    Thanks for all the comments and feedback! I hope that the people who need it find the information that you've provided. I do want to address a couple of things.
    First, if you do things a different way, feel free to include that in the comments. As I said in the video, my way isn't the only way. And it may not be the best way for everybody. In fact, I appreciate those of you who disagree and offer other solutions. Because, if someone is needing help and they don't find it they way I present it, they might find it in yours.
    So, why do I recommend rounding up when measuring? The most obvious answer is that it drastically reduces the chances that some postal employee along your package's journey will measure differently and create an issue for you or your customer. The less obvious answer is that most of the issues people have with shipping have nothing to do with math or measurements. The biggest issue new eBay resellers face is the overwhelming number of options and requirements when it comes to shipping. That's why so many of them choose Poshmark... it's easy... even if it isn't the cheapest. By having one simple rule that you follow all the time, "round up," it's one less thing for someone trying to find their way to have to navigate. For a lot of my viewers, easier is better.
    My goal for these tutorials is to remove the roadblocks that make doing this job an option for people. In my opinion, we build most of those roadblocks ourselves. I know that I did...and often do. I want my videos to simplify the process as much as possible. To build confidence and offer encouragement to those that need help and hope. So, I recommend rounding up with all of your weights and measurements.

    Scot, thanks for putting out all this great content. I had a question about your new channel. I remember you saying on the Tuesday night podcast a couple of weeks ago that you didn't have many subscribers. I don't know if TH-cam has an issue but no matter how I typed the channel name or your name, I couldn't find it. All I found was this channel. Maybe put links in your info section with the new channel name. Thanks!

    I want to thank you for making these videos. They are extremely helpful.
    I joined a group last year and began asking questions about shipping on occasion and some people were just really snarky about it and basically making fun of me for asking.
    I do get it. I sometimes tend to overthink things. And my questions are probably weird to them. I can see for the most part they throw the item raw in poly, guess the weight, and moved on.

    I have been buying on eBay for over 20 years. A few weeks ago, I finally found the courage to start selling on eBay. I watched tons of TH-cam videos and yours were definitely the most helpful, at least to me. Five days ago, after having a couple of listings in draft for over a week, I closed my eyes and hit the list button. 4 days later (yesterday), I made my first sale!
    I did round up the weight and size, like you suggested in all your videos, but I'm pretty sure I went overboard in trying to protect my item. The package came out to be way heavier and bigger than my initial estimate. I wanted to adjust the weight and dimensions on the eBay site, but for the life of me, I couldn't find where to the adjustment page was. I clicked on the purchase label link on the order page and the only button I saw after that was the print label button or something like that. I must have clicked on a wrong button somewhere along the line. So, I just printed the label with the wrong weight and dimensions and sent the package as it was. It's definitely a learning process. I'll have to wait until the next sale to figure out what I did wrong. I've been checking my selling page every hour or so ... that might be an understatement. People are watching, but not another bite yet! Boo.
    Anyway, I really don't think I would have even started selling without your encouragement and guidance, so thank you!
    On a side note, if I had a teacher like you when I was in school. I might have had better grades. Well, maybe. Heh!

    Hi ChaChingKing. I love your videos and have learned a lot...but I still have a question and I can't find a good answer. I'm selling Kodak Slide Trays...They measure 10x10x3 and weigh 2lbs. I have many of them. If someone orders 3 of them...that will change the calculated shipping...both the size and weight. How do I enable this function in eBay shipping?

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Great question. It should automatically adjust for the additional size and weight if they buy multiples. Make sure that if you are using a shipping policy that you state how much each additional one will cost. One other thing you could do it adjust your actual price and offer a flat shipping price. that way, there's enough wiggle room in the price to cover all (or most) of the shipping charges if someone far off buys more than one.

    Wow, great stuff. Super helpful. I would like to add that the shipping label will add a little weight to the parcel as well so do add a little more for that too.
    After photo taking I also weigh the item/s. You can also play around with some standard sized boxes just to see what their weights are. Different packing materials have different weights too so you could stuff some in the boxes to see what it all adds up to on the scale. This helps you get comfortable with it all before you dive in. Honestly, I started out with all my listings set to a 12x12x12 box and about 4.5 lbs(up here in Canada is would be 30x30x30 cm and a 2 kg weight). It was just a buffer until I got use to everything. Most items fall within range. Now I also have to say that shipping is different up here in Canada so your weight tiers are most likely different. I think you also have shipping zones which is not a thing up here, that I know of anyways. ☺

    The interior volume of a padded envelope or poly mailer is finite. This means only two dimensions -Length and Width - are needed to calculate postage. I only enter the length and width with poly mailers and flat padded envelopes. On Ebay that looks like 9x6x0 and Pirate Ship lets you select poly mailer / padded envelope or box - choose the flat one; you are given just the two dimension fields Length and Width to enter.

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I completely understand. That's not the way I've ever done it based on what I was originally told by my post office. Changing the 3rd dimension doesn't add to the cost 99% of the time. So, I put it in there.

  • @Faithique

    Thank you for the video. As others have noted, you do not round up for USPS and instead to the nearest inch. Also, your dimensons are almost always irrelevant for packages that weigh 12 ounces or less. Unless you are placing a 4 ouce in packaging that would produce a dimensional weight surcharge, your dimensions do not matter. Even if you did do that, the weight of the packaging would likely cause the item to weigh more than 12 ounces. I went to a flat rate model a yeat ago, so I don't enter any of this information when I list. If I were still using calculated shipping, i would enter 1x1x1 for any package under 12 oz. Also, in your example, that 8.3 ounce package will go at the 12 ounce rate. There is no difference in the price when using GA. If the package was 4.3 ounces, it would go at the 8 ounce rate. Likewise, a 2-ounce package would go at the 4 ounce rate.
    Once you ship a couple hundred packsges, you get a feel for things. Many things i know by feeling and looking at the size. If i have a doubt, i toss it on the scale. For larger items, i may need to measure, then add a couple of inches on each side to cover the size of the box. Maybe one in 100 packages I am off an amount that results in me paying a couple extra dollars. No biggie. 99% of the the time I am on the money or a little in my favor. Good blessings to everybody. Adjust as needed, but do not give up! Thank you.

I mean, how do you know how much bubble wrap or tissue paper, etc. you're going to use for that item? When you actually pack it up to ship out, you may end up using more packaging, which will affect your shipping weight. I am sorry to go on and on, but THAT is the one thing that is holding me back from starting to resell on Ebay.

    • @TheChaChingKing

      Practice it. Pack up one and then round up. If it comes to 1 pounds 5 ounces, round up to 2 pounds. Leave yourself some wiggle room, and you'll be fine. Anxiety often causes us to overanalyze things... to the point we don't get things done. You can do this.

      Art is truly a tough market. You have to sell yourself as much as you do the artwork. You need people to invest in YOU. So, while eBay is absolutely a viable platform to sell on, you will probably need to send traffic to your listings.
      As far as shipping, you will need to properly package your art. Given that, the basics can still get you started in the right direction.

    If you have a clothing item and it's bulky so you put it in a bigger poly mailer, but when you go to close it the flap goes farther so the poly mailer is "smaller" than the dimensions of the poly mailer, do you still need to put the dimensions of the poly mailer itself or the dimensions after it's closed and is now "smaller"? Thanks!

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You can absolutely use the smaller dimensions.

    Hey there! What if when you put a clothing item in a poly mailer and it slides around a little to where it kind if scrunches or bunches up when you lift it to measure the thickness? I hope that makes sense. That is something making me a bit nervous. I have also heard that with up to 18" for poly mailers you can just do 1" for the thickness... is that true? Have you heard that? I sell on poshmark mostly because the shipping is way less stressful for me but I have decided to crosslist so I can reach more audience. The shipping is definitely the scariest part and I feel so lost and in the dark with shipping. So scary!!! Thank you!

      I don't worry about it shifting around. It's never mattered during the process for me. What I'd recommend, instead of putting one inch is to put the approximate thickness. Then, while you're shipping, play around and add even more inches to the dimensions. See if it changes the price. If not, put the larger dimensions.

    Very helpful! How confusing is it to actually pay for the shipping label? I haven't sold on ebay in 6yrs & read labels are no longer printed through ebay/ PayPal. I'm confused 🤔

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      They are still printed right there on eBay. Ebay and PayPal have parted ways, but buying labels is essentially the same.

    I’m still confused on when we can use priority mail packaging. 😵‍💫

      @TheChaChingKing  20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You can use Priority Mail supplies for shipping Priority Mail. You can't use them for Ground Advantage or anything other than shipping Priority Mail.

    Never underestimate postage assuming that you'll just get charged afterwards. At the discretion of the delivering post office, your package may very will be delivered with postage due FROM YOUR BUYER. That is a nightmare and red donut magnet. Also, measurements aren't only important for oversized items, but in calculation for all cubic rates.

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes, and that's the reason I recommend rounding up. You'll avoid a lot of potential issues. I would never recommend just depending on the post office charging you and not being careful.

    We are having some issues with our account. We can’t find the correct number to call eBay. We would appreciate it if you know and could share eBay’s customer number.

      I don't even try to call anymore. I've had far better luck messaging eBay on Facebook. I've found them to be MUCH more helpful.

    I've been an eBay seller for only a few months, so I've been watching lots of TH-cam tutorials. You are a very nice presenter, but I have to filter much of your advice because it assumes I am selling on a large scale and managing a huge inventory. That is, your tutorials are ostensibly for beginners, but your advice assumes the seller is already a large volume seller. This is a disconnect. Best practices can sometimes vary a great deal for small, beginning sellers, than for mega sellers like yourself. It would be helpful if your "beginner" content was from the perspective of a small seller. Mega sellers probably don't need your advice.

    • @TheChaChingKing
      @TheChaChingKing  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's an interesting take. But, I'm not a mega seller. We currently have less than 400 items listed. It may seem like more because we used to be much bigger (before I started TH-cam). But we don't manage a huge inventory... unless 300-500 listings is a "huge" inventory. And perhaps it is for some. We certainly don't consider ourselves mega-sellers. Small inventory. No warehouse. No regular employees.
      Still, your point stands. You should absolutely filter everything you see and hear to make sure it fits what you're trying to do. If there's a disconnect between where we are and where you are, things may not fit... and that's OK.

    You DO NOT ROUND UP MEASUREMENTS FOR USPS!
    Not what USPS guidelines state.
    Not how PirateShip computes rates.
    USPS determines if boxes are eligible for dimensional rates by round to the NEAREST inch. That means 12.4" will be considered 12" by USPS while 12.5" is rounded up to 13".
    A 12.4" x 12.4" x 12.4" is larger than a cubic foot but it is NOT subject to dimensional rates as USPS rounds the dimensional down to 12" x 12" x 12". A package of this site sent to zone 7 would incur the rates below depending on your eBay discount settings.
    Ground Advantage Retail $19.60
    Priority Mail Retail $29.20
    Ground Advantage Commercial $12.73
    Priority Mail Commercial $22.37
    In you follow your COMPLETELY WRONG advice and round it up to 13" x 13" x 13" it will now be subject the following higher rates under a dimensional weight of 14 pounds.
    Ground Advantage Retail $39.80
    Priority Mail Retail $64.55
    Ground Advantage Commercial $21.11
    Priority Mail Commercial $43.22
    eBay's own shipping calculator tool will calculate the correct rates above by rounding to the nearest inch. eBay; however, doe snot let you enter decimal values for package dimensions and instead tells you to round up dimensions in violation of postal regulations. This is so eBay can rip its users off with inflated shipping rates.
    In the other hand Priority Mail Cubic rates dimensions are ROUNDED DOWN to the nearest quarter inch to see if the package qualifies for a pricing tier. eBay's shipping calculator tool does not round these values down as it prices the package for the next highest tier or disqualifies the package from Cubic rates. Once again eBay does not decimal values for package dimensions, which are needed to follow USPS regulations.

      Interesting and informative reply. Thank you. While I disagree with why you've said that eBay pushes rounding up, I don't disagree that they do.
      If you don't mind, I'll pin this reply for everyone to see.
