It is important to understand the difference between Kratky and DWC, primarily how oxygen is delivered to the plant. With Kratky, as the nutrient solution is used up the roots on the top will develop into 'Air Roots' to extract oxygen from the air, it is important not to refill when using this method and cover the air roots as you may suffocate your plant from oxygen. With the DWC method you will want to keep the nutrient level almost full and supplement your oxygen with the air stone, because your plant will not have developed air root. Depending on the size of your plant and the length of the growth period Kratky will work well for smaller fast growing plants, for a longer growth period or larger plant you may benefit from DWC.

A little advice for hydro grow: Use vinegar to be even cheaper and easier than lemon for pH down. If at all possible, use clear white vinegar. Cheapest stuff you can get your hands on.
Regarding the DWC vs Kratky: The plants matter quite a bit. If you have plants that will be eaten relatively quickly, Kratky is awesome. Let's say salads and leafy greens. DWC wins for everything you need to keep around for a while. Let's say peppers for example. Kratky is pretty tricky to refill and larger plants will end up using most of the reservoir for rooting both air and water roots. Refilling can drown the plant by drowning the air roots. Much less of an issue if you oxigenate the water.

I tried vinegar it didn’t work well. In just a couple days ph was back up. And next attempt the ph didn’t go down much at all. So I bought some advanced nutrients ph down 1/6 8 ml vs 50 of vinegar 😮gave me from 7.45 to 5.8 ph in a 5 gallon pot.

I'll always prefer growing in soil but hydro def gets me through the cold months when I can't get my "garden fix" 😆 it's fun to experiment! Just ask whenever u need help🌻

Thank you for doing this. I have been looking at the Kratky Method after enjoying my Aerogarden for 3 years. I wanted tomatoes to go with my lettuce but the Aerogarden is not big enough for both. You gave me the courage to try it.

The aerogarden isn't large enough unless u use micro tomatoes. In these containers the tomatoes would def work cuz I did that last year n def got tomatoes

I used NFT initially but found slow undercurrent DWC to be a good option for me. It allows you to make large changes in a tub that is slowly introduced to the other buckets via a pump. Then you automate the EC/PPM/PH in the large reservoir.

Isn't the point of Kratky letting the water level go down and the formation of air roots above the nutrient water while other roots grow down to reach the water? The air roots take in oxygen and moisture. Thus there is no need for an air pump or constant topping up the water as long as the roots can reach it and water quality is monitored and maintained.

Hello Adhd Gardener. I'd say, forget the cabbage and go for Kratky lettuces, as there are many types and they grow so fast, which means the reward comes sooner! Happy New Year!!!

How about the part 3, how long did it stay to produce the cabbages for harvest

I just planted cabbage in one of my little 12 pod hydro gardens just to harvest the leaves. I`m trying watercress from seeds because they call it a super food and here in Louisiana I`ve never seen it in stores. The seeds are like dust but it`s growing fast after taking awhile to get going. I`m using a Folgers Instant coffee container, 3 inch net cup (perfect fit), and clay pebbles under a 10w Sansi light. I`m gonna use the existing plants to use for cuttings to start more. It grows very fast. I have dozens of those containers and 24 net cups plus a huge bag of clay pebbles. Water level is easy to manage in those with watercress...just keep it filled to right below the top of the pebbles where you can see it. Once per month dump it out and refill or sooner if needed. I`m gonna try the little round carrots and watermelon radish in them. I just received the seeds.

I really don't get why people use chemical ph buffers and alkaline and acidic solutions for home hydroponics. Pretty much most nutrient solutions are either alkaline or ph buffering so really the only thing you ever need is some lemon juice or cirtic acid if you already have it for cooking. The bottled stuff is also just an acid, just "cleaner" and more concentrated. There's no reason to buy that for home hydroponics.

Grow my peppers in water. Now first tomatos have sprouted. I´ve heard tomatos grow faster than you can eat them in the water system :)
Also two cucumbers now .. Haven´t tried it out, but heard theres right nutrients and ec:s to that too..
My first cucumbers in water this year. We´ll see ..
