If they mix lime into the cob, it will help with the mold. They can source the lime from the shells they were using for the insulation, it just needs to be powdered, and then heated. You can make a box and use a tamper to powder them, heat to 900C, burning off the calcium. then mix it in with the cob, and finally make a white wash with the lime for the exterior.
I personally wouldn't build my house from tyres. I don't think it's a healthy material at all :-( The taxi companies should pay you for this illegal garbage and you would have money for some better material. But I know, life isn't so easy. Well, good luck!

I love Earthships - I went and visited them in Taos NM when I lived in Santa Fe. They are beautiful and practical. I love that they are set up to catch water, and grow your own food inside away from chemicals,, recycle the water several times and in extreme hot or cold stay pretty steady. It was an ordeal for them to begin building them with permits and the town's people. And they won and have some wonderful homes. So happy for you folks. Many Blessings.
How awesome are the parents for gifting that wonderful piece of land, for enabling the couple to follow their dream. How cool that so many like minded people from all over this crazy world were willing and able to offer their services and enthusiasm for someone elses dream. You have to remember that the people working there we're doing an internship. I can't believe negative people out there. Yes oh, they were blessed to have parents that gave them land. I didn't see them ever sitting back on their laurels watching everybody do the work for them. These people worked hard just as everyone else did. This home has much Blood Sweat and Tears pour it into it. It is absolutely stunning and I pray that they continue to have good luck that mold will not set in. What an absolute gift they're giving to their children that they should experience a childhood living in a home such as this one.
I don't begrudge people that have dreams, are appreciative of everyone and everything around them, find uses for man's excessive trash, find people who can afford to pay to travel, learn, share unique experiences, trust in their own power, the power of others, mankind for a higher/ larger goal to honor the earth so it can sustain itself, life in all forms and honor our creator with the same love and consideration that was given every element of our universe. Now if we could only recycle trash talk for housing, affordability, dignity and room for all we might actually get to enjoy more of what family is intended to be. Heaven help us...
I smiled for 45 minutes, it's inspiring, the house, the design, the attitude. But most importantly the beautiful people, doing the right thing for the right reasons. That is how to build a proper home.
It comes with people who have a strong sense of adventure and the willingness to pay for hands on education. It's a bit of a sacrifice but you have learned skills and developed friendships with like minded people. It's a plus all the way around.
@@freedomforever1962 Yeah, but 2000$ is a rip-off. Which is the exact opposite of "friendship". I know of these get-togethers, where a group of people together build a cob-house. They contribute a bit to accommodation and food, so the house-owner does not have to pay for everything out of his own pocket. But it's never more than 200$. THAT is a real learning experience. 2000$ is exploiting these people, because their food or accommodation costs way less.

An incredible house. It was great watching it being built. The people who came to work for the summer are the real "heroes " of this project. They really put their best foot forward and worked very hard.
The best was when he stated at the end that they we need more people like the "couple" in this world. I guess that means we need less people like the host...
That always bothered me about grand designs! All the hosts do it, whether in the UK, OZ or where ever. It's part of the show methodology I guess. My wife would then tell me to shut up about it. But yes, it is non stop, failure is around the corner!

Was really impressed with the house, and their intentions Gifted land : not their fault if their parents want to help. Asking people to pay to build the house : in a way encouraging other people and providing platform to learn sustainability. Involving school kids to play a part in building the house : kids getting to learn about environment along with free labour. But then you list it on AirBnB for 700 dollars a night. It was just another money harvesting project with sustainability packaging.
Well they may also live in the home when they rent it, I'm guessing its pretty hard to make a decent living in this small remote town they live in, not much industry and NZ is not known for high paying jobs. Maybe they have to stay with Sarah's Mum and Dad with their family for a week at a time while it's rented to afford to live there, you don't know.

This is the most beautiful Earthship, I have ever seen. I am in love with the concept for natural and off grid living, but not the usual look of the finished homes. I love the way they built it into the hill and blended everything into the landscape.

this is the best kind of labor...watching on a video and living vicariously through it all the while saying "I would like to do it"...well guess what? I just did it.
Soooo let me get this straight: They live on her parents land in a house owned by her parents, while saving up for their own house. Their new house is going to be built on lands she got for free from her parents. They've saved up 320.000 dollars for their new home. They get people from all over the world to come help them with their project. Each helping hand has to pay 2.000 dollars for the experience. Now dont get me wrong here - the house is fucking awesome - but under these conditions even a moron with 10 thumbs like myself could manage to get this build.
If I understood correctly, the participants are more or less, paying for two months for their own food (for I guess caterers that are mentioned that supply food), with 2.000 NZ Dollars (that is 1.282 US Dollars) and experience is reward for their free hard work. That money devided by 60 days (8 weeks) is 21,3 US Dollars per day. I am not sure if that includes some kind of lodgings, but for that amount per day I do not see how that would be managed. Also as the owners have mentioned at the end, in return they also might go and help some of the participants when they build their own earth ship in the future... What I especially liked in the house concept, were a lot of light (including bottles that I did not expect to look that good) and the hallway with plants that can grow food all year round. The rest of self-sufficiency with water and elektricity also appeals to me. Not perhaps that crazy about natural materials I still find them OK, because they have some advantages like warmth from earth at winter, but the concept of the house is amazing.
Uh, sure, it wasn't just one of their many Tom Sawyer-esque schemes to convince rubes that they're doing them a favor to build their house. Lol, c'mon, the scene before was him lamenting that it's going to take him forever to do it himself. Incidentally, they're renting this out for over $700 a night on AirBnB, so I feel like it's pretty clear that, while not being con artists per se, they were able to finesse people into building them a cheap investment property that's insanely expensive. I would bet almost anything they just used traditional materials and building methods during the months the camera crew wasn't around. They made some pretty big compromises about what materials to use, like just putting in an aluminum roof with polystyrene, and throwing some potted plants underneath to make it look natural. If you think anyone there learned how to make a house for themselves, I've got a bridge to sell you. Actually, I've got an eco bridge that you can pay me to build, I've got a buyer lined up.
WOOOWW!! It turned out so gorgeous! I looooove the light shining through those glass bottles! And I was crying a little towards the end when the interns came back to help. That was awesome! A home build with love. And in the end it turned out beautiful! Well done!! The stuff of big dreams! Persistence and positivity pays off!
I absolutely love the build completed by this couple and all of their helpers ... I chose an old abandoned meeting hall , installed temporary glass , built a glass wall along one side and both ends of the building ... installed solar panels , and soon adding wind turbines ... all for less than 50 k , Canadian dollars ... soon the salvaged hardwood flooring / thousands of seeds almost ready for planting / all salvaged materials ... 2.5 years in and tons left to accomplish ... converting generators to run off of hydrogen from solar energy production ... my building started out as a 60 x 30 foot building / added a 22 foot glass sun room / added a 16 foot at the other end / added a 12 x 52 foot glass walled green house on the south side facing the sun / all in all its been a good experience , learning to be 100% off grid ... go for it people ... I love the fact of not having energy bills every month / eating home grown food / and still having all modern conveniences ... I do have to say that it's been a serious venture into determination ... but I do love having no alarm clocks ... buy your equipment from auction houses / make existing equipment function for more than its original purposes .. learn / adapt / live far less stressful lives ... I have lots more to do and state , but all in all , it's a great experience ... so many options for living this type of life style are available ...

I am working on my wife now as far as getting her out of the mindset that we must buy a house from the bank that 50 other families have lived in. Im of the opinion that if i buy the land i can build/create a one of a kind custom home for us & our two kids can expand off of ours as they age out of our dwelling. But its been a long 10 years we've been renting houses & apartments so i feel she is almost on board with me.

Yes ! I'm Very Patriotic & appreciate our Soldiers & military. But, we could be doing so much better w our young men & women POWER resources at home building sustainable homes for us older, disabled & low income folks. The Elders that ned help.
I was involved my whole life around soils, i can tell ya right now that is going to be a problem once the spores sprout they act as a natural wick for moisture, this area will need sprayed . And a very large area needs to have a curtain drain up behind the home and another moisture barrier installed on top and on the lower wall of the ditch and a collection pipe in the bottom with a barrier underneath the pipe. You need to have the pipe lower than the floor of the home. Preferably dig till you hit the imperiable layer where the tear firma begins. And pipe and drain to a daylighted area on both ends with exposed rodent proof caps. Good luck and keep a minfull eye on that wall always , molds can kill your investment in a very short period of time , i personaly would remove the organic mix you put on it and have it gunited with probably aquatic pool grout.
Wow the amount of negative cynical comments is amazing.... who cares if the land was free; work with what advantages you have. None of the workers were coerced into doing this, they all signed up for it for the experience. $2k for 2 months of free food and a place to stay isn't the worst deal. It was obviously still a very difficult and unique project despite the advantages of free land, subsidized labor, etc. Even building a normal house commonly has delays, issues due to weather, etc. I think it's an awesome project & hope the couple are fully enjoying their home. They will definitely have these memories (good and bad!) for a lifetime!

I live on vilage in Serbia. My friends and I, built house of 180m2 for 37.000 euros. -.- And I have big garden where I grow food, have my own well, I only use electricity from grid, and its like 10e per month. for next 45-50 years, I will pay 6000 euros for electricity. Food is free, water is free.
Good on them, they had a vision and regardless of the critics they followed their dream and were kind and open enough to allow strangers to come along for the journey. A lot of cynical people in the comments, that kind of attitude won't get you to where you want to be. Appreciate and be happy for your fellow man.
This man got his wife to work three jobs while he took a year off, her parents to let them stay in their house for free to save money, her parents to give them land for free, AND got people to pay him for the pleasure of building his house for him...
He did not get the money that went the Earthship company as other people have said. He was lucky though. Have you ever been in charge of building a house? Not in any way time off.
I feel like the husband is getting most of the credits for being "the dreamer and visioner" while he is actually profiting of his wife and her parents. She works three jobs, looks after the children and works on the buliding site in her free time. Still she feels guilty for not being on the building site the entire time! I am sorry but the husband seems a little self-involved, while being portrayed as optimistic, sensible and loving. In reality he is putting huge stress on his wife for his dream, neglecting her worries!
Exactly what I was thinking and even worse is that he's a gleeful pessimist. Seemed to take a little delight in anything that looked like it was going wrong. Even at the end when he should be wishing them the best, he was expressing his feelings of how something could still go wrong.

This video has inspired my thinking absolutely. My organization is working with a town in Ghana to build a Youth Community Center that will serve as an After-School activities center for the youths. This video of an Earthship and the entire team just inspired my thinking and I wish to know more about the technicalities so I can properly plan. Also looking for volunteers who will come along this journey to build an After-School center made from natural materials and recycled materials.
I..used to run a simple portable sawmill on a handmade track trailer.. and you could find a grove of Pines around there .. and custom saw them 😉..and a telescopic forklift would accomplish the same thing.. as the crane.. & Again .. it’s just a different way of doing the same thing .. and y’all did an amazing job!! I’m not criticizing..- I’m just adding comments....(Wonderfully done!& the video presentation ... absolutely awesome!..as well )... phenomenal job..everyone!
In the year 2000 I was supervisor over 39 homes:- in nine months .. and the biggest problem with doing homes fast .. is that you have to get rid of all the drying moisture there is hundreds of gallons of water just stuck in the air.. moisture from mortar .. drywall ..paint ..They become an envelope of moisture .. so you have to remove it .. or in this case.. modern cob ! so therefore you must have ..window air conditioners, fans.. and tarps.. and you dry that stuff out ! The sales would’ve worked well for the tarps! ..if using air conditioners ..and box fans ..the lights are not needed .. You see.. if you’re just blowing air at it ..and dehumidifying that air ... That is the giant solution to the moisture problem.. & i saw a picture of the landscape around the house ..and it was almost foggy..100% humidity ..and it will dry out ...slow.. As you encountered .. you did a wonderful job .. amazing results..!
I can't help to feel a bit envious. When I lost my parents at 18 all I was left with was the debt of their funerals. I hope this family knows the blessing they have recieved from Sarah's parents. They seem like they are a beautiful couple, now with a beautiful home!
"It's a labor intensive process" ... The idea behind earthships is fandastic, but we need a more cost-efficient method if we are going to bring this concept to the general public.
Earth ships aren't meant to be ship up front. They are cheap in the long term. If you eliminate a water, electricity, and gas bill for 10 years, you're saving money. Not spending it. It is a large up front investment for savings in the long term. That's the idea anyway.
Andrew Sanders It wasn’t actually that expensive. Only $240,000 usd or £150,000 bps. That’s really cheap for a four bed. And they got people to pay to learn about how to build a house. The baby-boomers seem to forget that we have been trying to make as many as possible ideas to save the environment they ruined. And they call us lazy. (Soz that was a bit unrelated). Most of this you could make or get from a skip. You could do it by yourself but it would take longer.

Jack Mountain I agree it needs to be less labor intensive. I think of repurposing cargo containers and cover them with the mud. Might need to put a protective coat on it first to keep it from rusting.
Cadence James Andrew Sanders I'm a baby boomer and I totally agree with you. We should have always been doing what was best for the earth and the animals, including ourselves. I never liked the idea of making more & more buildings & all the concrete is terribly sad! Nature & natural is the way to go. Get back to basics. Save seeds for others to grow organic food, instead of throwing seeds away. Start composting. Build in an earth friendly manner using one of many techniques. Now we will get worse & worse tsunamis as we did recently, worse hurricanes & more of them, more storms. Cold climate states will become hot. Hot climate states will become cold. Shores will disappear with nearby houses. Many island will disappear. The planet will actually die without the rain forest-watch the special on the Amazon on Netflix. We must have the rain forest to provide certain things that make vital thing on the rest of the planet function. The ocean has been starting to die out. Seals won't have icebergs to escape polar bears, therefore polar bears will eventually lose their food source. Predictions from the Bible truly are coming true. Just remember that the first anti-christ whom many will believe is the true one, is not the real anti-christ. The second one will really be the guy to look out for and not trust. I am sorry to bring up such stuff on this blog but it is very important. Do not accept the mark of the beast. Do not accept a chip implant. There are a lot of aspects of this process that are super noteworthy - one of my favorites is: the process is labor intensive; it will be performed by volunteers who pay $2,000 to live on site and learn from experts. Presumably the experts get some of that and some goes to food costs. And the homeowners get their home built for free. I, certainly, would volunteer at a few of these to get people to volunteer for me. I suppose on average you'd have to basically build your own house, but how cool is a community working together to provide it's needs rather than all the exterior parties to a home building transaction standing on your back (financially).
One of my favourite aspects is how it brings people together. $2000 to be fed, while being with beautiful people (two of the people are good friends of mine, plus I know a few of the others. All good people) and learning from skilled international builders, is not that much. I've been to courses in different parts of the world (permaculture, sustainable building) , which cost just as much but only run for half as long, and without some of the communally driven aspects that make a project like this, so wonderful ^_^

This is win win for everyone involved. And for people not involved. Usually (typically dysfunctionally) we (the modern economy) is viewing everything as competition for scarce resources - negotiate the best deal where life becomes like a chess game - everything that's good for me is bad for you and vice versa. I've got to see if I can do one of these builds or some other cool permaculture project I'm interested in - building a food forest, say. People working together are fantastic. I gotta be part of something like this.
there are communities all over the world building houses like this and making new communities that serve as examples of how to lead a more fulfilling life that is not consumerism based. Oromocto, NB, Canada is one good example. It's basically a community of structures made in good ol' barn-raising fashion. You don't have to be white Amish, green, blue, black, orange, yellow or brown to find a life where you belong because of how your rejection of a society based on accumulating possessions rather than memories. An experience like this you can't put a dollar amount on. Gratitude!

That view from inside the green house over looking the green mountains and rolling hills is so beautiful the thought seeing that everyday from my home literally made me cry... born n raised in a city I've craved nothing more than this type of living. I think some of the viewers are unaware of how the earthship concept works. “Te Timatanga” was built according to Earthship Building Principles: 1. EARTHSHIP COURSE FEE - The $2,000 is what people invest in learning how to build an earthship. All Earthship building operates this way. 2. The learning involves physically helping to build another person’s Earthship so that people know how to build their own. You can enrol in one all over the world. Great way to travel. We need more in New Zealand. 3. It’s like a community project. The AMISH PEOPLE still build houses as a community. I remember in the islands that was how we built homes by rounding up the community to help and you provide refreshments as payment. 3. Of course if you get Free land, for any build, it is a bonus! But I think this couple would probably pay for land if they had to, in order to achieve their dream! I would!

Given an environment with high rain fall, it might be better to not build into the side of a hill with run off... Build on flat, with an earth thermal mass built up manually. This would allow for better drainage. Plus, the cooling tubes could run to the back of the house, reducing distance and cost.

Was in S. Lake Tahoe, CA for a proposed Boys and Girl's Club Earthship in 1995-96 and I visited Michael Reynold's Designed Earthship in Taos, NM. I read the books on it and wanted to see one built but the California one was Postponed and Cancelled before I had to move East. Then I just got too old and out of condition to do it. Fantastic design but labor intensive. Dennis Weaver (Chester on Gunsmoke) had one built at that time as well. Never thought of Mussel Shells would be an insulation. New ideas are what it's all about. Some work, some don't.

You have to remember that the people working there we're doing an internship. I can't believe negative people out there. Yes oh, they were blessed to have parents that gave them land. I didn't see them ever sitting back on their laurels watching everybody do the work for them. These people worked hard just as everyone else did. This home has much Blood Sweat and Tears pour it into it. It is absolutely stunning and I pray that they continue to have good luck that mold will not set in. What an absolute gift they're giving to their children that they should experience a childhood living in a home such as this one.

I don't begrudge people that have dreams, are appreciative of everyone and everything around them, find uses for man's excessive trash, find people who can afford to pay to travel, learn, share unique experiences, trust in their own power, the power of others, mankind for a higher/ larger goal to honor the earth so it can sustain itself, life in all forms and honor our creator with the same love and consideration that was given every element of our universe. Now if we could only recycle trash talk for housing, affordability, dignity and room for all we might actually get to enjoy more of what family is intended to be. Heaven help us...

I know of these get-togethers, where a group of people together build a cob-house. They contribute a bit to accommodation and food, so the house-owner does not have to pay for everything out of his own pocket. But it's never more than 200$. THAT is a real learning experience.

This is a beautiful build. I'm so happy for this family, they had beautiful ppl come out and put everything they had into this build and I could see it was all made with love and whole lot of muscle. Just wonderful. Congratulations on a beautiful dream come true to Gus and Sarah.
An incredible house. It was great watching it being built. The people who came to work for the summer are the real "heroes " of this project. They really put their best foot forward and worked very hard.

Well they may also live in the home when they rent it, I'm guessing its pretty hard to make a decent living in this small remote town they live in, not much industry and NZ is not known for high paying jobs. This is the most beautiful Earthship, I have ever seen. I am in love with the concept for natural and off grid living, but not the usual look of the finished homes. I love the way they built it into the hill and blended everything into the landscape.

They live on her parents land in a house owned by her parents, while saving up for their own house.
Their new house is going to be built on lands she got for free from her parents.
They've saved up 320.000 dollars for their new home.
They get people from all over the world to come help them with their project. Each helping hand has to pay 2.000 dollars for the experience.
Now dont get me wrong here - the house is fucking awesome - but under these conditions even a moron with 10 thumbs like myself could manage to get this build.

If I understood correctly, the participants are more or less, paying for two months for their own food (for I guess caterers that are mentioned that supply food), with 2.000 NZ Dollars (that is 1.282 US Dollars) and experience is reward for their free hard work. That money devided by 60 days (8 weeks) is 21,3 US Dollars per day. I am not sure if that includes some kind of lodgings, but for that amount per day I do not see how that would be managed. Also as the owners have mentioned at the end, in return they also might go and help some of the participants when they build their own earth ship in the future...
What I especially liked in the house concept, were a lot of light (including bottles that I did not expect to look that good) and the hallway with plants that can grow food all year round. The rest of self-sufficiency with water and elektricity also appeals to me. Not perhaps that crazy about natural materials I still find them OK, because they have some advantages like warmth from earth at winter, but the concept of the house is amazing.

Uh, sure, it wasn't just one of their many Tom Sawyer-esque schemes to convince rubes that they're doing them a favor to build their house. Lol, c'mon, the scene before was him lamenting that it's going to take him forever to do it himself.
Incidentally, they're renting this out for over $700 a night on AirBnB, so I feel like it's pretty clear that, while not being con artists per se, they were able to finesse people into building them a cheap investment property that's insanely expensive. I would bet almost anything they just used traditional materials and building methods during the months the camera crew wasn't around. They made some pretty big compromises about what materials to use, like just putting in an aluminum roof with polystyrene, and throwing some potted plants underneath to make it look natural. If you think anyone there learned how to make a house for themselves, I've got a bridge to sell you. Actually, I've got an eco bridge that you can pay me to build, I've got a buyer lined up.
WOOOWW!! It turned out so gorgeous! I looooove the light shining through those glass bottles! And I was crying a little towards the end when the interns came back to help. That was awesome! A home build with love. And in the end it turned out beautiful! Well done!! The stuff of big dreams! Persistence and positivity pays off!

I absolutely love the build completed by this couple and all of their helpers ... I chose an old abandoned meeting hall , installed temporary glass , built a glass wall along one side and both ends of the building ... installed solar panels , and soon adding wind turbines ... all for less than 50 k , Canadian dollars ... soon the salvaged hardwood flooring / thousands of seeds almost ready for planting / all salvaged materials ... 2.5 years in and tons left to accomplish ... converting generators to run off of hydrogen from solar energy production ... my building started out as a 60 x 30 foot building / added a 22 foot glass sun room / added a 16 foot at the other end / added a 12 x 52 foot glass walled green house on the south side facing the sun / all in all its been a good experience , learning to be 100% off grid ... go for it people ... I love the fact of not having energy bills every month / eating home grown food / and still having all modern conveniences ... I do have to say that it's been a serious venture into determination ... but I do love having no alarm clocks ... buy your equipment from auction houses / make existing equipment function for more than its original purposes .. learn / adapt / live far less stressful lives ... I have lots more to do and state , but all in all , it's a great experience ... so many options for living this type of life style are available ...

I am working on my wife now as far as getting her out of the mindset that we must buy a house from the bank that 50 other families have lived in. Im of the opinion that if i buy the land i can build/create a one of a kind custom home for us & our two kids can expand off of ours as they age out of our dwelling. But its been a long 10 years we've been renting houses & apartments so i feel she is almost on board with me.
Beautiful kind hearted people with a community of folks are like the Omnish Culture and their barn raising here in the United States... So happy for this young family who now have a lovely gorgeous Earth friendly home... Congratulations!

I was involved my whole life around soils, i can tell ya right now that is going to be a problem once the spores sprout they act as a natural wick for moisture, this area will need sprayed . And a very large area needs to have a curtain drain up behind the home and another moisture barrier installed on top and on the lower wall of the ditch and a collection pipe in the bottom with a barrier underneath the pipe. You need to have the pipe lower than the floor of the home. Preferably dig till you hit the imperiable layer where the tear firma begins. And pipe and drain to a daylighted area on both ends with exposed rodent proof caps. Good luck and keep a minfull eye on that wall always , molds can kill your investment in a very short period of time , i personaly would remove the organic mix you put on it and have it gunited with probably aquatic pool grout.
Wow the amount of negative cynical comments is amazing.... who cares if the land was free; work with what advantages you have. None of the workers were coerced into doing this, they all signed up for it for the experience. $2k for 2 months of free food and a place to stay isn't the worst deal. It was obviously still a very difficult and unique project despite the advantages of free land, subsidized labor, etc. Even building a normal house commonly has delays, issues due to weather, etc. I think it's an awesome project & hope the couple are fully enjoying their home. They will definitely have these memories (good and bad!) for a lifetime!

I live on vilage in Serbia. My friends and I, built house of 180m2 for 37.000 euros. -.- And I have big garden where I grow food, have my own well, I only use electricity from grid, and its like 10e per month. for next 45-50 years, I will pay 6000 euros for electricity. Food is free, water is free.

I feel like the husband is getting most of the credits for being "the dreamer and visioner" while he is actually profiting of his wife and her parents. She works three jobs, looks after the children and works on the buliding site in her free time. Still she feels guilty for not being on the building site the entire time!
I am sorry but the husband seems a little self-involved, while being portrayed as optimistic, sensible and loving. In reality he is putting huge stress on his wife for his dream, neglecting her worries!

This video has inspired my thinking absolutely. My organization is working with a town in Ghana to build a Youth Community Center that will serve as an After-School activities center for the youths. This video of an Earthship and the entire team just inspired my thinking and I wish to know more about the technicalities so I can properly plan. Also looking for volunteers who will come along this journey to build an After-School center made from natural materials and recycled materials.
I..used to run a simple portable sawmill on a handmade track trailer.. and you could find a grove of Pines around there .. and custom saw them 😉..and a telescopic forklift would accomplish the same thing.. as the crane..

and the biggest problem with doing homes fast ..
is that you have to get rid of all the drying moisture there is hundreds of gallons of water just stuck in the air.. moisture from mortar .. drywall ..paint ..They become an envelope of moisture ..
so you have to remove it ..
or in this case.. modern cob !
so therefore you must have ..window air conditioners, fans.. and tarps..
and you dry that stuff out ! The sales would’ve worked well for the tarps!
..if using air conditioners ..and box fans ..the lights are not needed ..
You see.. if you’re just blowing air at it ..and dehumidifying that air ...
That is the giant solution to the moisture problem.. & i saw a picture of the landscape around the house ..and it was almost foggy..100% humidity ..and it will dry out ...slow.. As you encountered ..

"It's a labor intensive process" ... The idea behind earthships is fandastic, but we need a more cost-efficient method if we are going to bring this concept to the general public.
Earth ships aren't meant to be ship up front. They are cheap in the long term. If you eliminate a water, electricity, and gas bill for 10 years, you're saving money. Not spending it. It is a large up front investment for savings in the long term. That's the idea anyway.

It wasn’t actually that expensive. Only $240,000 usd or £150,000 bps. That’s really cheap for a four bed. And they got people to pay to learn about how to build a house. The baby-boomers seem to forget that we have been trying to make as many as possible ideas to save the environment they ruined. And they call us lazy. (Soz that was a bit unrelated).
Most of this you could make or get from a skip. You could do it by yourself but it would take longer.

I'm a baby boomer and I totally agree with you. We should have always been doing what was best for the earth and the animals, including ourselves. I never liked the idea of making more & more buildings & all the concrete is terribly sad! Nature & natural is the way to go. Get back to basics. Save seeds for others to grow organic food, instead of throwing seeds away. Start composting. Build in an earth friendly manner using one of many techniques. Now we will get worse & worse tsunamis as we did recently, worse hurricanes & more of them, more storms. Cold climate states will become hot. Hot climate states will become cold. Shores will disappear with nearby houses. Many island will disappear. The planet will actually die without the rain forest-watch the special on the Amazon on Netflix. We must have the rain forest to provide certain things that make vital thing on the rest of the planet function. The ocean has been starting to die out. Seals won't have icebergs to escape polar bears, therefore polar bears will eventually lose their food source. Predictions from the Bible truly are coming true. Just remember that the first anti-christ whom many will believe is the true one, is not the real anti-christ. The second one will really be the guy to look out for and not trust. I am sorry to bring up such stuff on this blog but it is very important. Do not accept the mark of the beast. Do not accept a chip implant. There are a lot of aspects of this process that are super noteworthy - one of my favorites is: the process is labor intensive; it will be performed by volunteers who pay $2,000 to live on site and learn from experts. Presumably the experts get some of that and some goes to food costs. And the homeowners get their home built for free. I, certainly, would volunteer at a few of these to get people to volunteer for me. I suppose on average you'd have to basically build your own house, but how cool is a community working together to provide it's needs rather than all the exterior parties to a home building transaction standing on your back (financially).
One of my favourite aspects is how it brings people together.
$2000 to be fed, while being with beautiful people (two of the people are good friends of mine, plus I know a few of the others. All good people) and learning from skilled international builders, is not that much. I've been to courses in different parts of the world (permaculture, sustainable building) , which cost just as much but only run for half as long, and without some of the communally driven aspects that make a project like this, so wonderful ^_^

This is win win for everyone involved. And for people not involved. Usually (typically dysfunctionally) we (the modern economy) is viewing everything as competition for scarce resources - negotiate the best deal where life becomes like a chess game - everything that's good for me is bad for you and vice versa. I've got to see if I can do one of these builds or some other cool permaculture project I'm interested in - building a food forest, say. People working together are fantastic. I gotta be part of something like this.
there are communities all over the world building houses like this and making new communities that serve as examples of how to lead a more fulfilling life that is not consumerism based. Oromocto, NB, Canada is one good example. It's basically a community of structures made in good ol' barn-raising fashion. You don't have to be white Amish, green, blue, black, orange, yellow or brown to find a life where you belong because of how your rejection of a society based on accumulating possessions rather than memories. An experience like this you can't put a dollar amount on. Gratitude!

That view from inside the green house over looking the green mountains and rolling hills is so beautiful the thought seeing that everyday from my home literally made me cry... born n raised in a city I've craved nothing more than this type of living. This video taught me alot, and I'm sold on making my own earth ship someday.
I think some of the viewers are unaware of how the earthship concept works. “Te Timatanga” was built according to Earthship Building Principles:
1. EARTHSHIP COURSE FEE - The $2,000 is what people invest in learning how to build an earthship. All Earthship building operates this way.
2. The learning involves physically helping to build another person’s Earthship so that people know how to build their own. You can enrol in one all over the world. Great way to travel. We need more in New Zealand.
3. It’s like a community project. The AMISH PEOPLE still build houses as a community. I remember in the islands that was how we built homes by rounding up the community to help and you provide refreshments
as payment.

This is what folks in the USA way, way back in the day, used to call an old fashion barn raiser. Only difference, folks and community would do this as good neighbors.

This guy really made me laugh when he said, "this is serious, serious hard labor" while weakly lifting a sledge hammer. I don't think he has ever done a solid hour of hard labor in his life.
I didn't see that clip, but you can always tell those that know what hard work means or feels like. Often times what most refer to as hard work really ain't hard or really something that would be seen as work. Especially if you're benefitting from whatever you're working on

Given an environment with high rain fall, it might be better to not build into the side of a hill with run off... Build on flat, with an earth thermal mass built up manually. This would allow for better drainage. Plus, the cooling tubes could run to the back of the house, reducing distance and cost.

Was in S. Lake Tahoe, CA for a proposed Boys and Girl's Club Earthship in 1995-96 and I visited Michael Reynold's Designed Earthship in Taos, NM. I read the books on it and wanted to see one built but the California one was Postponed and Cancelled before I had to move East. Then I just got too old and out of condition to do it. Fantastic design but labor intensive. Dennis Weaver (Chester on Gunsmoke) had one built at that time as well. Never thought of Mussel Shells would be an insulation. New ideas are what it's all about. Some work, some don't.
