2 important points: 1. This method won't work if your VM has snapshots. You will have to remove all the snapshots before following this video. A short guide on deleting snapshots - th-cam.com/video/7BbmAm9Dn1k/w-d-xo.html 2. If, after inserting the ISO file to the virtual optical drive the VM loads the normal operating system (instead of the live session from the ISO), rapidly press on the 'F12' key repeatedly as soon as the VM starts loading. This will load the boot menu, where you can press on the 'c' key to start from the virtual CD-ROM.
Thank you for saying about it not working if your VM has snapshots! Been though multiple tutorials and couldn't figure out why till I saw this comment. For future people, you can just clone the VM to keep the content as a backup and have all the snapshots go. Then expand the hard drive and then use snapshots again on your clone.
bro, i cannot tell you how many countless hours i was looking for a method to increase disk size...this is the only one that has worked. thank you so much
Perfect! For those who are not being able to force run first the mounted cd from when you start the machine, press F12 just after the machine starts and then press "c" (in my case was the right choice to run properly". Then it should work just as fine as shown in the video ;)
This solved a problem I was having where my VM wasn't booting (beyond a flashing cursor) because the disk was full. Increased the disk size following these instructions and then it booted normally. Thank you!
after increasing the space, i am not able to boot my ubuntu. the error says host failed to send log message. do you know the possible solution? i do not want to reinstall ubuntu as all of my data is in the ubuntu
This doesn't work for me, when I go to 2:13 the max disk size didn't change at all. I only have one virtual machine with one disk and I confirmed multiple times in the manager that the size increased, but inside ubuntu, nothing changes. Edit: It worked after deleting all my snapshots as I've seen someone suggesting elsewhere. I have no idea why, I know for a fact that the disk change was made to the machine itself and the snapshots still had the old size... just some quirk of the software I guess.
If you are unable to start live mode due to insufficient disk space. - Only mount optical drive. Unmount hard disk - Start live mode - After you are in the vm mount hard disk and follow the gparted steps.
i have allocated space and opened live session as in the video but in gparted it doesnt provide me option to slide that extra space into my partition. The slider is already to the right but i can see my additional space still unallocated. Help kindly
I got confused because some of the settings are turned on by default. But did some tweaks and followed your video I somehow managed to increase the disk. Thank you!
Sir, i have around 220gb of free space after deleting some unused files on my VM. The previous size of .vdi file is around 340gb. How to compact it so that the free space can be used again for host OS? Lots of internet tutorial made me confused
For those who don't see the "unallocated storage", if you have snapshots you probably have to resize the disks for all the snapshots as VirtualBox combines them on startup And you should backup them all together as well
I couldn't drag the slider over in GParted after clicking my partition. This was because my ext4 sub-partition (I don't know my terms) was contained inside and also the same size as this "extended" box. So I needed to right-click the "extended" partition (in the area below the boxes) which was one line above the ext4 partition, in order to do it properly.
This video has literally saved me today .Thanks a lot for making this.I have followed many videos before but nothing worked really , showing some permission errors. But , this worked very efficiently.
Please help!! Everything went fine till 2:45 then when i tried to start its just taking me to the older ubuntu its not aksing try or install anything like that. Please help
i found the solution below : rapidly press on the 'F12' key repeatedly as soon as the VM starts loading. This will load the boot menu, where you can press on the 'c' key to start from the virtual CD-ROM.
For me it just work to resize the current Ubuntu partition with Disk Utiliity. Whoever is on Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS, I suggest you give that a try first before anything else.

Also, it looks like my disk size didn't increase. I'm guessing it has to do with whatever happened in my above comment.

Too much hassle!! Such increase/decrease shouldn't be this hard to implement 🤦
They really need to work on it
I understand but while it may take a bit of effort to implement certain features, the benefits of using VirtualBox are well worth it
