THE TROOP! 💀 It's the one book that has stuck with me the most because of the setting in which I read it. It was when I was a wildland firefighter out on a month long camp out in the forest of Idaho with a crew of 10 other firefighters. 2 hours from town on dirt roads and no cell service. It was so haunting because it the imagination couldn't help but imagine what would happen if we were in that scenario.
I needed this video, Meg! I've just read my first ever extreme horror (Woom) and I had no idea where to go next and wanted to ease in gently, if at all possible with this genre 🤣
I love the recommendation videos you do! (As well as the unhinged vlogs lol) I purchased Gone to See the River Man a few weeks ago and ready to read as soon as I finish my current book. I found your channel a few months ago and have been inspired to try out extreme horror. Hope you are recovering well 😊❤
Unrelated to the video, but I have a recommendation FOR YOU. This is like the one horror book I've bought completely blind so far. I picked this one 100% because of the sick artwork on the cover. It's called The Haar by David Sodergreen. The cover art has this red translucent creature on it with one big eye. My friend said the image reminds him of Hellraiser. Great fun so far. It's not extreme, but it does have some graphic stuff in it. I'm about halfway through and am getting more excited the further I read on mmm. It's only 200p, so it's just a light read. Tell me what you think if you pick it up
I just read The Haar last month and it was such a good read! I really enjoyed it, very different type of horror story. I also read two of his other novels, Dead Girl Blues and Maggie’s Grave. I’m fairly new to extreme horror so I can’t say where they are on the ‘extreme’ scale but I managed to read through them and I’m pretty squeamish 😂
Out of all the books I have not bought from this list yet, they're all going on my list. Not that I need an intro to extreme horror. I was already FAR, FAR FUCKING gone before I found you and extreme horror books. This will just be more variety. The Troop sounds pretty lit
This video could have been named "Extreme Horror Help - The Doctor is IN" and it would have been 100% accurate 🤩. Thanks for the expert recommendations, as always! I added 100% Match to my list!
New subscriber! I just finished The Reddening by Adam Nevill, and loved it. I’m about to start reading Tender is the Flesh. It’s been recommended to me many times! Horror for the win!
Such an awesome, helpful video! Gone To see The River Man is one of my books of the year and I can't wait to read the sequel. I've only read a handful of extreme horror, including The Black Farm and Off Season. I loved them both, but not sure how more extreme you can get then The Black Farm. Maybe I don't want to know. 😀
I actually DNFd The Resurectionist by Wrath James White beacause I didn't give a shit about the story, themes or characters. I did for River Man and Black Farm, that is the difference for me not just in extreme but horror as well. Yeah the Black farm- slow cannabilism, torture, arms cut off.....very beginner! Have a slice of her shoulder and eat the angel.😂@@ReadingWithMeg
Interesting recs! Brother didn't feel that "extreme horror" to me, but I've been avoiding Troop because I don't do bugs. On that note, have you read Micro by Michael Crichton? There's a disgusting scene with a wasp sting that still gives me the ick.
Brother is probably the best book I have read in a LONG time. The ending... broke me!! The troop was okay!! that Shelly kid would have def grown up to be a serial killer haha. Tender is the Flesh was good, but I was expecting more I guess, Gone to see the Riverman... omg the BEST!! Its me Charlie.. was good!! The cup scene did it for me haha ((Told you im going to try and get better with commenting haha )) Hope your feeling better today
Yes it five star ⭐️ video from a amazing and wonderful young woman love the video and the brilliant channel prayers and blessings for you and your family love your Aussie family friend John 💛💚💛you have given me some amazing and fantastic books to read thanks ❤❤
I love the turn event for Lori. She 200% deserved it. Great book. Gone to see the river man is a gem, even if I'm not a big fan of the author. 100% match for me was boring. Didnt clicked with me outside of cool cover.
I find The Troop highly overrated. It had a great premise and setting; the first 50 pages were so, so good. Also had a good last 50 pages I thought... but man, the missed opportunites in the middle of the book, the decisions the author made, and the character development of the scouts... my, oh my. Some of the worst crap I've ever read.... Now I am reading The Ruins by Scott Smith, and it is just so much better. It's like going from an amateur author to a professional.
Can you recommend any Splatterpunk or Extreme Horror books that don't have the following trigger warnings in them: (Incest, Peadophilia, animal abuse/cruelty, domestic violence, torture, mutilation, maiming & death of children) I already like the author Matt Shaw's books, but a few of his books I probably won't read such as: Dolphin, Hub, KIds, Porn. I can't read about fictional, sadistic, fuked up stuff happening to kids or animals. 🤢🤢 I love gory Extreme horror books 🤘🤘😍😍
It’s honestly really difficult to recommend any extreme horror that doesn’t contain a huge list of trigger warnings. I’d say maybe Night of the Prowler, Harbinger of Vengeance, or Shared by Two by Jon Athan. But I don’t like recommending specific books because I have zero memory and can’t promise anything lol but I think those were okay
Honorable Mention goes to Zola. This was the first proper extreme horror book I read (thanks to Meg), and it's is strangley polished for an extreme horror book. It is disgusting beginning to end. I'd say the main trigger for this would be the sa in the beginning, but the real gross stuff for me was just how repulsive and gross some of the descriptions in the book are. This book is very short and hard to put down, so the suffering won't be too long, but it was great fun in the end. I'm partly joking here because this book is just FUCKED, but I wouldn't say it's traumatizing
@ReadingWithMeg whoops 🤭(for anyone that reads Megs reply but is still interested, please read this first). Yeah, I would say this is more of an intermediate read. Like you've gotten a taste of where things can go from this list, but this HEAVY on the descriptive side. If SA and Kids are your triggers, don't bother. The first half of this book has a brutal and somewhat realistic account of those things. The second half is just disgusting all the way through but doesn't have any of that stuff in it. The second half is just like I did not need that much detail about the gore and other gross things, but thank you anyways
I read gone to see the river man and stopped reading a quarter of the way through because I had to let myself come to terms with how shit of a sister she was before I could finish lol.
The troop felt like it was pulling it's punches. I feel like if the cast were not like 99% kids it would have been better. It's not a bad book by any means. Just not great. I like how you put "things have gotten worse"after the troop the two books with a common theme
I would LOVE to read horror without kid/kid sex scenes & rape in them. It seems thats all these horror books are getting into. I feel splatterpunk isnt for me bc of that. 🤷♀️ And i wont get into now lol I did read the Troop tho. Lol messed up weird book 🤢 had to skip the animal cruelty pages tho 😂🤣 so mean
YASSSS queen. The fact you said Brother as your #1 extreme horror book is iconic. I feel the same way. It doesn't get enough love.
The best horror book ❤️
Hi Meg, I gotta say every time you say horror it makes me laugh coz it sounds like "whore" to me, which is hilarious 😉

I have not!! Bugs also freak me out 🫠
What is your favorite Jon Athan book? I've read a couple of them, but if you had to pick ONE, what would you pick?
Into the Wolves Den traumatized me the most so that one lol
