Another one of those Great Ideas from KC. This time its on the farm. I couldn't pass up taking this mower deck apart again just to show you guys how I did it and was able to Reset the spring with ease! I hope this tip trick helps incase you are looking for guides/ howtos on how to tackle the Deck under your Cub!

To reattach the spring, I just uses a long, thin screwdriver. Push the screwdriver through the eye of the spring, put the tip of the screwdriver behind the bolt, and pry. Pulling the screwdriver out from between the spring and the bolt may be a little difficult sometimes, but not extremely so. A nice thin bolt alignment tool works even better, but not everyone keeps one of those around. None of my punches are long enough to perform this task easily, but if you have a punch that is ten or twelve inches long, that will work nicely too.

Thanks for the idea. Our mower had been broken for 3 weeks. My brothers were unable to come fix it and Mom & I weren't able to. I got mad at the mower & tall grass and decided to figure it out myself. After seeing your tip on the spring, I did it. I just got an acre of grass mowed. Oh, I forgot to say that Moma & I are both disabled so this was a tremendous help. Thank you again.
That spring trick was GREAT!!! I've got a Craftsman DTG 6000 that has a very similar spring setup and I've battled that damn thing many times.With your method it was attached in less than five minutes!

Thank you for your spring trick! Based on your idea I made a hook out of a wire hanger. I got the spring off using that. Could not get it hooked on again as I didn't have the strength to pull it far enough.

Putting on the spring tensioner prior to assembly of the deck attachment means you are taking it off again to put the belt onto the engine PTO pulley. Do the spring thing after the deck is installed and the belt installed over the pto pulley!
Like the baling wire trick for attaching the spring.......I use an automotive brake tool, but I like your idea better.
oh and another way to get the spring on is a brake spring plier tool its got the grove in the handle to put on the bolt and lift it on

Fantastic video and very thorough. I've got the same model and couldn't believe someone made a video for this deck. The belt routing on this thing is crazy compared to most. I wish you would have made a video showing deck removal/installation, but thanks for this one anyway. It's going to help all of us LTX 1050 owners.

OK! spring technique! I've ot a wide bladed long screwdriver that makes it pretty easy to stretch that spring end over the bolt, but sometimes it takes a couple attempts. Your method is much easier and SOOOOO clever! Kudos man! I'm getting sick going through 2 $50+ deck drive belts with this thing though. I've identified a few things I want to try to address. Jus' buying a new set of idler pulleys doesn't get it. (Overhauled the blade quills (spindles) twice now - manually replacing the bearings) - sooner or later, I get to where I hear the engine humming
along at full song but can hear the blade speed drop considerably, even in light grass loads, I know another $50-$60 belt is in my near future. Pull back out of the hydrostatic (which I also overhauled last year) just to keep the belt from slipping too much. This thing has driven me nuts!
BTW - don't be afraid of these hydrostats. Mine made it to just under 200 hours before the pump and motor sections were so scored they wouldn't seal anymore. Worked fine, 'till the oil warmed up. They're not that expensive to replace a pump/motor pair and very easy to do. Just punch a hole in the bottom and thread it for an NPT drain plug - and change the oil yearly. (I'm using SAE 50 Valvoline SynPower)

You made that spring look easy... I spent 20 minutes with a vise grip and a screw driver. At least I know for next time!

Those idler pulleys are grease-able now, they make a needle hooked to a grease fitting that will go in under the rubber on the bearing. I have 440 some hours on mine and no failure YET.
The idler pulleys have sealed bearings so the grease stays on the bearings without greasing. so you replace the whole idler pulley. Not that expensive on line. They do eventually wear out after a lot of use. The spindles in this tractor probably have sealed bearings in them also( plastic seals on both sides of bearing race). But you can take the spindle shaft out and replace them. There are two spindle shaft bearings per spindle, one for the top of spindle and one at bottom so the long shaft is supported evenly as it turns. These bearings are relatively inexpensive at a bearing store about $7.50 a piece and even cheaper on line. You block off the blade and remove the top spindle nut and pulley and the shaft comes out the bottom of the spindle. Tap old bearings out of housing with punch and hammer. If shaft is not warped you can replace bearings. Take off blade and roll the shaft on a straight surface to check it. If bent it is better to buy whole spindle unless they are too high. Then you may find a spindle on line. Do not remove spindle from deck unless you intend on installing a new spindle as the bolts from the deck are hard and brittle and will break off. Can not drill them out unless using a press and many drill bits. So if just replacing bearings leave spindle housing bolted to deck when replacing shaft bearings. If you are using new spindle go to hardware store and buy good quality deck/spindle bolts. Take one to store for sizing. Apply a little grease or anti seize compound for future removal. Never re-use original deck bolts.

ya but after about 250 hours its not there no more the sticker i mean on how to run the belt so thanks for showing me this so i can put mine back on , these also snap belts regularly so keep them on hand too ,and im just now hearing that idler going bad i have 2 of these mowers just so i can keep one running lol thanks again

Hope it helps in the future!! I had a heck of a time trying to figure out how I was going to get it hooked. It's a stiff spring! Tough to get a hold of and pull otherwise... Damn throwaway equipment today.

My 2010 ltx 1050 has the heavy duty extra cost mower deck with 413 hours, and never had to replace any pully bearings because they came with grease fittings......Problem is that they are underneath the deck, but I have a crank up mower lift and then I have access to the 3 blade spindles.

Back to mowing season. Another thing I noticed is the manual seems to show the belt going on over the tensioner bracket /spring when it should (I think) go under. That's how it appears in your video.
D McC In the video I started putting things back together wrong. I reset and continued like nothing happen. the final shots of the belt configuration are correct. I did have to rerun that differently then how i showed in the video before the 3 min mark. After the 3min mark everything should be correct? lol
Video seems right. In Google+ I posted a pic of manual and there it looks like the belt goes over. Going under makes more sense. Otherwise it's rubbing constantly.
I noticed the same.
You are correct. The manual I have shows the belt going over the spring. It's impossible to do that without tearing up the belt in no time. The belt goes under the spring. Cub Cadet also never tells you about having to remove the rear tentioner pully in order to slip the belt on. That metal bracket blocks the opening enough to keep the belt from going on without taking the pulley off.

I have a 2012 LTX 1050. This mower had greasable spindles. I had to replace one and it came without an alimite. Wife then hit a big rock and broke another one. The new one came with an alimite.So i guess maybe they now come maintenance free. Also a word of caution for those who are installing the deck. Make sure that the rod thats the belt guard on the clutch in the front is inserted in the notch on the clutch housing.If not the clutch will spin pulling the wire out of the clutch and they are expensive(hard lesson learned)
I just hit a small stump Yesterday, that broke the Spindle & bearing housing "Non Grease-able". The replacement does however come grease-able. Possibly they decided to try something new? I Have no Idea, not an expert by any means. I just work and fix it... :) Thanks for the info and tips Much appreciated.
Thanks for the video. I put it all together in the right order I even took pictures as I took it apart. But it seems like the pulleys are too high in relationship to the blade pulleys. So I fraying belts. Am I just getting the wrong belts or do I need a specific set of pulleys
the junk they make today I'm not surprised. could be the belts? or something is misaligned? hard to say not being there. that whole system seemed botched and cattywampus. the mower in the video would eat belts and pullies for breakfast.
I’m having the same problem. It looks like to me that the spring is so tight (as everyone can tell) that it’s pulling the pulley without the bottom nut forward and out of level. About 10 degrees in my case. The threads in the bracket finally gave out so I’m going to try and putting a nut on the bottom. The position of the spacers is also beyond me. Mine have several washers and spacers on both and I have no idea which order they go because the schematic doesn’t even show them. Anyway.. how did you make out @sbond1963
What year is this mower? Mine is a 2011 LTAX 1050 (I've got 352 hours on mine) but this deck looks a little different. This has been a great mower and it finally broke down two days ago (drive belt broke) and I'm waiting for the new belt to get here. I like the wire tip for the tension spring, I will definitely remember that if I ever have to replace my pulleys. Did you order your pulleys from Cub Cadet? Thanks for sharing
use a zippy tie to pull the spring and it can be left in place
Hey Joe. Great video. Question. At the 1:31 minute mark of the video you see a little yellow bracket on top of one the pulley's. What is that and where does it go when you put things back together?
+O CZAKWC Thank You! O. That is the belt guide for the second pulley 3:04-3:27 it can be seen in the location near the first pulley it goes under the second and close to the same direction shown. Ours had a grass stain outline on the metal where it was and I only put it back where I found it. :)

I had the bolt that holds the pulley right next to the idler pulley break and thanks to your video, I was able to replace the bolt and put the pulley back on. Now one of my blades (The far right side away from the chute) doesn't seem to be spinning. At least it's not cutting anything. It manually spins if I pull the belt around. Not sure how one blade won't spin when the others are.
Do you have any video of the throttle? My wire pulled off the lever and can't get it back on. (my belts been working at least ☺

You never showed how you removed the spring in the first place? Assuming we need to remove the pulley on that side to get the tension off the spring to remove it from the bolt?

I raise the front end of the tractor with a tractor lift. Then slide the deck back under line it up drop the deck height lever all the way down. Hook the belt back up to the engine pulley. attach the rear deck mount pins first. then lower the tractor attach the front guide bar. That should be about it. Now get on that mowing and get mowing!! I guess my spring is worn out or is the wrong spring, because I can just pull it with my hand and mount it. My belt keeps jumping off the pulley, I found a bend pulley, I think is causing the belt to come off.
are your idler pulleys leaning forward a bit- just replaced the belt -idler pulley and also a new spindle and blades and am having problems with the belt constantly being thrown off-when my idler pulleys have the spring tension on them -seems as though they are leaning or not perpendicular to the deck -thanks !!!
I had the same issue and I ground part of the deck off where the tension bracket hit the deck that worked for a year or so but just recently added it back because it seemed like I was destroying the pulley bearing from being under to much tension. this is the worst deck design and has many problems good luck!
Does it matter if the pulleys you replaced are not facing up the same way? My left pulley is rivet side up and the left pulley is rivet side down. It was bought used with 30 hours on it this way. So when my belt broke I decided to replace the pulleys and noticed this was the way the pulleys were. Does it make any difference? Thank you Your video was helpful
I'm not an expert by any means but I don't think they are different only thing that might change is the ride height of the belt but it cant be by much.

I have a cub cadet ltx 1045 with 46" dual blade cutting deck, every belt I put on bounces like crazy when the cutting deck is off. When I engage the blades it mows fine. As soon as I shut it off the belt bounces and breaks. All belt keepers are close so the belt is not falling off the pulleys. Any way to fix ?
Just a thought (on an old post for others benefit)--are you dropping to idle speed before you disengage. Belts bounce at slow speeds. If so, disengage while at full throttle. If that's what you already do, try doing the opposite--not normally recommended. Obviously on a properly set up deck this should not happen. Something is wrong: if not bent or bad pulleys, or a bent deck, my first guess would be the spring is worn. Low tension will also cause your belt to bounce more at low speed. If you ever got this fixed, let us know!
Great video. I bought a 50 inch belt but it seems short. Do I need a longer belt for a 50 inch deck?

I replaced my belt and It seems to be in the right place, but the deck idler pulley with the belt keeper rod is getting HOT and can smell the belt "burning" I shut it off right away, but something must not be lined up right?! Any suggestions?
what was the reason for changing the belt? check if something is lodged into the blades, or ceased. I would check and make sure everything is turning/moving correctly. by turning the blades by hand and making sure not having restrictions. then I would check again and make sure the belt is on correctly. the belt shouldn't be touching anything but the pulleys. I am by no means a pro, I just get things done one way or another. Not seeing and not having all info its hard to tell. I hope any suggestions I have will help.

If you think about it,, most things that came from near the time they were invented will still work now (if they're taken care of, of course), but todays' crap crashes at least every 5 years, even if it's "babied".
umperthay I agree with you except for the design. I think I would let it rest on the engineer that designed this in particular! I have worked on heavy to light machinery my whole life. The engineers never have to work on what they draw and most have no clue what to write in the manuals. I bought the 2013 LTX 1050 because of Cub Cadets reputation for having a great line of mowers. I have a problem with my 2013 model eating belts, deck belts more specifically. I hate the manual that comes with it! It only covers one side and both sides of the deck are most obviously different. I had to change the deck belt with only 56 hours on the mower! What a disgrace! I am at 61.4 hours and the deck belt is now smoking. There is a spring that was hanging down in the area of the clutch assembly from the motor. The manual does not cover that spring at all! WHY! I have no clue where it goes and I refuse to shop it because of this. Does anyone have a clue what and where this spring goes?

TawodiUnega1 I have a 2014 LTX1050, and the spring on the clutch attaches to the frame. On the left side, if you were sitting on the mower. You should be able to see a marred spot in the black paint where it used to be.
ltx 1042kw 111 hours and had an idler pulley go and under warranty so they sent me new ones
well after 90,000 people have seen and most likely had the same problem I would hope they warranty the parts.. I was told I put more hours then they allowed for and the part wasn't covered. We had to pay out of pocket. Thanks for watching and if this video helped in anyway that's all that really matters to me at this point. :) Thanks for watching. keep an look out and get ready for the idler bracket that the pulleys ride on to go bad at around 350 - 400 hours depending on how much you work it. I normally run 4-6 hours straight minus refills. 1-2 times a week
I see that the idler pulleys just about touch each other when the blades are engaged and wonder if that is the cause of the pulley failure .You can't even get your finger between them or a piece of card board .When you install new pulleys it does not say to grease them either .You can get parts of cub cadet master on ebay also .I bought the extreme blades from him 29 dollars and free shipping .He sells the pulleys also .Thing is I wonder if this happened after just 111 hours if I should stock up on pulleys .Shame on cub cadet .The braking system they have sucks real bad also .Only thing I like is the seat and the gas window .
show us how to stop the spring from flying off when you engage the blades!!!!!
sorry, but I no longer run that piece of junk of a mower. I suggest not buying one. If you already own one sell it asap. it will only cost you more money in the long run. Good luck! I would suspect the belt is not on correctly? but I moved on to a John Deere zero turn.
Maybe you can help me. I removed the deck to sharpen the blades on this mower and a spring came off from I don't know where! I have everything put back together but I don't know where this spring goes. It's about 4" long.
Umm... Oh boy... :-/ I'm just a Wood Working Property Manager... :) But First thing I would do is check for Obvious Locations. Then if didnt work I would try and search the net for pictures of underside of the mower and try and match up placement of parts. If you don't see a spring on the mower deck. Then I would say that's the one missing? Hope that helped.

I tried your spring trick but I am not strong enough.
I think when I did it there was a nut/washer I put under the pulley with the 1/2 inch bolt. Maybe that shouldn't go there. I don't see one in your video when you put it on.
You might be right about the washer. I do not have a washer between the belt-guide and pulley. Only the washer I made sure to point out in the video.
I saw a video( I think Redbeard) where he removes the spacer under the idler pulley and moves the spring holder bolt to the other hole ( less tension). Said he mowed all season without throwing or breaking a belt. There is a spacer supposed to be there like the one you have in your video. In this other video there was an additional spacer that he removed.
@@BigJoeKasulischannel Cub Cadet parts manual shows a "jam nut" sandwiched between the pulley and the shoulder washer that you showed. Removing it seems to have no ill effect, and instead lowers the angle between the idler and the spindle pulley.
9/12/20 Bought and installed a new pulley on mine today. No jam nut--apparently previously removed. I did not replace it. I like the height the pulley is setting at.
@@vinfiddler5469 I've repaired mowers at home and every job I ever had in the last 50 years. I have to agree with what others have posted on the Internet and say the belt tension as it came from the factory is over the top! I'm going to move my mounting post about 1-1/2" toward the pulley. Any tension beyond that which keeps the belt from slipping simply puts extra wear on the belt and all pulley bearings.
9/20/20 -- I made up a spring extension from a 1" wide steel flat, 2-1/2" long. Drilled two holes 1-1/2" apart and installed the link between the post and spring. Because the spring hooks are 90 degrees from one another, so I put a 1/2 twist in the link so it aligns better. Still leaves plenty of tension to keep belts from slapping, and no slippage. Belts should last a lot longer.
That's weird because my LTX 1050 has grease zerks on all the deck pulleys.

I absolutely hate this deck. I ran dozens of kinds of mowers on the job and at home for 50+ years. You should not have to pull a deck, remove 10 screws, 4 fasteners, and a spring just to change a belt! And the configuration is a train wreck waiting to happen. It's a well documented belt-wrecker. There is a tremendous amount of stress/wear on the sides of the belt depending on the height of the deck. It's bad enough that I would recommend not buying this model. Just popped in to see your take on the process. BTW, you can also pull the spring on by clamping a vice grip on the side of the hook. Thanks.

I'm just pointing out that some people are going to follow you and do it wrong. The reason I watched the video wasn't because I was having problems with the belt. I was looking how to fix anything just how to put the belt around the clutch pulley.
