    In this video we show you how to install an aftermarket automatic transmission temperature gauge on a 3rd Gen Toyota 4runner. 1st Gen Tacomas are very similar to 3rd Gen 4runners so I would bet it would be a similar if not an identical installation. Many vehicles offer transmission temperature information via the OBDII port but some don't. 1999-2002 4runners do provide trans temp info. You access it via the OBDII port with a tool like a Scan Gauge or via an OBDII Bluetooth reader that sends information to a phone app like Torque Pro. For 1996-1998 4runners, if you want to monitor transmission temps, you have to install an aftermarket gauge.

    *PLEASE READ THIS COMMENT AND ALSO READ THE VIDEO DESCRIPTION FOR HELPFUL INFORMATION*
    **Even though this modification was done on a 3rd Gen 4runner, this video would give you an idea on how to install an aftermarket gauge on any vehicle. Depending on the gauge you purchase, you will need to tap into the appropriate wires on your vehicle to power it. You'll also need to tap into one of the transmission cooler lines. We recommend tapping into the send line because that will be the most accurate representation of your transmission fluid temperature. If you tap into the return line, that's after the fluid has run through the cooler and it will show you a temperature lower than your transmission is actually at. Finally you'll have to decide where to mount it. The A-pillar is a great spot to mount the gauge because it's at eye level making it easy to read while you're keeping your eyes on the road.
    **For those of you that found this video and have a vehicle that provides transmission temperature from the ECU, you don't need this modification to monitor your transmission temperature. You can pull the trans temps from the ECU via the OBDII port with either a Scan Gauge Tool or use a Bluetooth reader that sends information to a phone app.
    Here's a link to a Scan Gauge: amzn.to/36ge7HU
    I chose to buy a Bluetooth reader and use a phone app because it's much more affordable and I believe more versatile.
    I bought this Bluetooth Reader (For Android Devices Only):
    amzn.to/2BeQUsM
    I bought this extension cable for two reasons. It allows you to put the reader somewhere other than directly into the OBDII port and it has a shut-off switch. The OBDII port on 3rd Gens faces downward, so on bumpy roads, it can work it's way out of the port and fall out. Also, it's right near your right foot and I've actually bumped it accidentally with my foot which could break the reader and/or your OBDII port if you hit it hard enough. These readers also consistently draw power from your vehicle. If you left it installed and your vehicle sat for a long time, it could drain your battery. So, an On/off switch is nice to have.

    I used a drill and a drill bit to heat up the screw on the a pillar handle then used a stripped screw remover and it worked easily, had to go that route because my impact driver screw driver tip broke trying to remove it. using the drill and leaving it turning for a while heats up the screw quite a bit, enough to melt the thread lock.

    Hold a hot soldering iron on the bolt head and it softens the threadlock, making the bolt easier to remove.

      Thanks Noah. Great to know our videos have helped you out. Our style is to be very detailed so nobody ends up scratching their head and saying, "How did they do that?" Or, "What tools did they use?" Being very detailed comes at a price and that's longer videos. We have received criticism for the length of our videos but we don't care. We'd rather give more information than not enough to give people the best chance at success following one of our video tutorials. It really is a silly criticism because people have the ability to skip parts they don't need instruction on. It's pretty simple. We definitely have haters though. When I posted this video, within the first half hour, their was a thumbs down. The video is an hour long so they couldn't even have watched it yet. Somebody that doesn't like us, or most likely just me, is a subscriber and will give an immediate thumbs down to every video we put out. I guess they think they're doing us some harm, but I know the product we're putting out is good, so I just laugh and ignore it.

    Are the stock radiators really prone to fail and mix between coolant and atf? I’m new to my 3rd gen and i’ve seen a lot of people bypassing the radiator. I’m not sure they’re aware of the fact the radiator also heats up the atf in order to bring it to operating temperature. I think the solution is just a new radiator. (for preventative maintenance)

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There have definitely been instances of the trans cooler cracking causing a mixing of the ATF and coolant and then ruining the transmission. How common is it? Hard to say for sure but it's my belief it's more on the rare side. When enough people post the "Pink Milkshake" issue on the Toyota forums, the knee jerk reaction is to go out and bypass the radiator trans cooler so it never happens to them. I did my research and decided to just replace my radiator as preventative maintenance and added an external trans cooler and ran it in-line with the radiator cooler to help keep my temps a little lower when I'm really pushing my rig.

    Not to shoot you down great video and lots of links but I think a scan gauge 2 would be better then doing all this you plug it into you obd 2 port and you get the tranny temp and many more even your on the fly mph for 170ish

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Adam, you might not know this but 1996-1998 3rd Gen 4runners don't offer trans temp info via the OBD II port. The computer doesn't record that data. All you get with those years is an idiot light that lights up on the dash if your trans temp gets up to 300 degrees. So, in order to be able to monitor the trans temp on my 98 4runner, installing the aftermarket gauge was my only option. The years 1999-2002 offers trans temp info via the OBD II port. For my 2000 4runner, I use a Bluetooth OBDII port reader that sends info to the Torque Pro app I have on my Android phone. I take it you didn't read the video description because I cover all this info there.
      The OBD II reader is $22
      www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NLQAHS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      I use an on/off switch with it because the reader will draw power even when the vehicle is off. $12:
      www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UR5XBMW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
      The Torque Pro phone app is $5. As you can see, the total cost of the set-up is only $38. That's just a tad more affordable than the scan gauge 2, So, not to shoot you down Adam, but I think I just schooled you. Don't worry, I get schooled fairly regularly myself. It happens to the best of us. Happy Wrenching Adam.

    Another hi quality video from Timmy and his friends🎬📹. Maybe I use double sided adhesive tape from 3m, insted of screws, to mount on the trim. I want to paint my inside door panel and dash in black. Can i use the same paint brand? Thanks again for a informative good video guys. 😎👍🇸🇯

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe double-sided tape could work if you filed down those edges of the gauge pod so the tape would be grabbing more of the surface of the pod. I'm wondering though if the pod is made that way so the gauge doesn't overheat. If the pod perfectly conformed to the A-pillar trim piece, air flow would be minimal other than through the hole we created to run the wires.
      Yeah, you could definitely use that SEM paint brand to paint your door panel. Black should be a very easy color to find.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, we know they have battery operated and air operated impact guns. But, are you going to be able to hold sufficient pressure against the head of the screw to get it out or are you going to strip the head of the screw and now you're screwed. The impact screwdriver we used in this video is what we recommend people use so they don't end up striping out the head of the screw and then are forced to drill it out. The hammer strikes onto the impact screwdriver and incremental turning of the tool help avoid stripping out the head of the screw.
      I don't know what type of loctite Toyota used for those screws but it's a hell of a lot stronger than the standard Blue 242 Loctite you mentioned.

    Can I install a gauge like this in our 2009 RAV4?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could Steven but it shouldn't be necessary because your 2009 RAV 4 should offer trans temp info via the OBD II port. If you just get yourself a phone app and a Bluetooth OBD II reader, you can keep track of your trans temp without having to install an aftermarket gauge. If you have an Android phone, you can get the same set-up I have. If you have an Apple iPhone, you'll have to get a different app and reader. The phone app I'm using is Torque Pro. It costs around $5. The reader I bought and also a shut-off switch is linked below.
      **OBDII Reader
      amzn.to/2BeQUsM
      **Shut-off Switch - It allows you to turn off the power to your reader so you don't have to pull it out every time. The reader constantly draws a small amount of power and could drain your battery if your truck sits for a long time.

      No, there isn't a sensor you can add to your trans that would allow you to pull trans temp info from the ECU via an OBD II reader. If you have an android phone, you could purchase the same reader, switch and phone app. If you have a iPhone, I'm not familiar with the apps for those phones and the reader I bought wouldn't work for you. You without a doubt should be able to read trans temps via the OBD II port on a 2017 vehicle. The ability to read trans temps on 4runners via the port started in 1999. If you can't figure it out with your current app, try another one.

    So I followed a very similar method for getting my sensor and gauge hooked up. My concern is my gauge is reading some very low ball temps, specifically it bounces from 125-155. But never reaches 170’ F, im fairly certain I have it on the Hot line, but does the sensor bounce if it isnt insulated on the exterior? Like wind cooling the sensor ? Any ideas? The T piece I changed it from upright, to the being more level with the ground, so that the sensor is actually being filled with the fluid. I have a 99 3.4L Limited with the A340E tranny.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Vang, there's lots of variables to consider so it's a hard question to answer. Your trans temp will vary based off the ambient temperature and the load you're putting on it. But, I can tell you that the numbers you are seeing sound about right for a mild climate like I have in the California Bay Area. If you were in Phoenix Arizona in the middle of summer, I'd expect your temps would be higher. When 4wheeling, do yourself a favor and use 4Lo for sustained climbs. It makes a HUGE difference in your temp. Also, when driving paved mountain roads, turn overdrive off. When you are at that speed between 3rd gear and overdrive, having OD off can drop your trans temp by around 20 degrees.

    Hey timmy, whats the hottest youve seen the trans temp at? And what is average operating temp? Only reason i ask is i have a 99 4runner with scanguage hooked up. average trans temp reads about 140. Hottest ive seen it get was 240 uphill not towing anything, while my coolant temps sit around 186-190 the whole time. Maybe install bm trans cooler.. asap?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The highest I've seen is around 240 also and that was with an external trans cooler. It's not hard to spike the temps on an automatic transmission. All it takes is a consistent grade for a decent distance and your temps will go up very high and that's why it's good to monitor your trans temp. An external cooler does help. Turning Overdrive off helps when you're in between 3rd Gear and Overdrive. Going into 4Lo while 4wheeling will help too. 240 is high but it's not like you did any damage to your trans either. 240 is about the time I start thinking about pulling over and giving my transmission a break. I did this on a Death Valley trip when we were climbing a crazy steep road grade that went on for a long long time on a 100 degree day. It's hard to say what my average is but I'd say somewhere around 140-170 is probably average.

Her neighbor suffered a stroke and asked her to take care of his dog and the 4runner came with it so she could haul the dog around. The inside of the rig definitely smelled like dog, and after some cleaning, it still does somewhat. The dog passed away and the lady bought a Prius and didn't need the 4runner anymore. She inquired about trading it in at the dealership and those freaking crooks were only going to give her $1000 for it. You know they would have put that on their lot for sale for at least $8000 but probably more.

      It's getting harder to find low-mileage 3rd Gens but they're still out there especially in California where it seems a ton of people bought them. At the beginning of the year I found a 98 with 130k. I bought it for $6500. For the current market, that was a great price but I still think I overpaid. The Kelly Blue Book value was around $4500.
      I personally wanted to buy my vehicles closer to 100k so I'd hopefully get a lot of life out of them before having major drivetrain issues. Like the other person who answered your question, these engines can last a really long time, above 400k. But, there's plenty of people who've also unfortunately experienced a blown head gasket or cracked head around the 200k mark. Or, they experienced a transmission failure. So, it's sort or a crapshoot. People are asking seriously stupid money for these 3rd Gens. 1st Gen Tacomas are even worse. They're asking $5000 - $10,000 over Kelly Blue Book values. I think it's relatively safe to buy a 3rd Gen with 200k+ as long as it was well-maintained. Service records are vital because a CarFax report doesn't show everything. If it was well-maintained by the previous owner(s), I'd buy a higher mileage 3rd Gen. Just don't overpay. I wouldn't give some dude $10,000 for a 3rd Gen with over 200k miles regardless if it had a bunch of modifications. Like I said, people are currently asking crazy money for these. If you don't want to search a long time like I did, you'll have to overpay quite a bit to find a good one.
      If you're not in a hurry to buy, just search everyday on Craigslist and hopefully one will pop up with low mileage, in good shape and for a fair price. It took me over a year to be in the right place at the right time to buy that 98. Expanding your search area can help a lot. I use a website called autotempest.com. You can put whatever search distance from your location you want and it will search all the Craigslist areas for you within your search distance. It's super helpful for finding a vehicle.
      Glad you're liking the videos Sean and I have been making. Good luck with the 3rd Gen search.

I like to know where the trans temp is at especially when I'm driving mountain roads or going 4wheeling. Without a gauge, you don't know when the temperature is getting to a point where it would be prudent to stop and give your transmission a break. Hey Tim, do you have a link to the face bushing? I'm having a tough time trying to find it here.

      If you're talking about the fire wall grommet, we provide a link in the video description.

      Timmy The Toolman no actually I was talking about the 1/4 to 1/8 fitting for the gauge. Unfortunately osh doesn’t exist anymore and Home Depot only had the barb and tee fitting. I ordered it online though.. I do want to ask you though. For the wiring on the power side since I don’t have the same harness As you could I just as well tie into the OEM wiring before the radio and use quick splice connectors? This would prevent me from fully cutting in and further possibly damaging the wire before my head unit..

      @@davidseck1146 I'm not familiar with quick splice connectors but I imagine it would be fine as long as you are tapping into the correct lines you need to power the gauge.

    Got a video on how to install an oil pressure gauge?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry Alex, we don't have one for that. I guess knowing your oil pressure could be helpful but as long as you know your oil is full, I don't think there are any type of oil leaks that cause a severe loss of oil and thus pressure during one drive, even a long drive. Now, if somebody does something stupid and forgets to tighten the oil pan drain plug after an oil change or doesn't properly tighten the oil filter, well, you can't fix stupid. Maybe I'm wrong and there's been cases of seals catastrophically failing but I haven't heard of them. Usually people overheat their engine when a coolant hose blows and they're not paying attention to their engine temp gauge.

    can you do the same thing to a manual 98 4runner

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, you couldn't. And, you really don't need to worry about the temp of a manual trans, transfer case and differentials that run gear oil. The important thing is to make sure the gear oil is full and you renew the oil at regular intervals. Every 30k miles is a standard interval for replacing gear oil unless you're using a synthetic gear oil and you can use it for more miles.

    Did you change the trim plugs out to screws instead?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I mention that in the video. I didn't like how well the plugs held so I switched to small screws with nuts and washers on the back side.

    Do a vid on how to know if you have obd2.

      I don't think a video is necessary. Basically, if your vehicle was built from 1996 and newer, it has an OBD II port.
