Because that was a nice episode illustrating Steven's character, as a half-gem half-human, who has to help out the town when it's struggling with electricity and help out the gems when the gems are struggling with an upcoming threat. He helped both the gems and humans! My favourite character is Amethyst, as she's the most relatable one for me in a personal way.

It’s fun to go back to when Ruby interacts with Steven and see the things she says. First she is angry saying “don’t look at me” because she doesn’t want Steven to be spoiled on Garnet being a fusion. She also says she “can’t see” likely because she was trying to do future vision but can’t while not Garnet.
If you think about it, this completely changes how you see Garnet. No longer is she the stoic friend, silent in the background. Now she is two friends who stay in the back making out, only pausing when there is something important to say.
That's really not how fusion works. Fusion is a visual representation of a relationship and its many forms. No two fusions are the exact same as each other: Garnet is a romantic fusion, Stevonnie is a platonic fusion.

this is the biggest episode for Season 1 for sure. It explains why Garnet has many abilities, such as swimming in molten things, as revealed in "Giant Woman" when she needed to acquire the Earth Beetle, and the fact that she is tall.
Also, since we know that Garnet has future vision according to a season one episode, I'm going to point out that Ruby says "I can't see" after Steven lets her out of her cell. I personally think she was trying to use future vision at that moment, but it didn't work. If that's the case then it's a minor but fun detail.

There were clues that Garnet was a fusion in the original run people did theorize it. The big one being that she has two gems. But going through it the first time nobody knows the rules about gems. Also her reaction to Steven and Connie fusing, the grin on her face at her little boys first fusion. And her advice to them, she knew what she was talking about. And in the same episode her flex when she says Fusion isn't hard for her.
What actually did it for me was that when Garnet opens the temple door, both the red and blue gems on the door light up. It made me look for other clues. The two gems on either hand are different cuts, and neither is red or blue, but rather both are a reddish purple. When we saw the other fusions the same thing happened, with all the fusion's gems changing to the same color. That had me and my watch group on the lookout when Alexandrite broke into four shapes initially instead of 3, so we rewound and paused. This episode still rocked us though because getting that kind of confirmation that you figured out the sneaky hints feels so dang good.
The fact that the two gems that fused to make her are basically lesbians is cool considering it means Sugar and the Crewniverse said, "Screw it," to homophobic parents and critics.

The Crewniverse cleverly put hints about Garnet being a fusion (now called being a permafusion), beginning of course that she was the only Gem we saw with two gemstones. There were things like Garnet saying "not for me" when Amethyst said that fusion was difficult. When Alexandrite broke apart in Fusion Cuisine, for a brief instant they had the silhouettes of Ruby and Sapphire appearing before coming back together as Garnet; nobody outside the Crewniverse knew this until after Jailbreak and some fans went back to Fusion Cuisine and went frame by frame to spot any clues.
90% of viewers leave within 5-10 seconds of the reaction ending so it hurts the videos performance leaving it in but we left this one in as it’s a finale wrap up and only right but going forward likely not sadly as that’s what the audience dictates!

This episode makes S1 worth watching twice only if it is to catch the clues about Garnet being a fusion LOL, I still remember the hundreds of videos theorizing about and against it. Also Lapis' theme really hits hard when she's dragging them both to the depths of the ocean, Steven Universe's use of leifmotifes is one of the best I've ever seen. Lapis and Jasper's fusion has a name, and the gem after which is named has very interesting properties when interacting with water, it's in the credits of the episode if you want to look it up 👀
I'm the same, Garnet quickly became my favorite character because she's the one that is always so happy for Steven. She is a proper mother, she's firm when she needs to be but also encourages Steven to just be Steven. I don't know if I have a favorite episode, but I do love the song Garnet sings in this finale.
Favorite Character: I do love Pearl very much, but I would have to say (looking at the series from start to finish including the movie and Steven Universe Future) that Rose Quartz is my favorite. Her character arc is just so fascinating in how it's told. You'll notice when you get farther into the series that we only first meet Rose when she's done developing as a mature character, so the only way we can get more information on her is if we see her past--before having Steven. As a result, the storytelling for Rose is reversed. As Steven grows in the present, Rose becomes less mature as we go further and further into the past. I'm so charmed by Rose and the beauty in how she says things and sees the world at the end of her development, and I love how she acts as we see her further and further back in the past. I haven't seen a character encompass such radical change across a series before (except maybe one, but I'm not naming names just in case it would spoil anything). I'll be able to give a more complete answer when we're probably halfway through season 5, but it'll be a while before then.
Fun little extra detail for Garnets song, if you go back to Sapphire's song earlier it is the same melody but at a slower and softer pace. Also seriously go have a look at the lyrics again - there is soooo much depth. As for favorite characters: Of the Crystal Gems it HAS to be BETWEEN Amithist and Garnet; Humans - Connie or Sadie.
S5 SPOILERS Rainbow Quartz 2.0, the Fusion of Steven and Pearl, uses masculine and gender neutral pronouns. As far as I know, he is the only Gem that uses masculine pronouns. Steg (Steven and Greg) is also male, but is primarily human as opposed to being a Gem.

if you asked me my favorite s1 episode back when the show was airing, i would have definitely said something like ocean gem or warp tour (both are great episodes) but honestly now, my favorites of this season are definitely rose’s scabbard and future vision, but especially rose’s scabbard. much like pearl, i had someone i considered as a lover pass away unexpectedly, someone who i felt i had a deep and special relationship with, even within our social circle. seeing her lash out in that moment of grief, frustrated that someone who told her everything and understood her like no one else would keep a secret from her, was so gutteral for me to re-experience on rewatch. the idea that someone you were very devoted to is just gone, and you’re still here figuring out how to keep going without them was very personal and touching to me, it’s easily in my top 10 and probably even top 5 for the whole show. future vision is another one that only got better watching it later in life, with a different perspective than when i was 13 watching this show originally. it’s easy to feel out of control in your life, to know that there will always be risks and tribulations that you cannot predict or avoid, and knowing that nothing is certain can feel like you’re always at the edge of the abyss. but, there’s also things we can control, fate isn’t set in stone and you can always make active decisions and changes to navigate life. it’s a very comforting idea in a world where nihilism and existential dread are constantly on the minds of so many
While I think Jailbreak is my favorite episode this season, I have to say Alone Together and Stevonnie are my second favorite episode and favorite fusion. I always love episodes with Connie in them. There are a lot of small hints about Garnet being a fusion throughout this season. They're easy to miss if you don't know, but going back to see them once you do know is a lot of fun.
I remember the first time I watched this finale at 16 yrs old, I was so shocked! But if you re watch previous episodes there are a toooooons of clues about Garnet being a fusion!

Note, Sapphire is the one with future vision. While alone with Steven, Ruby says she can’t see, referencing the future. Additionally Sapphire knew what was going to happen the whole time, as she was singing the melody of the Garnet’s song when Steven found her and knew where to go to find Ruby!

Almost all Gems are female, or at least present as female. The easiest way to explain it is that their humanoid bodies are projected from the gem(s) themselves. SPOILERS FOR S2 ONWARDS BELOW Homeworld’s stance on romantic love in general is not outright stated, but the Diamonds view the Gems below them as little more than workers and servants - peons. Fusion is a representation of a given relationship between multiple Gems. The only Fusions that exist on Homeworld are those of the same Gem type; a relationship based on pragmatism and commonality, mainly used by Gem soldiers. However, cross Gem fusions, such as Garnet, comprised of Ruby and Sapphire, are outlawed and punishable by execution. Especially reviled are _romantic_ cross Gem fusions, since the very concept undermines Homeworld’s caste system.
Favorite character has not been properly introduced, but out of season 1 my favorite episode is probably On the Run. You get lots of lore, and some awesome character development from Amethyst and Pearl.
Also fun fact! Malachite (the name of Lapis and Jasper’s fusion) is toxic in the water so it’s fitting that their toxic fusion is stuck at the bottom of the ocean.

Garnet makes me so happy!! Seeing the moment when Ruby and Sapphire reunite, it makes me cry like a baby. After being in a horrible Malachite relationship for 6 years, I finally found the person that makes me feel like Garnet. Seeing their love like that is so beautiful. 😭
So in every intro everyone has a shooting star when it says the characters name and garnet as 2 shooting stars. And in the episode where steven wants a hard test you can see 2 gems light up for garnet on the door to the temple
Later we see that Garnet hesitated to show Steven that she was a fusion because as a toddler, steven bawled his eyes out when Garnet unfuzed cuz he didn't understand it was still her.
Favorite character is Garnet, she’s just so cool and interesting but Amethyst is a close second. Favorite episode so far is easily Mirror Gem, so much changes as a result of that episode and the introduction of a gem that wasn’t on our side shook everything. Not to mention her reforming & fighting Garnet in that episode was beautiful imo, her theme goes crazy

Favorite Episode: Pretty much anything to do with Rose Quartz and most of season 5 and season 4. I really can't pick a favorite. It's just not possible for me. I will say, however, that if y'all loved season one, then I'm really excited for your journey with the rest of the series. As I'm sure you've been told, season one is the least favorite among fans. I imagine it's just because only maybe 3% of the lore is revealed in the longest season of the show--it's why season one isn't my favorite either. There's only great stuff ahead of you! :)

Favorite character is Garnet, she’s just so cool and interesting but Amethyst is a close second. Favorite episode so far is easily Mirror Gem, so much changes as a result of that episode and the introduction of a gem that wasn’t on our side shook everything. Not to mention her reforming & fighting Garnet in that episode was beautiful imo, her theme goes crazy

Favorite Episode: Pretty much anything to do with Rose Quartz and most of season 5 and season 4. I really can't pick a favorite. It's just not possible for me. I will say, however, that if y'all loved season one, then I'm really excited for your journey with the rest of the series. As I'm sure you've been told, season one is the least favorite among fans. I imagine it's just because only maybe 3% of the lore is revealed in the longest season of the show--it's why season one isn't my favorite either. There's only great stuff ahead of you! :)
