Touga isn't really a favourite character of mine, but two of my favourite characters are Nanami and Saionji so he's like... an in-law? I think about him a lot lol, there is SO much to unpack

i adore dais' amv with this song and i especially love the finale with the cross-cutting between nanami and the swords of humanity's hatred matched with the barking of the dogs, so i was really intrigued to see what direction this one would take the song in, and Oh my go.d. AMaizng?!??!! the inclusion of the monologue was just masterful, the way the clips shown recontextualize the spoken text, and the build-up of tension during it even knowing how it would end is just AHG my god so well done. you are a bright new auteur in the brilliant hyperniche subsubsubculture of utena amvs.

what are your thoughts on touga's parallels to ruka, if you have any? (Visually, in the story, the fact that juri and him duel by a riverside-) i feel this is something u may have opinions on

I'm not the best with putting my opinions into words, part of the fun of making AMVs for me is as a form of analysis if that makes any sense lol, still I'll try
I think they both show how a prince is supposed to be self sacrificing, Ruka left the hospital early knowing it would kill him to free Juri and Touga fought Utena to save her from Akio, and that self sacrificing attitude is what gets them killed (it's kinda perfect that Touga drowned trying to save Juri, the both of them died trying to save the same person)
They both had good intentions but their execution wasn't great, Utena’s trust in Touga was completely broken after having to duel him a third time and I don't think I have to explain why Ruka forcefully kissing Juri to get to her locket was bad
In that sense they both embody “the boy who drowned” pretty well, they jumped at the opportunity to save the girl but they had no idea how
I’d honestly love to go more in depth but my opinions on Ruka aren’t fully formed yet, I WANT TO HEAR YOUR OPINIONS THO, RUKA AND JURI DUELING BY A RIVERSIDE ACTUALLY DESTROYED ME IF YOU’RE IMPLYING WHAT I THINK YOU ARE
As a side note I noticed just now that Ruka’s aiguillette (the string they all wear) is red rather than blue, the student council all wear one that corresponds with their hair colour and yet Ruka wears one that's Touga’s colour, it's fitting that on a first watch through it felt like Ruka was going to replace Touga while he was gone sulking with how similar their personalities are
@@umbreells I TOTALLY understand how you feel about using AMVs as analysis!!! It was actually while making an amv i realized that the shot of touga summoning the car to nanami the car runs him over.
Now I could be insane (my roommate thinks so-) but I think Ruka and Touga may be the same person OR perhaps ruka and touga were merged for the movie. (Nanami was also cut, though her cow form is used for a POINT being made in the cut away that I won't get into here, but she, kozue, and miki certainly had their roles reduced for time, lending my conspiracy brain some room) This has the possible pitfall of just taking utena too literally- that there must be a "true" story instead of accepting it as being very allegorical- but I feel as with most things in utena that the truth lies somewhere in the middle.
Ruka may be Touga's ideal- the Dios to his Akio, but warped by being in truth what Touga wanted to be (a man who attained power and proved his status as a man by doing whatever he needs to do while also saving those who cannot save themselves)
But that's just a theory...

Also if you have read any of Jay Scott's utena analysis, He posits that Ruka's statement about the sword shiori polished not being HIS sword means that akio TOOK ruka's sword the same way he intended to take utena's (and most likely broke it, which is why ruka's in the hospital) I think this is neat, and is very interesting when paired with the knowledge that touga has two swords pulled out of him in the series (by keiko and saionji respectively) and while the sword keiko pulls is a katana, it doesn't resemble touga's dueling sword past that while saionji pulls one we never see before or again that is just kind of a generic European sword that again doesn't resemble his dueling sword.
@@wellofhavoc OH MY GOD THE POINT ABOUT RUKA’S SWORD??? That actually fits in with something else I read that Ruka “dying” was a similar situation to Utena where death meant he escaped into the real world
I can definitely see where you’re coming from with Ruka and Touga being merged for the movie, makes sense why Shiori would be engaged to Touga as well, I felt like it was her way of recreating her relationship with Ruka
Imma need to rewatch Ruka’s eps, I don’t think he and Touga are the same person but they’re definitely connected
