I think you handled that really well, very calm and collected. It's very easy to get stressed by buyers who seemingly don't pay attention to the details or the workings of eBay (open a case, or talk to the seller, don't just open a dispute with your payment provider). I'm convinced there should be a training course all buyers must pass before being able to buy on eBay! 😂😂
I once had a buyer buy an item from me and a very similar one from another seller. She opted to return 'them' because she'd overspent and regretted it. So I agreed to the return and issued a full refund upon receiving it back. She then went on a message barrage, INR and then onto chargeback because she wanted a refund for 'both' items. It took a very long time to explain she only bought one item from me so I could only refund her for that one and needed to contact the other seller to get refund for the other one. Exhausting sometimes.

I sold a dress for £100 on eBay. The buyer obviously wore it to an event and decided she wanted her money back because she then sent it back and it stank of cigarette smoke and perfume. She said it wasn’t as described. I posted pictures of flaws. So annoying!

So sorry you went through all that. Back in the early 80’s I collected Kinder Toys, (little toys you put together from a chocolate egg). They are sold in almost every county now, but back then they weren’t. I traded, bought and sold almost on a daily basis. I had an E-Bay and a PayPal account and had 100’s of positive feedbacks, never a negative one. Having to deal with scammers was practically unheard of.
I have a huge collection (5000+ items) that I have recently started to think about selling. After watching your video as well as a few others in the same position has given me second thoughts. I guess nothing is sacred in this world anymore.

I’ve had a problem like this before. I would’ve responded exactly the same way that you did to this buyer. You did an excellent job but it’s always a shame that it takes so long to resolve and is so frustrating to deal with as the buyer won’t accept responsibility and just keeps on messaging. When it does very occasionally happen to me it does stress me out a bit because of the injustice and the effort it takes to resolve. I remind myself of all the lovely satisfied buyers, it’s not even about the money on these disputed cases, it’s the deceit that gets to me.
Also I’m new to your channel and really enjoying your content. You are a great storyteller and you get to the point, you’re a natural at TH-cam.

I often come across the fact that it is the US buyers who often want to return something and say that they received something different from what was listed on eBay. I have shipped to at least 90 countries around the world, but the problem is always with US buyers. Perhaps for Americans it does not matter who and how to deceive.

I've been very fortunate as I've never had an issue as you just described, I sell some vintage doll parts etc so apart from these its very rare for me to sell any items with damage however after watching many videos I now list any TLCs, wear or damage in the Listing Title, I also now message the buyer straight after they have bought reiterating any faux pa's and it's surprising how many people don't look at all pictures and certainly fail to read descriptions! So if you have room on the Title list "Read Script" in the listing header / Title I believe this alone has enabled me to keep my 100 per cent feedback, Thanks for the info!

I used to fix laptops and sell them when fixed on Ebay but I gave up in the end, the number of times I checked the laptop before sending only to have them claim it was broken when they received it and they either return a different laptop or the same laptop with something missing like the ram or harddrive was insane. I was basically making no money because of all those fraudulent returns and gave up on the whole enterprise.

However eBay covered me from the start saying my funds were safe regardless of the outcome due to it being through GSP. Perhaps that's why your funds weren't on hold. My buyer actually won their payment dispute which is crazy but eBay covered me so I wasn't affected.

as a part time seller I never used to accept returns (I thought) however buyers tell lies by opening cases of NAD so seller pays return postage as well as full refund. Now I get many returns for clothing etc as Does Not Fit, I always put all sizing correct in description followed by tape measure on photos and still they put not as described as reason for return, returns are automatically accepted by ebay but you do not know about the reason until you receive the vat invoice for the postage label You've sent to buyer! you are correct about buyers who do not read description but many do know how to manipulate ebays money back guarantee.

I once sold a record player, and the seller purchased it and chose delivery, but I had to sell it for parts as I diddn't have the power supply so I couldn't tested, the buyer said can I collect as you don't accept returns, but it sold for 99p +postage, I gave her the option to cancel but I just got so fed up snd cross with her I just sent it so I messaged her stating that, as I was fair in my listing, as she said is it working as well, so I reiterated my listing to her that I was unable to test it due to not having the power supply. Goodness me some buyers! Never got it back as I crossed out the return address on the shipping label as I just wanted rid of it! And to a very funny buyer who I just did not trust! Luckily I only had the one so far as other buyers was absolutley fine, I made a small refund on a combined postage to the same address so they just paid for 1x postage.

Sounds painful. From my experience of painful / scam buyers over the years I would suggest he wasn't a scammer or trying to screw you over. A scammer isn't ever giving an apology, that's for sure! Seemed to just be misinformed and not understanding what had happened. Customers are often in denial of their own mistakes, but especially when they don't even realise what they've done. I've been looking up images for products before on google and if it comes up with an ebay image and you click through to the listing, if that listing is then out of stock it can then redirect you to a very similar listing that's the not exactly the same but is in stock. So whether something like that happened and he got sent to your listing from a new one I don't know. Glad it got resolved though. GSP is pretty perfect for sellers, esp with how they cover INRs, but INADs can be a nightmare with eBay expecting you to provide free international return labels. Thankfully rarely had an issue but when they do come up it can be very tricky.

Is it possible that a buyer in the US would see your item at a much higher price because Ebay are factoring in additional transatlantic airfreight + tracked USPS (?) surface delivery costs, which for a large item might account for much of the difference ?

2:11 OMG I got that Battle ship game somewhere. Good to know they well well on Ebay.
I also had a buyer who bought a vintage 80's home shredder from me, but he bought it on the cheap to use for privacy data shredding, which I think by law you need a cross shredder for confidential paperwork? He put in a claim for "not working" but in his demanding message to me said it "didn't work how he wanted it as it was not cut out to shred 6 pages at a time. "I message him back stating it was a old working home shredder that was 40 years old and was not suitable for shredding confidential data and I also pointed out that how can it be working if the claim was for "not working"
He said I was splitting hairs and left it at that. Ebay sided with me, as I had pointed out, he said that it was working, so his claim was fraudulent.

I had a guy in the UK wanted me to deliver the item which I had listed as "collection only" as it was a bumper cover and cost too much to post. He then said he could get it posted for £2.50? I called all the usual couriers and the PO and cheapest was £15.00. I stated it was listed as "Collection Only" He then put a dispute in saying I asked for more money than the listing! I sent all the comments from us both and they agreed it was no blame on either! It was not until a few months later I had a women call asking why I had not paid for an item from her? I had nothing to do with me so I said I had stopped using eBay because of my experience with a buyer! She then said the name and it was the same guy who used my details to cause trouble on ebay. We both agreed to send a complaint to Ebay and he was removed.

    Hi James,
    Interesting story - thank you.
    Q. I'm kinda scared of using GSP - here's why. My understanding is that my responsibility as a seller is to get the parcel to the eBay's U.K. distribution centre an that's it - eBay take over from there. Sounds great so far. However, if the buyer (in another country, obviously) wants to return the item for any reason, then I as the seller have to pay for the return. Lots of buyers know this, and so they ask for a refund knowing that you (the seller) won't want to pay the shipping cost of the return. So, they end up with the product for free. Have I got this wrong and, if so, please can you correct me! 🙂

At this point, what I want to sell is now more like, boxes and jewel cases for the box art, with original media that may or may not work.

I bought a computer battleships from a charity shop some years ago and made a profit on it.I remember the buyer, after receiving it, asking me if it had the pre set input cards with it,which it didn't.I had the game myself in the 70s and don't recall these cards, just inputting our own co-ordinates.I didn't intend selling it but it wasn't as fun as I remembered.

Payment dispute cases should be dealt with between eBay and the bank and NOT passed onto the seller as these are to do with bank details potentially being fraudulently used and sellers dont have access to the buyers bank details. I sold two items separately to one buyer over a three day period. Both sent signed for and both safely delivered with positive feedback. Three months later a payment dispute case was opened up on one item and 24 hrs later another on the second item. I lost both cases and had to pay extra fees . I'm a private seller and only sell bits and pieces so had no idea this could happen. I fought this and eventually won as apparently the buyer had done this before. Still can't give buyers negative feedback though can we?

Gsp is a nightmare as not worth using at times as sold a item which went to Australia and guy received said it was fake and I have to pay to get item back and cost to return was 50 quid not including tax . Lost 100 pounds on a item which wasn't fake. Ebay should have a gsp for returning stuff but buyer know this so so screw the system

that's the bit I couldn't wrap my head around. $75 + $65 shipping on a large item all the way to the US for a used suitcase with a broken wheel. Something just didn't make sense, like how much are suitcases over in the US to think that was a good thing to decide to buy?
Your explanation makes the most sense unless suitcases are an unheard rarity you cannot find easily in a shop over there.

You were lucky here. I always prefer a buyer to open a paypal case rather than an ebay case. If a buyer opens a "not as described case" on paypal, you simply ask them to return it for a full refund. and the buyer has pay postage fees and supply proof of postage and proof of delivery in order to get a refund. Ebay is different. If a buyer opens a "not as described case" - there is no debating back and forth, no independent person to make a decision. With ebay you MUST accept the return and you must pay for the return postage. The real problem happens is when the buy insists you have to send them $110 to return a watch and it must be sent via TNT overnight delivery. Or the buyer claims not to have paypal and you are on the hook to supply a postage label. If you do this it will cost you $50

The problem is so many delivery company’s leave it at the door or in a ‘safe place’ that clearly wasn’t safe as they get stolen, only takes a stranger on the streets to see a courier leave a parcel outside a house then wait for them to drive off and they’ll steal it, and then poor customers are left with no parcel that was ‘Delivered’ so they lose their money and they lose the parcel
