  • In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset”, I take a 6 mile circular walk from Wimborne Minster to Canford Magna & back. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at one of the many Pay & Display car parks in Wimborne Minster and make my way to explore the magnificent Minster Church of St Cuthburga. It is an amazing Minster with so many interesting things to see including a Chain Library & an Astronomical clock!
After passing by the site of the old Queen Elizabeth Grammar school and the Model Town, I head out into the countryside following a footpath Eastwards along the banks of the River Stour to Eye Bridge.
At the bridge, I cross the river and head South through a delightful meadow called Eye Mead and over an old Roman road towards the A31. At this point, I cross the a road & join the Stour Valley Way and head Westwards past Merley Farm.
Crossing the A31 again (this time using an underpass!), I walk through Dawson's Hole - on the Southern bank of the River Stour - and cross over the B3073 to go under the splendid Lady Wimborne Bridge (which used to carry the old railway line over the carriage drive to Canford Manor).
I follow the carriage way to Canford School where I get to see Canford Magna Church before crossing the River Stour again - this time using a suspension bridge.
My final leg takes me back towards Wimborne Minster on the Northern Bank of the river to my final destination - The Coach & Horses pub in Wimborne Minster.

I use a GOPRO HERO 7, 8 or 10 Black Action Camera (sometimes with a Gimbal) & a Rode microphone (either a “Shotgun” or a Rode Wireless Go) together with a Canon Powershot SX530 HS.

When you go over the cable suspension bridge at Canford School, you should have turned right instead of left, and you could have seen the beautiful huge weir and pool area. There's a gorgeous stretch of river to walk for about a mile. You missed out! Right is better than left! Lol.
    Great video !

@DaveFord You'll love it. Surrounded by large trees and adjacent to the school, has multiple weirs going into the large poole. Further up, you walk past the school on the other side of the river and there's some very interesting little beaches that your dog would love! Cheers Dave

We did this lovely walk today with our Springer Spaniel Tess. Tess managed to walk over the suspension bridge without too much difficulty although she was wary at first - her paw dropped through the gaps in the wooden deck a few times but she was ok with it. A local told us that only 50% of dogs manage to get across - some having to be carried and some have to turn back.
A small point to note for future walkers is that he path shown on the ordinance survey map going down to the Stour through allotments is now totally blocked off by building works. You have to carry on down the road to the bridge and there is a new path laid out past the new builds.
Thanks again for a great walk Dave - keep up the good work.

Glad that you had a lovely walk John .... and Tess managed to get over the Suspension bridge (it is wobbly!).

You certainly seem to get the good weather wherever you and Logan go. I’ve never visited Wimborne but my paternal grandparents lived there for a few years after 1955 when my grandfather retired. Eventually they upped sticks and moved to Exmouth in Devon. From your video the old part looks attractive.

Dave, what a lovely video. I thought I knew Wimborne well, but my eyes have been opened to so much more. Excellent stuff. I noticed an intake of breath when you went through the V-stlie, too much Ringwood/Ferret/Abbot's methinks. I think maybe, as you ventured, a separate Wimborne Minster minster video would be appropriate, I'm sure all your subscribers would agree.

    • @DaveFord

Thanks. Yes, there was so much to see in the Minster - it certainly would deserve a video on it's own.
