The Ridge settlers have cabins. The tents were for the visitors and the red coats!

Roger was a history teacher, that's why he knows the line of the vow.

In the book, Tryon dumped a bunch of Lowlander fisherfolk who didn't speak Gaelic and were Protestant on Jamie as his tenants. They don't exactly take to their Papist Highlander landlord. Roger, being a Protestant, helps ease the relationship between Jamie and the tenants.
I LOVE the Big House (and got teary-eyed when it burned down--that actually happens).
Bree is the spitting image of Ellen and is her namesake: Briana Ellen Fraser MacKenzie. (Yes, I'm leaving Frank out. Deal with it). Everyone who knew Ellen comments on it. Ironically, Jamie sees Claire in Bree. I guess it's all a matter of perspective.
Auntie Jo...oh, Auntie Jo is SUCH a MacKenzie. She plots; she manipulates; she rides roughshod over people. But I love her anyway. There are things in the book that just...broke my heart.
Fergus and Marsali are certainly prolific, FYI.
In the book, it took her a while to name that baby boy. Diana did that to us again with another baby. One ENTIRE book, that baby didn't have a name other than a rather odd nickname. She's got a sadistic streak. Roger's middle name is Jeremiah, which was his father's name. Wee Jemmy is HIS. Periodt. Jeremiah Alexander Ian Fraser MacKenzie. Pretty typical of the time with some families.
The wearing of tartan was only banned in Scotland and England. In the colonies, where there were WAY fewer redcoats, Highlanders can pretty much dress as they wish. In the book, Jamie wears a kilt a lot more than he does in the show. They found a weaver who knew the Fraser pattern.

Oh, I love and miss the bagpipes too! But how dramatic was that Fiery cross scene?!.. the pipes, the drums, and the kilt come back! LJG wasn't the only one swooning! lol!
Yes, Claire has told Jamie who Roger is descended from (in the book, at least, he knows).
The settlers are mostly Ardsmuir men, who will follow Jamie pretty much anywhere.

Fergus and marsali are surprised that Jamie Calls him for the oath ( to join his army) because he is missing a hand, and back then it meant you were considered half a man… fergus sometimes feels not good enough because of his handicap, so it’s a self confidence booster that Jamie even considers him for this…

That’s the same kind of oath taking that was done in season 1 at Column’s gathering…when the men pledge their fielty to him.

Hey Anna, I've been watching your reactions for a while and just wanted to say that I adore them all!! A part of this fandom hates Brianna, the other part hates Roger, and generally, reactors act as if they should distance themselves from these two and it's very refreshing to see someone who doesn't. I love how you give every character some tolerance and comment on their actions without caring which one does it. Especially for Brianna, these two seasons were too heavy, and as I can relate to her every fear and every doubt, every action; ( that may seem senseless at the time ) having someone reacting to Outlander, who gives Bree empathy and understanding she needs really makes me happy and seen. So just wanted to thank you!! you are amazing

Yes, Bree and Roger both came to the past intending to go back 'home'. They have homes, jobs, lives in the future. Even Claire wanted them to go back. Only Jamie wanted them to stay, but then he only knows the one world.
You're right on the public display of affection. Even with a married couple touching anything but hands was too much, and no public kissing would have been acceptable. I was born in the 1950's and they have more PDA going on here than was permissible when I was child, though at a wedding I suppose the happy couple were allowed a public kiss or two, but certainly no more. Women held hands, sisters, mothers and daughters, friends, but they NEVER held hands with boyfriends or even husbands in public (except to assist her out of the car or through a crowd, etc.)
Jocasta needs a "husband" because women couldn't do business in those days. She's running a thriving plantation but can't sign contracts or even do her own banking. At this stage she doesn't care much who that husband might be so long as he doesn't interfere with her decisions and directions. She doesn't want him to run the place, she can do that very well herself. He's just the figurehead so she intentionally chooses a weak man who understands his place. Duncan Innis in the book was a worn out old seaman with only one arm destined to starve on the streets if Jamie hadn't taken him in as a fellow Scotsman and found him a job he could do and given him dignity. He knows his place is Jocasta's pet poodle.
That fealty vow is the same one given to clan lairds back in the highlands. It's the vow given to Collum by Dugal (and everyone else) back in season one in The Gathering.
Bree sees, and wonders about the seeds being sown here for the modern Ku Klux Klan with the clan vows and burning crosses. It morphed into something very different by modern times but she sees where the symbolism started.

I hope this isn't a spoiler, but until I read the Firey Cross I did not know about the War of the Regulation, which was a precursor to the Revolution. I loved this episode, it was light, but of course this is Outlander, so it doesn't last.

2:11 Oh, I agree. I mean, it's implied in that far away camera shot that Claire and Jamie told Brianna everything, but I agree they should make it a bit more clear. The books have that problem too, where we're not sure who is aware. I think the whole Roger/Bonnet misunderstanding taught them to do better at communicating.
17:18 As you can see, Jocasta was totally testing Roger here, to see if he was worthy of her niece. He passed with flying colors. This is why I love Jocasta, despite her overstepping and somewhat manipulative ways. It comes from a place of love. She's accepted Jamie and his family as her own, and with that comes her unique brand of protection.
17:55 They didn't explain very well that Jamie wants Josiah because he's a fine hunter too young to join the militia. This means Josiah can stay on the Ridge to provide food for the families that the men left behind.
I'm vaguely annoyed by all the extras running around in seasons 5 and 6. It's true that there are several families settled on the Ridge by this point, (they've actually been on the Ridge a few years now - that little boy that said Roger had ticks, Germain, is Fergus and Marsali's oldest) but it doesn't make sense that there would be that many people around Claire and Jamie's house. The settlers have their own cabins to tend. I think the tents are supposed to belong to the visitors - Tryon, Jocasta, Lord John, other redcoats, etc.
I don't know, it's difficult to compare with the book because Roger and Bree were actually married at the Gathering of Scots at Mount Helicon, along with a lot of other random people. And there were Regulators there, but they made themselves scarce when (friendly-ish) redcoats showed up. Lord John was not there. Actually, John isn't really in books 5-6 except for letters. He'd only been to Fraser's Ridge the one time he visited with William, yet he keeps popping back up unexpectedly on the show. Not that we mind. You are so right that he was swooning at Jamie's speech. 20:46 The look on his face!

      @AnnaAlexanderAuthor  ปีที่แล้ว

John is the best! And that's smart of Jamie making sure there is someone who could provide for the ridge while he's gone.

Sehenswert 💯💯💯💯💯💕💖👌👍

Totally understand the "just talk about it" complains, it also drives me crazy sooo often. On the other hand, if we take for example the rom-com genre, no movie would be longer than 30 minutes, since then comes normally the break that only happens because they don't talk, or maybe one wants to talk but the other just doesn't listen and runs away instead. Soooo annoying.
