    Nirvana has always sounded like home to me ...

  • @jmentone
    @jmentone ปีที่แล้ว +91

    Interesting facts about this recording;
    - Cobain’s acoustic/electric guitar, a 1959 Martin D-18E, is the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction for 6 million dollars. 2nd most is his Fender Mustang.
    - Pat Smear, who joined Nirvana as a rhythm guitarist in 93, is playing guitar as well. He was in great bands like the Germs & 45 Grave and is currently playing for the Foo Fighters.
    - The first release after Cobain’s death in November 94, initially to combat the multiplying bootleg copies. It broke numerous records & has since went MULTIPLATINUM.
    - Producers argued that Cobain’s guitar shouldn’t have effect pedals, which he wanted to use. This lead to Cobain hiding his pedals until he was live on air, when obviously he couldn’t be interfered. You can hear it beautifully on The Man Who Sold the World.
    - Encore request we’re rampant from everyone outside the band, however they themselves behind curtains claimed that there was no way they could top the last song performed.

    • @andyr2503
      @andyr2503 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have NO DOUBT that there were probably a $&@*load of encore requests, but what's always bugged me is that every time I saw any video of the show, everyone was just so calmy sitting in their seats, like they were at a grade school talent show! I'm not saying there should have been a mosh pit or anything, but it seems like there should have/could have been a helluva lot more standing ovations! But...I'm probably (definitely) just jealous. Plus, before the show, they were all probably asked to stay seated since it was an album recording (the only "Unplugged" show done in one take!). So, nevermind (ha ha), just b****ing that I wasn't, trying to be, calmly sitting there myself.

    This album changed my life.
    I was 11.
    Had never heard anything like it.
    So powerful.
    To this day it's still my safe space and my safe zone.
    When I need to reset from life or whatever; I just play this and everything else fades and goes away and makes for a fresher more exciting start to everything.
    I've also used it throughout my life to decorate special capsules of time like dinners, dates and special encounters with women, party music, meditation sessions and most importantly: solitary and safe moon nights.
    Most recently, when my grandfather died a year ago, I was with him the moment he passed.
    He had confided in me a year previous to that during a Christmas gathering, that he knew he was going to die soon.
    And sure enough, it happened right before my eyes, 11 or so months later.
    The doctors told us that there was nothing left for us to do but wait for it to happen.
    Had never actually seen a person die before.
    But it was only at that moment when I realized that.
    After it was all over and done, I came back to this album.
    I layed awake at night in the dark with my headphones on.
    Replaying "On a Plain" and "Dumb" over and over.
    It sure gave me some peace.
    There was some sadness that I felt, but more than anything: it was a sense of finality and relief.
    It still gets me going after all these years.
    I've done a lot of stuff to this album.
    But I just have never lost touch with it.
    There was a time (many years ago) when I stopped listening to Nirvana.
    But I just could never completely sever ties with this record.
    I ultimately just came back with my tail between my legs and just embraced Nirvana as hard as I could from that moment on.
    To the point where they've almost given me part of my identity.
    I'm sure I'll be listening to "Unplugged" when I'm 90 on vinyl and still dig the hell out of it.

      Same story here, though less elegantly. The very first CD I got from my dad as an eleven-year-old was In Utero. Fucking loved it. At 38, through numerous phases of life, changing beliefs and values, changing friends, Bleach, In Utero, and Unplugged stay in the rotation. Like you said, I "never lost touch" with them.

It's almost a spiritual reset . It was and will always be the most important album for the inner me. Sincerely. Wow weird.. 90- for sure and yes I will have the damn vinyl by then. ♥️🙏♥️🙏

      he made some really beautiful music, obviously he is just one part of the band, but it is what it is, in the multiverse there is a place where Kurt is still alive because history in that part of the cosmos, there was a different set of events, but I believe that we all chose our path before we came into this world, & as regrettable as life does get sometimes, I believe that fourth dimensionally these events are all synchronised, I couldn't begin to even explain how, but I do believe that if we each can trust our very own being & have faith in ourselves, we may come to understand that we would have signed up to the agreement for this experience of our lives here upon earth, & taken the pathway that was the only one, "that would have resulted in the experiences that we came here into this world to have", not all lives are equal or even happy, but just like an Ice burg under the water we may not be able to see the whole bigger picture, or as a Star trek analogy, each of us came here with a "prime directive" which for each one of us as the meaning of life, as subjective as the soul experiencing it, I sometimes think, until we have fulfilled our "assignments" our consciousness mentality, is learning new skills & experiences, but no matter who we are, music just like a nice aroma scent can relax us & even help us meditate or take us back to a good memory Nirvana is just like a latter day band as influential as the Beatles, both bands stand out in a crowd, & created countless memories.

    My favorite Nirvana album. Arguably their deepest, or perhaps most intimate, performance. Stripped down of all the electric sounds and rock star image. Every song is good. Plus the Meat puppets, and.. Leadbelly cover. A folk ending to a classic recording. Their heaviest album imo..

    I've listened to this album so many times to fall asleep. At first I always fell asleep almost always on About a Girl. (Until the day I changed my cd player with the random option). Even today what fascinates me is how a song played aggressively as I knew them could become totally softer, to the point of falling asleep as if I were cradle by the wind.

    if you listen to this album and are not moved by Nirvana, Kurt, the Meat Puppets all on stage thirty years ago in the heart of the Seattle / Olympia then you either were not born yet or you are so completely absorbed in some other aspect of life, of which there are many, you missed something sacred. and yet that still does not explain how one could not be touched by this glass sliver of reality.

    It’s been nearly 30 years since I’ve heard this album in its entirety- I mean of course I loved nirvana back then as a 13 year old because we all did, though I was never a die hard fan- and now I understand why - I wasn’t mature enough in terms of the musical wisdom my young soul had yet to acquire (if that even makes sense)…revisiting this performance as a grown adult is such a deeply moving experience…would it be going over board to even describe it as not unlike a spiritual awakening? …the genius of songwriting, the flawless vocal technique, the unpretentious chord progressions brilliantly mismatched with the bold unpredictable vocal melodies - but in such an authentic way - uncontrived - a totally original signature sound but uncontrived - not simply playing something odd for the sake sounding odd… an unmatched masterpiece that I will use as the soundtrack to my life over many months to come… what a gift to rediscover something old and hear it with a whole new appreciation and understanding of the artistry of the genius that was our beloved Kurt Cobain

But I am so grateful to have this play while I shower the blues away. So grateful 🙏 🥲 I love you Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, and just the whole set of awesome performers for this set. ❤️ ♥️ 💖 💕....hoping everyone has a good day if you read this far. 😊

    Give yourself a thumbs up if you're still listening to this in May of '23. For no reason other than that is great. Some would say it is the best unplugged ever. I do. (I know some say Alice in Chains, but i think people say that to be edgy. Deep down they know this is the G.O.A.T. performance.)
    See you the next time you wanna listen!

    One of the greatest live acoustic performances ever recorded. Nirvana came along in the late 80's and changed the face of rock n roll in the 90's and this captured what made the band so great.

    • @andyr2503

      YES!!! Anyone that argues that this wasn't @ LEAST the best Mtv Unplugged is outta their minds! Paul McCartney & Eric Clapton might have been considered (and in all honesty, kinda are in their own ways) legends for years before this, but their shows don't have $&!^ on this one. Not even to remind fans this, but, Nirvana was also the only "Unplugged" show that did it all in one take! Whether Kurt wanted to "Guarantee he would screw this (David Bowie) song up" or not, he didn't. Flawless!!! DEFINITELY one of the greatest acoustic shows! Especially considering this wasn't even really their "genre" or "style"!!! To take the grunge they created and pretty much make another "mellow grunge" style, was proof that they are one of the best, though barely acknowledged anymore now, or probably in history! I can't say they were Mozart-like composers, but to finish my long-ass rant, long compositions like that aren't always what people want or need. THIS is what people need to be hearing, not loud-ass talentless bass! But I guess times always change, and we can only hope that Nirvana, Kurt, and this show, are remembered and somehow remind folks, "Remember that? That was some pretty great $&!^" !!!
