Great video. I'm good to see one up today as I just binged everything you've posted on the TH-cam's. I got a Mamiya C33 two weeks ago and an enlarger four days ago. You've been a great help and inspiration. Thank you for all your effort, it's really appreciated.
I'd love to hear any feedback you have to offer after binge watching :) Also happy to hear you got yourself an enlarger. Hopefully you didn't overpay. Glad I could be of some help!
Good video, most Pinhole Cameras will come with 2 data sheets, (1) Exposure Calculator Chart for your pinhole size, mine is f300 and (2) Exposure correction table for Reciprocity failure of Monochrome films, having both of these sheets for your particular f-Stop will save you vast amounts of time and error. Example on my charts, you meter the scene and you get 1/60 at f8 (HP5+) this is 22 seconds at f300, add the Reciprocity factor (approximate) and you end up with 1min 24 seconds as the actual exposure.
Excellent work mate. I love pinhole as you saw when I left a link in one of your older episodes . Now it's time for the next step in every pinholers journey.... making your own pinhole camera.
Takes me back to the 80's when I did this sort of thing for a living! I see somebody has already mentioned the reciprocity factor, and it gets more important to take this into account the longer the exposure time. Now HP5 film is quite a contrasty film to start with, and push processing it will make it more so - but of course you only have what you have to work with. You can't always compensate for contrast (either way, to high or too low) by using a multigrade paper but I see you did an excellent job of doing just that in the video. Well done sir, I hope to see more!
Very cool episode, I'm also glad you went back, the image was worth it! One think you might want to look at for next time is reciprocity failure, ie you need even more time if it's a long exposure. The HP5+ data sheet has a graph for times longer than .5s (more MATH :)
I have looked at masters of pinhole photography and out of hundreds of photographs seen maybe two that were classic so don’t worry about getting one good photo if you have not done pinhole for awhile
Great video Azriel! :) It was really interesting seeing the results from the pinhole camera. I'm glad you took that second trip out to get that image, it turned out awesome.
Enjoyed you going this direction. About 5 years ago I shot some 4 x 5 Tmax 400 with a Speed Graphic I had at the time. Like youself I learned a bit the hard way. Light leaks at the film holder. Didn't have a meter so I was guessing. And when I made contact prints in the darkroom I had put the negative upside-down. But when I saw the result it was kinda neat in an "old fashioned" way. Recently I was thinking of returninf to the same areas to duplicate the shots, given changes, and knowing a little more. As a side not: To make larger prints, I would sandwhich the negative between two pieces of lexan to fit into the back of the camera and remove the rear glass than with som space, mount the back of the camera the the lens stage. Lense stage allowed for from light control, and the camera bellows were where I would focus Not perfect but it wasnt too bad, with some inherent clipping.
Glad to see some large format stuff! It would be really cool if in the future you did some more large format stuff with a Graflex or something! I love how shooting large format really slows down the process and makes you think about every aspect of exposure and composition! Expensive film will do that too you!
That was a great tutorial/watch n learn post, Azriel. Thanks! I’m starting a pinhole and lomography project soon and picking up little pieces of information as I learn. I have an old brownie that will allow me to do large format Pinole shots and I’m excited to try it now that I’ve seen this. Cheers from Australia (Via Kingston Ontario ). Carolyna
Thanks Jose. A couple other people mentioned this too. I did not take reciprocity into account but my final image was between 2 and 4 seconds so I don't think I need any there. Will definitely have a chart with me for future exposures. Thanks man :)
Fantastic video AZK! Man I love your darkroom montages so much. Results were also fantastic! I'm still waiting on my 4x5 in the post but man you have me super excited to give it a go!
I am so impressed with your results. I've got a Zero Image 6x9 and a NOON Panoramic, both beautifully made, but sadly, I have yet to master the exposures.
I did two shots of 4x5 ektachrome 64t in a Paterson tank a few months ago with stunning results. I guess luck? But oh my god slide film that big blows you away man! To bad ill ford no longer make direct positive slide enlargement paper anymore!
Nice one, Azriel. Just when I thought the episode was going to end, you went back out. Lots of good info.. Really great. About Liam's podcast. I follow a few podcasts and, after Liam's last appearance on the show, I added is podcast to my podcast manager' list. It plays the podcasts automatically as they arrive so forgot about it. Today, when I started playing my podcast list in my car, there were your talking. For a moment I didn't understand what was happening, why was a TH-camr on my radio? After a few moments it came to my mind Liam's podcast... It was really really early in the morning, one was to understand...
Sergio, I hope you enjoyed the podcast, and I'm glad you liked this episode. I like the idea of podcasts and should subscribe to more of them. What do you use to manage your subscriptions?
I did enjoyed the podcast. I knew some of your story with undeveloped films, but not all of it. For instance, I didn't knew that Fox News got to you, eh eh. I use BeyondPod android app for some years now, I believe I used it with Android 2.x... It is a great app. You can enter the podcast RSS link directly or you can search they (good) podcast database. I have it set to automatically update the feed twice a day and to auto download the episode as they are available. 90% of my driving is made listening to podcasts.
What a lovely manner you have. I’m tempted to try this on the basis of your honesty. I have a pinhole lens for my Fuji which is great fun but it feels like cheating compared to the real thing.
Really dig your vibe, man! This is my first time seeing your content and I like it. One suggestion would be to add some soft background music to keep the video flowing well.
This is your channel at its very best, you taking us all on your highs and lows of a learning curve. Really enjoyed every second of it, and I’m really pleased for you that you found your way through. Do you watch Steve O'Nions channel? He has a pinhole he takes out from time to time. Great video, all round.
Thanks very much Mark. I'm learning the hard episodes to make are the ones people love to watch. I just subbed to Steve's channel as per your suggestion and will keep an eye out.
How did you get your thumb in the scene :DD. One think for the volume. usually , I prepare 510ml for my Jobo which is suppose to take 450. First reason is, it makes calcs dillution very easy (Rodinal 1+50) and second, i make sure everything is covered with developer.
Ah gotcha. My father in law has this all over the world in the 70's and it outlasted my entry level manfrotto. Only now are some of the joints in the legs not holding.
It sounds like you're going to have some fum with this camera. I got into photography back in 1969. My first large format camera I bought in 1973, and in 1975 I bought my second large format camera. Years ago I built my own 4x5" pinhole camera with a normal focal length and the f/stop was f/360. I have developed 4x5" film in steel hangers and have also just used trays. Consult Ansel Adam's book on the negative. What city do you live in?
Thanks for the question. I do use running water. I used the water tray for my strip tests, which are garbage, then when I made my set up 15 I made them 3 at a time, with running water at the end. Immersed in a shallow bath and interchanging them under the tap, which I have a shower head attached. The few times I've used fiber I used hypo to cut down on my washing time.
Very cool. I had a 4x5 pinhole. And I have to admit I regret selling it. Mine was a bit different though since it was more of a portrait "lens" then a wide angle. Something that might be worth considering is I always used to develop my negatives in trays like when you make darkroom prints. Much simpler. I even accidentally developed one in Dektol paper developer once.
Cool vid Azriel. Like any type of photography, you need time to master pinhole photography , you can get very creative with this. My first pinhole camera was also a 4x5 camera but honestly I way prefer using a 120 format pinhole camera. I use the ZeroImage Zero 2000 Nature (you can find this on my youtube channel). Keep it up! and hoping to see more of your pinhole work :)
Thanks very much! Overall I enjoyed the experience. I need some more film holders for sure. I subbed to your channel, I'll keep an eye out for new vids :)
One day ill have a basement style darkroom i hope, i set up a bed and a food storage area and just live down there almost haha my wife would be happy with that too haha!
A couple of things. First, how can you have lens flare if you don't have a lens? In addition to long exposure times, the resolution of pictures taken with a pinhole camera will be limited because of diffraction. If you have a 0.5 mm pinhole, the light has a wavelength of around 500 nm, and the film is around 0.1 m from the hole then I calculate a diffraction limited spot size of around 0.1 mm (hopefully I did my math right.) So even though your negative is huge, that is still the best resolution you will get. Still I bet it is fun to play with and if the negatives are expired anyway it isn't much of a waste. But even a really cheap lens will give you better resolution.
It would be more accurate to say there's no glass, rather than no lens, even though by definition there is none. A hole flair then? To be it was lens flair because it didn't extend beyond the frame of the negative. Thanks for the feedback.
fun channel...thanks for sharing...hopefully your also making great work with all the fun toys you find, after all thats what this is all about. Gerry (Edmonton)
No problem Nancy, I try to reply to everything. Too soon to act like a rockstar with only 3k subs :P I'll link the calculator but I don't think it does what you think it does. I used it to calculate 2 existing f numbers to see the difference and not to determine the f number itself. So like, how many stops between f8 and f22 for example. imaginatorium.org/stuff/stops.htm
LOL "Too soon to act like a rockstar with only 3k subs". I see what you mean about determining the stops. I'm just gathering all the tools I can to make my pictures somehow more predictable. Greetings from Costa Rica.
LF is very attractive to dust. What you see there is dust. Also, the holder placed on the camera like that and you walking with it under the sun, does not help. You have to seal every little seam.
great episode man. I also want to develop and print by myself one day (even if it is just for the experience and not really having a darkroom myself) awesome that you got my mail. (I am angelo) hopefully soon you will get some rolls to test that I sent you. can't wait to put my hands on that 4x5. ;) oh, by the way, when are coming live again on instagram?
Hey man, thanks again for the pics! Developing on your own is incredibly rewarding. My next instagram live is I don't now :( I like the idea of live but committing to the same time each week may be tricky. I'm supposed to be live on twitch on the regular as well. I may just have to announce a time and commit to it.
Azriel Knight really? I bought one at a Saver's thrift shop for $14 or so. I'm giving it away as a birthday gift to a friend. It was missing a screw for the tilt head but I fixed it.
Azriel Knight me too ! I scan 4x5 ALL THE TIME. I have a way to do it. Do you own a 3D printer? I was watching your channel last night while building a pinhole camera.
You had me laughing when you mentioned aperture and pinhole camera in the same sentence. I take it from that there is a piece of glass/plastic on the front of the box. I also presume it is neither convex or concave. Have a go with a shoebox and some photographic paper with literally a pinhole in it next time. I know someone that made one out of a matchbox using individual frames of 35mm film, shots came out quite well. Yes. I do think you were way too hard on yourself; you got a printable shot out of the first four, serious congrats; shows serious darkroom skills. The problem with pinhole is that it becomes seriously addictive.
So basically you are lazy and don't want to take the time to do things right. As the old saying goes "if it ain't broke don't fix it". You not only didn't fix anything but screwed it up trying to take short cuts.
People think the death of the old knowledge of photography will be with miss informed YT videos, but no, it's right here, in the comments section where you'll find old farts tech savvy enough to use a keyboard, but not a video camera, and smart enough to understand film, but not social interaction.
Great video. I'm good to see one up today as I just binged everything you've posted on the TH-cam's. I got a Mamiya C33 two weeks ago and an enlarger four days ago. You've been a great help and inspiration. Thank you for all your effort, it's really appreciated.

Excellent video and what a fantastic result - that last one. Atb, from a UK follower.
Thanks Russell
Excellent work mate. I love pinhole as you saw when I left a link in one of your older episodes . Now it's time for the next step in every pinholers journey.... making your own pinhole camera.

I am thinking now I would like to buy some fresh 4x5 sheet film and do this again. I was happy with the result.
Azriel Knight you could also try making some paper negatives! You miss out on some color but i think it looks nice!
That was a great tutorial/watch n learn post, Azriel. Thanks!

Thanks! Good luck on the project!
Great episode. looks like a really good exposure too. You should try a paper neg of the same view. You get really amazing blacks and contrasts.
Pardon me but I didn't catch upon if you took reciprocity failure into account while taking your readings? Just wondering. Awesome content :)
Thanks Jose. A couple other people mentioned this too. I did not take reciprocity into account but my final image was between 2 and 4 seconds so I don't think I need any there. Will definitely have a chart with me for future exposures. Thanks man :)
I thought that too..... But what a result :-)
You might try the Zone system for exposure, this will help you to determine the negative development time. - good vid.
Thanks! I did end up selling this though. Kind of regret it now.
Fantastic video AZK! Man I love your darkroom montages so much. Results were also fantastic! I'm still waiting on my 4x5 in the post but man you have me super excited to give it a go!
You mean the 8x10 you purchased? Not there yet? I guess it's only been 9 business days, so any day now.
Intrepid 4x5 for me actually. It's somewhere actually in the mail now so yep hoping it's only a matter of days.
silly me I thought you were talking about the darkroom print you bought on my Etsy page.
Oh haha no but I did receive the print and it's fantastic!
I am so impressed with your results. I've got a Zero Image 6x9 and a NOON Panoramic, both beautifully made, but sadly, I have yet to master the exposures.
Lee, don't be hard on yourself, I screwed up plenty and probably fluked the last frame :P
I did two shots of 4x5 ektachrome 64t in a Paterson tank a few months ago with stunning results. I guess luck? But oh my god slide film that big blows you away man! To bad ill ford no longer make direct positive slide enlargement paper anymore!
I didn't even think they made side that big. Now I'm curious!
Once you try it you won't be able to stop. You can still get velvia and provia in 4x5
Nice one, Azriel. Just when I thought the episode was going to end, you went back out. Lots of good info.. Really great. About Liam's podcast. Great video and very informative, we learn from our mistakes (and others).
Thanks Michael!

Would try with paper film, like you did in a previous video ? in the film holder.
What is the maximum negative size for your enlarger? I have a beseler 6x7.
Zack. I have a beseler 23c. I'll have to check the manual.
How did you get your thumb in the scene :DD. One think for the volume. usually , I prepare 510ml for my Jobo which is suppose to take 450. First reason is, it makes calcs dillution very easy (Rodinal 1+50) and second, i make sure everything is covered with developer.
This makes me want to try pinhole photography. Added bonus, I have the same old heavy tripod.
Really? It says K-Mart on it?
Looks the same but not K-Mart, mine it's a Velbon brand.
Ah gotcha. My father in law has this all over the world in the 70's and it outlasted my entry level manfrotto. Only now are some of the joints in the legs not holding.
Azriel, you need to look at a 'Mod54' dev rack for Paterson tank, (larger 1litre).
Love your channel. It would be awesome to see you testing these films (washi s50 and argenti contrasto 200)
Thanks for the tip. I've never heard of those.
It sounds like you're going to have some fum with this camera. I got into photography back in 1969. My first large format camera I bought in 1973, and in 1975 I bought my second large format camera. Thanks Lonnie but I ended up selling it,
Love the eighties educational music dude! Nice video too 😃
Thanks Darren :)
Hey Azriel... do you not use running water for your final wash in the darkroom? Just curious. What do you do for fiber prints?
Thanks for the question. I do use running water. I used the water tray for my strip tests, which are garbage, then when I made my set up 15 I made them 3 at a time, with running water at the end. Immersed in a shallow bath and interchanging them under the tap, which I have a shower head attached.

Thanks for the tray tip Daniel. I think in the future I may consider it if I am going to do multiple negatives.
I think you have the exact same tripod I had. Velbon?
yes!
Great video, Azriel! Really enjoyed it
Thank you :)
I'm having a hard time experimenting with a multipinhole camera. I made a 5 hole one and a 12 hole one and haven't been able to expose them right.
Don't know if I can help you with that. sorry :(
Love the final image on this one!
Thanks. I don't even remember which it was :P
Cool video. I had a very similar 4x5 pinhole. I ended up selling it. But I have a medium format model in the mail.
Thanks Daniel. I haven't seen you in awhile! Glad you are still subbed!
@@AzrielKnight Thanks. Took a break from social media for awhile but I am definitely still here. Also thinking about starting a channel of my own.
I don’t know anything about photography but I want to do this so bad!! Thanks for the vid!!!!!
lol, glad I could help?
Love the MATH.

Thanks very much! Overall I enjoyed the experience. I need some more film holders for sure. I subbed to your channel, I'll keep an eye out for new vids :)
Superb video!
Thanks so much :)
Nice Azriel, really enjoyed this episode :-)
Thanks brummer :)
Could you please, very kindly, tell me who manufactured your pinhole camera ? Many thanks.
Not really sure as I bought it used. I found this though www.freestylephoto.biz/345-Leonardo-4x5-Wood-Pinhole-camera-(3-in.-focal-length)
This video is awesome! Nice work!
Thank you Jeffery!
One day ill have a basement style darkroom i hope, i set up a bed and a food storage area and just live down there almost haha my wife would be happy with that too haha!

A good way to develop that film is to use trays in the dark instead of doing it in a tank. You can do more at a time 😊
I considered that but then I can't film myself doing it :)
fun channel...thanks for sharing...hopefully your also making great work with all the fun toys you find, after all thats what this is all about. Gerry (Edmonton)
Thanks!
Love it. Learned a lot. Thanks.
Really happy you enjoyed it :)
How do you know what F does your camera have? I made the holes pretty perfect with a #16 sewing needle.
In my case I checked the camera company website.
Thanks for getting back to me n_n I wasn't expecting it. You said in the video you found an online calculator, could you please share that link?
No problem Nancy, I try to reply to everything. Too soon to act like a rockstar with only 3k subs :P
I'll link the calculator but I don't think it does what you think it does. I used it to calculate 2 existing f numbers to see the difference and not to determine the f number itself. So like, how many stops between f8 and f22 for example.

It's a mid 1970's K-Mart tripod ;)
Azriel Knight oh. But it looked like one I thought
I googled it, very similar!
Azriel Knight really? I bought one at a Saver's thrift shop for $14 or so. I'm giving it away as a birthday gift to a friend. It was missing a screw for the tilt head but I fixed it.
Yeah I can't speak to the quality of mine, but I guess if it survived 40 years that's something!
what scanner do you have ??????
V500
Azriel Knight me too ! I scan 4x5 ALL THE TIME. I have a way to do it. Do you own a 3D printer?
I was watching your channel last night while building a pinhole camera.
ooh i see you are using a tripod that looks like a velbon ve-3 tripod. i loved mine until i broke the leg in half lol
Actually, that's a K-Mart brand tripod. :) You're not the first to mistake it though.
Very cool. Thanks.
No, thank you Merlin ;)

Thanks for the compliment. I'd like to try large format again in the future but I ended up selling this camera.
Also, reciprocity.
Phone App: "Pinhole Assist" works well
Someone else mentioned this app but I couldn't find it on my android.

Love your channel! I also love Fox News, like most people (they are the highest rated by a wide margin). I suggest you try The Greg Gutfeld Show.

As apposed to a time where someone should not practice? :P
f250! 🤣
I know right!
Man you are all over the place. You need to focus and perfect one thing. Otherwise 5 years from now your skills will be where they are now.
I respectfully disagree.
Nice new episode! I’m excited to see more large format stuff soon!
Thanks very much!
Great video!
Thanks very much :)
