The best punch I ever saw Robinson throw was the rematch left hook against fulmer. If you watch it again, you can see ray drop the left, just a little bit, causing fulmer to lower his right expecting a body shot, fulmer fell for the feint and ray landed that PERFECT left hook to fulmers head and ENDED the fight with that 1 shot. I do have to point out that he did say that "Robinson rarely fought in New York BEFORE the Joey Maxim fight" which was in 1952. Robinson fought for another 10 years after that fight (1955-1965) after retiring for 3 years. So a lot of those 39 fights in New York did happen after that Maxim fight. But considering he fought over 200 times, 39 times if relatively low for a guy who lived in New York for most of his life. So, I respectfully have to disagree with you. Pete Hamill knows his boxing and is not wrong with what he said.

1:36:30 - 1:37:01 This is nonsense. Practically everything Bert Sugar says here is incorrect. Robinson only knocked Turpin down in the 10th round and this was shortly before the end of the fight. He did so out of desperation as Turpin had already cut Robinson by this stage and the referee, Ruby Goldstein, told Robinson that he was only going to give him one more round. And if you look closely at the final round, Robinson missed with a large number of the punches he threw at Turpin before the fight was stopped.
Gotta remember that he was old and he knew so much about boxing that he was bound to get some things wrong. He’s quite possibly the greatest historian in boxing history.

I'm a massive Tyson fan. In his prime, no boxer in the history of boxing was more ferocious, more feared, more devastating or had more first round KO's than Tyson. 51-6 with 44 KO's. Tyson is the pinnacle of boxing. However, if you're talking pound for pound the best fighter to ever live, it's without a doubt Rocky Marciano. 49-0 with 43 KO's. Yeah, Mayweather had one more win than Marciano but Mayweather only had 27 KO's and ran backward most of his career to avoid damage. Marciano went right through your punches and knocked you out no matter who you were. If Tyson and Marciano had a chance to fight each other in their primes, Tyson would have surely knocked out Marciano fast. With 6 loses though, Tyson can't wear the Greatest Of All Time crown. Tyson, Robinson and Mayweather are GOATS for sure but they aren't thee GOAT. Marciano wears that crown. Always will.

The great Eddie Perkins would have had Mayweather punching at air. He was as illusive as Willy Pep. In my opinion none of the all time greats would have been flummoxed by Mayweathers defense. His father tried that against Ray Leonard Kid Gavilan did the shoulder roll. Billy Graham was a master boxer. Duran a much greater defensive fighter with a killer offense at LW and WW.

I do have to point out that he did say that "Robinson rarely fought in New York BEFORE the Joey Maxim fight" which was in 1952. Robinson fought for another 10 years after that fight (1955-1965) after retiring for 3 years. So a lot of those 39 fights in New York did happen after that Maxim fight. But considering he fought over 200 times, 39 times if relatively low for a guy who lived in New York for most of his life. So, I respectfully have to disagree with you. Pete Hamill knows his boxing and is not wrong with what he said.

I think he must have meant as a comparison to his total number of fights (201 by most sources).... in which case its only a fifth of the number of total fights......he was 5 times more likely to be fighting elsewhere....... But still, I wouldn't have said it was a rarety. 5% or under is what I'd call rare-not 20%

Ans as for the Joey Maxim fight, it's obvious if the fight was 12 rounds like todays rules, Ray would've been a 6 time World Champ and even more since he probably wouldn't have retired and defend his title easier than the Maxim fight since he would have defended with a more light heavy defined body by this time! To me the winner of that fight was the sun lol All kidding aside Joey won fair and square! with a steady survivors style making sure he didn't succumb to utter darkness through all them angles Ray blasted him with! This is nonsense. Practically everything Bert Sugar says here is incorrect.
Robinson only knocked Turpin down in the 10th round and this was shortly before the end of the fight. He did so out of desperation as Turpin had already cut Robinson by this stage and the referee, Ruby Goldstein, told Robinson that he was only going to give him one more round.
And if you look closely at the final round, Robinson missed with a large number of the punches he threw at Turpin before the fight was stopped.
Gotta remember that he was old and he knew so much about boxing that he was bound to get some things wrong. He’s quite possibly the greatest historian in boxing history.

I'm a massive Tyson fan. In his prime, no boxer in the history of boxing was more ferocious, more feared, more devastating or had more first round KO's than Tyson. 51-6 with 44 KO's. Tyson is the pinnacle of boxing. However, if you're talking pound for pound the best fighter to ever live, it's without a doubt Rocky Marciano. 49-0 with 43 KO's. Yeah, Mayweather had one more win than Marciano but Mayweather only had 27 KO's and ran backward most of his career to avoid damage. Marciano went right through your punches and knocked you out no matter who you were.
If Tyson and Marciano had a chance to fight each other in their primes, Tyson would have surely knocked out Marciano fast. With 6 loses though, Tyson can't wear the Greatest Of All Time crown. Tyson, Robinson and Mayweather are GOATS for sure but they aren't thee GOAT. Marciano wears that crown. Always will.
