    Thank you Gordon for this video! I've been wanting to install a toggle switch for my fan for months now and got it done today. This will be very useful when I'm climbing hills in the summertime. I feel like my fan kicks on a little late and my check engine light comes on until I let off the throttle and let the fan cool things off.

      Thanks for watching. The fan switch also helps the A/C run better when parked at an idle.

    Great video thanks. I'm curious can you just cut the positive wire run it inside to toggle and back to positive wire? By turning off the positive the fan should kick on. No need to connect to the negative wire. That that sound right? That's how I run kill switches on my hot rod. 3 separate switches hidden with different series positioning for off and on. Basically a large positive loop where if one toggle switch is off the motor will crank all day and never start. Would be a nightmare with negative wires back and forth. Thanks again.

    So when you hooked up the 2 wires to the toggle switch it was one to the solenoid and the other one is the hot side of the plug?

    Solder and shrink tubing. Electrical take can come undone or still get junk in there and corrode wires. Shrink tubing will seal them up nice and tight. Also, I carry a bunch of weather proof but connectors with me and they work great for when im out on the road and dont have access to soldering. crimp em and heat em up to seal them up real good. I have some on wires for my lights that have been there for years and year. Great little tip on addding an engine fan switch. I did the same on a friends FLD with a detroit and it worked great.

    Where do you ground the switch if you're running both the hot and ground from the fan switch ?

    Gordon mine has the override for the fan bit i dont have sensor on the termostat housing so i have to run the fan all the time if not the ac will build alot of pressure can i add a temp sensor and run it to the ac pressure line ty

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The "high side" a/c line has a high pressure switch on it to cycle the compressor and it also cycles the fan. The switch is on the high pressure a/c line (the thinner line) usually at or near the dryer. You need to make sure the contacts are clean and tight, or just change the switch.

    Do you know what amp switch??? What gauge wire???

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The solenoid is like a relay, it doesn't need much of a switch or wire. I would use a 12 or 14 gauge wire with 15 amp switch for physical strength more than what it can handle, a 18 gauge wire and 5 amp switch can handle the load.

    Does the fan continue to work as it did before without the switch?

    • @57bagre
      @57bagre  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes when the switch is off, it is automatic.

      @@57bagre oh that's nice. I had mine with that switch that you could only do it with a switch. It affected my AC performance. Later A mechanic found the problem and got it back to Automatic.

      @@57bagre is the other way isn’t it? When the switch it’s off the fan will be on because you’re cutting the current and when you turn it on it will be as it was normal. Correct?

    Years ago (probably around 1992 or so) I was given another guy's truck to drive. He had been on sick leave and the last a-hole who used his truck broke the toggle for setting or accel/decel the cruise control. So one night I was parked early and there was a FL dealer across from the t/s I was at. Went over and bought a new toggle, opened up the panel with Torx driver, and found other plugs back there on the harness that could be hooked to switches if they had been ordered as options when the truck was built. One of them was eng.fan. Some yrs later, I was demoted to suffering, oops, I meant driving a Volvo, and in time, I learned that the wiring harness inside that dash also had the plug in it, just had to remove a "blank", and pop in a "Eng.Fan" switch (which I bought on the company account). I guess when they build the wiring harnesses, it's easier to spec out either a low, mid, or high level harness, and then just use whichever one will accommodate the gauge package that will be put in the truck. In some cases, it's just a matter of looking behind the switch panels and finding the plug waiting for you back there. I wonder if it is there behind one of the switch panels on your truck?

    • @57bagre

      That's possible, I've seen extra plugs in there too but not with labels on them.

    • @Hippie459MN
      @Hippie459MN 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know on my detriot, the fan is grounded to keep the fan off, remove the ground (unplug the fan clutch wires) and the fan will come on (break ground is just removing the flow of power. Cutting the positive would have the same effect). Just unplug the fan clutch and if the fan comes on, then you can simply wire a switch in line to break the ground. That is how I have wired my switch anyways. I didnt do it on the hot (Positive) side.

      The rebuild kit is like 250. Make sure you replace bearings as well
