i listened to it. but yeah i like how they're not afraid of experimenting. because if you're always following the formula that people are used to, then because you're not willing to risk it then you wont know what you might have achieved. pretty sure they learned a lot from that as we're able to see how much they've evolved. @@counterreaction

    The criticisms you had on some of the artists you react to are not ill-intentioned that's why viewers don't hate on you. There's a few reactors EZ and SB19 fans boycotted because their critique was outright disrespect/hateful and not related to the song or performance at all, or even a matter of preference. One called Pablo ugly/hard on the eyes. Another called EZ trash, not the song but EZ himself. For What? the concept is about being yourself (individuality) which explains the somewhat disjointedness of the song, like listening to 5 different songs merged in one. The beat was produce by Simon Servida, a Filipino-Canadian beatmaker/producer with Pablo. There is a behind the scene of him working with Pablo making the production. As for the PR thing, SB19 have always veen giving back to the fans even when they weren't famous yet but we don't expect casuals to know about it. Sorry for the long comment hahaha.

    Hmmm… since you brought up that PR thing again in the SB19 WishBus perf of Liham, lemme just say my two-cents too. I like that you like projecting you’re honest (you keep reiterating you are in your RVs) and I take it you won’t take it the wrong way too if people react to your reactions, especially if they deem it quite off when you say something conclusively about something you actually do not know the long and short of (as in that “PR” thing in the WishBus you so claimed). You keep saying you only got misconstrued but what was in your comment that was misconstrued? You clearly said you were sure somebody told the boys to wave or smile because it was good for sales and PR. And you never said sorry for saying it, even if you claim in this RV that you did watch (maybe after you got sort of a barrage of disgruntled comments) some clips of the boys actually interacting with fans at random places like the airport. It’s one thing to be honest with criticisms, especially if they come with the intention of wanting the one being critiqued to improve; it’s another thing when one critiques to come across as too high up there to be easily pleased, or just wants to be cocky and all to sound in-the-know. That said, I hope you keep on reacting to SB19 and the others because you do have sound comments every so often, albeit you strike me as someone too much concerned about “sounding” honest you oversee facts.

Sorry, I don’t have the time to look for that particular RV now but hey, thanks for the time it took you to read this. It may seem kinda all over the place on the first listen. But like Bohemian rhapsody, WHAT is broken into sections because of the theme of the song. Each member has a section where they can raise their individual flag (show their individuality and own story). If you break down the lyrics, you will find a deeper meaning to the song. That iron maiden is a reference to Josh's traumatic physical abuse from a nanny when he was a child.
    It is a battle cry. A war that uses bars and melodies instead of bullets.
    This song also doesn't follow the traditional structure of a song and yet it worked out really good. 😊

    Your reaction does seem honest, too bad though, you lose the essence of the song by refusing to understand the lyrics even if cc is already provided. But that is okay, to each his own choices and playlist. Sometimes, some reactors are trapped by a mindset..exactly the sentiment conveyed by the part of this song Josh sung:
    '20-20 basag ang lente'..one may have the 20-20 vision but still the lens of understanding is broken or lacking.
    Anyways, our SB19 has proven their mettle already, their music and production has been evolving and improving and the best part they remain humble and close to their fans.
    In our current jaded world, humility is so overlooked, so oftentimes perceived poorly by others.

    • @counterreaction
      @counterreaction  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is honest, I can promise you that.
      There is no other form of music that utilizes vocabulary in any language like Hip Hop does. As a result of listening, writing, and studying it for decades, there is not much I cannot comprehend as it pertains to poetry and its impact on the listener. As a songwriter you would think lyrics would be extremely important to me, enough to break down. They are, however its all about execution for me. Reading it doesn’t do anything for me. Like the lyric you referenced, its something you would see from an insightful meme, and I’m sure it exists. It’s a bit philosophical. But I want to hear how it translates to song form, how it rhymes, how its delivered. It difficult to do that when its in a different language. Now emotion! Thats universal as is music to a degree, but when you see my KZ reaction. You might understand what I appreciate the most as it pertains to composition while not understanding the language.
      I know I don’t have to explain myself but the ez mil video is processing so i had a few seconds to spare lol
      I do think that because there is a lack of humility we also want to believe it still exists anytime it’s presented in a small capacity regardless of intent or past examples of it being displayed. Its something people cling to and wont let go of no matter whats presented in front of them and to me that is what is even more sad.

    • @poltes5
      @poltes5 ปีที่แล้ว

      SB19 makes music to convey their experiences as they pursue their careers, the richness of Philippine music and its culture. That is why I can say, sadly, though you do make honest reactions, right now it is still honestly lacking in understanding what the song was all about.
      Humility is a very strong aspect of our Filipino culture, so it is never sad for us to display it or recognize it. Anyways, music as an art form, touches people in different ways. Some may just settle on the superficial aspects, but many do dig in to the deeper message of the song itself. In time you will level up a bit more as you get used to SB19 songs or to other Philippine artists and their performances. Everything is a learning curve. Some start that way, then later on become their most avid supporter in time.
