You are right..They had a deal in place with Turkish Government to split the island into two sectors without disturbing the British air basis. The agreement was Turks were to occupy upto 33% of the island same percentage as the Turkish population in the island but they ended up with 38 %..British agents were the ones wento villages and caused panic amongst the Greeks and they fled their homes with fear of Turks to come and kill them. In fact it made it easy for Turkey to just occupy the land with no resistance.
US government also backed up the operation by Henry Kissinger the US Minister as the main guy to deal with it.

In Greeks case they were misled by Greece and Military Government with their stupid dream of Enosis.

Very interesting. I am English. I used to play on the beach before the war. The sea was polluted at the time because of excess tourism (I've seen the same pollution in Ayia Napa). The sun would vanish behind the high rise hotels at 3.00. I have just spent two weeks in Cyprus and stood on the beach again, this time outside the luxury Palm Beach hotel. I then drove along the length of the road bordering the 'ghost town'. While the buildings could have been saved in the 1980s - 1990s, everything now looks beyond repair. I hope a settlement is agreed soon. I hope people find peace and receive compensation for what they lost. I also hope that, whoever has the opportunity to rebuild the town, does so without allowing it to become an over-populated tourist resort...

It's a testament to the Greek people that they've been able to accomplish so much with so little. If it weren't for successive socialist administrations, Greece would not be in the situation it finds itself in now.
As for the occupied part of Cyprus, it's a matter of perspective what is considered poor and what is considered rich. The average wage in Cyprus is much greater than that in the occupied portion and Cypriot Turks go to the south for medical treatment. While i don't want to blame one side over another for the war, as a lot of blame sits on my own country, Cyprus that is, for all they did to Turkish Cypriots all over the island, you cannot stand there and tell me that that minority of people was enough of a cause for land that never belonged to turkey to be annexed by force. As a little fun fact, the invasion was called operation freedom by the Turkish army. Hiding behind the lie of protecting Turkish Cypriots to take over half an island is immoral by any means. There was never any dispute over land, simply ideals. Now i understand that a lot of Cypriots put all the blame on the Turkish and same goes for the Turkish too as that's what you learn growing up. No one teaches you about your countries mistakes, but the fact is prior to his the vast majority of Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots co-existed as friends and neighbors and even families and all this invasion served to do was separate u all of us and expand the Turkish reach in the Mediterranean. Cyprus is on a very prestigious crossroad of Europe, Asia and Africa and so many countries in out history sought to take it over. Turkey never cared about their own people, they had wanted to take over the island for centuries, as they had done before. And as for people talking about why we didn't fight, i'd like to say that my grandfather, as with most of our grandfathers, were captured, taken to mainland turkey and tortured for years until being sent back just for defending against a force thousands of times bigger than us. There is no scenario where we could have prevailed other than getting help from Greece or Britain. We were never a war faring island and never sought to be. I do not have a problem with Turkish Cypriot or even Turkish people, as they are very close to my own culture but the dictatorship that is the Turkish government i have many problems with. They not only oppressed my people but now oppress even their own. They raped, pillaged and destroyed so much of our countries beauties, and that goes for both Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot. It simply saddens me to see so many people defending these actions by saying a minority of Cypriot were dicks to Turkish. These actions are indefensible, and while i dont think this is ever going to happen, i wish that eventually we have a unified Cyprus once again, free of the dictatorship that is Turkey so that Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can once again share a neighborhood, bond over coffee, and once again coexist as one.

Andreas Yiannakou I think that the young people should be able to live together. Its all a case of how we handle racism, if we endorse it by not allowing Turkish Cypriots in our community then you are right we will end up not liking each other eventually. The key is that, I believe, we have a lot of things in common with those "aliens" in the other side. They are all presented as Turk loving idiots to us but I am 100% sure it isn't the case. Plus some business with Turkey will help our economy.

THIS IS HOW IT ALL STARTED : Since 1931, Greek Cypriots have intensified their demands for mergers with Greece. The “ENOSIS” campaign, which can be summarized as combining Cyprus with Greece and making it a tamamen Elen ”island, was accelerated after the Second World War. In 1954, Greece decided to bring the Cyprus issue to the United Nations. Greece did not succeed in its various applications to the UN for the purpose of "self-determination" between 1954-1958. Meanwhile, Colonel Grivas, who came from Greece, founded the EOKA terrorist organization in 1955, and the number of acts of violence on the island has increased. During the period 1955-1958, Turkish Cypriots had to leave 33 mixed villages. In 1956, Britain declared that not only the Greek Cypriots but also the Turkish Cypriots had the right to self-determination, and that the demand for distribution was a viable option.
During the period 1955-58, Turkish Cypriots were forced to leave 33 mixed villages due to violent actions

With cities founded by Greeks long before the Turks even arrive in Minor Asia.
The birthplace of Aphrodite and Zeno of Citium....
How can it belong to a foreign culture that had invaded it brutally so many times ?
Cyprus is a Greek creation! Cypriot is a Greek toponym.
Turks never respected what represents the name CYPRUS.

Then Greeks should have fought for their land. They could fight back but they didn't they ran away. When we were back in WWI even civilians fought back against the western invaders. And here I am not talking about the Greek civilians on the island. Greece could also land its soldiers on the island and fight back. But they didn't. So you can't come here and cry and blame our ancestors.

@poison ivy Greeks inhabited the island thousands of years before the Turks even arrive in Minor Asia. Greeks(Cypriots) gave its name and founded its cities . The name Cyprus describes the ability of Aphrodite. There are ancient Greek monuments all over the island and many ancient Egyptian, Assyrian, Greek and other scripts proving this. Who do you think built the amphitheatres and the temple of Apollo Hylates ? The cities of the island of Aphrodite are part of the Greek civilisation.
Why do you want them so much? Are you jealous of the Greeks?

    • @iridanos1443
      @iridanos1443 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@poison ivy If that was true the majority of Cyprus wouldn’t still speak Greek nowadays. We would speak Italian and we would be Italians. But we are not. Where do you think Greeks Cypriots came from? From outer space?
Also there are Venetian manuscripts in the museums of Venice that talk about the life of Greek Cypriots during the Venetian rule and confirm that Cyprus during that time was mainly inhabited by Cypriots (Greeks) not Italians.

    • @iridanos1443
      @iridanos1443 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@poison ivy We do recognise the Turkish Cypriots my friend. They are rightful citizens of the Republic of Cyprus, like I am. And some of them live peacefully in the same area I live nowadays. They have the same rights as I do. Ethnic cleansing was caused by Turks against Greeks and Armenians who were living in Minor Asia. If Cypriots had caused ethic cleansing there were not be any Turks in Cyprus right now and we wouldn’t be here talking about things that make no sense. During the 50’s-60’s mistakes happened by SOME bad people from both sides. Don’t judge a whole country by the mistakes of the few, it’s not wise. I wasn’t even born back then so it is not my fault. I didn’t kill anyone and I could never kill anyone. No-one has the right to take someone’s life for any reason. Also don’t forget that is the Ottomans who attack the Greeks Cypriots first during the 1570’s. The Turks started this!
Do you have any idea how much suffering the Ottoman Turks caused to Greek-Cypriots that period or are you pretending that those crimes never happened ?! The Ottomans had no right to invade in Cyprus neither did the Venetians or any other nation. Keryneia was founded by Achaean Greeks and Ammochostos by Macedonian Greeks they are part of our cultural heritage which you don’t respect.

TURKEY's OPERATION ON CYPRUS IN 1974 IS COMPLETELY LEGAL:
    (1) Makarios (1ST PRESIDENT OF CYPRUS) (the UN Security Council Speech, 19 July 1974):
MAKARIOS: "CYPRUS WAS INVADED BY GREECE"
Sound record of the speech: www.cypnet.co.uk/ncyprus/history/republic/makarios1.wav
    (2) Turkey acted on Cyprus via Art. IV(2) Treaty of Guarantee ("In the event of a breach of the provisions of the present treaty, Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom undertake to consult together with respect to the representations or measures necessary to ensure observance of those provisions. In so far as common or concerted action may not prove possible, each of the three guaranteeing Powers reserves the right to take action with the sole aim of re-establishing the state of affairs created by the present Treaty."), hence in compatible with Art. 2(4) UN Charter.
    (3) The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) (29.07.1974, Resolution 573): "The Turkish military INTERVENTION was the exercise of a RIGHT EMANATING FROM AN INTERNATIONAL TREATY and the fulfilment of a LEGAL and MORAL obligation."
    (4) Greece's Athens Court of Appeals (21.03.1979; Case No: 2658/79): "The Turkish military INTERVENTION in Cyprus, which was carried out in accordance with the Zurich and London Accords, was LEGAL. Turkey, as one of the Guarantor Powers, had the right to fulfill her obligations. The real culprits . . . are the Greek officers who engineered and staged a coup and prepared the conditions for this INTERVENTION." Note: Just after 5 years later than 1974, in 1979, Greece's Highest Court decided Turkish military intervention is legal without making any difference between 1st and 2nd military operation!
    (5) Till now, there is NO sanction applied on Turkey due to 1974 Cyprus war: another sign of legality dimension of 1974 events.
If a country invades another one, UN imposes sanctions on that country.
Iraq invaded Kuwait, and UN imposed sanctions on Iraq.
Turkey did not invade Cyprus, hence UN did not impose any sanction on Turkey!
    (6) There is no UN resolution that calls the Turkey's 1974 action as "invasion"!

This is yet another example of a European problem that can to linked to the aftermath of WW1. Turkey, being a member of the Central Powers, was one of the defeated nations.
The British "colonized" the island (a term used by John Hughes-Wilson) in 1925, at which time it ignored or voided land ownership by Ottoman charitable organizations, and, proceeded to claim rightful ownership of all Cypriot land. With this delusion of ownership, the Britiah sold this land to the Greeks, something that it had no right to do.
As Cyprus wanted to join the European Union, there was a golden opportunity to have the entire Cypriot question solved: Either the whole island, or, none of the island!

@EK 86 The Turkish minority did the same too. And the Ottomans before them! Cypriots were fighting to protect the Cypriot culture. Turks wanted to Turkify it like they did in Constantinople. Cyprus is the island of Aphrodite not the island of Hatise. lol

You know whats astonishing? That the British have a say about a land which is not theirs! European Union has a say, Turkey has a say, but Cypruses needs and say is being rejected by these superCountries. Im very sad because Cyprus plays a big role by
strategic position in the mediterranean. And i hopefully they leave once and for all (the turks and whoever supports their dictator ship ) when the islamic vs the rest of the world start...God have mercy on us the sinners...

And where exactly does mr John Hughes-Wilson live? I guess at the Occupied by Turkey Areas. Tell us mr. John, what about your several colleagues killed and threatened by some Turkish military officers for informations? Tell us also about your hundreds of other colleagues that TOOK money from Turkish people to bring them stuff from Varosha under some heavy payment... Or some others colleagues of yours who "found" some valuable items from the G/C homes and sold it to Turkish soldiers.... If you are about to remember things you should of course remember that instead of presenting G/C as the only bad guys here.... Oh and yes there are lots and lots of reports for this matter. And come on ... let's be honest. Sure you must took some money to deliver items from the city ;) but from the other side... not from the savage and bad G/C's who threatened you. 45 years passed, be honest and stop playing the good guys because you are NOT.

If you know of any that have done this then I suggest you report it to the British Authorities as this will be investigated. If, however, you're just making it up and attempting to put a barrier up then grow up.

Nice propaganda 10/10. Because we are a small island Turkey and UK played us like a chip in a poker game but we took the legal procedures required by the international law to create the The Republic of Cyprus 16 August 1960, Cyprus attained independence after the Zürich and London Agreement between the United Kingdom, Greece and Turkey. The land belongs tooooo... The Republic of Cyprus which we are the rightful owner since we paid and bought and build our houses and businesses on the land legally. No matter who is to blame etc the land still belongs to The Republic of Cyprus.

What was this English UN guy doing in Cyprus when Turkey was bombing hotels etc, and killing innocent civilians? He seems to glamorise the events. I believe he bares a grudge against Greek Cypriots for the embarrassment of the EOKA freedom fighters against the might of the British Empire in the 1950s.
