Geddy has said several times, this is his favorite work, and in a video interview of him, in the back ground on the wall was a huge picture of PW album cover. enough said! ;)
I still remember putting this vinyl on the record player for the first time and being transfixed by the performance and lyrics. couldn't agree with you more. chills!
Love listening to your comments And really agree. my top 3favoritese are grace under pressure power windows hold your fire. My 1st real concert was seeing rush in Seattle on their presto tour and what a way to start out a lifetime of watching shows by seeing rush as my 2nd concert that was amazing and so many concerts later they set the bar at The top to be reached. They never disappointed and I saw them On every tour up until their 2nd to last show in California amazing road trip with one of my brothers To meet up with another brother to see them at their 2nd to last show in Irving California . Rest in peace Neil.
This is my personal favourite song on the Power Windows album (which the album itself is my personal favourite from Rush). Beautifully written, beautifully arranged, beautifully produced. These guys are legends.
Such an awesome song, written and performed. The instruments are so fluid that it becomes an emotional song. I wish there was a live version of it. It's one of my all time favorite Rush songs. Stay metal!
It is amazing how they composed the songs to weave the keys, the guitar and the bass lines together. No, it's not all-guitar-all-the-time, but they were pushing more boundaries to discover new song-writing areas.
Alex's solo, chordal and arpeggio work along with the guitar textures and effects are from another world, never heard any other guitarist come close to this level of sofistication.
It breaks my heart to hear that Alex didn't care as much for this era. The song writing was exceptional, music was so complex and layered, the 81-89 era is just their best.
I love this haha ! Just subbed 😁 Such a (sadly) underrated song from Side 2 of Power Windows!! But if you know, you know. Everything Rush has done is just amazing. The solo section is just mindblowingly awesome. This actually moved me to tear up a little because it’s nice to know there are other people out there who also appreciate such beautifully written/performed songs.
How about Alex playing 'soul music' -- at THAT tempo! Geddy shredding on the WAL!!! The arranging!..the melodies! Every bloody song on PWs! Simply the best!
Middletown Dreams. Good call. Another day as drab as today Is more than a man can endure......... Very pertinent in the times we are now enduring.......
Awesome. Been quite a while since I've listened to that. When I first heard Rush, many moons ago, I didn't really care for Geddy's vocals. I can't really say why, just didn't. Everything else reeled me in enough to get used to it. Amazing band. Have you heard Losing it from Signals? That's in my top 5.
Great reaction to a great song! It was actually the album Signals that Alex said he found himself fighting with the keyboards for frequency space. They were all pretty happy with the way Power Windows turned out. So was I!..It might be my favorite next to maybe Hemispheres...which gets me to my request...I hope you can do GRAND DESIGNS before you leave PW...thats my favorite song on the album and another one Im sure you'd dig. I was lucky enough to see them do an extremely rare 3 encore show on this tour and they had kept Grand Designs in their back pocket to close. Brought the house down!
"Sometimes our big splashes are just ripples in the pool" I love that line, but love the song just as much. My favorite off of this album, just a shame they never performed it live :( I think it was a couple interview throughout the 90's I heard Alex say that he enjoyed the challenge and recording these songs, but they were all getting tired of producing the same sound for so long (3 albums) and he felt pigeonholed and not really allowed to experiment or change his sound due to needing to blend in with the keyboards. It's not that he hated it like people say or assume, he just wanted to change to a new sound and in 1989, they did!
For me if its a day I need hard Rush go back to the 70's and the 2000 s if I need softer and just calming go to the 80's and early 90's u can't say that about many bands the changes of periods some ppl don't like it but that is what drawed me to this band they have so much to offer and it is very satisfying for me glad u get it and u couldn't have said it better thanks for another great reaction stay safe
I have 4 stages of Rush for me - the portion that likes giving my fingers a workout playing (air) guitar in my car ranges from 1974-1981 I learned a lot of those songs as a guitarist anyhow and they are much easier to condition my fingers to play, than the ingenious, complicated stuff Alex did in the 80's! Then I listen to the mid-80's songs for inspiration and motivation through life. The late 80's and 80's era are nostalgia for me in high school watching MTV and first hearing Rush and seeing them live. The 2000's are the Hard Rock stage that I blast out of my car stereo and full volume on a sunny day :)
I'm just guessing here, but to me "Emotion Detector" is a play on the words "motion detector." This would fit with the lyrics too since a motion detector senses motion hidden in the dark and is usually attached to a spotlight. The lyrics are about discovering someone's true feelings - you sense an emotion and try to shine a light on it to reveal the truth. At least that's my interpretation.
Don't let people oversell the idea that Alex was unhappy in this era. He wasn't. He just wanted to move on to a more rock sound again, which is why we got Presto, Roll the Bones and Counterparts. It was never about ego. He just wanted the band to evolve again. And they said yes to his desire. People always try to inject drama into the situation, when it really wasn't there. Remember too that this is the time when the band starting incorporating string orchestra elements too. It was never about just having synthesizers in the mix.
I have been a diehard rush fan since 1980 and I have to say the last album I just don’t listen to it anymore. I don’t care for it as much as the others especially power windows this is a masterpiece every song is awesome just beautifully written and performed!
I really wish everyone would stop already with the "synth period." An instrument is an instrument, regardless. When I was younger, I played guitar and keyboards in a pretty big regional band in the Midwest. I never ever looked at one instrument as superior to the other. They were just different ways of expressing oneself. I like "Bastille Day" and I like "Emotion Detector." Different instrument, but all great music.
Alex had to change the most in this era! He’s amazing #1 ... Alex allowed Rush to go into all these new directions! Old Rush buddies didn’t like or prefer this direction. We need to change the bs narrative of the guitar being underrated. Tell me what would you change to make a Rush song better? Absolutely Nothing! Your correct everything about Rush is a 10! Let’s stop this nonsense ... Alex Lifeson is a Guitar 🎸 god
get with the fact they tried different stuff , styles, recording tech etc. over 40+ years. nothing is better or worse. they moved to now. Putting Yes there, Today. and last 50 years. you're so late
It's worth noting in hindsight that Rush's "synth records" don't sound that much like what people normally associate with the 80s now. A large part of that is that they used relatively obscure synths like the PPG Wave, and the production largely avoided most of the 80s cliches. The drums got bigger, certainly, but never to the levels that were common on, for example, Def Leppard's records. Also, if Alex is playing one of the best solos of his career but your ears are locked into the bassline, it's a Rush song.
The irony is Alex pulled off his (arguably) most innovative guitar work on this album. I’ve never heard anything quite like it before or since!
Right! Amen 🙏🏾 Alex Lifeson is a Guitar 🎸 god
Well said and I agree 100%
I agree he is soo inventive just a joy to listen to ! Vapor trails is so cool as well no guitar solos but his work on that album is genius !!!!!!
totally agree. I think Alex doesn't appreciate how inventive his guitar playing is on this album.
One of may favorite lines EVER - "Illusions are painfully shattered right where discovery starts"
As Geddy put it "Power Windows was the ultimate and closest to the perfect blending and balance of Guitars & Keyboards"
Geddy has said several times, this is his favorite work, and in a video interview of him, in the back ground on the wall was a huge picture of PW album cover. enough said! ;)
Even 35 years later, this song still gives me chills.
I still remember putting this vinyl on the record player for the first time and being transfixed by the performance and lyrics. couldn't agree with you more. chills!
Not one, but TWO of Alex’s greatest solos.......EVER!!!
Emotion detector should have been a single.
this is, that is true for most rush songs imo haha
Love listening to your comments And really agree. my top 3favoritese are grace under pressure power windows hold your fire. My 1st real concert was seeing rush in Seattle on their presto tour and what a way to start out a lifetime of watching shows by seeing rush as my 2nd concert that was amazing and so many concerts later they set the bar at The top to be reached. Great song! It just shows that, in a more perfect world, Rush would be played on the radio with songs like this!
The whole album is EPIC !!!
"THE CAMERA EYE", please and thank you!
Sometimes our big splashes are just ripples in the pool.
love your reaction dude...this song is epic...and even your cat was like, "Dang!!!" 😀👍😀
This is my personal favourite song on the Power Windows album (which the album itself is my personal favourite from Rush). Beautifully written, beautifully arranged, beautifully produced.
These guys are legends.
Top 5 Alex solo
Very underrated song
One of Lifeson's best guitar solos. Instant goosebumps.
Agreed. For me it's:
1) Emotion Detector
2) Between The Wheels
3) Freewill
Random order...
Analog Kid is right up there
Marathon, Manhattan Project and Territories are all classic tracks from this album.
Michael Briefs I felt the same way. 🤘🔥🤘
Alex's solo, chordal and arpeggio work along with the guitar textures and effects are from another world, never heard any other guitarist come close to this level of sofistication.
A once in a lifetime band...INDEED!!🎶🎸🥁🎸🎶🔥🙂
It breaks my heart to hear that Alex didn't care as much for this era. The song writing was exceptional, music was so complex and layered, the 81-89 era is just their best.
I used to not listen to this track on the album but now easily one of my favorites.
One of my favs. Great album.
That guitar solo is Alex playing with true emotion, like he always plays
My favorite song from Power Windows… so underrated
Very underrated song and album !
One of favorite Rush songs! I always queue this one up if I'm nodding off when driving. The lyrics are demanding enough to keep me awake.
Great idea. Got to do a country Sunday drive to Rush!!!
You might want to check out "The Analog Kid" from the Signals album.
one of the best songs. period.
One of Rush’s most boring songs.
Please listen to Middletown dreams. Love your reactions.
The last line of this song exemplifies what it means to be a RUSH fan... "Our feelings run high...."

Difficult for me to choose a favourite song by Rush, or anyone, but this is a contender...along with 'Freewill'
Limelight
If you’re unfamiliar with the Rush album “Clockwork Angels”, try “Headlong Flight”.
Here here! I second the motion!
That song is ridiculous. Neil goes CRAZY on the drums. Everyone does!
TBH this is the most underrated Rush song. Check out the 'Demo Tapes.' Fantastic.
James McClung I have not heard losing it. Trust me , I will be exploring Rush like a maniac !!!!!
The guitar is just beautiful here
Great driving bass through first part of guitar solo, before the keyboards kick in,similar to Between the wheels from Grace under pressure.
Garfield gives 2 paws 🐾 up for the song 😊
“ I wish I could write, I wish I could talk” lol
“Once in a lifetime Band”
Can’t say it any better!
Power Windows Is Sick!
Power Windows album could beat up Chuck Norris!!
My favorite song
The kiddy cat stole the show!! Kiddie was a fan. Anyways, thanks for the fun.
The chorus is fierce.
You gotta listen to grand designs from this album
Try listening to The Garden Alex actually plays keyboard before his guitar solo.
On the live version
He plays Time Stand Still as well.
Great reaction to a great song! It was actually the album Signals that Alex said he found himself fighting with the keyboards for frequency space. geneharland I will not leave power windows until I hear every song. Cheers!!
Exactly ... Signals to Hold Your Fire ... Alex held this band together! Allow the new directions and transformations!
Power Windows is an incredible album! One of the best albums from any band in the 80s
"Sometimes our big splashes are just ripples in the pool" I love that line, but love the song just as much. My favorite off of this album, just a shame they never performed it live :(

LISTEN TO GHOST OF A CHANCE,OFF ROLL THE BONES ,LYRICS AND ALEX GUITER PLAYING IT WILL MAKE YOU MELT

At least that's my interpretation.
Geddy Lee seems to me to have a lot of 'Confidence' in his singing!
It's easy to believe the lyrics.👍
Garfield approves. Cats are wise.
Sooooo good !!
That look your cat gives you! : D perfect...
RIP Garfield 😭 he was my reaction partner.
@@tonebonetelevision What? No!! I'm so so sorry. : (

Thank you for articulating that point. I love the cinematic qualities of these songs.
If you are new to RUSH, please put their entire career in perspective. Please watch this H.O.F. Induction:

Love this, but do reaction to The Fountain of Lamneth
Who’s leading Who 🎸🥁🎸
Every time you mention Alex you also mention reverb ? There was so much more going over your head .
