    Rob what do you use to put your ants into hibernation. I've just ordered my first ever proper attempt at ants (harvester) and thankyou so much for the tips so far!

    Omg I feel so proud my first ever queen just got her first worker, she either got it yesterday or today, and it's already black. Should I offer them a very tiny drop of honey? Also, since it's Formica, should I put it in a dim area instead or pure darkness? I've heard that they need light to thrive. How often should I feed them honey, and how much with protein? Also, before hibernation, do they need to stock up on a lot of protein? Im sorry I'm asking so many questions, just really exited and nervous 😂

    • @RobJsAnts
      @RobJsAnts  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok a pinhead drop of honey or a mini piece of apple to start and change this every other day to start

      +RobJ's Ants k thx, I think throughout the week I might get another worker or two, if I see them trying to escape I'll give em a cricket leg.

    Really love your setup!!! Its so clean and concise. I'm going to try and emulate your display setup. One comment though. You mentioned that it seems your ants prefer to live in the out worlds instead of the nests. IMO that would indicate to me that the nests are not ideal and should probably be reevaluated to see if there is room for improvement...

  • @czaczaja
    @czaczaja 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Rob, for your formica fusca you have a red acrylic cover for the nest. Is it true that ants cant see red therefore they feel like they were in complete darkness? Im building my own nest and wanted to confirm.

    Rob, I have a question, how often do you feed your ant protein stuffs, cricket and etc... Because I want to change their food and water every 3 days

    • @RobJsAnts
      @RobJsAnts  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They all get fresh insects 6days of the week with a mix of Apple 🍎 products and 1 day of roast chicken 🍗 or egg yoke 🍳 and that's my 7day routine

    • @jonathanli4188
      @jonathanli4188 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RobJ's Ants okay, so you switch new foods everyday, but what if is a new colony, do you still feed everyday?

    • @RobJsAnts
      @RobJsAnts  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's handy to have one as it's one less thing for you to have to remember say if it's a warm day or cold. I use a swell reptile own brand thermostat for the heat cable

      You can open the nest up with the ants still in it and then place the open nest into there outworld and wait for the ants to move out and then clean and rehook up

      Looking good RobJ! During August production stops due to staff holidays from several staff members so a lot of products go on backorder. Live ant stocks and consumables remain unaffected. We are firing up production this week so expect new stock to arrive in store next week. :)

    • @RobJsAnts
      @RobJsAnts  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Am sorry but I don't know - But theres no warning on the bottle so would guess its harmless but would make you feel ill "PLEASE DONT DRINK YOUR ANTS PTFE LOL"

    • @antsscotland
      @antsscotland 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol I won't just a bit sheepish about ptfe lol I definitely won't let my ants drink it XD

    • @RobJsAnts
      @RobJsAnts  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Soon as its dry is totally safe to your ants - the PTFE formulation that AntKit uses is totally inert with a non-toxic carrier.

    • @AntKit
      @AntKit 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Correct, PTFE is non toxic.It would not be of risk to you if it was accidentally ingested but who would want to drink it anyway? :) It will not break down or decompose in a toxic way and is non carcinogenic. Do not expose it to temperatures above 240 degree C.

    great video, interesting how some ant colonies are dirty and some are clean? and how nests from the same sp have different food preferences??

    • @RobJsAnts
      @RobJsAnts  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      their preferences is more than likely down to the larger colony having way more brood to feed and raise so there less picky.
      Yes some ants remove rubbish right away and some store it for some time them move it out
