A2 996 IN STEAM! this is the only video ive been able to find of it in light steam, light steam as in it never moved under its own power from the wharf of echuca
Thanks Scott for capturing a piece of our history. Enjoyed it immensely & love rail history. Might try & take a trip. Thinking of visiting the Railway Friendly Bar or Kuranda Station. Once again thanks
Im a train buff I love everything trains and this series really got my attention not only did it have trains but it revealed the history behind the australian railways I just want to say thanks to the uploader for uploading the series on youtube when this series aired on tv I missed two episodes and haven't been able to find this series anywhere I really wanted to see the episode in which Scott Mcgregor traveled in NSW and now finally I have seen it after so many years searching many thanks to the uploader
18:50 The rail motor referred to here is a 620/720-class rail motor of early 1960s vintage. The crossing is Meredith Street, immediately east of Civic Station. As of Xmas, 2014, this part of the line no longer exists due to an act of OUTRIGHT TREASON by the NSW State Liberal Government. The line now terminates at Wickham.
This is a neat way to introduce Australian railways to American rail lovers. They’ll even find some of the locomotive and rolling stock designs to be similar to some of their locomotives and rolling stock. That’s because Australian trains were influenced by both American and British designs.
Thanks for posting this. I first saw it in the early 90s after Mom had a massive stroke. She LOVED trains and train journeys. Used to work for the old 'O and W' in NY during the war (the BIG one - WW2). I taped this for her right off PBS and we used to watch it several times per week (some of Mom's short-term memory went with the stroke). Special thanks to Scott. I'll be checking his site for the DVDs! :-)
Great video! Once saw a segment of this on PBS years ago. Haven't seen this in years!!!!!!!! Memories right here!!!!!!!! I need this on DVD, but I'm in the USA.
That's okay. All I wanted to do was fins the music that I have been trying to find for a long time. Posting the entire episode of this tv show is something that I think is an outstanding feat upon it's own. Good job.
What an absolutely fascinating journey across a continent. Scott was great in bringing back the magic of old times.Sad that much of the remains are in ruins ; but then that's the price of modernisation. It's heartening to know that there are so many people labouring to preserve history . Imagine travelling by camels ! The railways must survive , it's not just the nostalgia ; isn't it a way of life ?
1:52:00 A sequence from the film, "For The Term Of...." was shot at Stockton, NSW, in a section along the western side of the township called "The Dolphins" as it had several wharves along what was known also as the Ballast Ground as it was made up of ballast brought by sailing ships and dumped there as they waited their turn to load Newcastle and Hunter Valley coal. Some of that "ballast" was rubble from the San Francisco earthquake of very early in the 20th Century.
Great documentary! - Australia, what a country! (Had my longest haul by air from Sydney - up to Oslo, Norway, with lots of pitstops along the route . . . . . . )👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Remember when I was like 7, my grandad saw an advert in the paper and ordered the series for me. Still got them, shame I don't have a VHS player lol Thank you for sharing this :D
A DVD version exists although its has some bits edited out from what originally aired and is interlaced film - you may to be able to find the box set in an ABC store here shop.abc.net.au/products/greatest-railway-adventu-6dvd
Been a long 20 years since I first saw this, thanks for the upload. I reckon that this was made for a US audience with frequent references to US cities and states, as well as regular use of the Imperial usage of the Imperial measuring system in the narration.
Was great to watch a different version of this wonderful documentary. I have it on a DVD Box Set, and there are certainly differences between the DVD and this VHS Tape. There are scenes that are not seen on DVD, and some sequences are different, and some of Scott's audio commentary is different as well. This goes for nearly 2 hrs, where as each episode on the DVD, goes for an hour each. So certainly nice to see a different version of the same documentary.
I loved this series when I was a kid and still do except there's a few pieces been cut out of the episodes like the Waldon train society I think anyway its still a great insight to what was there 15 years ago
28:00 Take note, America! The driver of this rail motor set said "Zed", not "Zee". The driver, Michael Forbes, is no relation to me. By the way, the Zig-Zag railway is no longer operating.
Dear doctor of a Australian geography,:Back Pain4 tv. This is a excellent document gift which the grandfather gave both you and viewers. I recommend that you submit the video to the offical government so that It willt be a national document . It make us moving because of a beautiful Australian scenery taken by the camcorder. Sometimed this video explains the life of train inside such as foods sleeping facility. Old pictures relating to the construction days.,colonial fortress.ww2 japanese war soldier cemetry. Many kinds of train such as steam engines diesel engine train.Rail construction Engineering such as Rail road. Various bridge. Tunnel. .old city pictures of Sydney , endless horizon. Queensland ,South Wales, South Australia ,,,East Australia Brisbane> sydney>peterborough >adelaide>alisspring>katherine>cook> kalgoorle>Perth >Tazmanis .Thanks for your posting. 🍀🍀
Fantastic series to watch as a kid, but I could never grasp who wrote the music or, on that note, any information regarding the soundtracks. They sure are good. Would you know (by any chance) the artist of the music?
really really surprised that theres no steam train called the Errol Flynn ? a real old fashioned swashbuckler of a beast breathing smoke and flames ( and, a true born australian ) although lets stick to steam, not Battery with Points ( hint, look him up on wiki )
Good Doco, but TRAINS DO NOT GO TO THE GOLD COAST....you get a train to Varsity Lakes, that a Bus from there to the Gold Coast...........it is a 3 hour journey from Brisbane to Surfers Paradise by train or a 90 minute car drive.
Varsity Lakes is just south of the Gold Coasts city centre (Robina). If you want to go to surface then get off at Nerang or Helensvale. FYI surface isn't the Gold Coast (its north Gold Coast) nor is it the the city centre or the CBD. The Gold Coast has no CBD. The only person who think is itCBD is the mayor (Tom Tate) who has major financial interests in making the shit hole that is surface the CBD.
+articulatedloco its not " way out of sync" - it drifts out of sync.... probably from VBR audio when captured if your so good - why don't you fix it, and re-upload it
Typical Qld: wouldn't make room for a passenger on train. Whereas in WA, she said, "Did u think we'd leave u behind?" One good thing re Sydney interstate: leaves from main city station, 'n' departs Platform 1 Melbourne hospitality
I remember watching this on the PBS affiliate in Tulsa, OK back in about 2001-2002. I was 11
Oh my goodness I thought I was the only one who watched this in 2001 on Sky. I've been searching for it for years.
A proper comprehensive documentary on Australian Rail/rail history . Better than anything else on Australian Rail on TH-cam.
A2 996 IN STEAM! this is the only video ive been able to find of it in light steam, light steam as in it never moved under its own power from the wharf of echuca
And many many thanks to Scott McGregor for making this wonderful and inspiring documentary of Railway Adventures Across Australia
Thanks Scott for capturing a piece of our history. Enjoyed it immensely & love rail history. Might try & take a trip. Thinking of visiting the Railway Friendly Bar or Kuranda Station. Once again thanks
Makes want to buy a railway carriage and live in it.

I always love the soundtrack to this

This was a real quality program
Absolutely excellent so much enjoyment

This is my childhood right here
I used to work on the Hotham Valley Railway as a troubador providing entertainment on the journey to Pinjarra.
Great documentary! - Australia, what a country! (Had my longest haul by air from Sydney - up to Oslo, Norway, with lots of pitstops along the route . . . . . . )👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Scott has got to be Australia's number one rail buff. With apologies to the late Tim Fisher MP.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful film. Truly delightful.
Saw this when I was about 9. Really good to watch it again. Thanks for uploading it
Scott signed on to TH-cam and posted his thanks for someone posting the opening theme. I tried finding the DVDs through Magma but no luck.
What a gorgeous man, classic Aussie.

great video :)
Watched this when I was 4 or 5, mum taped it, still have the tapes somewhere :)
The Murwillumbah line (Byron Bay) has been closed for around 10 years but there are now pushes to re open it as a Gold Coast service.
A lot of those line Scott travelled on in this series would be gone by now.
This is an annotated version too - some stuff originally aired has been cut out.
I have this all on VHS but it's been put into storage while our house is being built. So I had to search it up instead.
Yeah this was shown on tv on a local channel in California, I am really surprised they kept 2 hours worth of stuff for a USA release.
Byron shire has really gone down hill in the past 25 years
28:00 Take note, America! The driver of this rail motor set said "Zed", not "Zee". The driver, Michael Forbes, is no relation to me. By the way, the Zig-Zag railway is no longer operating.
@phillyslasher No, we say "Zed" and that IS the correct name for the final letter of the Alphabet.
Great video mate.
i grew up on this
Me too
Same here!

Unfortunately the line on which Byron Bay Station was located closed in 2004.
No clue, I was kinda hoping that TH-cam's music id thing would turn up something. But no luck.

Fantastic series to watch as a kid, but I could never grasp who wrote the music or, on that note, any information regarding the soundtracks. They sure are good. Would you know (by any chance) the artist of the music?
Yes; new stations not much character and don't attract - plus so far out of city
Fantastic those jarrah and karri trees - been there.
I'd hate to see the safety gurus we have today watch his jumping on and off moving vehicles...
taking trains on the fly is a well known practice
Woodstock - Royal Hotel/Parkes Street
Can you get these on dvd?
I have a DVD set of it
My Dad recorded this for me
Amazing that the colonies couldn't sort out how far to put their rails apart - its a mess that still causes problems
really really surprised that theres no steam train called the Errol Flynn ? a real old fashioned swashbuckler of a beast breathing smoke and flames ( and, a true born australian ) although lets stick to steam, not Battery with Points ( hint, look him up on wiki )

You can transfer from bus to tram at Helensvale, which can take you to the Gol Coast

Thanks for the short-sighted government. Now we got bike trails instead of actual railway.
Way out of sync. Speech hopelessly out with picture. So easy to get it right.
+articulatedloco its not " way out of sync" - it drifts out of sync.... probably from VBR audio when captured

it pronounced newcassel, yu pom
