I think this fails because it feels so forced. Like, imagine you go to school and this kid makes a spray can that can replace your shoes. That's amazing. It's a stretch to think anyone would even think of whether or not you can get your feet out. Either way, that's a minor detail... actually, it's not. Did he just invent paint spray that can resist hardened steel (from a saw blade)? Get a factory making that shit up ASAP, you just stumbled upon freaking unobtanium. Shoes? Screw that shoe nonsense, put that shit on cracked concrete to reinforce it. That material has infinite applications, it could really change the world. Even if it's only an average grade steel, it's still freaking spray-on at room temperature. Even if some stupid kids laughed at him, anyone with even a modicum of knowledge about materials would see that and fast-track him to greatness. At the very least, they'd want the intellectual property rights to his invention so they could sell it and make bank. The military especially. You couldn't hide something like that without people desperately searching to find it. And someone who can make the kind of inventions he made on a regular basis would be an effective gold mine. Sure, his original applications were shit, but there is serious technology behind them that can be applied elsewhere. People (including myself) would dedicate their entire lives to following him around and putting his inventions to good use. That Remote Control TV? You just replicated the work of years of highly trained engineers at Boston Robotics (recent developments, mind you) by developing a two-legged walking system. And it can kick open doors? His hair unbalder system works. Amazingly well. Seriously, even if it only worked by growing a ton of hair all at once, shave the excess off. None of his inventions mentioned were remotely failure-ish. They were all spectacular successes. The fact that he managed to get a super expensive looking laboratory to himself speaks volumes to the kind of grant money or invention money he must be making. Trying to cast him as a "wannabe-scientist" failed miserably. All I see is a super-star scientist like Tesla rocking the world's socks off with earth-shattering invention after invention.
