      @None of your Buisness there's a case to be made that it's an overkill cartridge in a handgun (which is reason enough for someone to want one, but let's table that). You can't seriously argue it's not a solid carbine cartridge, though.

      @@matthewmudgett7413 Or a sub machine gun. A lot of militaries stocked high pressure 9mm to give their SMG's a bit more power. Using 10mm would've given even more power and without the risk of accidently loading it into and blowing up a standard service pistol.

    HK has the habit of building over-engineered guns. I carried a P7M13 and a P7M8 for a couple of years while I was working close protection (I didn't pick them - they've been issued to me). The grip cocking feature is prone to failure due to breaking springs and what not and because of the gas delayed system it gets smoking hot in no time. Not to mention the ridiculous weight for a fairly compact pistol. What's good about it is that barrel is so close to the index finger. Helps a great deal with instinctive shooting and fast follow ups.

    Fired the P7 in 9mm NATO when stationed in Germany in the 80's and wished our army had it as an option. All the men and the female soldiers loved it and were able to hit 25 meter targets consistently. This contrasts the Beretta which is about 50/50.

      @@StevenL00 Nice bit of nitpicking there, but no. The stuff we were using was hot. Really hot, and loaded for submachineguns, so we called it NATO to differentiate it from US ammo that was loaded less powerfully. Firing 9mm NATO in weak-ass M-9's is why so many of them failed early on. P7's just kept on trucking.

    • @PltOffPPrune
      @PltOffPPrune 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@grrrlbreaker Quite right. 9mm NATO spec is slightly hotter than +P (124 grains @ 36,500 psi). In British service it was refered to as '2Z' and was definitely loaded with Sterling SMGs in mind, rather than Browning Hi-Powers.

    Love that H&K e-nickel finish. Some years ago i had a chance to buy a nickel M10 .40 at an LGS. I think they had $800 or $900 on it and were willing to take $700. I knew that was a decent price and it would hold its value, but at that point i had never paid that much for a single firearm before, so i passed. (Over the years later i would pay $1500 for an M1A Scout, nearly $800 for a Bushmaster, $700 for a Krag, and $850 for a Garand, but i digress). Later i learned that an acquaintance bought it, and flipped it in a matter of months for i think $1500. I would have kept it i'm sure. Anyway, missed opportunity. HK never seems to have been big on .45 ACP until the USP.

    Gas delayed blowback should be able to handle the bigger .45 recoil, unless there isn't enough space to fit a larger diameter pistol/cylinder to compensate .45 recoil.
    The problem may be the low pressure cannot provide enough energy to the spring to reliably drive the ejact and loading cycle after losing most energy to the gas delay process. So HK replace it with the less effective damper delay.

    Micheal Mann wanted character Sonny Crockett to own very hi-tech and very successfull guns only on the show. As the Bren Ten was discontinued, Sonny Crockett couldn't use a 'failed' weapon, thus he swap it with a S&W 456 (or 4506, I don't remember). He probably never got along with h&k about this... Even if he was doing Miami Vice 'just for the money', he had a religious approach to some creative ideas already.

    So many chances to buy the 9mm back in the day. Wish I would have. After reading about a good guy cops killed when he released squeeze and they thought he cocked gun I never wanted to carry one.

    Would the gas pressure issue have been resolved if they had made in .45 Super instead? .45ACP is rated at 21,000 PSI, .45 +P is rated at 23,000 PSI, .45 Super is rated at 28,000 PSI. 9mm is 35,000 PSI though, so maybe .460 Rowland? That's 40,000 PSI. 10mm Auto is closer to 9mm, at 37,500 PSI.
    An HK P7 in 10mm Auto. *sigh* What could have been...

    So, if that's one of the Miami Vice guns, could prepping it for on set blank shooting account for the absence of the hydraulic buffer thingy? Or would blanks still be powerful enough to cycle everything?

    The P7 is one my dream handguns before I even learned muzzle discipline when I was a kid, and it'll be always the too expensive piece of machinery even as an airsoft I'll never afford. If I stop to think about, 4 out of 5 of my dream handguns are HKs. At least I own my favorite P30

    "pushes on the slide forward which prevents it from opening" - strictly speaking it doesn't. It reduces the acceleration, and thus the speed, but the slide starts going back right away, only in this case more slowly than it would be in a simple blowback.
    Unless I'm mistaken? But I don't see how

    I assume without the hydraulic buffer the gun shown is non functional. Are any of the other examples actually operational?

  • @Psiberzerker
    @Psiberzerker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow, that's really compact for a .45. I ove the cocking lever/grip safety. That's how they get away with such a decent trigger on a "Double action." It's really a Single/Double action, but by putting the cocking mechanism in the grip safety, they can give you ALMOST a single action trigger, with all the advantages of a DAO CCW pocket pistol. (Which usually has a DAO trigger pull, like a C.O.P. .357.) Any chance they'll let you take that out to shoot it? I'm curious what the muzzle flip must be like in .45. The 9mm is a bit of a wrist twister, but it's a high velocity CCW. You kinda have to expect that.

    • @Psiberzerker
      @Psiberzerker 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      More specifically, the Market they're going for was Police CCW, not civilian. This was supposed to be like what we'd call the "Detective Special" over here. I'd assume that because of the long history of Uncle Sam insisting on a .45 for almost a century, they thought they might interest US in it. Since .45 Browning is pretty well known as "America's caliber" worldwide.

    Seems to me a .45 P7 would have taken a bite out of Glock's LE sales in the 80's, particularly with eastern US highway patrols and state police.
