CORRECTION: An astute viewer informed me that there has been recent scholarship that has corrected some of my statements. (Thank you, Janet!) This movement was in fact NOT written in cut time, but in common time. Clementi's own fingering choices (which are different than what I suggested) can also be tried by looking at an urtext. I recommend checking out this new scholarly edition which explains many of Clementi's own revisions/editions and is generally quite helpful for historical context as well as understanding editorial choices. bit.ly/39M3zEQ
Love this Janna! Several of my students are working on this piece right now so this video popped up at a great time. Lots of great info in here. - Selena
My Schirmer book for op. 36 has the most bizarre fingering for that tricky passage, starting with 1-3 (E to C). Wait. What?! A misprint? I'm looking at it now. I was near the piano and followed your advice: 4-2, 3-1, 4-2, etc. Wow. So much easier, though I'm embarrassed that I couldn't figure that out by myself. I kept starting 3-1 and couldn't find my way to the right ending hand position. Oh well. The challenges of being an adult piano student! Thanks for these videos. I've also subscribed.
1-3 on E-C certainly does sound like a misprint! I’m glad you found my fingering helpful. I did have another teacher contact me and let me know that Clementi himself wrote all 4-2-4-2-4-2 in an early edition. Might be worth a try in comparison to 4-2-3-1.
