    As a EMT BASIC. I used an EMT practice test app on my phone to prepare for the NREMT. I devoted myself to do 30 questions every morning when I woke up and 30 questions s at night before I went to bed for 2 weeks. Thats 840 total practice questions, I passed my national first try in or around 70 or so questions. 😉

      I passed my NREMT first try as well. I also used an EMT test app, I did roughly 60 practice exams ranging from 10 to 100 questions per day for 2 weeks to prep for the NREMT test.

      @@ZeonikTV wow! 100 questions on some days, that's is a lot! good for you seriously. I'm a dumb dumb so I shot for consistency no matter the day. 30 questions (twice a day) day in and day out. went from an average score of 50-60% on the practice tests and ended with a 88%- 95% in any subject by the end of the 2 weeks. Caffeine and adrenaline prior to NREMT also helped me out a lot!

    The two best pieces of advice I ever received from a Paramedic were: Keep your hands out of your pockets, and jump in. You can't learn anything if you stand idly by and reflect on a emergency scene.

      Jordan Manuelito Not even close. The job/career should have ZERO bearing on being a hard worker and checking your ego. No matter what you are doing, you should be the hardest worker out there with your mind opened the most. That way you’re most apt to outlearn everyone else along with out working everyone else. I’ve been in fire/EMS for over 20 years, so there’s nothing you’re gonna say that will convince me that this field is too difficult to be the hardest worker in. I’ve always said people with your mentality will weed themselves out either in academy or very early on their career.

    My tips for Paramedic School.
    1. You better make sure you have plenty of time to study outside the class before you jump into paramedic school, you have to make it a priority, you might have to give up other activities you normally do. Paramedic school is information intensive. It was tougher than having a full load of classes in college.
    2. Have good study skills and note-taking skills. You will be using your own notes as study guides. You can find youtube videos on both.
    3. Do not miss a class. As I said the course is information-intensive and they move from one subject to the next at a good pace and you do not want to get behind and miss something. You better be ready to commit and give 100%.
    4. Do not be afraid to mark up your expensive textbooks, highlight and make notes in the book itself as needed, they are a tool, use em.
    5. When you read a chapter/s before class, write down anything you do not understand so you can ask questions in class.
    6. The course is what you make of it. You might have a great instructor or a bad one but all the materials are available to you, you will get out what you put in.
    7. Do extra. Does the course allow you to stay after class is over and put in time practicing on the dummies? Do it. Put in as many days doing ride alongs and ER time as you can, ask if you can do more days etc.
    8. Be aware, EMT and Paramedic training may turn you into a hypochondriac.
    EMT class was a piece of cake, Paramedic school is intense. Just the amount of information you are expected to memorize.
    Though EMT may have been easy for me because it was hard to get into, took 2 years to get an opening in my area and by the time I got in I had already taken Medical Terminology, and an intense Human Anatomy course so the medical terms and Anatomy in the EMT course came very easy. If you are not in a hurry, I would suggest taking a medical terminology and Human Anatomy class at your local community college. It will help you more than you can imagine.

    The best tip I give to emt basics is understand the processes of the skills, illnesses, and injuries. During clinicals you should be in the middle of everything, meaning don’t wait for your preceptor to tell you to do something if it is within your certification level. Preceptors love when they don’t have to tell you to get vitals, help the patient on the stretcher, attach leads, etc. This gives them the chance to focus on other things instead of hovering over you like a hawk because they don’t trust you. Also on NR, most of the time all the answers are right but the answer that comes first in the process is usually the right one. My last tip is be confident, learn the material and drill it until it’s second nature.

    The biggest thing I saw in my EMT class was that people were studying to pass course exams, they weren't studying to better understand the content. Remember that your EMT course is essentially just a test prep class for the NREMT exam. It's no value to you to memorize all the test questions in the class and get a 100% in the class, if you don't understand the concepts behind the questions. Several of my classmates were obsessed with having a perfect score, but then failed the NREMT because of that.
    When it comes to skills, be deliberate and confident. Understand the reason you're doing what you are, don't simply memorize steps. Missing a step can throw you off, but if you have an intuitive understanding of the process, it's easy to overcome a misstep and correct course.
    I went into my weakest skills exams with a confident mentality and I made deliberate decisions that I knew I could justify. Keep the patient in mind. I was told by a proctor after having tested nearly 100 different students, that I was the only person to introduce myself to my pt and that the pt felt that I provided the best care despite me feeling that I stumbled at times. Focus on providing quality patient care, be confident, and be deliberate.

    I'm almost done with EMT school and I started from zero medical knowledge outside a biology class back in college. These are really good tips. Because of my job, I had a hard time reading through all of the chapters, specially the long ones. Instead, I glossed over them trying to get the general idea of what the chapter talks about and then add it to our lecture and ask the questions that come from it. Watch different videos on a specific skill and make-up videos that students do. That will give you an idea on how you're supposed to perform instead of an instructor showing you the "perfect" way to do it. Also, always ask question! I went from being one of the oldest guys in the class (everyone else is around 20ish) to being recognized by instructors for asking questions and they even follow my progress and know I'm ready for my skills sign off or something. I try to mimic that on my ride-alongs and it does wonders for me. And yes, be proactive and show determination to do stuff as opposed to the person who is good with the book but sits in the back when it comes to doing skills. Even my classmates approach me with questions or join my group to see how I'm doing it.
    3 weeks left for me. Good luck and stay safe brothers and sisters!

    Two biggest things for myself as an EMT-B was 1) During clinicals, ask questions and ask to do the little things. This shows that you want experience and you'll end up getting to try alot of things. 2) During class, about 3 months before taking National Registery I started test prep through the EMT-Prep app. Repetition will sharpen your mind for the big test.

    Small tip: 1.) if I had to learn something difficult which I just couldn't process that easily... I did some drawing. A list of hard to remember symptoms were easier to remember after I made a caricature or funny drawing of it. Other parts of brain gets activated making it easier to remember. 2.) Drink one more coffee. Caffeine helps and a bit of motion to get it refreshes your brain. That's the two which helped me a lot during med/dental school. Thanks for reading 😉

I would even write down questions I didn’t know after quizes and then study that info and add the knowledge to my notes so I had it for the future. Not only did that help me get through testing but I referenced those notes through out my internship and for NREMT testing. Personally, I'm also a huge proponent of keeping an ongoing list of things to review that I come across during the day. It's a good way to stay engaged and use any spare time you might happen to come across. During school, I started to handwrite everything I possibly could; from lecture notes to copying down info from my textbook (instead of highlighting). Whenever time permitted, I would review my handwritten notes and type them up so I could easily look up something. I find the physical act of writing engages me more keeping me focused, and helping info to better sink-in. Another tactic I found helped retain knowledge was to break study topics into small

      That awesome Kay. Sam gave some great tips. I'd recommend you finding a facebook group or someone that has taken the exact course you are going to take and get their 2 cents from their personal experience about the course (i.e. what the learning atmosphere is like, what to expect from the course and instructors, study tips, etc). This can totally help decrease the overwhelming feeling that may occur early on in school.
      Don't let this freak you out at all lol. EMT school is totally doable =) I recommend trying to speak with people from previous classes because every EMT course (although the same in the national requirements area) differ from one another in several ways (i.e. how the program is ran).

    **TIP: As a person currently in paramedic school, my tip is, DON’T underestimate how difficult it is! We are being trained on how to keep people alive in their most vulnerable moments, don’t underestimate that. It’s A LOT of material and A LOT work that you have to put in to be successful.
    Be safe out there! ;)

  • @TacMed0059
    @TacMed0059 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'll say right now good tips on how to get through the program. You definitely need/ require all these attributes in order to be successful through these programs.
    This is the part were I change the tempo. Ive been in EMS for 10 years with over 5 1/2 as a paramedic. I live in California. Unless you plan on going the FD route or move out of state and join a great EMS system like in texas, Washington or wherever in all honesty don't do it. The abuse of the EMS system out here is ridiculous. I've had my far share of great calls were I but my medic skills to use. But in turn I've ran a lot more calls that did not require EMS and could have gone to the hospital by private vehicle. And the general consensus with a lot of my fellow coworkers was the same. Even in other counties it was the same. Also what they pay out here for paramedics or EMT's and the cost of living is not substantial in any means. I would have to work multiple hours of OT in order to live comfortably and even then the time I would miss with family and friends was definitely not worth it. On top of that the emotional stress, physical stress, mental stress and lack of sleep that I would have to deal with on a daily basis was also definitely not worth it.
    If you want to be a firefighter do it. Swat medic do it. Moving out of state state into an EMS system where cost of living is cheaper do it. For those of you considering going to EMT/ Paramedic school to get experience for nursing school, just go to nursing school. Depending on what you're doing as a nurse almost none of what you learned as a paramedic /EMT would relate unless you're an ER nurse and even then you'll have the proper training from nursing school to know what you're doing as you took the tips from this video and apply it to that.
    I know this is not universal for everyone and I know it might sound toxic but I'm a realist and people should really know what they're getting themselves into for they jump in. Which I wish i would've learned a long time ago. What I would advise is if you see an EMS crew on they're down time go and talk to them and really ask them about the job, what it entitles, the pay, how the provider they work for treats them and whatever else you're interested in. And really ask them to be honest and don't hold back. Hopefully they give you a real answer.
    I really like your video's man. They're very informative but I honestly think people should know the other side of it. It takes a lot for someone to do this job and I'm at my end with it. As of next year I'm done and hopefully will never have to go back.

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rachelbrame9584 30? You are still young. I don't know of any fire departments that wont hire anyone in their 30's personally. I'm interested to know what fire departments do that. I went through the fire academy with guys and girls well in their 30's. Ive seen several firefighters hired in their 40's as well. My mentor was 40 when he got hired. I've also had the pleasure of hiring firefighters well in their 30's as well.
      30 is a great age. Amongst several other great qualities, as a 30 year old, you have the luxury of having life experience under your belt. That is highly desirable in the fire service.
      The shift in the retirement system has changed the culture a little. With a 25 year minimum, the younger generation (like yourself) are highly sought after. But that doesn't mean that older people cant be hired. If they fit the mold of the department, crush the firefighter recruitment process and fire academy, and pass their probationary period, they are no different than any other firefighter. They'll just be a little older when they retire compared to that of a younger firefighter.
      Don't let age hold you back. Who knows, you could be a great asset to the fire service. If you have a passion to become a firefighter and want to make difference in that field then do it. It is a great career.

    I know with me personally, some of his suggestions worked for me before I even seen this video. I always sat at the front of the classroom so I could avoid the distraction of talking to others and just focusing on the teacher. Upon discussions, me and a few other students would all try to compete against the teacher to show who was more right and who could back it up especially with scenarios ( war stories) . Which he encouraged, because it was making us think harder. When we got to skills, I would say to remember 2 things. 1 do NOT over think, I've seen multiple students fail because of this, and when it comes to skills or the teacher wants a volunteer.... Always try to go first, to test where you are. Don't think about other students when doing this or how much better they may be compared to you. YOU want to pass this, worrying about what other students think won't get you to pass. Also yes, be aggressive during your clinicals. The doctors may allow you to do things or let you see things. I followed an RN into a room that had a patient with a severe virus, and she allowed me to do the patient assessment. They will let you do things if you show them you want to learn

Trying to memorize practice test answers is also a bad way to try and get by. You can do that all day but if you don't apply yourself to learn the material, you won't make it. I held an average 97% which put me in the top 1/3 of the class but there were still 8 people or so still doing better than me. When I was in the course, you got to choose who you wanted to go train with after the classroom portion of the course was over. Similarly when EMT students come into a trauma or medical emergency and say I could do this, and we (nurses) are doing whatever, maybe don’t say it out that loud that everyone can hear you, especially if you have refused to walk someone to the WC, been stood at the Nurse desk with your hands in your pocket and done one IV cannulation (which went horribly wrong) in the past 8 hours. (Happened a handful of times in my 17 years in Emergency.

    Apply yourself, if you don't understand something from a lecture or chapter, study it, find answers and ask questions. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. Don't take this lightly like its just another job, there will be moments in your career where the decision you make is the difference between life and death. There will be times where you want to quit, where you will have doubts and question why you're doing this. I can promise it is worth it, when you see those results that you passed your final exam, the NREMT and have that certification in hand It will be worth it. Also don't think that just because you have your certification that you know anything, practice your skills, study the concepts of why/how/when things happen in the body and why we do the interventions that we do, what they do to the body, how that intervention can make all the difference. Goodluck everyone currently in school and remember, do the right thing for your patient, especially when they aren't doing the right thing for themselves.

    My instructor told me that 2 hours is the maximum you should study every night. If you study over 2 hours any information after that point will start becoming blurry due to the way your brain learns. Take a hour walk or go work out or something then hit the books again if you have enough time. Don’t sacrifice sleep for study. If you are running out of time that night, skim over the chapters but don’t make a habit out of this. Also some people benefit from audio learning, most courses offer this. Writing down notes with pen and paper benefits you more than typing it. Ask questions, the only stupid question is the one not asked. Develop study habits early. Everything in your book is testable material.

      Dopamine is easy, don't even need a clock. Take their weight in pounds (120) and drop the third number (12) now subtract 2 (10) and that is your gtt/min for 5mcg/kg/min. if you want 10mcg/kg/min then just double it. Keep in mind that this only works for the standard concentration of 1600 mcg/ml of Dopamine

      Ryan, it is relative to the person you're asking. Many of my students said they used EMT flash cards, EMT apps, etc. I personally used the navigation test prep that came along with the main EMT book. At about 2 weeks prior to EMT graduation, I started taking the test prep exams over and over. After I had taken all of the questions the test prep had available I began to focus only on the questions I had gotten wrong. utilizing my notes and the book I grasped a better understanding of each of those questions and retook all of the test prep questions (I think it was a total of 600+ questions at the time; about 100 each section). I ended up getting 95%+ of them right with the other 5% being due to operator error lol (rushing lol). This method took me a lot of time to do but I passed the NREMT the first time. You truly get what you put in.

      Mark, I would look into the specific details of your course for that information. If you have trouble finding this out, send me the link to the course so i can take a look for you.
      But typically enrolling in an EMT course, you'll get a EMT book, program shirt, pocket CPR mask/kit; which should be included in the program tuition fees.
      The items you should purchase prior to EMT school are, navy blue dickies or pants alike, a black belt, and some black steel toe boots. Don't feel like you need to go get black red wings boots, they are super expensive and unnecessary. Walmart has some black steel toe boots that worked great for me through the EMT school, the fire academy, and my career as a firefighter.

    How does the US EMT/Paramedic training programs work? Reading in the comments, I see somebody in high school with "EMT cert." while others are 'EMT Basic" and "EMT-P". Are these different skill levels in the programs? How long does "EMT class" go for, and what skills/qualifications do graduates come out with? Best wishes from an Australian paramedic.

    • @weeziteer
      @weeziteer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coover in the United States, an EMT B means EMT BASIC which is an entry level first responder. They are below paramedics in terms of their scope of practice and their certification must be renewed every two years with either taking required continued education classes or some other method that is so time consuming that I forget what it is I erased it from my brain. EMT’s Can administer Naloxone, Glucose, Oxygen and assist with Nitro, Aspirin, Epinephrine, and albuterol inhalers. They’re also known as BLS, Basic Life Support because they can do the basic essentials of life support like splinting, oxygen therapy, bleeding control, long boarding and c-collaring a patient, using the KED, CPR, suctioning, and I might be missing more skills that aren’t coming to me at the moment.

    • @coover65
      @coover65 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@weeziteer And do these EMT-B staff always work under guidance of a paramedic in an ambulance, or do they crew ambulances without paramedics?

    • @weeziteer
      @weeziteer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Coover So depending where they work they can run dual EMT or one EMT and a paramedic on board. Where I work I fill that EMT role and I work alongside a paramedic. If the ambulance is dual EMT, the emt crew can always upgrade to an ambulance with a paramedic on board to aid on their call and say if they were to do that, an ambulance with a paramedic and an EMT would show up to aid. If the ambulance is an ALS ambulance (that is what an ambulance consisting of a paramedic is called, advanced life support) then the EMT is basically the assistant of the paramedic and helps set 12 leads, 4 leads, b/p, pulse aux, drives the ambulance, does most of the cleaning, operates gurney the most and aids the paramedic with other duties.

    • @coover65
      @coover65 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@weeziteer many thanks for that. very different set up to Australia. In my state we have basically 3 levels staffing ambulances. Base level is Advanced Care Paramedic (Bachelor of Paramedicine), Critical care (post graduate) and in the cities High Acuity (HARU). The latter do roadside surgical procedures, blood infusions, emergency Caesars etc. ACP make up about 80% of staff, and most CCPs and HARU back crews up in SUVs. In rural areas we have Paramedic Practitioners (also do community nursing) and Flight Paramedics.
