- Sentenced started as a death metal band and progressed from there to sort of gothic metal act. So which one is the best and which one is the worst in their discography, and why? Jerry tells his own opinion.

So far I have their "North From Here".
Cannot wait to discover the rest of their discography.
Thanks for the great review Jerry! Cheers man!
I really hope that journey turned to be unforgettable)
Down is amazing, Has this suffocating and cold feeling throughout. The guitars are lovely from the start of the album to the finish. The vocals I love them as well, Ville trying to sound more brutal on some songs, since he probably heard their previous stuff and tried to blend in :) Noose is a classic happy sing-along song, Shadegrown is cool, dark and melodic, Bleed perhaps the song they should really go for a single / music video / radio. It's a splendid feel good sunshine-y song :D (until you read the lyrics). Keep my grave open is cool song, great guitar riffs... Crumbling Down is another an amazing song. One of my favorites, I love how they incorporated female vocals in this song I wish they would use female vocals in more of their songs. Sun won't shine is a banger. Ode to the end is splendid with that rhytrm during the choirus that reminds me of a whip being swung, and how not to mention the haunting female vocals in this song as well. 0132 is an instrumental intermission, that doesn't hurt and the warrior of life is also pretty good song, the last song I'll throw the first rock, I think it's my least favorite of the album, but still very decent, especially the guitar work.
Great video man👍 My favorite album is The Funeral Album, I think that it is fantastic 😎 You mentioned HIM, any chance of a similar video with their discography? 🙈
Hmm. Maybe HIM some day
@@RautaMetal That would be awesome 😎
My Ranking :
8. North From Here
7. Crimson
6. Frozen
5. Down
4. Amok
3. Shadows of the Past
2. Funeral Album
1. The Cold White Light
Just have to mention that i have a lot of nostalgia towards sentenced , basically one of my favorites growing up , i was born the year Frozen was released (98) too bad they never got a bigger audience
They were actually quite big in Finland and Europe back in the days.
@@RautaMetal yeah i know they were quite big in finland and some other countries , i meant that in my opinion they deserved much bigger audience
@temesk7631 I hear you
For me they are one of my absolute favorite banda, and so underrated! I connect with Teknulat's guitar melodies like no other, he is (was r.i.p.) my favorite guitarist.... but only form Down onwards. They are like 2 different bands. I also like Amok, but not as much as their later stuff. I also love Amorphis later stage, and In Flames also got from death metal to more melodic stuff. I love all of these bands :)
Legendary sentenced…
🤘🤘🤘❤
The Funeral Album is amazing. Overall the saddness feels powerful. Ville said in their funeral manifesto, we decided to end our career at the pinnacle of our success, instead of producing more albums and get gradually worse, or something along those lines. I still feel so bad about this because I believe the Funeral album was one of their very best albums. May today become the day opens up witrh such a killer base and riff, you just cannot pass by without headbanging.Ever-Frost is pretty decent Sentenced style song, We are but falling leaves is amazing, so good, one of my absolute favorites. Her last 5 minutes is a nice ballad with that cold guitar sound effect they use with an epic melodic solo at the end. Where waters fall frozen is something out of this world, so short and so sweet and so EPIC. Dispar-ridden hearts similar vain as Ever-frost, very decent song, Vengence is mine is pure epicness with tear jerk at the end with the spectacular children's chorus, ahh the voices of innocence (lost). A long way to nowere is also pretty classic Sentenced song, Consider us dead pretty much the same, Lower the flags, great song the funeral still goin on, they lower the flags into the grave in sign of respect and farewell, Drain me is also pretty decent you can feel it the, nihilistic dispute in a dysfunctional relationship. Karu is another sweet acoustic guitar intemission that feels nice to the ears, beautiful, slow, melanchonic and short. A perfect intro for the last song that is mind-blowingly good. End of the road is prehaps and in my opinion the best farewell that Sentenced could have given us, melodic, heavy, doom-ish, with orgasmically beautiful guitar work, solos and another tear-jerking chorus of the innocent children... the song rings in your head long after it's finished.
I’ve always put favourite Sentenced albums in two categories. Jarva era Amok and Laihiala era The Cold white light.
Understandable. Almost like two different bands in a way!
Yeah, Amok was a good album
Sentenced was one of my favorite bands as a teenager, The Cold White Light is definitely my favorite album by them, I think it's the best song writing of their career so it's cool you heard that too being that you've not listened to the newer Sentenced. I can over all agree with your line up I think it's a very objective break down of the band, though i think Crimson is better than Shadows of the Past. Great video!
Thanks man. I took this as a challenge to go through since I pretty much thought I'd not like anything post-Amok.
@@RautaMetalWell this video definitely shows you're objective reviewer as much as you can be and that's good you were able to enjoy some of their later stuff, they're not a band I listen to so much anymore for a long time but they're definitely over all a good band and important. Definitely good for when you're feeling like having a dose of Finnish melancholy. One thing is I too never really liked North From Here so much, some songs have good riffs but I've always felt the way you described that the songs kinda wander around in ways that don't really make sense. Never really understood the worship of that album, but to each their own.
Thanks for your words, Karl.i try to remain objective but of course in the end all reviews are subjective to one's liking.
Yes. Sentenced definitely defines Finnish melancholy well in metal music.
I feel the same way about NFH.
Neverlasting is the biggest hit on White cold light, imo. Splendid album.
I found this band as a teenager in the early 2000's, first tracks I heard were off of North from Here and I really liked what I heard. A while later I found Crimson in a used record shop and was really disappointed with it but that was when I was younger and, like you, had a more "strict" taste in music. I should go back and give them another chance after all these years.
Yeah, it's a good idea to giver another chance to a band you haven't listened for years. Sometimes it works magic: I rediscovered Paradise Lost around 2007 when I had "abandoned" the band around 1996. And now it's one of my favorite bands.
Agreed on the No. 1. Not so much otherwise :) Got into them around the same time, mid-90's, and really dig the first four albums. After those they kinda lost me, except for TCWL, which is fucking amazing.
For me it is always Crimson. No one ever understands it, but it's the sound on the album. It is the only album ever that I have never get bored to listen to. The sound is also so unique. Of course I like the newer and older ones as well but Crimson is the best.
Crimson was my gateway to Sentenced. Someone lended me the CD and said to me, maybe you'll like this. Already the first time I put it inside, my mind was blown. Amazing. Memorable. Top!
The Funeral Album is my favorite, actually.
I love the funeral album so much!

Top 3 1) The cold white light 2) Amok 3) Frozen
Listening to Amok again has been such a trip... After 25 years, I find myself mouthing the words to Forever Lost and Dance on the Graves almost before I hear them - still fresh. My favorite songs on the album, like they must have been back then.
Forgot how fucking good Miika Tenkula is on that guitar... He had talent, man.
Yeah. He had.. Rip.
For me the track I fell in love the most on Amok is Nepenthe. The album is great.
Miss them all the time.
same
So far i only have the Shadows of the Past 2CD reissue with the demos. Good album.
One of the few people explicitly requesting a thumbs down. kudos for that!
😎
I'm glad that Down was not a demo and Frozen the actual album, because then we would not have 2 amazing and different but kind of a similar feel, albums :D
Well, I just have to say that Down is one of my absolute favourites. It brings such a specific dim atmosphere... Shadegrown, Keep My Grave Open, Ode to the End, Warrior of Life and I'll Throw the First Rock are just the perfect tracks that I spent some much time listening to throughout my two-years-lasting and still-progressing depression. Walking in a rainy ever-green autumn forest while diving into the Down material is just the best way you can feel what Sentenced really were: depressive, cold, despaired, suicidal but yet so intelligent and thought-provoking.
And even though the first track I heard was Bleed in My Arms from Crimson, I highly recommend checking out Down even if you have never heard of the band before. Just be in the right mood.
Thanks for the comment. I hope you have beaten your depression tho.
Finally! After so long of patience waiting.
Amok, Down and North From Here are my favorite albums! 🤘
My favorite Sentenced albums.
The Cold White Light, Frozen, Amok , I'd rather of gotten The Funeral Album than not have been made. But The Cold White Line nailed it. I could enjoy any of the albums. The first 2 albums had some black metal like atmosphere for me as much as Death Metal. Though not as honed in focused.
Nepenthe is my favorite song from Amok, but I didn't listen enough to this album. I like it a lot tho.
One of my favourite bands of all time. Sorely missed. Difficult ranking to do considering the huge variances in style from the early to mid 90s. Top three would probably be Shadows of the Past, Amok and Down/Frozen tied for third. I could never get into North From Here despite repeated efforts. Very interesting video and ranking. Cheers for that. RIP Miika. \m/
Thanks for the comment. Yes, a difficult band to put in worst to best given their style changed so much over the years.
Worst to best IMO:
Shadows of the Past
- Never gave anything that wouldn't have been done better by other old school DM bands
Frozen
- Lack of any high points during the whole CD
Down
- A couple of really catchy songs though not as matured in style as later albums of the latter era
Crimson
- Solid melancholic metal album but also little bit too polished
Funeral Album
- Some songs have little bit of cringe but also has some of the best songs (1-3 and the last) ever done by the band
Amok
- Groovy and melodic death metal. There's not much negative to say.
North From Here
- True original. Have never faced anything by anyone catching that cold and weird song writing that doesn't let the listener grow numb with the music.
CWL
- As stated in Rauta's review.
Thanks for your own list!
Early Sentenced until 1996 are my alltime favorites.
heh hyvin perustelet mutta omat suosikit ovat amokista crimsoniin ja nortti perään kaikki uppoaa mut huonoiten cold white light
Jes. Makuja on monia 👍
Very interesting! When I was 15 or something and mostly listened to Slayer and Metallica, Frozen was recommended as "a Finish Metallica" and I bought it, and it sounded nothing like Metallica and I was so dissapointed I have stayed away from the band.
Bas comparison 😀
I remember hearing that same comparison! Back when they were big in the mid nineties when i was in highschool. I liked them but even at the time thought that comparison was bullshit...
@@beenright5115 Yeah, back then it was not as easy to check for yourself haha. A lot of really crappy stuff one would never have bought today.
Started listening to Sentenced again lately, when I read an article in a Finnish newspaper about the hysteria around their track "Routasydän" from 2003. Probably one of the first bullshit nazi accusations in Finnish metal scene, lol. Anyway, I'm really liking the early death metal stuff. Nothing wrong with the later stuff of the band, just not that much my cup of tea. But damn, Miika Tenkula was an under-appreciated guitarist. Lepää rauhassa.
Agreed. Btw Taneli Jarva interview coming up
Nice, looking forward to it!
My favorite Song is "Desert by night"
Hands down My favorite band
The BEST! Sentenced
What’s your favorite album then by them? That’s the question.
I think their worst album is cold white light and their best is north from here.
Wow. That's interesting take considering many like CWL quite a bit!
North from here and Shadows of the past, I don't even remeber, that probably means I didn't like them at all at the time I listened to them.
They are death metal - so they don't like other Sentenced albums at all.
I know
👍
