Paul is heavily influenced by Enya. In fact, he used to work at a record store in Arvada, CO called Black and Read. He typically worked the opening shift, and so he generally worked solo, until the afternoon. I’ve always preferred digging for records with little to no people around, so the AM hours were my go to.
Anyway, every single morning, Paul would put on 1 of 2 Enya records, before any other music was played at the store. Watermark and Shepherd Moons. I loved it, and actually started taking my mid morning coffee break from work, at the record shop, just to listen to Enya with Paul.
The atmospheric textures in in almost all of Blood Incantation’s work is heavily influenced by Enya, and you can hear it all over this new record.

Best thing about the album: its going to destroy the algorithms that make up a Spotify radio playlist. Imagine plugging in Eno and that going into Blood Incantation then back out to Can or Tangerine Dream. Ain't gonna happen. Great band, great stylistic move - fucken love all of it! Thanks Banger, thanks Sarah!

As a metalhead and a synth nerd, seeing BI make such a gloomy, spiraling, and lush album after their first two offerings is such an inspirational treat. And thank you for reading off some the gear they used, I had no idea a Moog Grandmother was on the album.

album is nice. it’s probably fun for them to make music that’s a little different from all the metal stuff they have been cranking out. if people don’t like spacey ambient stuff they won’t like this. it is what it is. i enjoy it but wasn’t blown away, whereas some other similar sounding records have been some of my favorites. i can’t wait for them to put out another metal album though. something in the middle ground of this record and their previous stuff would be sick

I was just about to put this album on for the 50th time while going to sleep. When I saw there was a BangerTV review I thought it might get treated as a joke. But holy smokes thank you! Very informative and inspiring for a non-ambient listener and for someone like myself who loves both ‘extremes’ (metal and ambient) this is such a revelation. You really did this so much justice.

    Greetings from Taiwan.
Firstly, and most importantly, I'm not trying to start a flame war or any controversy with my following comments. Merely providing an opinion. Please be kind should you so choose to comment or reply.
I'm sorry, but I feel I have to say this. This is Banger's Overkill Reviews.... Now, while I can go from listening to Archspire to King Crimson to Todd Rundgren to Victor Wooten (I'm extremely eclectic in my listening choices, including a certain Banger presenter's band, Smoulder) I just can't believe that this February 25th, which saw a veritable slew of a wide swath of genres of metal get released that not a single actual metal album was reviewed or "shout(ed) out"
We saw the likes of Allegaeon, Scorpions, Tygers of Pan Tang, Godless Truth, Deathhammer, Corpsegrinder, Serious Black, HammerFall, Naxatras, Venator.... and there were more, but you surely get the point. Could not one of these have been shouted out, at the very least? On a channel that's supposed to be all about the headbanging?
I fully understand and respect the desire to introduce your audience to new styles of music - that's practically the entire raison d'etre for my TH-cam channel. I've gone from covering Ænigmatum to covering Thundercat to Dan Fogelberg to Chick Corea to Atheist to David Sanborn to ELP to Queen to Wilderun and on and on....
And please don't misunderstand - I enjoyed today's review and Sarah, you did a phenomenal job with presenting it. But while I share your appreciation of this album and the genre, I just don't think it fit for Overkill Reviews. Blood Incantation is a band I can enjoy & I do find this new release a fine experiment (if not extremely daring for them as well!), but it just isn't heavy or metal... My channel was created with the sole intent of genre-busting to explore outside of expectations any viewer might bring to the table...but I come to Banger specifically for heavy music. Couldn't you at least have done the Blood Incantation review and followed it up with some shout outs that might have given your viewers some actual heavy sounds to explore? Sure, I'm glad you name-dropped Tangerine Dream & Goblin - I've been a huge fan for a long while - and while they are exquisitely masterful in the prog-rock cum soundtrack arena, couldn't that have led to at least mentioning something a tad heavier in the shout outs?
Sarah, I have great respect for you and how wonderfully you present in all your videos (I only wish I could be 1/8 the presenter you are in my videos, but I'm a one-man show and I try to do the best I can within as small a timeframe as I can and I know I make flubs frequently...all to my shame. But I always try to improve.) I enjoy your band and wish you tremendous success. You deserve to have your star rise, and you have a lovely singing voice.
May peace and prosperity be upon you and all those you hold dear.

It's such an awesome time to be in love with music. I feel like genre barriers and borders between scenes are being torched. Especially in terms of festival line-ups (Oblivion Access, Primavera, etc). This BI record has so much potential to fold those who're open to it, and unfamiliar with it, into a whole new world. I've loved ambient music and electronic music in general ever since my brother first blew my brain with Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works series and Brian Eno/David Byrne's "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts". I second the "Phaedra" recommendation. For me, it's like the "Sad Wings of Destiny" of ambient music. It's been interesting watching people and publications who more often review metal records grapple with reviewing this one. You did a tremendous job here, Sarah!

  • @FriedliebK
    @FriedliebK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'd give it 5/5. The blu-ray comes with a wonderful 5.1 surround mix of the album, truly immersive experience! There are different sounds coming from all corners and sometimes a note dances from one speaker to the next - nothing too flashy though, just beautiful. I listened to it 5 times in a row now. It's very focused on the drone, much more cohesive than the ambient albums by WITTR and Neptunian Towers (Fenriz). Lately I listen to a lot of stuff that comes out on the Cryo Chamber label ("the last resort" by Beyond the Ghost was my personal rabbit hole into this - if you dig the Blade Runner soundtrack, you'll definitely love this)

I enjoyed the review - and I want to offer this thought - It's strange to me that a review won't include criticisms. My thought is that a review should always include your critique of the music in full. Because that was omitted it feels a bit like we're pulling punches here because we want to offset potential backlash that any risk taking metal will invariably encounter. I have yet to listen to it but I am going to do that immediately. I enjoy synth, ambient, death metal, and of course blood incantation. That said, from a commercial standpoint it's a bold ass move to release this record and I really hope it isn't a permanent shift as I do rather like their brand of cavernous third-eye-open death metal! Really appreciate the shine you put on foundational artists, and the master John Carpenter (who can do no wrong in my book). As an aside, I really appreciate how cerebral your review style is - check out the big brain on brad indeed. Thanks for the review.

Bought the album without even hearing a second of it. When I heard they were releasing this ambient album I jumped with joy as they have already used it in their other recordings and I got a load of albums by Tangerine Dream and Vangelis already. So there was no doubt that I would like this. It may not be for every Death Metal fan but go ahead give it a try and expand your musical horizons. The band picture in the vinyl gatefold reminded me of Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii - I think that's what it was meant to do.

Wow what a great review! Finally had time to listen to this record and then watch the review. I wasn’t sure what to think of it before listening. It really really hits a different stride in an exceptional way. I will be revisiting and utilizing this for the rest of my life, based on exactly what you described in the history and emotional application. I’ve been dabbling with using guitar pedals that explore instrumental/ambient/noise related music. This is automatically an inspiration. I’d love BI to out more of this type of stuff out, because it’s both really good and they sincerely love it.

I hadn't heard of this band until today. I probably wouldn't have listened to them if they hadn't done this electronic album even though I was heavily into death metal back in 1990. On a first listen its OK, I don't feel a terrible urge to buy it but it may grow on me later. I'd like to recommend Jacco Gardner's Somnium album to those who did like this and other more chill music. He went from being a whimsical Syd Barrett type vocalist to being a synth player so I feel his take on space music has way more musical involvement.

Could you see them touring this album? Maybe on lineups for New Music festivals? The decision to go full ambient is contextualized by the uncertainty of touring today. I saw BI on that tour w Immolation and it was amazing. Miss those days. As much as i love the last album, I'd be so crushed if i couldn't see a live show of a new abum that's an evolution of HHHR. Here's the thing. We all know that Blood Incantation was coordinated and invested PR campaign and severely over-hyped. The latest trend is to call serious metal critics trolls, haters, gatekeepers etc - it is not cool. Blood Incantation is NOT innovative or executed well. If you said Imperial Triumphant, Contrarian, Gorguts, Ulcerate, Spiral Architect, bands that have really taken metal forward, I would join in on the hype. This OSDM hype is embarrassing for the genre.

My homie fucking loves this band and then this dropped and he kinda went on a rant about it and I gave it a try and I fucking loved it . So relaxing especially laying in bed at night and playing it full blast in my ears and just letting my imagination free .

Excellent review. I would replace the coffee with a nice cup of masala chai or Assam though (no hint of which country I am from there). Ea 3+4 wrap this album up beautifully.

Great review! Didn’t know that Stormkeep shared members with Blood Incantation. It completely makes sense, though.
If anyone is looking for more Dark Ambient, try Cryo Chamber and Atrium Carceri. Atrium is the mastermind behind the label, and, his music is absolutely the best of the best.
Peace and respect. Stay space. 🙏🏻👽

Devin Townsend's made a bunch of ambient music over the years as well. Worth checking out if you like the sound.

Love how you’re pushing the DS agenda via ambient/krautrock worship, keep it up. By the way I’ve never watched these videos because I always thought they were cheesy af but your review of this record changed that for me. Cheers from Texass

There should be no limits or restrictions on any music. That’s how death metal was created in the first place.

Nice review, Tangerine Dreams Zeit is the closest in mood to this wonderful Blood Incantation record. It's unfair that Enos beautiful Music for Airports gets credit for inventing ambient because their was so much that came before, especially Zeit and early Popol Vuh.

The only way to make waves with an ambient album without a backing movie is to ride your popularity from other projects. So it makes sense to release under their band name. Either your fans like it ( which we do) or the controversy gives press. Well played BI

Finally listened to it. Being a fan of ambient, I'd say it's an okay album. Not bad but not great either. I like it when rock and metal bands experiment with music outside their expertise as it often yields unusual results or even create a new subgenre. But for this album, I feel like they did not really add anything new or exciting to the genre. Far from the feeling I felt when I first heard Ulver - Shadows of the Sun. Furthermore, some parts of this album sounds too cheesy (more on the choice of notes/chords and not the synth sound) that it prevents me from trying to meditate which is what I usually do when listening to ambient.

This album has me thinking back to Senjitsu from Iron Maiden due to the controversy. I’ve yet to finish this album, but I really think you’re supposed to be on mushrooms or acid when listening to this. More entrancing that way!

    Very Nice Review!
This álbum was not what i was hoping for BI. i respect the bold movement, but its a NO for me.
I like frequential things, and this can be the subject of this whole thing. My point is the ressonance affects the Brain immediately and here lies the danger. We Just dont know what this emissions do, and the result can be exhaustion, sadness, confusion blablabla....
    I advise caution.

Using phrases like "haters and crybabies" to describe detractors of this change in musical direction is pretty lame. That said, kudos to the band for trying something different.

I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Not disappointed at all that it is a 100% ambient recording. All the vibes are totally Blood Incantation, it sounds like a Blood Incantation album, minus guitar, bass and drums. In fact, if you listen close enough, you can catch these vibes on their EP and two full length albums. They're hard to hear on a first listen, but dig in and you'll hear them. Timewave Zero has a very cinematic feel, almost Vangelis-like, especially Vangelis' work on the Blade Runner soundtrack. Blood Incantation just forgot to make the movie to go along with the soundtrack.
