It sounds like the stuff of science fiction: seven keys, held by individuals from all over the world, that together control security at the core of the web. James Ball joins a private ceremony, and finds the reality is rather closer to The Office than The Matrix

The purpose should be that no one entity has control of the system? But surely the people directly in charge of the machines doesn´t need the master key?
Even if a website doesn´t store your password, it stores a hash or something that allows it to validate the password. And if the owner wanted to, he could copy and inject the hash, get access to your account and do whatever he wanted.
It might not be easy to break into the system without the cooperation of the 7, but it must be possible if you own it.

This video drastically oversimplifies things. The keys are managed on one of several hardware security modules (HSM). In order to unlock that HSM, all of the keys must be presented. There is no hash per say to do this, the device itself is built from the ground up to be hardened and access to the HSM is governed by PKI, so you need both the private key and PIN of each smartcard to unlock the data. The laptop has no HDD, it is live booted and connected to the HSM as needed. Further, nobody in the ICANN office has the capabilities needed to access the safes on their own, as the safe itself has a combination but the keyholders each have keys to safe deposit boxes inside the safe.
While it's not impossible, it would legitimately take some james bond level sophistication and some computing capabilities not yet known to exist to get around these measures without somehow convincing 7 random people from around the planet to conspire to break things.

This video completely failed to mention why any of this is important in the slightest.
