I think the phrase “it depends “ really applies to specific situations. Looking back I wouldn’t of invested in any gold key commanders. I definitely started when the game was brand new in 1254 and invested into Charles, Freddy and Cao Cao. I could of gotten way more use if I could of restarted the commanders and just worked from gold keys.

Note: don't invest in CC, if you want to hunt gatherers then use Belisarius and Baibars, Martel is the best gold key commander and is a decent commander to put in your wall untill season of conquest

If you are going to use a sculpture on a gold key, Martel is one of the best, but the best of the worst is still a garbage investment.

Eh... maxing gold key comms just with keys takes a very very long time. Most people just quit after a year or less. Martel and mehmed I think are good enough for it. Martel/ysg good for garrison. Ysg/mehmed are good for sunset and lost canyon
If you are archer main,your main counter is cavalry so having infantry marches would help you out taking down those cavalry… I think that cheok is very good,paired with Richard or scipione africanus
The problem is, most city skins that are best for archers are bad for infantry. On top of that, archers are actually fine vs cavs as long as a player sets his pairs properly.
The time I started and how game now is, is different before there was a need to max, but since being older player you can give advice so people can do better investing

But you shouldn't use sculps on Martel since he is a gold key commander

It means that you can only use it in kvk 4 and up. Nothing below kvk 4 such as kvk 3 kvk 2 and kvk 1 or just normal KD time

If its just sunset canyon or open-field then 5511 mehmed is already good enough. Its easy to reach that with just gold keys

You can also put some accessories on your infantry like the ones that slow cavalry troop and reduce all type troops defense
