    We marvel at Stephen Fry's verbal skills. And indeed his skill with the English language is fantastic, but watching him tear up as he tells a touching story, you realise it is his genuine humanity, his big heart, that is invaluable.

      He's an inspiration really, he has balanced his mind and heart so both work together in harmony, not letting his intelligence run into arrogance whilst his heart stays true to it's purpose.

    "Those of us who can speak-up and are - at least, outwardly - brave enough to...confront a bully are, kind of, obliged to do so on behalf of those who aren't." - Stephen Fry - @stephenfry
    I love this line. It seems to imply that a person may not be inwardly brave but can take a stand for those in need - which would show a special type of bravery!

    • @Raz.C
      @Raz.C 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't have a problem with any of this, except that it seems to be the exact definition of/ conditions for bravery. Ie: Taking a stand on issue 'x' on behalf of 'y,' despite any personal fears/ misgivings.

      @@davidwebb2318 first of all, you can definitely have leaders of democratic governments that are anti-democratic. Secondly, a fundamental aspect, a necessary requirement, of democracy is an informed electorate, a people that is informed correctly and without emotion (which is a utopian idea, but nonetheless one worth striving for) on the pro's and con's of a given problem. This was not the case with the Brexit-vote, which was a quagmire of half-truths at best, a coordinated campaign of lies at worst.
      Which is not to say that Mr Fry would make a good PM, but only to say that your argument as to why he wouldn't be a good one, is nonsense.

      adrian Last They might be in the media, but that doesn't mean there are other openly gay people in a person's real life social circle; if you feel like the people who are actually in your life wouldn't or might not accept you, it can be incredibly damaging; it keeps people from living as themselves and sometimes in extreme cases it keeps them from living. You cannot think any amount of pride can do the damage that the amount of homophobia in the world does.

      When I was 15 I was invited with another boy to go to this bar with a friend of mine. I had know him for about 11 months. He took us to what turned out to be a gay bar. Which in 1973 was quite rare indeed in Vancouver. We had a couple glasses of beer and during that time my friend to us that he was a homosexual. He told me at a later time that he thought it would be the end of our friendship. I told him that I did not care. I told him that I did not want to be hit on and he said rather quizzically that I was not his type. We had a good laugh. To this day, I don't care. Neither myself as a hetro nor anyone who is gay is any different to me. LGBQ hermaphrodites whatever parades bother me. Before you judge me I would like to tell you why. These parades are not paid for by the community represented, they are paid for by the general taxpayer base. Money for street closures and policing are tangible numbers, in hundreds of thousands of dollars. In fact I am not in favour of just about any parade. We have so many issues with homelessness and other problems I would rather see the money go there.

      It helps that we've had full on American TV/movies/culture etc in the UK since movies/TV began, whereas America has only really been getting British TV and movies for the last 20 years of so. The likes of Fry, Patrick Stewart Tom Hardy etc (almost every British person in the past 100 years really) have been exposed to 'American-ness' for a lot longer than Americans have been exposed to 'Britishness' (and I mean real Britishness, things like the office, Inbetweeners etc not Mary Poppins Benny hill type shit that were produced for American audiences to give an Americanised view of Britishness)

    I have never thought of Star Trek in this way before - a brilliant analysis. What Stephen is talking about also relates to Freud's theories about the Id, Ego and Superego, almost an exact translation - I'm not sure if he realises this. Very interesting.

      susan cwilson I agree. It does seem like every species in Star Trek is a reflection of something in human nature. The Klingons are our warlike tendencies. The Ferengi represent greed. The Romulans represent lust for power. The Borg; the Ultimate of machination.

"It is worth doing the right thing".On Nietzsche and the birth of tragedy and the split within all of us between harmony and discord...And on T.S. Eliot and Star Trek...

    To that end (and six years later), I would implore the young GLBT crowd not to become the new bullies. We have an opportunity, even with the mounting world crises, to make something magnificent of ourselves as a species. Here’s to that possibility.

    I think Stephen is one of those people who is perfectly split between astoundingly poetic and theological and then seconds later being amazingly funny and fucking bonkers, this is especially evident while he was hosting QI where he can go from talking about the very serious consequences of war to laughing about hitlers funny moustache. I think the split is evident even in this speech. This is why Stephen Fry is one of my heroes

    • @connoroleary591

      They should just stay at home, rather than annoy everyone in the room

    • @jwvandegronden
      @jwvandegronden 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It seems coughing is more and louder when emotions are involved: emotional discomfort, either positively or negatively (being touched or irritated and unable to sit through it) seems a big contributing factor. And Stephen is so smart and well spoken he hardly ever looses track of a train of thought. But he often navigates parallel inroads and branches off quite strongly to return to the main track to finish and not all people are capable of following along, losing sight of the overarching story and become restless. And then start to cough. So it’s also a sign of a more limited attention span. Luckily there is no Darwinian natural selective punishment for that challenge or the room would be almost empty at the end :D
