Hey Paul. I very rarely respond to reviews or posts and stuff like that, but after over 25 years in Internet Marketing - SEO, Copywriting etc., I have come to be very big on, and a firm believer in, presentation. For me, it is close to the "be all and end all" of marketing in general. And this is where you come in Paul. I have watched hundreds, probably thousands, of TH-cam videos and I must admit that your videos Paul are all spot on for presentation, clarity, and relevant content. The way you present your videos is very clear and easy-to-understand. I even detect a little bit of Cockney in your diction. Your explanations and presentations are spot on and second to none. Just wanted to let you know... looking at it from a non-photography point of view.
I want to thank you for your very kind comments (posted 2 years ago). Because I get so many comments and questions, I'm afraid many slip through the net and get missed and that's what happened here. It's impossible for me to reply to all, but I just spotted your lovely words this morning and wanted to say a big thank you. I very much appreciate the feedback and support and I apologise for taking so long to see it and respond. Best wishes to you. Paul @ PhotoGenius.
Your channel is one of the best photography channels I watched. You make it simple and easy to understand. I am going to be your fan following your new tips. Thank you.
Hi, Paul. I always enjoy your videos. For this one, I want in particular to thank you for sharing your failed shots at the bees in flight. Sometimes when I try something and can't seem to get a good shot, I am tempted to get down on myself or think that somehow I am just doing it wrong. I sincerely appreciate the reminder that sometimes things just don't come together as you had hoped, and that the key is just to keep at it until they do.
Thanks Paul. Some very good tips I will need to try. I preferred the colour version of the cactus, and my favorite image was one of the frogs. Keep up the great videos.
hi Paul. I have an entry level camera Canon 1300D. I have learned more in watching 3 videos then I have in the last year having picked up my camera after a long break. This is great. now inspired to get out there again and have a go. Thank you.
Just starting macro photography with some AF extension rings and my Nikon D3500 with the kit lens. I have been using aperture mode but was frustrated at the lack of depth of field and so many parts of my insect subjects being in poor focus. Of course your video explains all this and the need to change the F number to give more depth of field and increasing the ISO to keep the shutter speed adequately high. A great video which makes me want to go out and try again some of the things I was trying and failing to get. Thanks again for your wonderfully clear and logically explained presentation.
Just ordered some extension tubes the other week and after seeing this video Paul I am chomping at the bit to try them out! Thanks for the great tips as usual!
Hello Paul. I am a forensics photography student in a graduate program. I came across your channel a couple of weeks ago. I was so lost in class with my Canon eos which is an older beginners camera. Watching your videos taught me more in an hour than my graduate school did in 4 weeks. I am now becoming more familiar with my camera and beginning to feel more comfortable using it. Thanks Paul. I'm a new subscriber.
As someone who can regularly be seen by his neighbors catching pictures of frogs during the summer, I love your frog shots. They gave me some composition ideas for future frog shots. Wonderful video, as always!
Thanks Paul. I’ve been stuck on Auto for outdoor macro photography for ages. Now I know how to set up my camera properly I’ll hopefully be able to produce more quality images than before. Great tips and easy to follow.
Thanks Sean, so happy to read that you've been inspired to get out of Auto! Hope you have fun and get some cool shots. Best wishes Sean and thanks for supporting my channel.
Another great video. I am an amateur photographer, I took it up in my retirement and you were one of the first TH-cam mentors that I started to follow. Your videos are always well thought out and your presentation is always unpretentious, clean and to the point. Thanks Paul. Will be looking forward to your next video. God bless!
Thank you for making this video! I was one of the many who requested it after watching your other macro video. I’m sure I’ll watch it multiple times with my camera in hand to try and figure out what I’m doing. Love the frog pictures!
Extension tubes are great fun. Just know you are going to take a lot more bad photos than good but when you hit focus just right the result can be amazing. Lovely video.
Thank you for these videos on Macro photography. It's nice to know that I don't need to blow my budget on a lens. Really love the frogs. That said, the patience it must have taken to get the fly and the dragon fly take those photos to the next level for me. Off to practice my macro photography.
What I got from this: shoot at SS 200 or higher; stop down as much as possible to increase DOF; with this in mind, to improve exposure, increase ISO by a bit; use manual focus, and even move the camera to-and-fro to nail focus. One can use a speed-light with diffuser as well to avoid blur and provide enough light for the subject. Thanks Paul
Spot on with using a speed light / flash - the only reason I chose not to use in one in this video is because a lot of viewers will not have one - however a macro / speedlight video might have to be something to consider for the future.
@@photogenius Yes, absolutely consider doing a video on speed lights / flashes. I've been using my built-in flash for snowflake photography with very bad results; pinpoints of light showing up all over my captures. I've never owned a speed light, though I know many people use them. Nevertheless, I managed to find a DIY project and made a diffuser which I just popped over my built-in flash and tried that a few days ago while shooting snowflakes. The difference was incredible! The working of the built-in flash was not compromised in any way and that DIY light diffuser saved the day.
Great fun watching and learning from you on this shoot, thank you for the great tips. I stay in Manual so much that I've lost the knowledge of when to change to another mode, so it was useful to hear from you on why to shift into Aperture for this shoot. My fave: You on a knee taking the pond shot. Oh, fave macro? The frog on the orange reed: Green/Orange composition and close-up image are spectacular!
Good video Paul. Even though I consider myself a good photographer, the way you explain the technical details is probably better than anyone else I've seen, and this is especially good for beginners. Keep up the good work!
Another great video Paul. I had to re-check your other video to see if you mentioned the flower on the lens. This is the the closest you could be to an object and the lens still be able to focus. This is useful for those that don't have the expansion rings.
The flower you mention is the symbol (sometimes the word macro) that you refer to indicates the closest you can get the lens and still focus. However with the extension tubes you can get significantly closer.
I thank you so much for all that you do, Paul. You really break down and explain Photography excellently! My favorite photos were 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. The detail in the #5 fly shot where you can actually see the hair folicle of the fly. Now that outstanding. KUDOS!!!
Loved this Paul your images were stunning I loved the frogs ❤ as for B&W verses colour the colour you could guess what the was with mono you couldn't and I liked that , I'm going to invest on these stackers very cost effective for me for my d5600 Nikon great to see you outdoors thanks Paul 👍
3:42 I prefer color on this one. I'm not a frog person; but I did like the tiny frogs. I also love the purple and yellow flower. I think my favorite was the tiny fly, though. The colors on that guy were beautiful.
Has taken me 2 years to get macro right and still have got things to learn I thought I had dof right but you have explained dof so well and simply keep up the good work
Another great video Paul, thanks for sharing. I’m new to photography and really tempted to give macro a try. I really liked the frog photos, as well as the purple flower on the screen at the end.
Great shots, Paul!!! You got amazing shots of the fly and the frog and the dragonfly; all super hard to get. Both of these videos about macro are super helpful. Your videos are really excellent!
I could have done with this video last week. I learnt all these lessons the hard way. Will be heading back out with my lessons confirmed to see if I can improve.
Great follow-up video Paul, really enjoying your macro photography series. I purchased the Kenko extension tubes after the first video and have been having fun shooting anything around the house. This video shows me moving subjects can be photographed using the tubes with patience and the appropriate settings especially concerning DOF. I would say the fly is my favorite but I will mention the lilac flower in the lily pond is awesome as well. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and guidance for beginners like myself.👍👍
Thank you Paul for this very informative video. I have a macro lens and have struggled to get satisfactory images but with the help of this video I feel inspired to get out and practice more. I really liked the image you converted to black and white and the small green frogs. thank you again. Regards Richard.
Your little frog photo was absolutely smashing! Bees in flight are very difficult to capture, you have to plan in advance for where you think they are heading next.....I have spent a lot of time attempting that same feat haha!

Excellent tutorial as usual. I hope to get a set of extension tubes in the near future and try my hand at macro photography. The photos you ended up with were all well done, but my favorite was the frog on the bent branch (third one, I believe). I look forward more!
Thanks Paul . As usual your videos are very clear and helpful as I am just starting out with extension tubes. Even using manual focus I find I still have to move backward/forwards gently and not all come out as sharp as I would like. Off to practice some more.

hi paul what is your opinion of using auto iso for macro photo
If auto ISO suits you, the subject and your style of photography then go for it! 👍🏻
