The guitar playing of Michael Kelly Smith is some of the best for me. Long Way To Love guitar solo is still one of the greatest guitar solos. As a guitar player, I HAD to learn it....I still play it today fairly regularly, for enjoyment and warming up before a gig.
Johnny Dee is a friend of mine…really great guy. His main band Doro are fantastic. He also filled in on drums with the top INXS tribute act in the US for for a couple years. Thanks for the doc RNR! 😎
Don't forget Johnny D played in Le Compt with Billy Childs. Yes I was a empire rock club guy in the 80/90s Johnny was awesome on drums but Jimmy was a great guitar player that got on credit. And I beat Bill in dome hockey every time. Said I'm the greatest. Lol
Britny Fox, Cinderella, and Tangier are in my top favorites from the Philly-South Jersey scene. Another group that hit big around this time was Kix, which I think are still going strong today.
Except Kix actually started way back in 1978, and they are Maryland. I definitely agree about Tangier. They were amazing with their 1988-1989 lineup that put-out the great *Four Winds* album. Even their replacement lineup for their 1991 *Stranded* album was great, and was more Metal.
It's not often that replacement singers are as good as the originals, but I think Tommy Paris was a great replacement for Dean. Different style and the dude could actually sing. I can't imagine those first 2 albums with anyone other than Dean, but Tommy killed it on Bite Down Hard.
Bite Down hard is a great album! I still listen to half the tracks today. Tommy Paris, in my opinion, is one of the best vocalist of that genre. His recent solo material is decent. Britny Fox always had a great sound. Underrated for sure.

Michael was always cordial to me although I never took lessons from him. The music business was so strange back then. THANK YOU for doing this doc on Britny Fox. I saw them open for "Stephen Pearcy's "RATT" on June 23rd of 2023! We had a GREAT TIME!!! Stephen really enjoyed himself too!
My band did a gig with them about 12 years ago or so, and as far as we knew Billy was the only original member. I do believe Paris was the frontman at the time as well. We played a relatively small rock club in the Dayton, Ohio area, and there was literally 30-40 people there, including my bands wives/girlfriends and friends. I’m not saying this as an insult to the band, I thought they sounded great actually, but it was sorta sad. I still have the shirt I wore onstage that night, that Mr. Childs kindly signed for me 😎
My band did the same thing a couple of times, opened up for a few well know bands back in the 90's' when it came time for them to take the stage' there were only handful of people left in the crowd. If I'd been thinking' I should have got some autograph off some of those guys before we started playing.
Obviously everyone stopped listening after the original singer left according to what everybody keeps typing here in the chats! They need to forget about their 1st two albums for a sec and listen to 'Bite Down Hard'. It'll blow 'em away, not only as their best album but as the most criminally underated hard rock album of the entire 90's!!!
I went to work as the parts room manager at Silver Bay Seafoods in Alaska about 4 years ago and had that CD in a boom box in my office. Somebody stole it at some point! I honestly didn't mind too much as I see it as exposing more (and likely younger) people to it. I already have it ripped to my laptop so it's not like I really "lost" anything.
I was 8 years old and a true Metal head in 1989, and I absolutely loved Britney Fox. I couldn't wait for the, "Long Way To Love" video to come on. When Grunge came through I fucking hated it (still do) it took away the party and that good time feeling that was still in the air around the late 80's and very early 90's. Love Britney Fox and all the bands of the era, forever!!!
@@jeffhenry7749 I've been saying that since I was a kid/teenager back in the 90's. It got especially worse during the mid-90's up to the late 90's. I hated all that shit...I hated and still hate Rap and hip hop with a fucking passion, that too killed and is continuing to murder real music. I stick to music from 1955-1992. Old rock and roll from the 50's, the British invasion, the British blues boom, psychedelic pop/rock, progressive, early to mid 70's proto metal, N.W.O.B.H.M., glam metal, speed/thrash metal, power metal, old school blues and most forms of jazz from 1966-1979. The only music genre I listen to that's somewhat current is Indie/dreampop and some of the shoegaze stuff, but other than that real music is in a very sad state these days.

I saw Britney Fox at the University of Kentucky Singletary Center when I was 17. It was standing room only and I was in the front row. The 80's were awesome. 🤘
Britney Fox's first 2 albums were released in 1988 and 1989. Before Firehouse, Skid Row, Bullet Boys, and even Warrant had an album. I was in the 8'th grade at the time and remember this well because I went out and bought both of Britney Fox's first 2 albums immediately.

It's funny Dean Davidson named a band of his Black Eyed Susan. Because my old band Later That Day recorded at Dean's house in NJ. Our band had a song titled...Black Eyed Susan. I guess we inspired the band's name. I remember when Dean was recording an album at the time and he played some of the music for us before it was released.
Dean did the same for us and our band... i heard he married a model and moved to Paris..? Long Way to Love is a legit great song, Girlschool is a classic trashy (in a good way) 80's hair metal rocker. I recall thinking Dream On (seeing the video on MTV) would be a huge hit, but somehow didn't gain traction, and you really didn't hear from them again. That said, a good trip down memory lane, especially since their self titled album was probably the 2nd album I ever owned (on cassette), as I was 12.
I was granted the opportunity of having a guitar lesson with Micheal Kelly Smith last year...He was the coolest, nicest guy ever. Not to mention super down to earth and extremely generous. Britny Fox deserves so much more than they ever received.🤘🏼
i sat 3rd row center for Ratt, Britny Fox & KIX (maybe like '87ish) and even spoke with ratt live on the radio earlier in the day of the show. still have a guitar pick from KIX from that show.
Saw them at the Stone in SF, remember Michael Smith was there. Cool to hear about these guys. Back in early 90's when I suppose glam was still in but going out. No DD there 😮 but I have one of his guitar picks
Thank you for this. Britney Fox was one of my favorites growing up, especially the Boys in Heat album. If its possible, can you do some research on Saraya, and other bands that were on the Shocker soundtrack?
I saw Britny Fox about 10 years ago in a small bar. Michael Kelly Smith is the the real deal. He's among the best guitar players to come out of that amazing era. Definitely under rated since he never makes any best guitar player lists. He could hold his own with any of the top names.
The fight between Dizzy and the others where the guitarist's arm was broken didn't happen onstage during their club tour, it was backstage when they were supporting Lita Ford with Tuff in the opening slot. Tuff singer Stevie Rachelle witnessed the whole thing and has gone into detail about it on metalsludge. He even spoke to Dean as Dean was packing his suitcase to bail on the whole thing.
According to a MetalSludge Johnny Dee interview: "He went after Michael (Kelly Smith), threw him up against the door in the hotel, and Michael sprained his wrist."
Great band of the day. Story demonstrates how hard it is to make a living in a band, on the road. I've read or heard that the record c.o fired MKS from Cinderella for not being a good enough guitarist? Seriously ??. He's a great guitarist, far superior skills than Jeff labar was. Shame B.F came about a few years too late to get traction & success. I have all 3 studio cds and Boys in Heat is an awesome hard rock cd . Loved their look and sound The perfect Hair glam metal band. Would be fantastic to see all original members tgthr again
I agree, MKS had the talent for Cinderella. I think he may have been seen as a threat to Keifer as the main guitarist/songwriter in the band and they cut MKS.
I heard a different reason. The record company thought MKS & Destra looked too old to market on MTV. They told Tom & Eric to replace them with younger faces.
@@adamkane7513 Makes sense....TV ruled music back then, image was far more important than playing. Bon Jovi was told to get rid of Alec Such for the same reason, but refused.
Many years later i delivered a safe to this dudes apartment in NE Philly turns out it was the lead guitarist of Britney Fox it was a surreal moment! I told him about the concert experience and got to fan boy out for an hour while we installed safe inside his apartment he had gold record up on wall
I remember Britny Fox noted on their website a long time ago that they snagged an opening spot for Guns N Roses for a show in Japan and their live cover of Hair of the Dog inspired GNR to do their own cover.
Great job, saw them a few years ago at The Troubadour and it was so sad as there were literally 30 people there. I think Childs was the only classic lineup member on the show.
Great vid! I’ve always loved Britny Fox and felt like they were just a little too late to the party. Hopefully they can get back together for another album and some festivals like many bands from that era have done. Too much talent being wasted by not doing something
I blasted both video’s in my party house 10 years ago when I was 42 and the girls were a lot younger. They got turned-on and everyone had fun. Thank you “The Fox.”
Don't really care for GIRSCHOOL, but I'll tell ya. I still listen to Long Way To Love on a regular basis when I'm in the hair metal mood. Giddy-up guitar always wrecks me, and that song is a masterpiece. That whole album was pretty great.
Dizzy Dean was actually pretty active around Philadelphia after the Blackeyed Susan album. He actually put together another version of Blackeyed Susan that included Black Cowes guitarist Jeff Cease and recorded a demo called Just A Taste…..as in just a taste of what’s to come. But that only lasted a few months. He recorded another album under the band name Love Saves The Day, Then for whatever reason he recorded a demo under the name Jarod Dean that was pretty much only heard of in the Philly area…..it was god awful if I’m being honest. He finally released a solo album called Drive My Karma that I think you can still find of iTunes. Then about 10 years ago or more he said he was working on a country album, was somewhat active on social media, and even made a full blown video for a country song. Then out of nowhere removed it all and vanished into musical obscurity. His friend recorded a lot of the stuff on video in the 90’s. There is a great hour plus video on TH-cam of some of those musical projects.
his story is one i would love to hear, told by him. he was crazy talented, and his deal for blackeyed susan, at the time, was one of the biggest the label had ever given.
@@patrickreeves4650 You're right. They were so behind it that I remember stories how they even had to pay another band off to use the name because it was already trademarked. The Black Crowes first album was huge at the time, as a gap between hair metal and grunge, and it got a lot of comparison to that. He had the look, the band, the songs, and everything, but listening to that album all these years later, I think it's just an over produced album. It would have been a lot better as a more guitar oriented album and not so many keyboards, horns, backing vocals, and all that. Do a TH-cam search of "Dean Davison 403 Liberty Lane' and you'll see a full video of all he did thru the 90's, it's pretty cool.
@@rkline65 the 403 liberty lane stuff is super cool. the era of blackeyed susan was always my favorite, and the record was great, but i totally agree...it was over-produced, and the single chosen to lead the record was a terrible choice. i would have run with she's so fine, or the ballad that wound up on harley davidson and the marlboro man.

i sat 3rd row center for Ratt, Britny Fox & KIX (maybe like '87ish) and even spoke with ratt live on the radio earlier in the day of the show. still have a guitar pick from KIX from that show.
One of my favs.
Saw them at the Stone in SF, remember Michael Smith was there. Cool to hear about these guys. Back in early 90's when I suppose glam was still in but going out. No DD there 😮 but I have one of his guitar picks
That whole Philly/South Jersey crew had the rock world take notice at one point.
Thank you for this. Britney Fox was one of my favorites growing up, especially the Boys in Heat album.
If its possible, can you do some research on Saraya, and other bands that were on the Shocker soundtrack?
Saraya... great band! 2 great albums!
I saw Britny Fox about 10 years ago in a small bar. Michael Kelly Smith is the the real deal. He's among the best guitar players to come out of that amazing era. Definitely under rated since he never makes any best guitar player lists. He could hold his own with any of the top names.
Boys in Heat rocked I wore so many dvds out I loved that cd.
Great video. Britny Fox were really under-rated. Those first three albums were excellent!
They are truly underated
I bought their first album. It was pretty good.
I love them
The fight between Dizzy and the others where the guitarist's arm was broken didn't happen onstage during their club tour, it was backstage when they were supporting Lita Ford with Tuff in the opening slot.
Great breakdown! Very talented. Both of you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great vid! How bout the band Dig outta California, they had a minor grunge hit with Believe in like 94 or Phantam Planet!
Great song
Great band of the day.
Story demonstrates how hard it is to make a living in a band, on the road.
I've read or heard that the record c.o fired MKS from Cinderella for not being a good enough guitarist?
Seriously ??.
He's a great guitarist, far superior skills than Jeff labar was.
Shame B.F came about a few years too late to get traction & success. I have all 3 studio cds and Boys in Heat is an awesome hard rock cd .
Loved their look and sound
The perfect Hair glam metal band.
All over my playlists!!
Back in the day, around the Philly area, we called them Britny Wigg.
“Save the Weak”
is an AMAZING song.
The song "In Motion" from Boys In Heat is amazing. I really liked Black-Eyed Susan, too.
Don't really care for GIRSCHOOL, but I'll tell ya. I still listen to Long Way To Love on a regular basis when I'm in the hair metal mood. Giddy-up guitar always wrecks me, and that song is a masterpiece. That whole album was pretty great.
NJ represent 😜
Bite down hard the best !!!
Great video, however bite down hard is by far their best album
Thanks
Tony, bless him! Yep!❤😮😊
You need to interview people that were actually there and you would get the real story
Suburbs of NJ ? Reading PA . that's funny Mike Schermick, I him, from when I was 12-14 yrs old. I have a great story about that
I said suburb of Philly
I couldn't find one song of theirs that was above average.
Check out “Louder”
I saw them in ‘88 at hammer jacks when I was 18 and thought they were old with a lot of makeup on. Some rough looking guys lol Great show
Have you done a doc on Dangerous Toys? If not, please? 😂😂
Haven’t yet
