  • @jml8238

    Two pointers for Brad:
-Shawn lost his daughter several months after the album was recorded.
    - Shawn is most likely the voice heard during My Pain. He has a tendency to make spoken word appearances that kinda always feel off on some of Slipknot's albums. (see Danger Keep Away, Be prepared for Hell).
I agree with Brad on most of the points he's made in this review. The album could be shorter (2 songs + 2 intros shorter). The weird vocals also threw me off when Solway Firth came on but I guess it is typical Slipknot to do weird stuff musically. I also agree that it is their most cohesive album since Vol.3. The mix is an updated version of .5 which was a bit sterile.
IMO, All Out Life is better-off as a stand-alone single because it doesn't contain enough experimental elements to fit properly with the other songs on this album. It also feels out of place as a bonus track right after Solway Firth. Killer song though!!!
That being said: It's great to see that Slipknot proved the naysayers wrong by not only still being around 20 years after that crazy eponymous album (something even THEY didn't think they could pull off back then) but also by putting out a solid new album that's challenging enough to keep their fans interested while still being too extreme for the mainstream.

The vocal rhythm at the beginning of “Solway Firth” uses a rhythm called the scotch snap. It’s basically a short staccato note followed immediately by a long note. (I only know this because I’m a nerd and a percussionist with two music degrees). So you can hear it when he says “killerrrrrrrs”, etc.
This rhythm is a mainstay in Strathspey which is a form of dance named after a region in Scotland. The title “Solway Firth” is also named after an water inlet connect the coasts of England and Scotland. So this leads me to believe that the rhythmic choice, since it is so odd and unlike anything Corey has done with Slipknot, was a cheeky, intentional nod to the song’s namesake.

Agreed. Vol. 3 is the magnum opus. The wrath of Iowa is met with mature songwriting and the result is Slipknot's Master of Puppets if you will. Heavy, but also takes the time to brood, doesn't treat melody like an enemy, dark and unapologetic. It's really one of the best metal albums ever IMO.

I say best since Iowa. Being someone that had been following them since they exploded on the scene.. vol. 3 just hit me the wrong way (minus pulse).. this new album though.. it brought back the feeling the original albums did.. that energy and this fuck you I dont give a fuck what you think vibe.. and its nostalgic and satisfying. Nothing will ever compare to those "first" two albums auditorily but the conceptualized, experimental, intense, dark, angry feel to this album captures the essence that drew me in 20 years ago. I'm here for it

Didn’t even know Corey stated that this would be their best since Vol. 3 because that’s exactly what I said after listening to this album. I pretty much enjoy this album front to back. I love what they did with the interludes and how they have purpose rather than just being unnecessary filler. My Pain was really the only song I didn’t care for at first, but I slowly grew to kind of enjoy. Slipknot have always had that one super experimental song (Prosthetics, Gently, The Virus of Life) and while My Pain still isn’t one of my favorites, I do appreciate the song a lot more now. I’d say my biggest flaw with this album is the fact that All Out Life was included on the album which it should’ve been. I feel like I can safely say that this probably the most boundary pushing album from the group mainly because it doesn’t sound anything like their last two albums. Vol. 3 is still my favorite album of theirs with Iowa being a close second, but I think that WANYK beats out the self-titled for me.

I don't like it. I honestly prefer Vol. 5 over WANYK, but hey that's just me. The album does have a bunch of great songs such as Solway Firth, Red Flag and Birth of The Cruel, but I couldn't stand the choruses of the other songs. Although I can agree, it's a pretty heavy album!

Totally fair review. Everybody's kissing Slipknot's as right now. They're a good band. But I agreed that it sounded a bit elementary. I'd love to hear them go back and do something suuuper hard, but I get it-they've got to try to sell records. Dont know how far I can dig them without Joey, who is arguably one of THE best drummers in music today. But kudos to them for keeping it going! Also, my heart really goes out to Clown regarding his daughter's passing. So so very sad. My heart and prayers are with him and his family.

I used to only listen to Metallica when it came to metal. We Are Not Your Kind" is the album that introduced me and opened me up to the world of heavier metal. It an amazing album in my opinion. It currently sits at my 6th favourite album of all time, and my 2nd favourite metal album behind Rammstein's "Mutter".

This is actually the first Slipknot album I'be bought since vol3. I liked the occasional songs from the albums between then, and this latest release, but overall just didn't like the direction they took. I agree that this album grows on you. The more i listen to it, the more of it i find myself liking. For me Critical Darling has been a favourite.

I agree with basically everything that was said in this review. Very well done review, and very nicely articulated.
I’ve been listening to this album and have been so happy with how it’s grown on me. It really does kick ass, big time, and for a band that has been around as long as Slipknot, and after major member changes, that is just amazing.
I also have been thinking “this is easily their best since vol 3”, and sometimes even “best since Iowa”.
I definitely have not heard Corey’s scream sound so good since Iowa, that’s for sure. And one thing I haven’t heard much comment on, is the production of the album. I would say that sonically this would have to be the best slipknot has ever sounded.
Thank you Slipknot. It’s so great that this album is actually good. It has renewed my faith in heavy music, and creativity.

A really well written script here: lots of good info and insights throughout with a lots of lines that are very articulate and measured. I feel like I have a solid grasp of what this project is and what makes it different from previous projects and metal trends generally, and that's really cool seeing as I'm not someone particularly familiar with Slipknot. Big kudos from me!

I consider this album Iowa's more introverted younger brother. It does have Iowa-esque heavy parts, but all sorts of great experimentation balanced with memorable/anthemic choruses that are just good for singing along too. Honestly, probably my favorite album from them. Their whole album vision mixed with Banger after Banger makes thus album close to my heart

Great review, I hoped you will do a review of this album and here it is, thanks. In my opinion the last two albums (this one and .5 the gray chapter) are the best records of this band. I'm a fan of this band for more than 10 years and they never released a bad record (all hope is gone is their weakest one, but even this album has great songs) and with "we are not your kind" they show once more how their music evolved and got perfectonized. What I like the most are the experiments they did on the new one, without losing the typical slipknot elements (rawness, heavy drums/can beats, corey's vocals between harsh/shouting and calm/clean vocals). Spiders reminded me of Marilyn Manson, which is good because I like this band too and "my pain" is the most experimental song, which I also like.
What I like the most is Corey's voice. When I listen to metal music and I get to know new bands, I wait for the vocals because when their bad, the music can be as good as it wants to be, but I will not listen to it when the singer sucks. So Corey matches the balance between hard and soft vocals so perfectly, great examples for that are the songs "unsainted" and "solway firth".

Pretty spot on review, I agree with the good and bad parts. I do love how they incorporate all instruments on way more songs. Being a drummer I'll never get tired of extra percussion in songs, and Slipknot use them in such an effective way to give songs like Nero Forte and Critical Darling extra groove and extra heavyness. Slipknot having 3 drummers is one of the things that Drew me to them and it's still amazing how with all that percussion they make each note mean something. Like every accent is right where it's supposed to be. Definitely the best album since Vol 3 and I can't wait to see them live again.

I picked up We Are Not Your Kind mainly because my son is a mega fan and I knew he would ask my opinion on it. That opinion is pretty much in-line with Brad's above though I think he liked it slightly more than I did. Best since Vol 3? Sure because my first thought was WANYK is Vol 3 2.0 or maybe more like 1.5 since Vol 3 is the better of these 2 albums. In the end the lyrics at times are a little too juvenile, some of the musical decisions are a bit silly and when the album finished I was glad it did. This one won't get a lot of replay from me since I have Iowa and Vol 3 and those are better albums.

I do like Liar's Funeral, I feel like it's the closest I'm going to get to Gently since '01. Even then, I get impatient and want to skip ahead to the drop. Less singy, more creepy. Glad Corey is rapping again though! His raps and their weirdly timed hooks and choruses was what I was looking for the most listening to wanyk, and they delivered. Not as good as #1 and #2, better than all hope and gray, and definitely shoulder to shoulder with subliminal. I'll take it, they're all mostly sober now, what is there to expect?

Thoughts on this album have changed with each listen. Feel like this review was fair, if not a bit forgiving to the permeating stone sour-ness. Each 'good' song was kinda like a microcosm for the whole album - largely good with some little things out of place. Really was not feeling the interludes popping through the album, didn't add anything for me.

I knew you guys were gonna review this.
I love it, it's heavy, it's dark, it's experimental, and yes, I agree with Corey, it's the band's best record since "The Subliminal Verses".
However, as the media is saying, I don't think it's the band's best album ever, I still think that distinction goes to "Iowa", which is not only heavy, dark and experimental, but it's also fucking ugly, visceral, intense, self-destructive at times. The band has said in many interviews ever since those years, that the band was going through a tough period of booze, drugs, parties, depression, self-destructive tendencies and that as a whole they all were in a "bad and dark place" and you can actually hear that on "Iowa", not in "We are not your kind". For me, personally, this is their second best record.
    Cheers from Mexico, Brad.

Slipknot is one of my favorite bands of all time, but I have to admit, Corey has a really big mouth and the Iowa claim was way too bold. That being said, this album is really their best since Vol. 3.
My favorite thing about this album was how each member had a moment to shine. In past Slipknot songs, there’s songs where either the extra percussion or the samples or the DJ dont do much or are completely sidelined, hence the ongoing joke that they have way too many useless members.
In this album though, everyone participated in every song to their fullest extent, wether its Craig’s samples, Sid’s scratches or Clown and Mystery Man’s percussion and keg hits. To me that participation of all 9 members at once is what makes Slipknot unique among other metal bands where there is this bizarre mix of sounds that come together and it just works for some reason.
I really do believe this is Slipknot at their creative best. Nero Forte, Critical Darling, Solway Firth, Unsainted and Orphan are all amazing songs that belong right in their live set. There are moments however where some things stretch out for too long like My Pain and Spiders and the transition tracks. That said, I really love this album and its gonna be a real challenge for them to top it.

Darth SnewSnew I mean I agree with this but I also feel like people read into the Iowa thing a bit too much. People should realize that the Iowa album was a representation of the band at that time. Lots of young angry dudes who had tough lives namely Corey. Now they are successful famous rich older guys with families. They may have some anger from the problems everyone has in life but it’s not the same thing and it never will be. They grew up and matured and I think it’s reflected in their sound.

  • @usernamesareforidiot
    @usernamesareforidiot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I really don't understand how anyone could possibly think this album matches the heaviness and ferocity of IOWA. That album is just an absolute beast from beginning to end and Slipknot hasn't been that heavy ever since. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I just don't get how people are making that comparison. Even when IOWA slows down like on Gently, it's still incredibly menacing.
My only issue with this album is that there are a fair amount of sung melodies that I just really don't care for. A lot of them have a happy sounding melody that just clashes with Slipknot for me. They've come a long way from sounding like they hate the world.
I still have a ton of respect for one of the few extreme metal bands that have broken through and I couldn't think of a better gateway band to get people into death metal, thrash, black metal, etc.

Would disagree that this is their best since Vol.3, All Hope is Gone is so underrated and is the last "true" Slipknot album if you want to call it that.
