Hi Jason. Thanks for the message. Appreciate your courage. Thank you again. I feel the all embracing RESPECT has been replaced by irresponsible racist echo of TOLERANCE. This racists echo of tolerance have been used so widely , from the topmost politicians that it has become so common. I hope and pray that leaders will use inclusive and embracing terms like Respect to nurture equality and unity in our country instead of the negative term of tolerance which automatically establishes a divide. I just TOLERATE you. Sad. Thank you Jason for your message...laud and clear this morning.
Thanks for the elucidation on racial discrimination, Jason. As we hop on the bandwagon, we often overlook (sometimes, intentionally) the domestic discrimination that is happening. Hopefully, people will acknowledge, or have a better understanding of their own racial privileges and empathise with others - when we are blind to our privileges, we cannot fathom why others behave in a completely different way. To that, I agree that communication and interaction with the minorities, as well as having meaningful discussions on this topic are good ways of bridging the divide
Compare 30-40 yrs ago, everyone watches the same TV channel, listen to same radio channel. We watch and listen to what is come along, either in English, Malay, Indian or Chinese song/movie. Most of us go to Sekolah Kebangsaan with different races. Now we can choose to see and listen to what we want. I feel that make us more divided.
I love this message, Jason. As a brown international student living here in Malaysia for the past 4 years, I have witnessed small instances of racism here and there too. But once I start talking to them and they start talking to me these pre-existing assumptions slowly crumble. I have met Hindu friends who absolutely used to hate Muslims and now sometimes even go to jumuah with them (not to pray, just to hang out afterwards). I have had extremely close friends of mine come out of the closet and be thrown out of their homes, but now their parents have accepted the undeniable and live happily together. Discussion is key. I hope I live to see the day Malaysia breaks down these walls of intolerance between people of different backgrounds. That day this country would be a force to be reckoned with.
Good morning Jason. Your 7 to 8 minutes video is fantastic. I pray whoever watch it, will be eye and ears opening to them. About making friends with others races is a first step to friendship. Whether they accept me as a friend does not matter but my feeling is I am not a racist. Thank you. Looking forward to your new episode. 😊
I truly, truly appreciate your message in this video. It really means a lot that you're addressing such issues in a positive and open way. It's really refreshing to hear someone speak on this and your solution was quite a nice one and one that can be done with some growth and effort. Love you as always and well wishes to you and your family!
there is a hierarchy of racism in Malaysia. Light Brown to Yellow to Dark Brown to Migrants. Everyone steps on the "level" below them. Making friends is definitely the start. But eventually, we will all have to stand up against the entrenched political establishment built on racism.

Thanks for this timely reminder Dr Jason. Excellent points made. I certainly hope that as a human race, together we shall move forward to seeing each other as brothers and sisters and not let our differences divide and segregate us
Jason, you have taken a very serious problem in Malaysia, dissected it and presented it beautifully. Congratulations. It is the truth of what the country has become. Racism & Religion have divided the country for the silliest of reasons and believes. This divide comes from politicians and religious leaders who have lost the plot to ignorance. About time every Malaysian takes this opportunity to see the person who is of a different race and religion as a fellow human being. It is human to make a mistake but please make use of the numerous opportunities available to get to know one from a different race. It will be an enlightening experience 😇
Very nice of your opinion . I have spent time in Malaysia n Singapore racism have existed for generations. In 2016 I was in Penang and got to be driven around by an Indian taxi chauffeur . The most satisfying service I can ever get!!
That makes you a mercenary. The house is just another investment property to you and you would never stay in there Unfortunately not everyone has 2 or more houses. How about african?
Hi Jason, I might came a cross your video quite late but, thank you for this video. Racism in this country is not one sided but truly a problem in all of us. You changed my view and my perception on you, and to be honest, this is an honest view and also I appreciate that we kinda have to admit, we all have a problem, and not being flatly being denial and hypocrite without addressing the elephant in the room. Thank You.

But ironically, this pandemic make us united to help each other regardless of race and religion issue. I hope this unity will still continue even though the pandemic is over. Wish you guys the best. Peace from Indonesia. 🙏
right before you mention about having a gay friend, i was having the exact same expression about your "making friends with them" in my mind. i remember how i was feeling about gay people before i know one of my close friend is gay, and how big the impact was to me emotionally when he came up to me, 'don't ask me if i will ever get married again, angie was actually angus, no one were too shy to show up in front of my friends, just that i was never ready to tell everyone im gay.' that totally changed my view to nearly everything. i am already not an angry guy who "hate" gay people, but still, i could feel that how much i was influenced by the stereotypes .... totally speechless when you face the same situation. i was feeling embarrassed, and shame about how much gay jokes i made in front of him, i feel sorry and wanna hide my face before my hands.
We are born of different races, raise up in different cultures but there is a universal value among us, justice, fairness, abhorance against cruelty,.. Most racism become a problem when the politicians in respective races started to harp on the sensitivities, stir and breed hatred, entrenching it over time, over generations. In our country, it still can be salvaged as we practice tolerance and try to put ourselves in other's shoes, to appreciate each other and enjoy the company of differences. Let us consciously say no to extremism from religious people, and politicians.
In Malaysia, with institutionalized policy and racial politics, it will just diverge further. So what if you have friends of all the other races, because of the selfish nature of humans, racial politics, which is the easiest politics to play in Malaysia, will drive us all apart.

Banana has been utterly abused in malaysia. 'Oh i cant speak chinese or read chinese, i am banana', and proudly so. Please lah, as long as you act like chinese, know chinese customs and tradition, speak fluent or some chinese dialects, act like chinese macam yam sing and etc.....you are NOT banana. Dr Jason Leong, you are NOT just a doctor or comedian but a TRUE human being with a clear understanding of humanity not race, color, religion, creed, sexual orientation. Your narratives on racial discrimination and how to overcome such practices are practically possible but there is falsely inbreed believe of this supremacy bullshit that prevalent in most countries. This is very evident in Malaysia and elsewhere. Actually, you can easily classify Malaysia as an officially an apartheid state !! Malaysia is one level higher than what it was in South Africa. Meaning of apartheid "policy or system of segregation or discrimination on grounds of race". In Malaysia religion is added as a bonus.
Just would like to share a story of an ex co-worker. I used to have a co-worker, everyone called him the man child. He's a product of some foreign Military School. He was short but very bulky with muscles. In the office he had his set of daily routines pumping, sit ups and etc. One fine day, the whole team went for some event and I was left with him to mend the fort. His table was just beside me, I was so busy with my noebook and heard the squeaky sound of that man child playing with his chair. Yet again. Out of a sudden bam and my table rattled. When I turned to look at the man child, he was with the chair lying on the floor. To cover up he quickly rolled and started pumping. I had to hold my laughter, took my nptebook and ran to the nearest meeting room, locked the door and 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
now that i think about it i have friends from country like india, singapore, usa, china, taiwan, japan and pakistan. i have never feel so greatful in my life
Ask any common citizens on the street, and you will find most of them are not racist in nature or at least doesn't shown signs of racism when conversing with other races..but its a big difference when it comes to the real culprit..the POLITICIANS who have nothing better to offer except play racial issues for their own political survivor..Fanning racial sentiments is their full time job , far from what they are supposed to do in return for people voting for them..their services..In my humble opinion, its no use introducing anti party hopping laws if the main essence of humanity and living as fellow earthlings in harmony cannot be achieved in the first place...I think they should enact an anti racial law where it is illegal to discriminate anyone of any particular race..The world or at the very least, Malaysia will be the best place to live in the world..God Bless Malaysia.
I mixed with Indian friends in my childhood. Even my church friend is an Indian. Work time I mixed with Malay and Indian colleagues. And I hate my parents always use racism words in their words.
The community pressure is still too much especially from the Malay community. The rot starts from the head. Stop the rot from the head and other racism aspects will improve over time.
You're entitled to your opinion, but in Malaysia, life today is unlike what it was before independence. That's because for 60 years we were governed by a government which uses racism as its political weapon or sorts. Instead of trying to unite a multiracial country, it became so much more convenient to rule by division. Furthermore, all their efforts concentrated not on bringing the country to the present day but to ensure certain quarters stay backward and remain chained to their disadvantages when compared to others. Unfortunately the same sick rhetoric has been in use for decades so much so it has become the "truth" even when it can be seen as fake news.
I remember how they had seminars in uni about the goal of malaysia.... to tolerate but not amalgamate... this speaker was so proud of himself spreading arnd this garbage...
@@linustw In fact this true. The British divided us so that they were able to exert control. Since the difference between kampung people and town folk in those days were very marked, they had to device different techniques psychologically and physically to maintain their power so tin and rubber basically belongs to them. The Japanese occupation also hired local Malays as their drivers, liaison and other labour force, never the Chinese for fear of sabotage in view of Chinese affiliation to Chiang khai shek.
So true... I think you can be Dr in sociology also d.. Baru first level.. Already can see the racial discrimination.. Haven step into politics and working situations all yet.. 😂😂
we should ask traditional doctors to come help, because when you are too heaty, you will easily get angry, and spread the racisms like a fire. when you cure the heatiness inside, the spreading of these kind of negative energy all goes away, the world is wonderful again.
An ignorant person’s reply for this is like “ oh i know a person from a different race (from work), so i cant be racist.. this video is for some other people..” Yes you. YOU. This video is for you.
We need to call out racism in all forms and ny everyone including our own as Chinese. We also need to call out racism by Malays, Indians, and everybody else. It's true that friendship makes us understand one another.
Jason Leong Look forward to see u pick up the challenge.. don’t expect bahasa baku but the style u and ur neighborhood spoken before.. I m sure strike to many of Malaysian heart
when even businesses in our country are divided by race, what more can we say about racism. take the hairdressing industry in Malaysia as example. There are the Bumiputera Hairdressing Association (BUHA), Bumiputera Barbers Association (MBBA), Malaysian Indian Hairdressing Association (MIHASS), Malaysian Indian Hair Dressing Salon Owners Association (Mindas) and Federal Territories Indian Hairstylists' Association (PJRISWP). I'm glad to say that i've a mix of friends from the 3 major race and also from east malaysia. We've even travelled overseas together. my Malay friends would not stop us from eating non-halal food and would even remind us not to tell them what food is halal or non halal.
Aside from individuals trying to make friends outside their race, policies should also definitely encourage more mingling. A lot of racist people (I'm Chinese so most that I met are Chinese naturally), simply don't have exposure and are only exposed to one type of media. I know some that can't speak Malay, not because of any prejudice, but they simply never had to. They were only exposed to other races when they enter society to work. By then, it is very easy to fall into the trap of seeing racism against your own race and then react in the worst way possible by becoming racist yourself. Because of a shared hobby, I also have the opportunity to hang with a very Malay crowd, many of whom rarely or never mix with other races. At first it was awkward, but then I genuinely became friends. Can't say there is no tension whatsoever, and I can tell there are racists among them by their social media posts, posts that I would never have been exposed too if I never met this group of people. The issue is not just due to personal choices, but also policies and systems that in many ways, encourage racial bubbles to form. Many politicians also try to divide people. You can easily tell the bad ones from their statements. If they always say divisive things, you know they have an ulterior motive. Aside from making friends (which is great, and very often rewarding, if not enlightening experience), we should also speak out against the system that encourages racism perpetuated by those that take advantage of a divided Malaysia.
Our political system adapts the design by our coloni masters, the British allowed racial and religious based parties and allowed racial segregation in education system . So you can see is malaysia heading to complete polarization instead of assimilation like Indonesia, filipina or Thailand.
And they are blaming the british for divide and rule. But in all fairness thai philippine indo and other ASEAN countries all blend to become ONE main culture. Its monotonous. Whereas as what we are today, distinct identification, we can sell the tagline of "malaysia, truly asian'. Our current culture is more colourful and attractive.
i got malay and indian friends, and its easy for me to get furious when my chinese relatives say something racist and is acceptable within the chinese circle,so much ignorance about a race that they would tie crimes and horrible actions of certain people to the entire race and religion, the ultimate stupidity
@@linustw its something they need to see for themselves to really understand, and also 'grownups' dont listen to 'kids' coz they usually have an ego to not listen to people they don't respect that much
Sometimes its not about race or racism but we often judge a person base on the trails of race. Eg. Will a malay landlord rent a house to chinese or non malay? Same thing with smoker. If i dont want my house to smell like ashtray, i wont rent out to smoker. So what that makes me? Cigarettism?
Thank you Dr Jason, very insightful and with lot of truth.
Thank you for being honest. You are brave and we need more people like you .

Veyr well said Dr. Jason. Spoken in the most respectful manner.
I think corruption is a bigger issue than racism in this country. There are lots of poor Malays everywhere even after receiving so many privileges. The corruption of our Malay politicians and their lavish lifestyles are a world of difference from many other honest hardworking ordinary Malays we see on the street.
Both are issue. Eradicating corruption and racism goes hand in hand.
Truly heartwarming stuff Jason. Sending love to all our fellow Malaysians who are more used to hate.

The white flashing transitions seem a bit overdone. Maybe just a cut will do better?
Thanks for the feedback!
agree xD
well said, couldnt agree more and having friends from other races does open ur mind up
The local racist issue is mainly the doing of national policy!
You should be an agent of change. However small, this is one small step that we can contribute
And they are blaming the british for divide and rule.
What a hypocrisy.....
WE SEE RACISM TRULLY CLEAR WHEN WE IN PH' POWER..
A TRULLY COMEDIAN IN MAKING..
Well said....this is how I felt living in msia and being a chindian too.
Sometimes when they ask what race are you....hmmm how to answer?
Jason...you speak hokkian very clear especially when yelling cibay or lanciaw 👍
At least Law in USA is equal for all in USA.
When a country has laws for one race and one for others, how to achieve equality?
Nobody is born a racist. They learn to be one.
Nicely said
Indeed well said!
Well said Bro.
we should ask traditional doctors to come help, because when you are too heaty, you will easily get angry, and spread the racisms like a fire. when you cure the heatiness inside, the spreading of these kind of negative energy all goes away, the world is wonderful again.
Thank you for this. How do I get the tickets for the live show ye. It's at 9pm tonight right? Could someone help please. Thank you!
An ignorant person’s reply for this is like “ oh i know a person from a different race (from work), so i cant be racist.. this video is for some other people..”
Yes you. YOU. This video is for you.
Every races have good and rotten apples. Just be wise to choose who to be friends with.
We need to call out racism in all forms and ny everyone including our own as Chinese. We also need to call out racism by Malays, Indians, and everybody else.
It's true that friendship makes us understand one another.
Well said 👍
Look forward to watch a malay language episode from u soon. Telling story about ur childhood story with malay neighbors.
I have been tinkering with this. Bear in mind tho my Malay not as finetuned as before.
Jason Leong Look forward to see u pick up the challenge.. don’t expect bahasa baku but the style u and ur neighborhood spoken before.. I m sure strike to many of Malaysian heart
👏👏👏👏 well said
when even businesses in our country are divided by race, what more can we say about racism. take the hairdressing industry in Malaysia as example.
Just ask if non malays can be a member of umno or bersatu can already....
If you are not malay and not muslim.
Agreed. That the first step.
What we need is a political revolution in Malaysia. Imagine if we had Bernie Sanders: Malaysia version.
Really no budget for episode 10?
most of the issues you mentioned are right, except a few. Some of the data gathered may be sampling bias
I wonder if those who dislike the video because it was different from the usual light-hearted fare…🤔🤔🤔
Well said Jason
well said doctor.
i got malay and indian friends, and its easy for me to get furious when my chinese relatives say something racist and is acceptable within the chinese circle,so much ignorance about a race that they would tie crimes and horrible actions of certain people to the entire race and religion, the ultimate stupidity
Its your duty to educate them.
Very true 🙏
My Indian brother in law said even he doesnt rent to indians. My Kadazan wife said it should be ok what. So how?
