    It's quite interesting... for primary school children it is a shock to write in the squared paper. But from the middle school it is normal to use squared notebooks for writing... even among the same nationality it surprises children. Recently, I've asked my 3rd-grade student to have a squared paper notebook for English, because (in my opinion) it is easier to separate the page for translation, or in case of drawing (to include the associative memory). And she was shocked like "why not lined notebook? How is it possible to write in a squared notebook?". So I said, if it is more comfortable for you - write in lined notebook.
