When John was a boy he lived with his aunt Mimi. Strawberry Field was a walled orphanage in the area. John would climb the wall and explore the grounds and play with the kids. His aunt told him he was going to get caught if he kept doing it. His response was, "They can't hang you for it." Hence the line, "nothing to get hung about".

Except he really wasn't that good neither, specially at the beginning when he was often replaced on studio recordings by pro session drummers, like on "Love Me Do" or "Hard Days Night" .
Ringo was OK, very good at times, but the sound of Abbey Road studios, the hours spend on each parts, the mix and arrangement that is what makes his drum sounds so great.
Take the white Album for exemple, on "Dear Prudence" and "Back In The USSR" it's Paul Mc Cartney playing drums, and it sounds quite similar.

"Back In The USSR" and "Dear Prudence" do feature Paul on drums, but they don't sound like Ringo. You can't really say they were equally good or ingerchangeable.

Interesting history to this song. John Lennon, the writer and lead singer, had two takes which he liked a lot and couldn't decide which one to use. Not being able to decide which one to use, he instructed George Martin, the producer, to use BOTH. The problem was that they were in different keys AND tempos! George Martin was a genius producer and he was able to splice them in a way so that he got both versions on the final recording (the takes in the faster tempo kick in around the 2:00 and 2:47 marks). The Beatles also use diminished chords that are common with jazz music on this song. Then there are changes to the time signatures such as 4/4, 6/8, 3/4, 2/4. It makes Ringo's drumming even more miraculous.

The drummer was Ringo Starr. His style has amazed and puzzled drummers ever since the days of the Beatles because his way of playing was so unusual and distinctive - and yes, this is one of the highlights of his time with The Beatles. The fourth member of the Beatles was lead guitarist George Harrison. And yes, The Beatles did have some bad songs... but they only make up about 2 or 3% of their output.

Ringo on drums is a lefty on a right handed kit so he tends to play outside in rather than inside out when doing fills, its like writing right to left in a book because it felt natural. Also he had stupid natural timing, didnt need a click track to play along with, never got faster, never got slower once he started a song, and when recording , take 1 tempo would be exactly take 50 tempo unless someone said speed up.

Proper deep pocket drummer. Sure, there are better drummers, lots of them. But look at his kit, floor tom, tom snare bass, high hat, and a splash or two of cymbals. A Basic set you could get from Argos. Compare that to JB from Zep of Baker, they had a huge kit. Ringo, didn't like flashy, only once played a solo under orders. But he never played the same groove twice, always hit the spot, and was a monster metronome. He let the Beatles soar, and always played the best for the band. He and Harrison are who you want in a band, not the most perfect technically, but do what is right to make the song as good as it could be.

His left hand on a right hand kit gave him a signature only those who cared about drumming have. But that didn't matter, he was solid, and added to a song, not showboating. To understand the excellence, majesty and exceptionality of BEATLES and the transcendence of their musical work and influence on the culture, I leave two data that were milestones:
    November/December 1963 on UK Charts
his two singles #1 and #2
"I want to hold your hand"
    "She She loves you"
at the same time as their first two albums #1 and #2
    "With the Beatles"
    "Please, please me"
(the latter spent 30 weeks at #1)
    April 4, 1964 on Billboard U.S.
just two months after BEATLES 'first visit to the U.S.A. and their presentation on Ed Sullivan show, the entire Top 5 was from BEATLES:
    "Can’t Buy Me Love"
    "Twist and Shout"
    "Ella She Loves You"
"I Want to Hold Your Hand"
    "Please Please Me"
and after separating, their four members had successful careers as soloists or with their new groups.
There will be a lot of very good groups and bands, and I like a lot,

    THE BEATLES

There's so much more Beatle music that you probably haven't listened to yet particularly the earlier stuff which is also amazing. You get to hear their evolution. With that, I have to mention another band that will blow your mind and that is Led Zeppelin. You will be trapped listening to music genius between these two bands. It's literally two tracks edited together. The first minute or so is the original Take 7 of the tune (they were messing about with slowing the tape down) and the latter is apparently Take 26 or something - which was taken at a much faster pace. They speeded up the first bit and slowed down the second, with the result that (unlike today, when you could actually change tempo without effecting the pitch) the song is not precisely in a 'key'. That's why it has that 'woozy' sound to it.

    Ringo Starr - drums, percussion
John Lennon - bongos (and other things)
    Paul McCartney - timpani, bongos
    (and other things)
    George Harrison - timpani, maracas
    (and other things)
Who was on drums? ALL of them! Ringo was "the drummer" but none of them were welded to one instrument.
By this stage, they were not doing live performances. They were working in the studio, cranking out some A-MAZING stuff. In fact, it has been said that they treated the studio as another instrument. George Martin, their producer, was happy to take their wildest ideas and turn them into music. A lot of recording techniques came out of Martin's creativity. Now you can get those sounds with a box you put somewhere in the line from the sound source and the recorder or speakers. In fact, you can get them with a click of the mouse. But the idea for them came out of some of the most creative brains ever to walk into a recording studio.
And it was all good, and it is still being played and covered 50 years later, and it will still be played and covered in another 50 years.

An American journalist once asked John Lennon, "What's it like to have Ringo the greatest drummer in the world in the group?"; Lennon replied, "Ringo, the greatest drummer in the world?! - he's not even the greatest drummer in the group!" 😆😆 A classic Lennon reply.

And famously... now listen to this again, you hear very faintly "I buried Paul." That line stirred up a lot of controversy in it's day. The Beatles were always playing with your mind. Yes you are so right. The song is just subjective. Whatever images it creates in your mind and soul. It's pure art. A Masterpiece. I love watching your pure reactions of joy. With their incomparable fan base and legendary reputation second to none, I won’t feel that I am throwing any shade to tell you that you have to, have to, HAVE TO do a show on the Norwegian music sensation Nico And Vinz!!! You’ve already done “Aha”, which is a generation before these guys, but seriously, you are missing out on a musical act that there simply is nothing like in the world today!!!! Go ahead, kick open that door!!! Start with “Am I Wrong”, then follow up with “In Your Arms”. I guarantee if you do that, it will open your eyes WIDE!!! Plus lots, lots LOTS more great songs by these guys!!! Once again, I’ll be looking for you to do these guys! You are my first and favorite reaction guy. If I ever see you doing a reaction video, I think I will lose my mind!!!!

  • @RastaSaiyaman
    @RastaSaiyaman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Here's the story behind this song.
In 1966 after having met Bob Dylan who told the guys that he dug their melodies but dared them to write songs which were making a statement rather than "Boy-loves-girl" John Lennon decided to write about the subject matter that he knew best: Himself.
And if you look at the situation he found himself in, you'll see he had plenty of inspiration. He was the biggest super star of his day, played to crowds of thousands each day and earning himself a decent living doing so.
    BUT
    - Those crowds were screaming so loud that the band couldn't hear themselves on stage and big concert PA Systems weren't invented yet. (They came to be when Pete Townshend from the Who walked into Jim Marshall's London shop which made custom amplifiers and requested an amplifier which would "Shut the audience up!")
    - The touring schedule was so grueling that the guys couldn't get any rest and when they were at home, they were strangers in their own homes. After having played Candlestick park, the guys decided enough was enough, they would stop touring as those tours were killing them.
    - Lennon's marriage was falling apart, he barely knew his own son.
    - During the making of this music video, Lennon confided to a friend how unhappy he was with all the bullshit which started to surround the band and everything they did.
So what is "Strawberry fields forever" about?
    - Well it was a garden, a park if you will which was part of the grounds of an orphanage, where as a child Lennon would go and zone out, forget about life. So that line with which he starts the song "Let me take you down, 'cause I'm going to Strawberry fields" as an invitation to all just zone out in that place he went to if he wanted some serenity.
    - The first verse "Living is easy with eyes closed" there was NOBODY, other than the other Beatles, who knew what the situation was like, not least of all the fans.
    - The second verse, "No one I think is in my tree" is again him telling the people "You have no idea!"
    - The third verse "Always known sometimes I think it's me" is the sobering conclusion, he himself is to blame for that situation too, as he allowed it to happen.

Strawberry Field is a Salvation Army property that was an orphanage for many, many years. When John Lennon was a young boy growing up in and around the Mersyside area of west England he would play on the grounds. It is still there, still owned by "The Sallies" and whilst the children's home has been closed there is still a park and memorial on the premises.
As you now know that the drummer is Ringo Starr (nee Richard Starkey) you should do one of the songs he wrote and sings lead vocals on such as "Octopus's Garden" or "Don't Pass Me By". Starr takes lead on "Matchbox"' "Act Naturally"; "Honey Don't" and the classic "Yellow Submarine". Ringo Starr sang a few other Beatles songs but these are the ones I happen to think are the best examples of him taking the lead vocal part.

All of the four members of the Beatles had solo careers after the group broke up in 1969. They were all successful on the singles chart in the early 70's. Each one of them had at least one #1 hit and all four were in the top 40 in the same week in the early 70's as well. The Beatles left us a huge legacy. They had 20 #1 hits between 1964 and 1970 in the USA with an additional #1 hit in 1997 with the song Free As A Bird. They also had 13 additional top 10 hits in the 60's as well as another top 10 hit in 1976 called Got To Get You In To My Life which was covered by Earth, Wind & Fire a couple of years later who also hit the top 10 with their version and went #1 on the soul chart.

Great react! You said right off the very thing I've always thought about John Lennon's enigmatic, trippy Strawberry Fields Forever -- from the very first time I heard it as a boy, circa 1967. John's words and music are fascinating and the orchestration of all instruments is compelling. But the great Ringo Starr's drumming is superb.
Once each principal Beatle gave him the basic idea for their song, he always knew exactly what kind of percussion to play -- and George Martin always knew how to produce it.
With Strawberry Fields, the coolest thing to me is that Ringo seems to gradually bring his drumming along so that by the ending it morphs into a sort of march tempo.
