Great music isn’t underrated, it’s just not as appreciated by the popcorn munching masses who only consume top 40 music. But pretty much anyone over 30 who plays guitar has respect for Jerry Cantrell, or has been living under a rock. And I am no music snob, I don’t care what you listen to, if you have a passion for music, we have something in common. I absolutely despise these pricks who will be like “I bet you don’t even know that Taylor Swift progression is borrowed from another song”. Dude, shut up! As if she’s the first person to “copy” a strong I IV vi V chord progression. That chord progression cannot be “copied“. It’s like a quarter of all songs made since 1950 hahaha. You are only copying something, if it’s really really unique, like the Hollies “air that I breathe” progression used by Radiohead for “Creep”. But those guys knew what they were doing, and even pay homage to the original. I think if any progression could ever be copywritten, It would be the Beatles weird Lydian thing on “eight days a week“. Because the feel, and the tonality of that progression is basically quintessentially Beatles. I mean John and Paul had an extensive knowledge of classical music, so they had heard things like that before, but working it into a pop song? Genius.
LOVE Alice In Chains; my favorite 90s Grunge Band. Something about Jerry Cantrell's guitar sound, their licks and then what sets them apart...those harmony vocals between Layne Staley and Cantrell. Also like STP and Soundgarden, with Nirvana and Pearl Jam much farther down the list.
amazing riff but what i think really makes this song shine is how layne puts so much power into his performance. the power in his voice that contrasts with the more downtempo mellow nature of the rest of the song makes it all the more heartbreaking.

Probably my favorite band. Got goosebumps hearing you play that. As a toddler, one band's sound stuck with me up till now at the age of 23. That was AiC. I Stay Away is a big reason why. I remember visiting my dad and brothers in Indiana, riding in his old red jeep by cornfields in the sunset while that song was blaring.

Every band member is so criminally underrated. I wonder where they would be now had none of them had addictions. They would be the biggest band on earth easily.
This was my favorite song as a kid/teenager. Saw Alice in Chains live this summer. The level of experience they had was amazing. Bush opened and Breaking Benjamin were there too. Hell of a show!
