I think also the recession will play a big part in the prices of hot watches in 2020. I think that outside of Rolex, Patek and AP, we will see cheap cheap prices for watches like Panerai, Breitling and IWC. In your opinion, when would be the best time to buy a watch? Oct-Nov before the Christmas and holidays shopping or Jan-Feb after the frenzy has passed?

I started collecting watches 10 years ago, mostly vintage Seiko.
I stopped collecting vintage Seiko last year because the prices were getting crazy.
That's just Seiko, Rolex is mad!
This year I've been buying more high end pieces.
Bought myself a Tudor black bay steel, vintage Omega Cal 1040 yachting chronograph and a couple of weeks ago a Omega master coaxial 300.
I bought these because I loved them, not because I wanted to make a profit.
This seems to be the motivation for most so called watch collectors.
The watch investors are to blame for the price rises, not the collectors.
We are in it for the enjoyment of watches.

I agree, I got "Jumped On" when I said the same thing. Rolex were trying to deliberately make their pieces "Exclusive" by limiting supply so they could take down Patek as number 1. It's come back to bite them big time. A lot of people who overpaid for Rolex recently will end up with a big hole in their pockets.

I agree, the prices that Rolexes are reselling for now are super inflated; but as long as you're not paying over retail (for stainless steel sports models) I think Rolex is still a safer bet than the brands he mentioned. That's if you're concerned about resale value. Otherwise just buy what you want and keep it. IWC? Panerai? Those brands are weak.

I don't know about abroad but into the U.K. the used and grey market dealers are certainly pulling back. They are refusing to pay the ridiculous prices the flippers are asking. The flippers have created the situation whereby everyone wants full market, or very close to, prices for whatever they are selling. Flippers have no expenses, including taxes! Dealers can't survive with the margins that flippers are happy to force them to take.
Let the greedy swines sell on the open market and deal with all the scammers. After all the PayPal chargebacks and bank transfer tricks not to mention outright thefts they will make nothing in comparison to selling to dealers at a fair price.

Rolex is a Big money item, not for the financially weak dealers. If the dealers don't buy Rolex now, they won't make any money , come the holidays . Observe how the prices rise come Nov. and Dec.

Yes, good deals on other brands... but Rolex is Rolex... fact is it is the coolest brand out there... and there are plenty fair priced rolex in the second hand and vintage market out there... so what if the there are waiting lists on certain sports models, when there is plenty other models/references available at close to list price (ie airking, djs, mailgauss, sub etc)... some models are even under list(precious metals)... I dont understand the hate... Rolex is never going to be mass produced as its not owned by a umbrella corporation like most other brands...

I really like the Rolex hype because i was able to pick up some nice omegas for good price. But what i am seeing now, the dealers pumped up the prices and the hype to make more money and now crying there is not enough profit. So everybody should turn to other brands ,because they want to make more money with less work.Aham.

  • @masterg7895

Here in Israel everyone is buying Rolex from dealers, it's crazy all i hear about is people buying nothing but Rolex. I know soooo many young men who can barely afford a nice car or any type of luxury that fell into the hype and in a couple years to come i see a huge crash in prices where all those dumb losers will be trying to get rid of them, anyone who knows a little about economy can feel that this is a bubble just like any other, it is just so unnatural for such a boom in Rolex buyers who at the same time consider if to fill a full tank of gas or just half. Wear what you love, people.
