I'll definitely try this next time. Too often I'm going with the first shot I'm satisfied with or I too quickly give up on a subject that might become more interesting from a different angle 👍
Just wanted to say your videos/photos have really inspired me over the years and have made me want to get way more into outdoor photography. Love your photos tons and you are genuinely my favorite photographer. Keep up the great work!
Your sense of humour and tongue in cheek approach in this video was fun to hear and watch. You made valid points while entertaining. Stay safe and sane.
I’ve got to say, the GoPro looks beautiful and sounds pretty darn good for what it is! Enjoyable video as always. I’ve recently received my book I ordered, great add to the collection, love how you organize it.
"Process, not outcome"... a great philosophy! I enjoy giving myself different photo exercises as well, I find that it really helps engage my creativity and kick starts my imagination. Practice makes perfect, but be careful not to perfect bad habits. :) I love the camera lamps as well! Makes me wish I had kept my old 35mm camera bodies!
I've only just found your channel this last week. I've been binge watching your videos for ever since. At the moment I editing some photos and listening to this video. Really appreciate your work. It's been really inspiring. If you're ever looking for new places to photograph you should come to Romania. We have a lot of beautiful places.
Actually I tried a bit of this exercise last sunday but looking at the photographs in LR yesterday they all turned out like crap but it made me think out of the box and I had some fresh air and some exercise at least. 😊
Nice reminder to explore and area thoroughly instead of settling for the obvious shot. This is what drives my wife (who is quite patient most of the time) nuts. Definitely a process for when you are all alone and in the moment. Thanks for sharing.
James, funny thing. I remember you making a video about switching away from full frame because of the size. I just got a Z 6II which is a full frame camera and it's smaller than my previous APS-C body. Most of the lenses are smaller too. It's incredible.
Hello James. I love what you do. Glad that you could get outdoors. The ponies were nice. I like the puddle photos. The self-portrait shelter photo 7:10 is terrific because without other context it would make me pause to wonder what came before and after it.
great video James so much so as I finish this sentence I'm heading out to take photos. Lockdown and a busted ankle has killed any motivation I have but this is the boost I needed!!
The photos of the side lit ponies were amazing. I must admit though that my first instinct in that situation would have been to take a wider shot of them, sort of silhouetted in front of that beautiful sky
Thanks James. I’ll think of you when I’m out tomorrow. Just got your photo book from my wife for my birthday too, thank you for the signed copy, really made my day 😁
Good outing to improve your composition techniques I’d say. Office is shaping up nicely. Maybe an office tour with thoughts and decisions are in the future?
I thought the picture where you were looking out of the hole in the shelter was pretty funny 😁 Love the pony pictures! That camera light is great, didn't know there was such a thing!
This exercise is part of why I take the same route about 90% of the time I go out, why I'm glad I live in a city, and I'm glad some vintage lenses are so inexpensive. Plenty of small things around a city to get multiple angles of, taking the same route gives more chances to notice something new on it, and with the right lenses, even the big things or your usual things can be made to look different. I have 35mm for general purpose, a Samyang 18-28 f/4-4.5 for super wides (it's useless past 24mm except for lomography), and a Nikon 80-200 for telephoto shots out past 85mm. And those last two lenses cost me a total $122 combined. Good options for cheap makes this so much easier to get into (especially if you can't "zoom with your feet"), and using something older than you to do it adds a bit of fun.
@@JamesPopsysPhoto And good for making you learn to make use of hard light. So much so that I prefer it for anything outside that isn't portraits or snow.
I tried doing that this week after a long time and it worked! I often think like, if there is nothing obviously interesting, it's probably nothing there, maybe take a snapshot and move on. But the more "active" time you spend there with more trial and errors, more likely you'll end up with great shot :) although it still doesn't work every time 😅
OMG! Such AMAZING ideas! Thank you! I can't wait to go out tomorrow and give it a go! Where did you get that camera light? I WANT ONE!! LOL! But seriously, where can i buy it?
I need to stop watching your videos on days I have to work ( yes we are still working in Canada ). I get inspired to get out with my camera but then can’t. Thanks for continuing to inspire and provide great down to earth content. 😁
As always, very entertaining & highly informative. A difficult combo to pull off but you do it consistently well (IMHO). Must have been a long walk home in the disappearing light. Thanks for another well spent 15 minutes 👍😀.
TLDR: take more pics of stuff to increase chances of having better pics of stuff :). Or to phrase it more process like : Creativity often means avoiding the trap of investing too much in one idea and moving on. Force variation on a theme and you might surprise yourself with what comes out of it. Also a reason I avoid using a tripod (unless last resort, Astro work etc) is the tripod setup and tear down forces me into a mindset of investing too much in one idea.
Good video, like the exercise to be more creative. When you took a picture of the ponies what were your settings? I live near Dartmoor, we have lots of ponies but I cannot get the same detail of their fur like you did.
With an ultra wide, could’ve used the direction the snow is pointing and the cloud direction as a leading line to the ladder! Good one for ultra wide development you mentioned a few weeks back 🙂
Great video , James Do you think the g9 produces a film like photo (which I like ) ? Steve O’Nions who shoots mainly film said this in one of his videos
This is a beautiful place what is the name of the place I'm getting bored of my walk to Bryn pydew and conwy and need something new and brilliant video
If the equines come and say "hello", I think that you had more than a little Penderyn before you started up the hill, James. I've never heard of a person being drunk-in-charge of a tripod...🤔...😂
I'll work a good subject for about 20 or 30 minutes before I get burned out and move on. I did that this afternoon with a bridge while out cycling. (Glad I grabbed the G7x on the way out) The killer shot turned out to be one that I had expected to be way too backlit. Can never tell for sure which are the keepers until I see them on something bigger than 3" (excuse me... 7.5cm). I appreciate that you often show us your junk shots as examples.
Hi James, I have noticed that you often take photos at arms length. Is this just for the video or do you usually do this? I was told that you should hold the camera close to your body for stability. What is your take on this?
Hi James - I really enjoy you channel. One quick question - how are you capturing your (high quality) audio - I’m assuming it is captured independently from the GoPro video.
Please do a video on using only telephoto lenses for landscape photography. (If you’ve not already done one). Feel like i struggle with wide lenses to get separation and simplify my pictures, but telephoto seem to make things easier. Would really value your views on that if you ever decide to make a video on it.

Awesome isn't it! I'm too pumped :)
I have an old Nikon that I will think about doing that with. Great idea!
Absolutely great seeing your thought process in getting different types and angles. Thanks for making this video!
Thanks for watching mate :)

@@JamesPopsysPhoto thank you for putting out great stuff!
Thank you. So great to follow your thoughts while searching for compositions!! I'ld love to see more of that
Mate, this is the most you've used a tripod in any video EVER 😂
haha, I know! Killed me :)

Good exercise
I remember this scene from Nigel Danson's shots
This is such a good exercise. I definitely struggle with the "nothing fun to photograph" lately!
Welsh mountain ponies and snow. Awesome!
Love the horses! Such beautiful art. Thank you for sharing. 😃
Thanks so much for watching 😃
Man, your are FANTASTIC James! I enjoy your videos a lot!
thanks James, always look forward to your videos!
Thanks for watching Lisa :)
Great video James!
Thanks mate!
Awesome video I could watch it for hours
Great vid! Great way to overcome the “I can’t see anything worth shooting today.” mindset.
Simple but nice images there James, also great use of the tripod..
Cheers Andy! 😃
Saturday just got a bit better 👍🏻
Third week of the new year I still haven’t used my camera, you inspired me ( or made me feel guilty) to go out tomorrow.

If anybody had been wondering what a James Popsys RPG video game would look like, this video provides the answer. Also: The pony shots are sweet.
The pony’s ‘were’ awesome and that camera lamp is extremely cool!
James: I will pretend to blow into my hands to warm them up
Also James: actually blows into his hands to warm them up
😂😂
I also do this. I call is dissecting my subject and completely exhaust every possible POV.
I think the shelter ones look rather good. I liked them.
Nice idea there, using the time lapse mode. I have not tried that with my G9, maybe tomorrow I will. Thanks
"no skill involved in this shots" proceeds to take an amazing shot of a poni. Damn, I need to get better at taking photos :(
