    This is actually not based on an old folk tale. The entire Heikki Lunta adventure was created by David Riutta, a musician and broadcaster in Michigan's ultra-snowy Keweenaw Peninsula. The name "Heikki Lunta" is the Finnish translation of "Hank Snow," David's favorite country singer, and it's in line with his, and the Keweenaw's, Finnish heritage, and also fits the topic perfectly.

      At this point I think we can say Heikki Lunta is a modern folk tale, along the same lines as Paul Bunyun.

      Heikki lunta is definitely elevated to status of a folk-tale now that the character has existed for 50 years with midwinter festivals and bonfires dedicated to him
